Fate Stay Night is garbage Fate/Stay Night: Shirou's plot armor One cannot talk about "plot holes" without mentioning the plot armor that Fate/Stay Night gives Shirou. 1. Shirou vs. Gilgamesh fight: The story can go on and on about how "Shirou has absorbed Archer's skills" and "Gilgamesh lets his pride get in the way" all it wants. It would be believable if the story let Archer win against Gilgamesh, but not Shirou. And here's why: Even Archer would have a bit of trouble defeating Gilgamesh. Shirou - who would lose to Archer in a fair fight (reminder: in his fight with Archer, Archer let him win) - should in no way defeat Gilgamesh. Shirou has gained UBW but his agility and skills were lacking; he was someone who didn't even know how to sword-fight 2 weeks ago. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh is famous for many forms of combat, battled gods and demons in his life, can manually use all the weapons in his GoB, single-handedly supplied several Servants at once while protecting Uruk with a magical barrier. Yet FSN dares use the excuse that "Gilgamesh is a king, not a warrior" (Hello, he is both!) for why a high-schooler would defeat him in swordfight. Gilgamesh isn't an A-rank melee combatant. But GARcher himself isn't an A-rank warrior at melee combat, either. Gilgamesh < Lancer in melee combat. GARcher < Lancer in melee combat. Shirou < GARcher. While UBW is a decent counter to Gate of Babylon, Shirou can't realistically physically keep up with Gil due to Gil being a demigod and Shirou being a human. Gilgamesh had 2 perfect chances to kill Shirou and co. when they were face to face before the showdown: in the first instance: Shinji stepped in (as if Shinji had any importance to him); the second instance, Gilgamesh has opened a dozen Gates of Babylon about to launch but the story doesn't forget to have Rin threaten to shoot Shinji as if she were a threat. Gilgamesh himself said that even if she killed Shinji, it'd be no problem to him. Yet he went, 'Ahhh, I've opened a bunch of GoB but I'll withdraw for now 'cuz I don't want dust on my clothes' - haha... what a ridiculous reason! This is the person who had crawled in dust to battle many things in his life. Not to mention that retreating is totally not Gilgamesh's style. UBW itself is a huge mana cost, while GoB costs much less mana and has the most powerful weapons in the universe. The weapons projected by Shirou are B-rank so they shouldn't be able to shatter Gilgamesh's A-rank weapons. It's only wistful thinking that UBW can match GoB: GARcher, while having Rin as a Master, could only take half of Heracles' lives and died in the process. Gilgamesh, while having a crappy Master like Kirei, took all of Heracles' lives effortlessly. Even if Gil didn't want to use Ea, he has numerous magical weapons in his GoB. Yet he only used swords against Shirou. Shirou is able to trace things that aren't swords but it's much more costly for him. Gilgamesh could have easily overwhelmed him with things that Shirou can't replicate repeatedly or replicate at all. The number of times you see Gilgamesh shooting hundreds of weapons from his GoB and suddenly he couldn't hit Shirou. Even when Shirou gave Avalon back to Saber. Shirou still magically survived what should have been deadly wounds. Nasu: Dark Saber has lost what you call the protagonist’s compensation, or rather the glimmer of the stars. So a miracle wouldn’t happen against Gilgamesh, it would simply be a measure of their abilities... Takeuchi: If it’s not in life but as Servants, wouldn’t it change a lot depending on who the Master is? Nasu: Back when they were alive, both had extraordinary magical energy output so it would be a pure battle of firepower. With his omnipotence and cunning (INT), Gil is slightly advantageous here. I hope they will remake the VN and improve a bit the writing in the Fate Route (not saying it is bad, but with some tweaks it can get great). Maybe that will make them consider remaking the route in an anime by ufotable.
UBW was remade by Ufotable despite Deen having already adapted it and seeing how successful Fate is I wouldn't be surprised if they also remade the Saber route, not to mention that if they don't treat the Deen Fate as cannon then they won't be able to move on to Hollow Atraxia without the Saber route
I loved Sakura here because of the non generic strong female character trope in the film; The fact that she was going through all that in all routes but she just kept it in is huge. What broke her is Angra Mainyuu removing her inhibitions without its influence she would’ve just continued what she was doing the whole time and what saved her wasn’t Shirou, it was Rin. And it showed what trauma was, just because her life got a bit better doesn’t mean her trauma is gone.

