    The irony of calling Nick Carraway a breakout role when his entire character is based around the fact he's not involved in the events he's witnessing as much as he can be. Tobey Maguire did a great job of being an unassuming everyman, you forgot he was in a lot of the scenes. That's the whole point of Nick Carraway, Gatsby's one friend, a quiet, nondescript guy who nobody really knows much about.

    • @thebrutusmars

      Yea he’s supposed to be a narrator, a witness, but he’s also integral to the plot, which I think is respectable

      what's funny is Nick's cousin is the chic whose being cheated on by her husband and he invites him to chill with his side chic and some other chics and he accepts hanging out with the chic he's cheating on his cousin with. I guess why not get some side action if you're invited, right? Then he backstabs the guys generosity by helping his wife get out of the relationship.

    I think that the Hip Hop instead of Jazz thing was really dumb. There is this one scene at Gatsby's party where it is outside and the hip hop music is blaring, then it cuts to someone else inside and the music is muffled. It would make sense if it was real music playing, but since it is the 1920's and hip hop wasn't invented so there wouldn't be any sense of the original sound, then it falls flat on its face.
    Also another thing, they hardly feature the jazz and most of the time (in bizarre moments too) it is just hip hop music. It is really jarring and I don't like it.

    • @chilltilc6140
      @chilltilc6140 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah thought so too but they wanted to portray how jazz felt like to a person born from another time...

    • @clairep1371

      This how young people felt during this time though, which the hip hop music gives you, that feeling of freedom, not caring and partying

      this is exactly how I felt and honestly the only reason i seeked reviews because its my only complain about the movie. The soundtrack DESTROYED the setting to me and really took me out of the experience and made me cringe (especially looking back on it from 7 years ahead)
      It just feels to me that the defense that they were trying to portray how jazz felt to people in the 20s was an okay idea and then terribly executed so i felt the way I did. People aren't stubborn and stupid enough to not know what jazz music is to that era. We learned about it in basic history, and just because it's old music doesn't mean a modern person can't appreciate it in a movie that is ABOUT THAT TIME PERIOD!!

    I re-read the book the day before I saw this movie. The movie is DEFINITELY for the book people. I got a feeling at the end of the movie that I rarely get in films. I can't describe it, but I know I have seen something that is so faithful to the book and visually exactly as I pictured it. (the book is all about the contrasting images of wealth v poverty and the decay of the American Dream). There were so many lines directly from the book and Nick delivered them so perfectly. I loved loved loved this movie.

      I like that they used modern music which gives much more the impression of fakeness, superficiality and wildness than some upbeat jazz from the time would give. I guess the people who dislike the use of music just don't get WHY it was used, and just blame it on commerciality.

    • @dkemil
      @dkemil 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Diamond DG2 It's easy to make a point that 1920's music would be more fitting. But the result would make for a much tamer scene without any punch. The movie's theme is probably a lot more relevant now than it was when it was written, and the music tells everyone that so they strongly get that idea.

    I liked the movie but I thought they portrayed Gatsby as a hero too much. Like in this review, Jeremy says you're supposed to root for Gatsby.... Not really. Gatsby is supposed to be this obsessive corrupt man. You root for him in the beginning of the book but once things progress, you start to realize that he's not the big hero you thought he was

    • @brynnjasicki4995
      @brynnjasicki4995 8 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      +LavenousForever I disagree, I think in the book, Gatsby starts as this cool but shifty and enigmatic character that you don't know what to think of and start to to doubt as the novel progresses. But by the end, Nick begins to idolize and glamorize Gatsby as the only decent person in the East and pulls the audience along with that.

      Gatsby, ultimately, was no worse and probably at least slightly better than the people around him. Daisy's husband was a racist dick born into wealth and power and every bit acted the part, he was also a serial adulterer. I respect Gatsby because he basically came up from almost nothing and was able through his own efforts to stand toe to toe with people that would have snubbed him without all that money. He had a goal - get into Daisy's world - and he stuck with it and achieved it. I have to respect him for that. By the end of it though, Daisy was the one I hated the most. She basically chose money and security, life with a perpetually unfaithful husband who would likely never stop cheating on her, over real love. And because what, Gatsby's fortune was not earned entirely honorably, his methods weren't always on the straight and narrow? Like old money is any more honorably obtained than new money, that is such a crock. When it comes down to it, this story is about the death of a man's dream. Daisy, in the end, was not at all the woman Gatsby had built her up in his mind to be, in reality she was a coward who valued money more than love. In a way I suppose it is a warning against living in the past, because it may not be at all what you have idealized it as over the years.

    As a fan of the book, I must say I loved this movie through and through, the visuals are more to support the in your face ways of the roaring 20's but also, the acting is so so solid, the character symmetry is done very well, it has a good cast (I personally love Tobey as Nick) but this movie will always have ONE HUGE glaring flaw that makes me shake my head in shame, that sound track, it's like, "It was new york city 1922 (Jay Z starts rapping)" Like what?

