Death wobble comes from the swivel hubs being out of adjustment, check the shims. The reason changing the wheels around help is because the way the tyres have worn, the wobble will come back if you don't sort out the swivels

Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly lost my password. I love any assistance you can offer me!

    Hello Guys, -and Ladies,
    best regards from Germany.
Also here in Germany we bought al lot of your British Trash, in what we put all our money and, really, all our heart!!! I Think, it's the last possibillity to drive smooth and comfortable everyday and everyway on all roads and in landscape.. but sometimes there ist also "the wobble of death" working....
In 80 % of those damages it's the balance of the tires or the rims.. mostly the rims!! (Is it not possible on the island to build rims completely round and balanced?). So it's often possible to get the wobble finished like you did it: Change the rear wheels to the front axle... But that's is a coincidence, when it works.
My idea is - I think - a better solution , to fill the tires (all 4) with balancer-pearls, in every tire about 140 grams, when the tires are about 235 x 16.
Those pearls of glas work very well inside my tires. From that moment, I filled them into the tires, the car runs well and calme....,the wobble was history.
The other 20 % mostly is the panhard.... I've used the pearls of "Couteract magnum +" ,not so expensiv, in Germany incl. shipping 25 Euros. You can also choose to a powder, like sand, but this can affect the air valves. The Pearls are neutral.
And after riding in muddy fields, then on the road, the balance - pearls also work well and exactly with the dirty tire !!!!
I hope, you or the guys in your community have the same successful experience as me.
    Best wishes, stay healthy
    Peter

Wear on tyres from power steering impacts on vibration. For that reason swapping wheels around can often have the opposite impact. Did you lose a wheel weight? Also as tyres wear they do go out of balance. A slightly buckled wheel or tyre can also cause wheel wobble.

You just listed pretty much everything I found looking into the wobble and slack steering, as a new defender owner, thank you very much.

Hi to Denmark! Also had a wobble issue with new BFGs on Dotz Dakar rims. Got it solved today by swapping front/rear wheels on the driver side.

Agree with the swivel preload for sure. As for tyres, swapping diagonally moves them from front to back and turns them round at the same time so they go from steering to non steering and also any run out is often evened out by them rotating the other way

A spare in the back is ok till it is buried under other stuff, or when you change a mudded tyre then put it back in onto your stuff which spreads the mud or you want to change quick when your in a dodgy spot , fast traffic, on a corner, in the dark, in the rain.
    Cheers

differential tyre wear caused by cornering, rear tyres don't suffer quite so bad so front rear swapping helps

Had the same drama with my 94 Defender 110 300tdi for a while, it turned out to be the worn bushes on the steering damper then I fixed it temporary by making up a bush from a rubbber hose while I ordered a new one. Also fitted new tyres as my old ones were F#cked, fitted Terraferma Steering damper + New tyres rotated & balanced, test drove it...... Problem solved! Cheers for the video.

Death wobble is to low pre-load on the swivels. Set them with the correct pre-load and it will be gone. Nothing to do with wheel balancing.

I just took the wheels off mine for balancing last weekend and it is still there. Wasted money... I never balanced wheels on my Series and it never gave me issues. My dad's s2 once had it (it had a snapped spring centre bolt)...

Im pleased you’ve found the problem! Have you lost one of the balance weights off the offending wheel? The imbalance will now be on the back axle, best get the balance checked so your tyre doesn’t tramp and cause wear and grip issues. There is static and dynamic balance on a wheel, you can get the info from the workshop manual or online, and as an aside the workshop manual says don’t swap the front wheels to the rear... just saying. Nice Landy.

Sounds like you have a buckled wheel that got taken off the front axle

I've not had the spare on the back of my Landy for almost two years!! one of those jobs to fit a good wheel carrier that I've not got around to doing!!

A wheel and tyre combo needs weights adding to make sure they spin true. If your front wheels aren't spinning true you will feel a wobble in the steering wheel at higher speeds. You can find dirt, weights have come off, a bend in the wheel or damage to the tyre can course the wheels to become untrue. It's common an all cars tbh

I'm having all these issues. My steering is so slack it's scary, I took it in, now it's just stiffer but there's still a weird disparity between what I'm doing on the steering and what the wheels are doing (make sense?). I also have a wobble, but at around 40mph and up. My wheel bracket IS KILLING ME. THE THUD. It's new, so I think the best thing to do is to buy a new set of wheels. I want my fun Defender back too

Wobble gone...all good... I think it has to do with tyre wear !! Apart from that ,the spare wheel belongs on the bonnet...and dont over modify, they came from the factory in a state to drive !!!! Go 4 it guys

the weights can fall off over time so if the rear wheels are balanced you might not feel it as much as not on the steering wheels

Uneven tyre wear for what ever reason can cause this. Tyre wear on this scale won't be visible necessarily.

A poorly balanced wheel is much less noticeable on the rear of the vehicle. You might have buckled the rim when off road.
