      like most mechanical things, after a certain time, check it adjust it, . diffs engines, g/boxes, change oil after 500 miles.when new,. preferably twice, then after hard use or period of yrs,, even brake fluid..

    It's nice to see someone dedicated to the 200tdi Defender 110. I also have one (and a couple of Discos) and I love it. Thumb's up for the clear info and the sincere videos. Cheers!

    disconnect the steering damper first to give the best feel of the steering box for binding when on stands

    MUST have the steering box central first before adjustment

    • @alecjames1426
      @alecjames1426 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you do t need it central that’s a mith

    • @johnallen3555

      the design of the box is such that there is minimum backlashwhen the box is in the centre position. adjustment (minimising) of the backlash done off centre can result in binding as the box passes thru centre
      - it is onoy by feeling this backlash / binding around centre that the box can be correctly adjusted. To sujjest otherwise would be from the mouth of a pelican

      boxes wear most in the centre.. it can bind at full turn,, so need to fully stop to stop..@@johnallen3555

    if a steering box gets loose, isn't it the sign of the gears worn out? adjusting it is not going to be dangerous? what made it go loose if not wearing out?
    thanks

    • @TheOrangeDefender
      @TheOrangeDefender  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well mine was a reconditioned box and came quite sloppy from the supplier. I'm saying, yes the gears will wear overtime (a long time) so will need adjusting to stop excessive play which will cause more wear! Adjusting is not dangerous providing your not leaving it sloppy or with tight spots, but as with everything when doing it yourself, it's your own judgement you're relying on as to weather its just a bit of slack that needs taking out or weather it's past its useful life.

    nice, thanks, whats the 4 bolt vs 6 bolt? is one pre 200, 300tdi etc and one post? finally that is quite an impressive gap in the door seal next to your head lol!

    • @TheOrangeDefender
      @TheOrangeDefender  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I’ve found and read 6 bolt steering boxes were used in the earlier defenders then they changed to 4 bolt but when there was a shortage of the 4 bolt they stuck the 6 bolt back in. So I believe it is a bit hit and miss as to what you will have. Either way both units can be swapped between defenders as they used the same fixing features etc with the 4 bolt being slightly better. I’m sure that gap is getting bigger and colder as time goes on, I’ve tried many times to realign the door but the doors are aftermarket!

    I've got the same issue - did you manage to eliminate all the play just through the adjustment screw, and did you have to turn it many times? I've tightened it maybe 1 full turn, the steering is much heavier but the play is still there either side of the centre (just stiffer) I'm worried about over adjusting it, but replaced most everything else that it could be!

    • @offroaduk8105
      @offroaduk8105 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Newhouse don’t over tighten it look for play in the pan hard bush or something like that whilst moving the wheel side to side

    • @JamesNewhouse
      @JamesNewhouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@offroaduk8105 Thanks for replying :) I thought I'd checked everything - already replaced the box, panhard rod, bushes and tie rods ends etc. but a mechanic friend came out and noticed that the drop arm had dropped down the tapered splines by about 3mm. Hammering it back up and a good heave on the nut fixed it instantly! But now the steering is very stiff where I've adjusted it on the box, so maybe I should back the box adjustment screw off a bit although he advised me against it.

    • @TheOrangeDefender
      @TheOrangeDefender  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the late response. Definitely don’t over tighten and make sure that it’s not in small adjustments. If there’s any stiff spots in it then slacken it off a bit. Stiff spots in the steering will cause premature wear on the steering box. Did you get it sorted in the end?

    • @JamesNewhouse
      @JamesNewhouse 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOrangeDefender No need to apologise! Sort of got it sorted...so the steering is nice and smooth (albeit stiffer than before all over from my adjusting the box) and the play is gone after the arm was re-positioned. All good during a 600 mile trip up north and back last weekend, and now when truck is stationary turning slightly left or right from centre and there's a metallic ping or "catching" sound (although it cannot be felt through the wheel). I can't narrow it down when under the truck, so still worried it's something to do with the box, but I guess I'll need to inspect everything this weekend, may replace the track rod ends anyway as they've had a hard few thousand miles on them now. I guess that's LR ownership for you!

      @@JamesNewhouse I had a recon steering box fitted in my 1999 TD5 and after doing some travel on rutted tracks found my nice tight steering went sloppy as heck. I discovered that the drop arm had loosened on the splined shaft. Despite serious efforts to tighten it, the damn thing repeatedly comes loose! A new drop arm, Loctite and an impact driver still weren't enough. Two locknuts has helped, but even so, it needs a tweak every now and then. Don't drive about with a loose drop arm if you can help it, as it will trash what's left of the splines on the output shaft.