    • @HighLevelPlayer
      @HighLevelPlayer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I'm sure it was because he was executive producer on the film. I bet he even got royalties for the use of the music and used his influence to put the music in when the film would have been better without it in the first place.
      I get why they put in his music, it's so that the music at the parties are more relatable to the audience at the time of release, but for people who just don't like this genre or for later generations, it really dates the film. I'm sure Jay-Z was smart enough to realize it himself when making the film, so why?

    “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

    I'm pretty sure plenty of people of have said this but I feel like Jeremy should have read the book before going into this movie. Nick Carraway was the ultimate observationalist (I don't think that is a word but fuck it). He is supposed to be in the background (like us), watching the events unfold (like us) and be unassuming (like us). Nick was pretty much the billboard of eyes in human form, he was always watching and recording what was going on. I love this movie and the book.

I think in direction and style, it matches and, at times, even exceeds the original while still conveying its central themes better than any other rendition I've seen to date. (Sorry. I think that was done on purpose. I had a lot of doubts about the soundtrack and though I'm not a avid hip hop fan it actually played into the movie quite well. It embodied the feeling of the 'roaring' twenties. But lets be thankful that Baz chose someone respectful like Jay Z and not someone like 2 Chainz (or whatever his name is).

      @TurtleSneezes 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don't agree I think it definitely pulled away from the 1920s.... I'm not saying they HAD to use only '20s music or anything but I think they could have put in a little more effort into making it more 1920s inspired. All he did was throw in modern party music that was automatically distinguished as a present day Jay Z song which kind of pulled everyone away from the movie and the time period to comment on one of his songs. Which was probably his purpose but I didn't think this was the right movie choice for it

    I thought the over-the-top visuals was a nice touch considering that the book portrays the wealthy in the roaring 20's, which is described as lush and luxurious and loud for those who could afford the lifestyle. The same goes for the music, I think putting modern hip-hop was a bold move and it really portrayed that over the top feeling that probably would have been lost to most people living today with jazz. I think the movie was a 7/10. Definitely entertaining.

    Jeremy man. For the first time, I'm in complete disagreement with you. THE MOVIE WAS AWESOME AND I WILL NEVER FREAKEN FORGET IT. First off, the *bedazzle* stuff was on purpose to portray what was in the book and I totally thought that it was awesome because I didn't even imagine that reading the book and I felt like that was appropriate. All the characters are precisely what they need to be. Everything was great. It's not completely perfect in the sense that they left some things out that I thought would've been major pluses at the end, but I have to say that at the very least, this movie is a Blue Ray rating, and for me, Awesometacular.

    wholeheartedly disagree, but I respect your opinion. I tend to despise Baz Luhrmann movies, but this one fit so well for his flavor of cinema. It was roaring, as the 20s were, lavish as the characters were, and as artful as the emotions were in the novel. Music, acting, dialogue, and visuals were all top notch imo, and warrants as many rewatches as any other Leo movie.

    Well stated.
    I kept hearing from people about how this was "so close" to the book. Nope.
    Yeah, the characters say things that come from the book, in a cliffnotes-ish kind of way, but this version really doesn't have anything in the way of the spirit of the book contained. It is all about its visuals, but the performances and visions are empty, and the film is really over the top to the umpteenth degree, and not in a good way.

    The thing about certain scenes "screaming and being loud" are usually during the party scenes or when Carraway is describing how wild and crazy the jazz age was. Which I thought was fitting, the cinemaphotography accurately captures what it's like to be drunk/"on acid" and the crash and burn in the aftermath.
    On another note, I loved this movie. It's one of my favorites.

    I know there are billions of homo sapiens in this world but seriously, am I the only one who didn't give a tuppenny fuck about the soundtrack? Sure, it's nice to have good music like in the Dark Knight trilogy but for the most part, I couldn't care less about it. Hell, No Country For Old Men had little to no background music and it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Sure, you might argue about it from an anachronistic point of view but I actually thought the music blended well with the scenes, especially in the one where everyone gets high. The music is supposed to be in congruence with the modern style the movie is going with. If you disliked the movie just because of the music, I'm sorry but you're probably a really shallow critic.

      The soundtrack of a film can make a big difference for a lot of people. It's really good in setting tones and building excitement in scenes where it is needed. While there are films out there that require no music whatsoever and can still be great movies, there are others out there that either use the wrong music or use it in excess, and kind of takes away from the experience.
      The music in Gatsby was okay at some points, but it does get kind of loud at a lot of other points.

