    Great review! As an Australian I would feel just at home eating this. As mentioned you did the noodles differently, but that is no fault of yours since you never had them before. Usually you just drain the noodles, then add all the packets into and stir it!
    But glad you did a Australian MRE, and also all the other MREs from all over the world!

    Great review again GunDog, as always!
    This exact CR1M is on its way to me as we speak, so I can't wait for it to arrive! Hopefully Canada Customs doesn't decide to just let it sit around for a few weeks. Be nice to have it in time for Christmas!

    We also have the Five Flavours variety in Life Savers here in Australia, although they are less common than the single flavour packs. Nice to see you get a fresh (super-fresh by ADF standards) CR1M to review.

    My father was an army Sargent so I grew up being familiar with all that entails. I thought everyone knew how to use a p51 or p38. I'd LOVE to have a FRED. Once you get used to using any of those, regular openers are substandard. I can open a can quicker with the military openers as fast as an electric one. Great video Gundog..ty for sharing this fantastic MRE with us. I'd really love to try one

    My ration came with rice and mashed potatoes, lucky me. But even it says on the paper I get noodles I didn't. Also condense sweetened milk went bad, turned to thick mass I could not even squeeze it out and it broke out on the other end - looking good but I was little afraid to use it, my coffee where very sad I must say. This CR1M's are strange and awesome in the same time. Nice review, I'm shocked you managed to put it in just 35min's.

  • @brianartillery
    @brianartillery 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Marmite works in Burton Upon Trent used to have a direct pipeline from a brewery pumping in the yeast sludge, across a busy road. I like both Marmite and Vegemite (as well as both Coke and Pepsi), and could eat the stuff until the cows come home. If you eat too much at once, it has the odd effect in some people of starting a nosebleed. Yeast extract pairs very well with cheese, and is fantastic in gravy. Some people never get the taste, which is a shame, as it's very good for you, full of complex B vitamins. It's so entrenched in British life, that things like TV shows are sometimes described as 'Marmite' - you either love them or hate them. I can't imagine life without it, myself.

    • @ChristmasCrustacean1
      @ChristmasCrustacean1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      thats true but its a special kind of soy sauce that is really sweet and thick.
      I might have to send you a 5 pack of indomie migoreng noodles to try, they're a favourite here in Australia and a product of Indonesia.
      you drain the noodles, mix all three sauces and the onion and powder together all into the drained noodles.

    Vegemite has an interesting history. Long before it became a commercial product, beer brewers would scrape off the fermented yeast extract from the top of the kettles and smear it on bread with butter as a lunch supplement. When the practice became so wide spread, it came to the attention of a Chemist in the Walker (later Kraft) company who started to produce it commercially in 1926.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is interesting indeed

    • @smokijo3163
      @smokijo3163 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since it was in competition with Marmite they tried to market it under the name Pawill in the early days. The slogan was Ma might, but Pa will!

    • @karlp8484
      @karlp8484 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SmokiJo. Interesting that Marmite is a German invention, while what became Vegemite is a British product. Marmite first, 1902. To be honest I can't tell the difference between the two, and I doubt that many other Aussies could either. Unless they looked at the bottle.

    • @smokijo3163
      @smokijo3163 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your right that there is not a lot of difference between them and it
      would be hard to identify each just by taste. BUT the only time I ever
      tasted Marmite I had to raid my Grans pantry to find out what the h*ll
      she had given me. Because it sure as sh** wasn't Vegemite. It just
      tasted ___WRONG___ . I have heard that Dick Smiths Aussiemite is an even
      bigger departure in taste but have not tried it myself.
      I just rechecked my information and from what I have found Marmite is a British product, Vegemite is Australian. Cenovis is Swiss and the Germans have an offering called Vitamin-R. The original is credited to a German scientist though. Also the British and New Zealand versions of Marmite are produced by different companies from different recepies.

    • @karlp8484
      @karlp8484 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SmokiJo. Yeah New Zealand Marmite produced by Sanitarium. Vegemite by Kraft.

    Alright Gundog, let me (an Aussie) teach you a little something about instant noodles, which are ingrained in our culture.
    In the US, the only type of instant noodles that you're used to is ramen, but here we don't even eat instant ramen. Just regular ramen.
    What we do have here, is a bunch of other things, namely 2 minute noodles, which as far as I know is an Australian invention. 2 minute noodles are generic instant noodles that come in generic flavours like beef and chicken. For those, it's a matter of preference weather you drain it before you put the flavouring in, but it work either way. Ramen is supposed to be a soup so obviously you're supposed to keep the water in. In previously shown MRE rations was the regular 2 minute noodles.
    One of the other things we eat here in Australia as instant noodles, which is found here in this ration (which I thought was very interesting) is Mi Goreng, which is Indonesian noodles. You're defiantly supposed to drain it before you put the sachets in, and it defiantly does NOT go with tuna. An egg or some tofu would work much better. The sachets depend on the flavour of mi goreng, but generally the 3 clear ones are sweet soy, sweet chilli and oil. The silver shiny ones is generally fired onion and a salty garicy powder.
    There are more forms of instant noodles here, in fact I could show in my local oriental market they have an entire wall shelf of instant noodles, but that's what's relevant for the sake of this video.

    gundog. you brought up butter, wonder why you don't see butter or a butter type spread in more rations?

