Thanks for the lovely conversation, Derri and Evie. You are definitely not the only ones projecting. 😉

Thanks for listening Chadia, do feel free to ask about stuff you might like us to mention or talk about in later episodes (I'm SO getting Evie back!), I'm wide open to feedback!

Wow I’ve been looking for a conversation like this! I’ve only read RotE once, but I’ve wanted so badly to talk about it. I’ve tried to listen to a few different podcasts and they spend so much time making fun of Fitz, complaining about his illogical choices and judging him for his flaws that I stopped listening. I think that considering everything that Fitz went through it is illogical to expect him not to behave and think the way he does. The abandonment, his lack of identity, the shame, being taught he has to keep the family secrets, that love is transactional, and his belief he has to please people for them to love him- pulls him in so many directions and affects all his relationships. And these things he’s taught become core beliefs he retains throughout his whole life.
Like you Derri I related to him so much. I think whether you relate to him or not, if you read him with empathy you see that despite all his flaws there is so much good in him and that is why he is able as the Catalyst to change the world for the better.
I could talk about Fitzy and these books for hours and haven’t had anyone to do it with haha

Oh, this has made my day!
I hope you've gone on and enjoyed some of the other discussions I've had with people, and if you need more, here are a few - Mike is working through the series on his channel and is having panel discussions @mikesbookreviews, Anitha is most of the way through the Rain Wild Chronicles, and her panel talks are here @anithagade7609, and I'm waiting for when these two awesome guys finish up Liveships I intend to join them for a FULL trilogy discussion. @BooksWithBenghisKahn and @ColinsCornerYT
There's plenty of ❤Hobb❤ love in the various 'booktube' discord channels, as well as bookish love for many many others...
There will be discord links in Mike's videos, and from there, I'm certain you'll find others to join too - I highly recommend checking out The Grimoire discord, which is run by a handful of 'small' booktubers.
      Welcome to booktube!

Great discussion! Have just finished AQ and loved it.
One of the reasons I took so long to start Farseer is that I have depression and anxiety since childhood, and worried it would trigger me. Having read the trilogy, I can say it didn’t make my depression any worse - if that helps anyone out there. I sympathise with Fitz a lot, since I have been the cuckoo everywhere too, belonging nowhere, but I didn’t identify with him (no one yet), perhaps because I have experienced different things. Also, I never believed Burrich did ‘that’ since that would have been against his character. Come to think of it, I think my husband is a kind of Burrich (kind, nurturing, loyal, grumpy). Chade stroke a chord with me, perhaps again because I had someone like him in my childhood, someone who defined my life, who gave me my love of reading (he taught me super young).
And this is it, why Hobb is so amazing. She creates characters that not only are believable but that you can recognise in your life. How she achieves this in a first person narrative flabbergasts me. The epigraphs help but still. Going to start Liveship in Jan.

I don't know how your comment fell through the gaps Vero, but I'm glad I found it now! I agree wholeheartedly. How ❤️Robin Hobb❤️ manages to flesh out the supporting characters while in first person is completely beyond me. Yet hers are among the most well realized characters I've ever read. I'll keep an eye out for you in discord (or TOTALLY feel free to pm me) as you travel through the Liveship Traders, because it's a hell of a ride, and you will definitely have thoughts you need to share.

Thank you so much for letting me talk Fitz and Farseer with you! It was such a delight, even though I (sometimes) have trouble formulating my thoughts and feelings into (coherent) words. I can't wait to talk more!

I just spent over $100 to get a copy of the Illustrated Edition of Royal Assassin and this discussion has really ramped up my reread priorities for RotE! I miss my best friend haha

The illustrated editions are so beautiful, the art by Magali Villenueve is magical, as for wanting to re-read? I know exactly how you feel 😄

I love these discussions with Evie, brilliant stuff! I am so happy to see more Robin Hobb content on youtube, to me it has always been a mystery why she is not talked about more.
Spoilers below for the Farseer trilogy!
Derri, you said that 6 year old Fitz has no memories of his previous life. It has been a couple of years since my last re-read, but I always read it as adult Fitz not having those memories because he put them in Girl-on-a-Dragon. Am I remembering it wrong?

      Hi Torbjörn,
I'm happy you're enjoying these, there are more to come, because like you, I think there's a wealth of discussion worthy material in these books.
As for Fitz' childhood memories, yes, and no.
We learn immediately that Fitz' memories begin at the age of 6, and he references that many times throughout ... but - spoilers for Farseer..
.. At the end of Assassin's Quest, when he unlocks Kettle/Kestrel's walls, she tells him that he DOES have those memories, but that he'd walled them away from himself in the hurt of abandonment - on that realization, he thrusts the unwanted emotional trauma, along with the far more recent emotional blows, into Girl-on-a-dragon...
Thanks for asking, I hope that helped.

      @@derrisreaditbefore Very helpful! Thank you!
I am currently reading through the Malazan books, but after that I think it might be time for another RotE re-read :)