    • @kidbuu1991

    I don't like how people say a role a famous actor plays could have been played by anyone. Any role can be played by anyone, as long as they're good at it. They just picked Tobey to play that role. That's it. Anyone who can act and fits the role could have played Leo's part. Doesn't matter.

  • @Fullmetal1890P
    @Fullmetal1890P 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I do not get why people don't like this movie, I fucking loved it, but then again, I love Baz Luhrmann and I think he does a really good job of modernizing older stories and make them relevant to watch now as a casual viewer. There's a TON of Great Gatsby films that are actually historically accurate, that's why he went all balls into the feeling of the time, because that's what they were missing. It's hard to get into the feeling of an old story nowadays when our lives today are so different, so that's the idea behind how he makes films. I mean, if you don't love Moulin Rouge, you just aren't going to get this film, or any of his films, and I do love Moulin Rouge, so that's my shit.

    The only thing I didn't like about this movie is the soundtrack. I understand it's supposed to be a more modern style, but that's just NOT the sounds you'd here at a "Gatsby Party." Other than that, it was a very solid adaptation from the novel.

  • @jonathanlemmon9597
    @jonathanlemmon9597 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    JEREMY!!! You need to read the book! I don't mean to sound like a movie/book snob but it's impossible to fully appreciate this movie if you didn't read the book first. Yes, people complain about the frenetic feeling the movie gives off, but that is actually what Fitzgerald's intent was back in 1922. He wanted to tell a modern story that was ahead of its time, and Baz Luhrman captured that beautifully! I don't care that the soundtrack felt distracting at times because it's barely noticeable for about eighty percent of the movie. The music sounded like jazz for the most part and it fit well with the story so that was fine with me. I understand your indifference toward this movie but my suggestion is that you read the book and watch it again with a different mindset. The book is only 180 pages and despite what you may have heard it is a very easy read.
    Thank you again for voicing your opinion, we need honest movie critics like you. But being a fan of the book and an admirer of the time period, I have to disagree with you here. I think Baz did an excellent job capturing the flashiness of this time period as well as the visual points that FSF was trying to make over a hundred years ago in a way that no other adaptation of this story has done before.
    I give The Great Gatsby an Awesometacular

      You shouldn't have to read the book to enjoy the movie, the movie should explain everything to you. It's like saying I didn't like The Hunger Games because I didn't read the books. Why should I waste my time reading something because the director and screen writer(s) couldn't tell the story in a movie. But yeah I read the book and it was amazing.

    • @maninazeri7196
      @maninazeri7196 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** As a movie fan, you do what is BEST FOR THE MOVIE and nothing else. The movie is what you are making to be good so you make a profit. Scenes can be altered, plot point removed, it doesn't matter. I agree reading is great but you shouldn't have to read something for the sake of liking a movie. A movie is suppose to stand on it's own merits without ANY other factors.

    • @maninazeri7196
      @maninazeri7196 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I completely understand your point(s). However, you seriously cannot be that arrogant and state that book to film adaptations are the worst. Harry potter, Hunger Games and much more have been great while keeping good to the source material. Of course the writers cannot cram everything into movies without pissing people off. E.G.If 5000 people read Harry Potter, does that mean the studio would have to spend MILLIONS of dollars JUST to please a SMALL minority? Of course not.

  • @Madisita
    @Madisita 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the soundtrack in this movie was PERFECT. It helped you understand what were the parties like in the 1920's. It was magical. If they played some 1920 music, we would be like: "Parties back then were lame" but the truth is they weren't. The music helped to tell the story, plus they used some music that sound modern but has a little bit of 1920's vibe going on, like Bang Bang- Will i am. A little party never killed nobody. I thought it was brilliant. Toby

    I read "The Great Gatsby" in high school and enjoyed it. I was really excited to see it was going to be made into a movie, given the plot and the era it's set in--the 1920s, which I love. But I when I saw who was directing, I got worried. For me, this film was hit and miss. The actors were good and I didn't mind the crazy visuals, but the soundtrack threw me off the most. It's like, "1920s visuals and--rap song!" Wait, what? They totally clashed and took me out of what was happening onscreen.

    I am a massive Gatsby fan and I loved the movie. The choices Baz made made sense to me, and the visual "loudness" was purposeful, in the book the visuals are always screaming at you: the yellow of Gatsby's car, the shining houses, the movement of the city. Everything was supposed to be MORE in the 20s and Fitzgerald captured that and I think Baz did too. However, I completely agree about Tobey Maguire. He was eh.

    You have to understand that this movie is an adaptation of a novel published in 1925. What made this movie so great was how amazing the adaptation and acting is
    everything in literature has a reason for its existence. EVERYTHING. The people, places, emotions, events, madness. Everything, no matter how unrealistic or over the top, has a reason.
    You may think the movie is trying too hard, but its supposed to look like that.There's a reason why its like that. This movie is a coup de grace to some