@@okita_souji_alter Honestly, I felt the same way, but thinking back on it I believe that the VN fight was just too perfect to be adapted. What made Shirou vs Kirei spectacular was never their physical confrontation, it was the state of Shirou's mind during it, with parts of his brain literally disappearing as it was replaced with swords, and the VN does an incridible job of letting the player visualize that, by using broken text and effects. I don't know how the anime could ever give that same feeling.
Although one thing about is Sakura , deciding to live a better life and help others as compensation for all the people she ate and killed during the time she wasn't her normal self. It's hinted a bit in the movie but you'll notice it more in the VN. She was a real victim , who have a redemption and tried to own her own mistakes in the end
Yeah archer was cable of doing everything shirou did except 100× better and with little consequences. He had the capabilities and army to win the grial in every route but that was never his goal.
I kinda wish they animated the Sparks Liner High ending. It is an ending where Shirou 1v1 Saber Alter instead of letting Rider help him and he actually won. Also in VN, Heaven's feel had two endings. The movie being the true end and the other one is a normal end. The normal end Illya didn't appear to sacrifice her life, instead, Shirou projected saber alter's excaliburn and excaliblast avenger (aka Angra Mainyu) and kills it but he also dies coz the cave collapsed in result. I like how the irony that in all routes, he actually saved the world (specifically the normal end) in this one.
I can't fully remember all the info but the fact that the alter saber vs rider fight was mostly done by a single animator is absolute insanity. If I remember right the fight uses a total of 13 layers maybe more which is insane. There's an interview somewhere but I can no longer find it. Most fights of insane animation quality don't come close to that as only a madman would want to animate in 13 different layers?
I swear I'm not trying to be a smartass but several animators did a lot of sections for the fight. I guess the part you might be referring to is the Nozume Abe cut in the last 1 minute of the fight?
If Shirou failed, Avenger would’ve been born, Fate/Zero’s end would be repeated except it’s the whole world and some god like servant known as a Grand Servant would’ve stepped in to fuck up Avenger.
Not ain't enough to utilize a grand servant for the angry mango. At best, the world would just sent a counter guardian, grands are for the beast of humanity when they emerge

Yeah i find it funny and cool that archer can do what shirou did but 100 times better and with little consequences. If he wanted to archer could win the grail in each route but just says "fuck shirou!" And focuses on that instead of winning

I agree Heaven’s Feel Shirou always felt like the most satisfying conclusion to his arc with him learning NOT to throw himself in front of every single danger and actually value his life. I also love Sakura in this film. Girl gets put through alot and really deserved that happy ending. That one scene with her and Rin playing cards as kids always gets me too. Great work and looking forward to seeing more! (Emiya Gohan has some of the most adorable shit in the series just saying)
Eh, I found UBW more conclusive cause he won't end up being like Archer while having a similar path. He also had something with all characters unlike in Heaven's Feel where it's like only Sakura, Kirei and Illya and everyone else just exists.

The Sakura-Rin relation was also a hell of a plot for me who watched Zero years ago as my first fate so I really appreciated their sister-mood during this film and the previous one

The oddest thing, is that people think Sakura is a yandere, when its kind of obvious why she is out of sorts. That, and the multitude of times in the route she actually tries to reconcile with Rin. The strange thing though, is that they took out Sakura's better talks with Shirou about life, magecraft, and stuff, while Rin's colder aspects we're also cut out. So they made Sakura look crazier out of context (since lets be honest, a lot of the fandom doesn't pay attention to fine details, so you need to be pretty explicit), and Rin less cold. Its unfortunate, because then that hug at the end loses much of its impact. The end is supposed to show that both sisters have their issues to work through, not just "Sakura is cray-cray".
So what the third magic aka Heaven's Feel does is making the soul independent from the body, thus granting the one using it immortality. What happened at the end of the movie is Illya using it, to some extent, on Shirou to let his soul inhibit Rin's pendant after his body is destroyed. Or that's how I understood it, anyways.

