I think I'm so fascinated by MRE reviews because they're like Lunchables for adults. Loved Lunchables as a kid. There's also the curiosity about what soldiers eat.
Dude I don't know how to say it . You ,Gshultz , Kiwi Dude ,And Steve you at leaders of the Ration review . We got a lot of thanks to yours . "Cheers" :D
"If you're stuck out in the sticks, it's not too bad...". How very true. If you are complaining about the look and taste of a modern MRE, then you need to put it down. Go spend a few more hours digging a trench... or filling sand bags...or running around in the trees with a water pack on your back and a Pulaski in your hands. Now try the contents of the MRE again. I'll bet they taste better! I did the Canadian Aircrew Land Survival Course back in the early 1980's. After a couple days of gnawing on the contents of the ejection seat survival pack, the leaves and bugs were starting to look mighty tasty. If someone had dropped an MRE beside me, I'd have been thrilled.
Thank you for the review ! You just made me think about the flavors. This meal look very simple, nothing "extravaganza" in shape or ingredients but... the mix of flavors makes it an interesting experience, especially when you are in the field, but not only. BTW - I learned how this kind of pasta is called - elbow :). In Poland we call it knees (exactly "little knees") :)
Nice. I have a whole case of TOTM's from 2001. I bought them off a coworker who brought them back from his weekend training with the Texas National Guard. To this day I've never tried one.
We hated being given these in basic, it's like a fraction of the food you get from a regular MRE. Sleep deprived and on a caloric deficit as a result of eating these for 2 of your 3 meals was not a fun time. We started to actually snatch an extra one for every 2 dudes from CQ so we wouldn't be hungry the whole day. It was hilarious watching dudes, myself included, using the packaging to make coffee in though.
my neighbor will occasionally pass me these when I'm running low on food (sometimes they're missing the m&ms and pretzels.) if you get your paws on the meatball and marinara with pretzels crush the pretzels and put it in the leftover sauce. delicious and adds the salt
The TOTM is available in every Commissary, if you ever need one feel free to let me know! Every one I've had yet (~6 menus) has had applesauce and MMs. Since that's the case, I usually swap one of my brown bags a day for a TOTM for field exercises. I never heat anything in a field rat, so I agree with your it's all for fun!
They would give us the TOTM's for training domestically. They generally suck compared to the regular MRE's. Its in a clear package because they aren't designed to be sent overseas or for long term storage.
Not gonna say a thing about the slippery, contaminated food pouch. Nope, not gonna. But I will observe that with the cardboard sleeve, you can now assemble everything with the bottom of the FRH visible - and add the water last. And, my continuing TOTM gripe (pronounced totem, btw.) Unless you carry your handy kettle to the classroom or rifle range, you can't make that darn coffee because there's no bev bag.
Peter You are my kinda guy! That's the best question so far!!! I think an ice cold Bass or Harp as they are pretty light yest still have a full bodied taste. Cheers!
I had to fly back out to Seattle for a family emergency so I didn't make it either. Sounds like it was a major success and there are plans for several more. Cheers!
I never had one. Ever. In training or otherwise. I recently pulled up the Defense Logistics Agency pricing list and the cheapest most cost effective thing is a case of 12 MRE's. Which is probably why it was the only thing I ever got to eat in the sticks. Cheers
I have a buddy in the reserves who brings me a case of TOTM's every other month. They're pretty nice, except every one I had came with peanut m&m's, and that gets old pretty quick.
They ALL get old pretty quick which is why your buddy gives you the case instead of keeping them for himself LOL! Took me 20 years to want to try one again after I got out!
Yeah that's for sure. By then end of the case I had enough. I actually had to pawn a couple off on my stepdaughters when we went camping because I was that sick of 'em.
