Kevin is a successful business owner in Minnesota. He had suffered with headaches for 10 years. Constant unrelenting headache for 5 years. He sought help from over 15 doctors including at Mayo Clinic. His symptoms were diagnosed as Cervicogenic headaches and as Occipital neuralgia.
They tried various medications that gave him brain fog but no headache relief. He then sought help from a pain management clinic. They tried series of Botox shots, trigger point injections and even nerve ablation burning off the nerve in the back of the neck. Tried physical therapy. Nothing helped. Even considered an implanted brain stimulator that was recommended, but decided against such brain surgery. It does tell one the level of impact his headaches had on his quality of life to even consider such an extreme surgical step.
Kevin experienced no “TMJ” problems. No jaw locks, No jaw pain. None of the doctors even suspected jaw problems. As a last resort, Kevin heard of a surgeon in California who does surgery in the back of the neck to relieve the pressure on the nerves that contribute to the headaches. He scheduled that surgery. But wanted to consult with Dr Raman before getting that surgery.
Kevin came to Kansas City for a consultation with very low expectations that a “TMJ” doctor could help his headaches when none of the other doctors so for had helped. If this did not help, he was going to try surgery on the back of the neck. But at least he will try this non-surgical treatment at Raman Center first.
Kevin also suffered from fatigue, poor sleep quality, neck pain and upper back pain. But his nemesis was unrelenting headaches at the back of the head that would spread to his forehead.
Kevin went through detailed diagnostic tests including our unique "Raman CCMD Protocol" of Physiologic Neuro Muscular Dental (PNMD) procedure to determine the optimal jaw and neck alignment. Even though he felt no “TMJ” symptoms such as jaw joint locks or jaw pain, his lower jaw was poorly aligned to his head and neck. Balance test revealed that his poor jaw alignment was affecting his entire postural chain. So that linked his jaw problem to whole body symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, poor sleep, fatigue and more. He was then fitted with a neuromuscular fixed orthotic for 90 days as a reversible phase 1 treatment. This is both a therapeutic and diagnostic step.
Within 2 weeks of Phase 1 Fixed orthotic, his symptoms were improving significantly. within 6 weeks, the headaches were almost completely resolved. His sleep improved. He woke up with more energy that lasted all day. He no longer needed 4 cups of coffee to get going in the morning.
Kevin extremely surprised to experience improvement of his headaches and other symptoms so quickly. He said that he “never thought in a million years that fixing my jaw would fix my headaches”. He learned that his jaw was poorly aligned and was the root cause so many symptoms that robbed his quality of life. Kevin is amazed how much that PNMD had improved his quality of life so quickly too!
Kevin chose Full Mouth Reconstruction as his long-term Phase 2 option. His upper jaw was improved by widening the arch form while keeping the lower fixed orthotic. He also received Orofacial Myofunctional therapy to train his tongue to better utilize the additional room created so that it can come away from the throat. This in turn improves the neck and overall posture.
To complete the treatment, all of his teeth were prepared in one visit for bonded ceramic restorations to precisely maintain the optimal jaw / neck alignment achieved by then. All of these restorations were delivered at one time as well. The bite relation was fine tuned so that these restorations would last Kevin a life time and keep the headaches from coming back. His fatigue, Upper back pain, shoulder blade pain all improved.