Truly the greatest route I'm glad you had fun (and fell into despair) watching it! I'll never forget the story of Shirou and Sakura, how they overcame their own F A T E (amirite) in order to walk their own path and seek for happiness. After watching all three of the Heaven's Feel movies, I got to say it wasn't as good as I hoped. Like I think they could of had the Evil Version of Saber be like the final boss Shirou had to beat after he saved Sakura or something I thought it was dumb having Rider fight Saber, like a cop out, have Shirou beat Saber, he's supposed to be the hero of justice type and yet he is limited to a back up roll in the fight with Saber.... After watching Lost Butterfly and seeing how powerful Saber could be I was sure Shirou was going to fight her last.... not to give up what happened 😮💨. He doesn't fight her at the end as some Mega Final ULTIMATE Battle... stupid... The overall I liked the three Heaven's Feel movies, but to me the best "version" of the Fate/Stay Night franchise is the Unlimited Blade Works Series.... 🤷♂️
Thank you someone that thinks Illya being best girl and should be the main heroine of heavens feel. Which the story makes more since on her then not on Sakura as the main heroine. Because I don't buy much into Sakura story that doesn't make no sense on her like, I don't see her how does she get Angra Mayu which it doesn't add much to her story than Angra Mayu is supposed to make more sense into the Einzbern family plot story.

Not every visual novel doesn't need to be a eroge or a loli character to not have romance in theirs or h scenes but a clean story just for them something like the anime Angel Beats. Where the protagonist interacts with different characters and not just on female characters but male characters too. No romance but relationships being told differently. But one thing how come in ubw anime we see a flashback to Illya past how she made contact with Angra Mayu that a blob of looking mud showed up in her mansion home felling in Illya with lies that her father abandoned her and in the Fate route both visual novel and anime showed the curse mud of all evil coming right out behind Illya when she was kidnapped by Keiri in the finally scene of the story.
Funny thing is, assassin would have folded kirei had he not toyed with him and focused on trying to kill him with zabaniya when he could have just stab the guy.

Hf3 is probably my least favorite movie of the 3 just cause of how butchered it is from the vn, but I'm glad you enjoyed. It's just a shame a lot of the important emotional moments of the story didn't land due to how ufotables version of the story is presented, but it's great to see an anime only enjoy what's there. She is one of the best puppet makers in the world. She does such good and realistic puppets that the Mage's Association wanted her dead in the past. Touko has done puppets that can go 1v1 with some servants. The Shirou puppet feels almost as good as the old body. It's pretty impressive how well you researched all the small details. Heaven's Feel is not a trilogy for Fate noobs, in general you get everything only after reading the whole 3 routes of the Visual Novel.

The novel states the puppet body is actually better than Shirou's original body. The only down fall is that he needs a constant source of mana to not die, but since Sakura's connection to the grail and Avenger she basically has an unlimited amount of mana. Which is also why Ride is and to stay around.

Well yeah, they went for everyone lived happily ever after ending for the movies. There is another ending though, which fits much more for Heaven's Feel and characters do the real sacrifices, not like half a.s ones like in the movie.
Now what fate Apocrypha (No homunculus no Fight), grand order (Mashu Impact) , fate Extra last encore ( Saber evergarden) and Carnival phantasm and Grand phantasm (little type moon academia), ( let's forget about prisma Illya, oath under snow, strange fake for a while)

Ending was a bit dumb, but it's an anime. I got similar vibes with Sakura: when she wasn't trying to be sexy I just lost interest. Rin's response to her whining was peak. Sakura being a victim the whole time made the ending more frustrating: "okay, I guess she gets away with killing hundreds of people". I also feel bad Saber's character had no development in these movies.