That is really hard to say. It all depends on storage conditions. Old Smokey has a 20-30 ration that was kept in the freezer and once defrosted was perfect when eaten immediately as the tended to deteriorate rapidly when thawed. Others stored in a deep root cellar with a constant 50ish degrees last for a decade or more. Just stored in the open probably 3-5 years. It all depends on the heat where they are kept. Cheers
Great video gundog, last ration i had was from poland, sadly nobody sends me stuff anymore lol. eh such is the way things are with shipping costing a kidney t hese days. Been kinda, dull over on kiwi dudes channel hes kinda not around right now
He is sooo busy with all those young kids and work, not to mention it's summer time in NZ. But I have it on good authority (from him) he will return soon! Cheers
yeah, lol Tell me about it, I own my own online business now and I hardly have time to watch these videos anymore cause im dealing with something going horribly wrong every other day. Im going to pickup a few rations when i can ahead of time for camping this summer. Already bought a case of xmres. :)
They all had different dates if you look closely but they all were produced in 2016., well maybe not the M&Ms, were packaged and shipped by Wornick and "Luckily" eaten by ME! Cheers BSB!
gundog4314 I get that, if you "seal" the package on the "20" day, how could there be something inside that was produced on the "90" day? It's like magic! LOL!
I am turning into quite a fan of it myself. Boy, do I have some stuff for you mate! Will send it off once I get back from Doswell in case I find something else. Cheers Andrew!
getting fed up with the company in Kendal not coming forwards with the goods, buying myself, get it in the post soon, before I go in for my neck op,You should get it before xmas
I think what you meant to say is they TRY to sell boxes of these things hahah! At the local base where my cabin is they sell MRE cases as well but no one ever buys them. I have been tempted once or twice until I see the dates on them. Cheers!
Honestly less calories. These TOTM's average about 900 a ration and a MRE is about 1,200 calories. A few guys in the Guard said they got these but I never saw one until I started watching these kinda reviews. Cheers Leslie!
Just had one of these, pretty fine but holy hell is the sauce just way too bitter and acidic. If I have to eat one I'll try to get as little sauce as I can in a spoonfull.
I keep him in a a dried well in my creepy basement....and Yes, he puts the lotion on the skin and NO I don't dance around with a gender bender LOL! Seriously, he's just busy being a Dad, Husband and with work. Him and The Boss shall return. Cheers David
I've always been a traditionalist with applesauce. Cinnamon, mango, some other berry...pass. However, it with make a great vehicle to get the vitamins and energy from the drink mix if you had no water. Cheers!
These were/are designed and intended to feed Reserve and Guard folks on weekend training when they don't want to waste money on real food and to feed active duty troops who are out on details and the military wants to be cheapskates and not pay for missed meals.
Very cool friend !! Awesome job sir. Mispronounce, have fun, it your time you are taking away from life sir. WE will watch, appreciate as always, regardless if full review, hiking mixes , etc. or just drink mixes, etc. You saw my earlier reviews , when I still had A cam, Some do not understand, how hard it is to get A cam positioned properly, from front, behind , or overhead. These reviews are not easy, wish more people knew how hard it is to do this ! Off soapbox now, back to review ! Remember differences on the , extra ingredients in Peanut Butter. Wow. Like the Viagra reference, LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was waiting for the canned pasta, Reference to come, as it does from all reviewers. Sad but true!! Agree with you on artificial coloring, in drinks, as discussed before sir. No beard here, unfortunately, had to grow A FU Manchu, For other reasons. Can't make the meet, wish all the best of luck, peace, John, M .
Hey Gundog, im new to the youtube mre community. My house is military, wife included. I have a ton of these if you would be interested in trading for other mre's/rations.
Okay, there is no "Easy Button" for translations as it were. If anyone wants to take the time, in any language YT supports send me the file and I'll upload to the particular review. Cheers
yo siempre veo videos con subtitulos, pero no afecta mucho, me gustan estos videos sin importar el idioma I always watch videos with subtitles, but does not affect much, I like these videos no matter what language
I think I'm so fascinated by MRE reviews because they're like Lunchables for adults. Loved Lunchables as a kid. There's also the curiosity about what soldiers eat.
Well that is one way the military can cut costs. Just issue lunchables as rations. Oh wait crap, don't want to give them ideas.
knocknockify
It's just interesting seeing how much thought militaries put into shelf-stable food.
Dude I don't know how to say it . You ,Gshultz , Kiwi Dude ,And Steve you at leaders of the Ration review .
We got a lot of thanks to yours .
"Cheers" :D
Thanks Mate! I love the other guys and gals stuff too.Cheers!

"the smaller the hole, the more control that you've got" well, definitely depends on the subject 😊
You run a great channel. Keep up the unique review style and only change where needed.
