Redhead steering box for a 2001 F250

  • I have been fighting with excessive play in my trucks steering for years. I replaced the factory steering box shortly after I bought the truck with 100,000 miles on it thinking the box was worn out. I replaced it with a rebuilt factory unit from O'Reillys and wasn't much better. Today I put in a Redhead steering box and am really pleased with it. The steering it way tighter today that it has ever been. Drives like a modern truck again! Now at 268,000 miles there is no play in the steering at all.

    Took your advice, my 01 7.3 4x4 steering was like boat swaying in the ocean. I bought a redhead, had it installed. What a massive difference. Steering is support tight like new again. Thank for the info.

      While I still love my steering box, I have heard the res tops are not as good now as when I bought mine. You may want to look into a blue top now instead of the red, but definitely not a remanufactured one fron the local parts store.

    Redhead is a remanufactured steering box. That's what they do with your core.

    There's an adjustment on the steering box, if you loosen the nut and tighten the screw it will take the play out, try one turn at a time first and if more is needed then proceed until the play is gone.

    • @openhighwayproductions
      @openhighwayproductions ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you personally done this on a Super Duty and received good results? The reason I ask is, that it is my understanding, the gear inside will wear a flat spot resulting in the wheel swaying or sawing constantly left or right of center...

    I have heard more bad stuff about redhead boxes then good. A friend of mine son went thru 2 of them and finally found a shop locally that rebuilt one for him. The shop didn't want to trash talk anyone but said that they have had a lot of rebuilt boxes from rebuilds including redheads that they took apart and found issues with. This shop rebuilds a lot of boxes for offroad race trucks and has a good reputation so I am going with them instead of mass produced boxes from rebuilds like redhead and bluehead. Got my info from a guy that races offroad trucks and his stuff is top notch stuff.

      You can buy them off redhead's website, they're at least 3x the price of a refurbished unit from rockauto. I installed a refurb. unit on my e350 this winter and it was very simple. you have to connect the powersteering hose's to the unit before you mount it. They were too difficult to line up when I mounted the steering gear box to the frame before screwing on the lines.

      @@mr.washington1982 if you have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth with the engine off. You should be able to look at the steering arm. It the wheel move and the steering arm doesn't then the steering box has play. If not then the wandering is something else like worn ball joints.