The story can go on and on about how "Shirou has absorbed Archer's skills" and "Gilgamesh lets his pride get in the way" all it wants. It would be believable if the story let Archer win against Gilgamesh, but not Shirou. And here's why:
Even Archer would have a bit of trouble defeating Gilgamesh. Shirou - who would lose to Archer in a fair fight (reminder: in his fight with Archer, Archer let him win) - should in no way defeat Gilgamesh. Shirou has gained UBW but his agility and skills were lacking; he was someone who didn't even know how to sword-fight 2 weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Gilgamesh is famous for many forms of combat, battled gods and demons in his life, can manually use all the weapons in his GoB, single-handedly supplied several Servants at once while protecting Uruk with a magical barrier. Yet FSN dares use the excuse that "Gilgamesh is a king, not a warrior" (Hello, he is both!) for why a high-schooler would defeat him in swordfight.
Gilgamesh isn't an A-rank melee combatant. But GARcher himself isn't an A-rank warrior at melee combat, either.
Gilgamesh < Lancer in melee combat.
GARcher < Lancer in melee combat.
Shirou < GARcher.
While UBW is a decent counter to Gate of Babylon, Shirou can't realistically physically keep up with Gil due to Gil being a demigod and Shirou being a human.
Gilgamesh had 2 perfect chances to kill Shirou and co. when they were face to face before the showdown: in the first instance: Shinji stepped in (as if Shinji had any importance to him); the second instance, Gilgamesh has opened a dozen Gates of Babylon about to launch but the story doesn't forget to have Rin threaten to shoot Shinji as if she were a threat.
Gilgamesh himself said that even if she killed Shinji, it'd be no problem to him. Yet he went, 'Ahhh, I've opened a bunch of GoB but I'll withdraw for now 'cuz I don't want dust on my clothes' - haha... what a ridiculous reason! This is the person who had crawled in dust to battle many things in his life.
Not to mention that retreating is totally not Gilgamesh's style.
UBW itself is a huge mana cost, while GoB costs much less mana and has the most powerful weapons in the universe.
The weapons projected by Shirou are B-rank so they shouldn't be able to shatter Gilgamesh's A-rank weapons. It's only wistful thinking that UBW can match GoB: GARcher, while having Rin as a Master, could only take half of Heracles' lives and died in the process.
Gilgamesh, while having a crappy Master like Kirei, took all of Heracles' lives effortlessly.
Even if Gil didn't want to use Ea, he has numerous magical weapons in his GoB. Yet he only used swords against Shirou. Shirou is able to trace things that aren't swords but it's much more costly for him.
Gilgamesh could have easily overwhelmed him with things that Shirou can't replicate repeatedly or replicate at all.
The number of times you see Gilgamesh shooting hundreds of weapons from his GoB and suddenly he couldn't hit Shirou.
The story never shows Gilgamesh in his golden armor, even in his fight with Heracles, because it has to make him look as vulnerable as possible.
2. Shirou vs. Kirei fight:
Shirou is also shielded heavily by plot armor in his fight with Kirei. Did you see Kirei vs. Kiritsugu fight in Fate/Zero? That man fought like a demigod against Kiritsugu - who was an experienced assassin and well-versed in the defense art himself, who used Double and Triple Accel and still couldn't "get" Kirei. Shirou is a lesser mage and a lesser fighter than Kiritsugu, is simply no match for Kirei.
This is a pretty typical hero's journey BS where the protagonist wins by plot armor and a lot of dumb luck.
Berserker hit him once in the first fight of every route. And Shirou is unconscious for several hours afterwards. So no, Avalon is not an excuse.
And when Kiritsugu was using Avalon and when Irisviel was using Avalon. They still got severely wounded like any other person. They still felt pain like any other person. They needed rest and time to recover like any other person. They couldn't brush off severe wounds like Shirou apparently can.
So no, Avalon is not an excuse.
Even when Shirou gave Avalon back to Saber. Shirou still magically survived what should have been deadly wounds.
Even Kinoko Nasu admits Shirou has infinite plot armor
Q: If Saber Alter and Gilgamesh seriously fought each other, which of them would be stronger?
Nasu: Dark Saber has lost what you call the protagonist’s compensation, or rather the glimmer of the stars. So a miracle wouldn’t happen against Gilgamesh, it would simply be a measure of their abilities...