Thanks Mathew!
Thank you for the review ! You just made me think about the flavors. This meal look very simple, nothing "extravaganza" in shape or ingredients but... the mix of flavors makes it an interesting experience, especially when you are in the field, but not only.

The MRE review community is the best in the world.
Great bunch of guys and gals. Truly makes this such a fun hobby. Cheers
Always love watching your videos man, keep up the good work!

Pretty fresh. Great review as usual

Thanks gundog.
Great video! Very entertaining to watch! Also just subscribed.
Sweet review man!!! Great job and love your channel!!!
The TOTM I got is in a shop where I love will see if he has more for you!!!
Great review as always!
Love the mug! Always keeping it fun :)
It is fun your very good doing these reviews!
Gun dog, you are a definition of awesomeness
Gundog, Great review as always! Really enjoyed watching it!-B
Thanks! Rock On!
Ooo wow thats one of the new 2016 veggie entrees!
The cold weather RCW is where it's at. The turkey tetrazzini is where is fab.
I wonder what happens if you are allergic to peanuts.
that macaroni looks like something I make for my kids sometimes. they love it.
I dont think anyone in basic had a peanut allergy, wouldn't be surprise if it was an automatic disqualifier from service.
I smiled ear to ear when you said: " it's decadent".
Crackling cellophane food packaging = dog magnet.
Rustling of any plastic or paper=dog magnet.
I would make an exception for the packaging of any items used at the vet.
Tunnelfish2 That is when they hide, growl or attempt to bite you.
Not gonna say a thing about the slippery, contaminated food pouch. Nope, not gonna. Always good points as always Rocky!
You can try putting the coffee, creamer, and sugar in your mouth and get it down with saliva haha
Mike Panetta or have to learn to deal with what you got, aka cold coffee
lol the zapple sauce just don't seem right if it isn't a nice browny orange colour as we normally see great review matey
good one nice job and review as always budd
Looks GOOD thank you for the video.
lol @ the MRE wup @$$ mug lol
Love the videos man!
Keep up the good videos sir
Loving american army meals
Just asking... What kind of beer would you drink with that... if you could?
Peter You are my kinda guy! That's the best question so far!!! I think an ice cold Bass or Harp as they are pretty light yest still have a full bodied taste. Cheers!
Lol, don't do it Gundog but you did ha ha, I enjoy your rations reviews very much thanks dude
cool video
eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon all have these
Hey how was Doswell? I tried to get there but couldn't. I really wanted to meet you guys. Any other ration forums planned in the mid Atlantic area?
I had to fly back out to Seattle for a family emergency so I didn't make it either. Sounds like it was a major success and there are plans for several more. Cheers!
How can I try some MREs.... And where can I get some for my shtf bag
Had to look up what a training meal was. Quite an interesting concept but I would think one could almost always get some prefrable hot food.
I never had one. Ever. In training or otherwise. I recently pulled up the Defense Logistics Agency pricing list and the cheapest most cost effective thing is a case of 12 MRE's. Which is probably why it was the only thing I ever got to eat in the sticks. Cheers
Hey gundog I love the vids and keep up on the good work ! Isn't that main just like goulash ?
It depends where you are from I suppose, but to me it was exactly like Beefaroni minus the beef. Cheers
lol where im from that looks like goulash that stuff is good
Do you always finish eating the rations after the review?
Most stuff gets tossed in a bowl or such and eaten over the rest of the week. Except liver, that stuff gets the heave ho quick. Cheers
My wife bought one of those in a the PX (BX?) when she was visiting her sister. She said they had a bunch for sale.
Wish I still had access to those...ah the good ol' days. Cheers Chris
gundog4314 You just need to get a relative to enlist and go as their guest. ;)
I went into the PX once with a retiree. I was more impressed with the Class VI. Only liquor store in the county that opened at 6am.
from a CHEF's standpoint i agree...it is PASTA ...its a tomato based sauce with pasta noodles....therefore PASTA hehehe
Yes I agree. It is pasta!
The smaller the hole, the greater the control. I'll remember that one.
if the sauce is really acidic you can add the extra sugar pack it will mellow the acidity but not make it sweet.
what do you think the max shelf life on the macaroni would be?