    • @MonMalthias
      @MonMalthias 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      keith moore Butter tends to spoil unless salted, or go rancid, or melt in high heat. Then again, I'm sure that if food scientists were put to it, they'd find a way to make it work in a ration. Maybe if it had an antioxidant like EDTA and was cut with shortening it might work.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a nice "butter" too and total fan of the EPa butter. Anything will spoil under the right conditions but I would be thrilled with butter and red pepper flakes in every ration. Cheers!

    Seems like a lot of work and time consuming . When I was on FEX we ate our US MRE cold and out of there containers .Did heat up the coffee or tea .

    • @smokijo3163
      @smokijo3163 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen that US MREs can be heated up before use and have personally eaten Australian RatPacs cold straight from their packages. Admittedly that was 15 plus years ago but still current conditions dictate which way you go at the time. Thankfully for me I just did not have time to heat them at the time and was in battle conditions.

  • @glenmcinnes4824

    don't forget as a 24 hour ration, lots of Grazing & Between Main Meal snacking options to keep your energy levels up and give you things to do when the outside world isn't being "Interesting", even if that thing to do is debating the merits of your snacking options and main meal combos.
    experimenting with CR1M component combos helps combat MRE Fatigue.
    nothing explicitly wrong, but Tuna & Rice or Chicken & Rice would be more common than BBQ Beef and Rice, but now that you think about it it works.
    As had bean said Cheese & Vegemite classic combo, Dairy helps balance the flavor of yeast extracts, that's why you go with the butter or cheese if you are not in to heavy yeast flavors.
    Good to know We are still doing Army Food right, now to get rid of that last tin and drop in some FRH's so we don't have to eat our Tucker cold, or stop & make fire.

    In Aussie/NZ BBQ is any meat cooked outside on anything from a hot plate to charcoal...usually it's just burned sausages with white bread and tomato sauce, steaks, or chops....nothing compared to the American BBQ styles and capsicum here refers to what Americans call "Bell peppers"

      gundog4314 hi gundog. I was listening to your vids as I was trying to drop off to sleep and if I remember correctly and wasn't dreaming I heard you puzzling out something called duck but wasn't duck. I forgot it was pork or maybe chicken.
      I had an interesting story about that. I watch Andrew Zimmern from bizzare foods. Anyway I believe he was in India and they had a similar situation only it was called duck but was in fact fish. It turns out that in the 1800's they named the fish dish after a famous train that was running nearby at the time. It was named after the Bombay duck. So it was called duck but was a fish dish.
      Don't remember which ration you were dealing w that as I had knee pain and was tired on medication. Just thought though I would relay that story to you.
      Have a great day 😉

    You should drain the noodles first, then mix all the seasoning sachets on to the noodles and then mix it. Because it says "mi goreng" which is translated to "fried noodles" in Indonesian. But if that works for you, i can't complain :D

    Capsicum isn't spicy, it's what us Aussies call bell peppers. It'd be the little green or red chunks. Also, while you're heating up the noodles, dip the sauces packet in to warm up the oil and soy sauce. Makes it easier to add to the noodles.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny how we use the same words and they have totally different meanings. Capsicum to you guys is mild bell pepper. Capiscum to us is one of the active ingredients for Oleoresin Capsicum or pepper spray which is pretty darn hot. I got the Mi Goreng prep down now after making it a few times the proper way. Cheers Mate!

  • @GaryHess
    @GaryHess 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Capsicum is what Australians and many British call bell peppers. That's why you don't taste any heat. Capsicum literally means "pepper" and every pepper (spicy or not) include it in its true Latin name. I have no idea why some countries tend to call certain types of peppers as Capsicum, though.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason most people in the US associate it with heat is OC spray or Pepper Spray, which is an ingredient in some spicy recipes not to mention application by law enforcement or by even your own jerk friends for their amusement. OC literally means Oleoresin Capiscum, so by it's latin definition sure it's a pepper, but by OC's definition it's hot as fu... well you know HAHA! Cheers Gary

      Yeast is not popular in Spain. We prefer cheese cream, butter, margarine, extra virgin olive oil , marmalade, crushed tomato or chocolate.
      Every country has the same existential problems: Coke or Coca Cola? Sprite or SevenUp? Olive oil or vinegar? Ketchup or mustard? Butter or margarine? Cola Cao or Nesquik? Nutella or Nocilla?... hahahaha

    i think that's not how you do the noodles..
    first you boil the water then add the noodle to the boil water and boil itu for another 3 mins then rinse the water and add seasoning, oil and sweet soysauce, add chili sauce if you like spicy then add fried onion last. there you get delicious fried noodle (i think it's indomie from indonesia)