The Archer class Servant of the Fourth Holy Grail War. Though he was summoned by Tohsaka Tokiomi, he ended up deserting his master and re-contracting with Kotomine Kirei. He is the strongest character in both Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero.
In the boy-meets-girl story of the original Fate/stay night he was forced to yield to the universal law of "love conquers all", but in Fate/Zero he's free to show off his overwhelming, cheat-like strength without restraint. He could have ended the war in a single night if he truly desired to do so.
The author of Fate Stay Night outright admits Shirou is using plot armor to win. It can't get any more blatant and obvious than that.

UBW was remade by Ufotable despite Deen having already adapted it and seeing how successful Fate is I wouldn't be surprised if they also remade the Saber route, not to mention that if they don't treat the Deen Fate as cannon then they won't be able to move on to Hollow Atraxia without the Saber route

Sakura trauma dumping on Rin is just the embodiment of sending a novel of a text message only to receive a "K"
I loved Sakura here because of the non generic strong female character trope in the film; The fact that she was going through all that in all routes but she just kept it in is huge. What broke her is Angra Mainyuu removing her inhibitions without its influence she would’ve just continued what she was doing the whole time and what saved her wasn’t Shirou, it was Rin.
And it showed what trauma was, just because her life got a bit better doesn’t mean her trauma is gone.
Shirou getting his fight budget stolen by medusa is the biggest folding he's ever gotten honestly.

@@okita_souji_alter Honestly, I felt the same way, but thinking back on it I believe that the VN fight was just too perfect to be adapted. What made Shirou vs Kirei spectacular was never their physical confrontation, it was the state of Shirou's mind during it, with parts of his brain literally disappearing as it was replaced with swords, and the VN does an incridible job of letting the player visualize that, by using broken text and effects. I don't know how the anime could ever give that same feeling.

Yeah archer was cable of doing everything shirou did except 100× better and with little consequences. He had the capabilities and army to win the grial in every route but that was never his goal.
I kinda wish they animated the Sparks Liner High ending. It is an ending where Shirou 1v1 Saber Alter instead of letting Rider help him and he actually won.
Also in VN, Heaven's feel had two endings. The movie being the true end and the other one is a normal end. The normal end Illya didn't appear to sacrifice her life, instead, Shirou projected saber alter's excaliburn and excaliblast avenger (aka Angra Mainyu) and kills it but he also dies coz the cave collapsed in result.
I like how the irony that in all routes, he actually saved the world (specifically the normal end) in this one.

I can't fully remember all the info but the fact that the alter saber vs rider fight was mostly done by a single animator is absolute insanity. If I remember right the fight uses a total of 13 layers maybe more which is insane. There's an interview somewhere but I can no longer find it. Most fights of insane animation quality don't come close to that as only a madman would want to animate in 13 different layers?
They don't call ufotable unlimited budget works without a reason. They are masters at blending 3D with 2D animation and make it look so good.

