You must have played in a much cooler group "back in the day", because back in the 80's, in my experience, the hobby was unfortunately 99% male, contrary to @14:56. Only in the recent resurgence in the 2010s have more women started playing, according to my much-more-limited experience. I haven't played for 30 years, of course.

We were quite lucky. We had about 3-4 girls that played who were confident, smart, but not necessarily nerdy. They often used reason as we were always trying to bash everything into submission. ;)