That is really hard to say. It all depends on storage conditions. Old Smokey has a 20-30 ration that was kept in the freezer and once defrosted was perfect when eaten immediately as the tended to deteriorate rapidly when thawed. Others stored in a deep root cellar with a constant 50ish degrees last for a decade or more. Just stored in the open probably 3-5 years. It all depends on the heat where they are kept.
Cheers
no ones curious ab nutritional facts. we watch these cause we're curious to see the types of food in the rations.
Great video gundog, last ration i had was from poland, sadly nobody sends me stuff anymore lol.
eh such is the way things are with shipping costing a kidney t hese days.
Been kinda, dull over on kiwi dudes channel hes kinda not around right now

Im going to pickup a few rations when i can ahead of time for camping this summer. Already bought a case of xmres.
:)
Wait, how do have an entree that made on a 90 day inside a pack that's supposedly dated on day 20? Did I read that right?
They all had different dates if you look closely but they all were produced in 2016., well maybe not the M&Ms, were packaged and shipped by Wornick and "Luckily" eaten by ME! Cheers BSB!
gundog4314 I get that, if you "seal" the package on the "20" day, how could there be something inside that was produced on the "90" day? It's like magic! LOL!
I didn't even see that...now you're gonna have me dumpster diving so I can look at it in person!
gundog4314 don't forget your snorkel! Great vids, I'm a subscriber for life. Keep up the fun videos!
nice looking ration there! but I think you lost your G rating with that comment about "the smaller the hole...." lol!
I know right! haha
what no Tea........!,Tea is part of my DNA
I am turning into quite a fan of it myself. Boy, do I have some stuff for you mate! Will send it off once I get back from Doswell in case I find something else. Cheers Andrew!
thanks ,still trying for the drink for .ASAP
getting fed up with the company in Kendal not coming forwards with the goods, buying myself, get it in the post soon, before I go in for my neck op,You should get it before xmas
What is whith the part2 of the spanisch ration ?
It turned out not to be an authentic ration so the rest of that review is on the back burner. Cheers!
training meal????
They sell boxes of these at the BX
I think what you meant to say is they TRY to sell boxes of these things hahah! At the local base where my cabin is they sell MRE cases as well but no one ever buys them. I have been tempted once or twice until I see the dates on them. Cheers!
Video not over if this gets answered ignore me. What is the difference in this and" regular" MRE?
Honestly less calories. These TOTM's average about 900 a ration and a MRE is about 1,200 calories. A few guys in the Guard said they got these but I never saw one until I started watching these kinda reviews. Cheers Leslie!
Lesle Boling this one has less calories and and doesn't have a side. It's made for a short training mission or a reservist type of thing I believe.
I think these are really for classroom or inactive duty use,not regular use.
Just had one of these, pretty fine but holy hell is the sauce just way too bitter and acidic. If I have to eat one I'll try to get as little sauce as I can in a spoonfull.
does anybody know what happen to kiwi dude?
I keep him in a a dried well in my creepy basement....and Yes, he puts the lotion on the skin and NO I don't dance around with a gender bender LOL! Seriously, he's just busy being a Dad, Husband and with work. Him and The Boss shall return. Cheers David
This would be a good meal to take camping if you have a little kid.
Email sent, brother. I got 6 you haven't done, as well as a TOTM.
anybody thought of flavoring the zapplesauce with a drink mix??
I've always been a traditionalist with applesauce. Cinnamon, mango, some other berry...pass. However, it with make a great vehicle to get the vitamins and energy from the drink mix if you had no water. Cheers!
These were/are designed and intended to feed Reserve and Guard folks on weekend training when they don't want to waste money on real food and to feed active duty troops who are out on details and the military wants to be cheapskates and not pay for missed meals.
Hate asking this but where is kiwi dude he vanished :/
Frostblitz20 He hasn't put up a video in 2 months. Hope all is well.
He's doing well just busy with work, family and enjoying the beginnings of warm weather since it's Spring down there. Cheers
gundog4314 Thanks for letting us know Gundog, was hoping nothing happened to the family or anything.
Cheaper than dirt has them I think

totems look cheap give me a real mre
guys, never try the reduced sodium rations. I bought a box at the swap-meet on impulse. I really wanna try a actual military mre.