I agree Heaven’s Feel Shirou always felt like the most satisfying conclusion to his arc with him learning NOT to throw himself in front of every single danger and actually value his life. I also love Sakura in this film. Girl gets put through alot and really deserved that happy ending. That one scene with her and Rin playing cards as kids always gets me too. Great work and looking forward to seeing more! (Emiya Gohan has some of the most adorable shit in the series just saying)

The oddest thing, is that people think Sakura is a yandere, when its kind of obvious why she is out of sorts. That, and the multitude of times in the route she actually tries to reconcile with Rin. The strange thing though, is that they took out Sakura's better talks with Shirou about life, magecraft, and stuff, while Rin's colder aspects we're also cut out. So they made Sakura look crazier out of context (since lets be honest, a lot of the fandom doesn't pay attention to fine details, so you need to be pretty explicit), and Rin less cold. Its unfortunate, because then that hug at the end loses much of its impact. The end is supposed to show that both sisters have their issues to work through, not just "Sakura is cray-cray".
So what the third magic aka Heaven's Feel does is making the soul independent from the body, thus granting the one using it immortality.
What happened at the end of the movie is Illya using it, to some extent, on Shirou to let his soul inhibit Rin's pendant after his body is destroyed. Or that's how I understood it, anyways.
No, Third Magic is the ability of turning inanimate object into a living thing. An ability to grant soul. Materialisation of the soul.

After watching all three of the Heaven's Feel movies, I got to say it wasn't as good as I hoped. Like I think they could of had the Evil Version of Saber be like the final boss Shirou had to beat after he saved Sakura or something I thought it was dumb having Rider fight Saber, like a cop out, have Shirou beat Saber, he's supposed to be the hero of justice type and yet he is limited to a back up roll in the fight with Saber.... After watching Lost Butterfly and seeing how powerful Saber could be I was sure Shirou was going to fight her last.... not to give up what happened 😮💨. He doesn't fight her at the end as some Mega Final ULTIMATE Battle... stupid... The overall I liked the three Heaven's Feel movies, but to me the best "version" of the Fate/Stay Night franchise is the Unlimited Blade Works Series.... 🤷♂️

Not every visual novel doesn't need to be a eroge or a loli character to not have romance in theirs or h scenes but a clean story just for them something like the anime Angel Beats. Where the protagonist interacts with different characters and not just on female characters but male characters too. No romance but relationships being told differently.
But one thing how come in ubw anime we see a flashback to Illya past how she made contact with Angra Mayu that a blob of looking mud showed up in her mansion home felling in Illya with lies that her father abandoned her and in the Fate route both visual novel and anime showed the curse mud of all evil coming right out behind Illya when she was kidnapped by Keiri in the finally scene of the story.

Hf3 is probably my least favorite movie of the 3 just cause of how butchered it is from the vn, but I'm glad you enjoyed. It's just a shame a lot of the important emotional moments of the story didn't land due to how ufotables version of the story is presented, but it's great to see an anime only enjoy what's there.

4:06 That off-screen character is a pretty important mage from the Garden of Sinners movie series, Touko Aozaki. She is one of the best puppet makers in the world. She does such good and realistic puppets that the Mage's Association wanted her dead in the past.
Touko has done puppets that can go 1v1 with some servants.
The Shirou puppet feels almost as good as the old body.
It's pretty impressive how well you researched all the small details. Heaven's Feel is not a trilogy for Fate noobs, in general you get everything only after reading the whole 3 routes of the Visual Novel.

The novel states the puppet body is actually better than Shirou's original body. The only down fall is that he needs a constant source of mana to not die, but since Sakura's connection to the grail and Avenger she basically has an unlimited amount of mana. Which is also why Ride is and to stay around.

Rin was able to keep Saber around just with her mana in Sunny Day ending.
It is stated that Rin and Sakura have about the same insane mana suply, being sisters.
I kinda cursed myself by finishing the VN before the last movie, god damn the novel was so freaking great, so great that i hated the last movie, it cutted out so much and had so much potential being ruined.
Well, tbf the other movies had those problems too in a great extent, but not bigger than the last one.

Yet FSN dares use the excuse that "Gilgamesh is a king, not a warrior" (Hello, he is both!) for why a high-schooler would defeat him in swordfight.
Gilgamesh isn't an A-rank melee combatant. But GARcher himself isn't an A-rank warrior at melee combat, either.

While UBW is a decent counter to Gate of Babylon, Shirou can't realistically physically keep up with Gil due to Gil being a demigod and Shirou being a human.
Gilgamesh had 2 perfect chances to kill Shirou and co. when they were face to face before the showdown: in the first instance: Shinji stepped in (as if Shinji had any importance to him); the second instance, Gilgamesh has opened a dozen Gates of Babylon about to launch but the story doesn't forget to have Rin threaten to shoot Shinji as if she were a threat.
Gilgamesh himself said that even if she killed Shinji, it'd be no problem to him. Yet he went, 'Ahhh, I've opened a bunch of GoB but I'll withdraw for now 'cuz I don't want dust on my clothes' - haha... what a ridiculous reason! This is the person who had crawled in dust to battle many things in his life.
Not to mention that retreating is totally not Gilgamesh's style.
UBW itself is a huge mana cost, while GoB costs much less mana and has the most powerful weapons in the universe.
The weapons projected by Shirou are B-rank so they shouldn't be able to shatter Gilgamesh's A-rank weapons. It's only wistful thinking that UBW can match GoB: GARcher, while having Rin as a Master, could only take half of Heracles' lives and died in the process.
Gilgamesh, while having a crappy Master like Kirei, took all of Heracles' lives effortlessly.
Even if Gil didn't want to use Ea, he has numerous magical weapons in his GoB. Yet he only used swords against Shirou. Shirou is able to trace things that aren't swords but it's much more costly for him.
Gilgamesh could have easily overwhelmed him with things that Shirou can't replicate repeatedly or replicate at all.
The number of times you see Gilgamesh shooting hundreds of weapons from his GoB and suddenly he couldn't hit Shirou.
The story never shows Gilgamesh in his golden armor, even in his fight with Heracles, because it has to make him look as vulnerable as possible.
2. Shirou vs. Kirei fight:
Shirou is also shielded heavily by plot armor in his fight with Kirei. Did you see Kirei vs. Kiritsugu fight in Fate/Zero? That man fought like a demigod against Kiritsugu - who was an experienced assassin and well-versed in the defense art himself, who used Double and Triple Accel and still couldn't "get" Kirei. Shirou is a lesser mage and a lesser fighter than Kiritsugu, is simply no match for Kirei.
This is a pretty typical hero's journey BS where the protagonist wins by plot armor and a lot of dumb luck.
Berserker hit him once in the first fight of every route. And Shirou is unconscious for several hours afterwards. So no, Avalon is not an excuse.
And when Kiritsugu was using Avalon and when Irisviel was using Avalon. They still got severely wounded like any other person. They still felt pain like any other person. They needed rest and time to recover like any other person. They couldn't brush off severe wounds like Shirou apparently can.
So no, Avalon is not an excuse.
Even when Shirou gave Avalon back to Saber. Shirou still magically survived what should have been deadly wounds.
Even Kinoko Nasu admits Shirou has infinite plot armor

The Archer class Servant of the Fourth Holy Grail War. Though he was summoned by Tohsaka Tokiomi, he ended up deserting his master and re-contracting with Kotomine Kirei. He is the strongest character in both Fate/stay night and Fate/Zero.
In the boy-meets-girl story of the original Fate/stay night he was forced to yield to the universal law of "love conquers all", but in Fate/Zero he's free to show off his overwhelming, cheat-like strength without restraint. He could have ended the war in a single night if he truly desired to do so.
The author of Fate Stay Night outright admits Shirou is using plot armor to win. It can't get any more blatant and obvious than that.

Ending was a bit dumb, but it's an anime. I got similar vibes with Sakura: when she wasn't trying to be sexy I just lost interest. Rin's response to her whining was peak. Sakura being a victim the whole time made the ending more frustrating: "okay, I guess she gets away with killing hundreds of people". I also feel bad Saber's character had no development in these movies.
