I couldn't stand Luis' mother. She's so ungrateful and treats him like shit despite the fact he's the only one that does anything for her. I feel for Luis
Honestly, she might just be a genuine narc. As someone who lived with a Narc grandmother for a large part of my life. I genuinely resented his mother. I just cannot tolerate a monster like his mother. Never again. His siblings are just as awful. They are both victims and abusers. Honestly Luis deserved so much better.

She's based on Tony's mom in Scarface, she doesn't accept the kind of life her son does and is ashamed of him even knowing he had no other choice growing up, the only difference is that Luis' mom is an hypocrite since despite not accepting her son's criminal life she still takes his money whereas Tony's mom doesn't want them cause she knows where those money come from.

At least Luis tries to make his way in life, Armando is a fool for thinking this is what being Dominican is. Sorry for the rant but growing up with these games, has helped me deal with and understand some of my own issues with family.

What is really sus and weird is how Ernesto Luis’s brother attempts to “straighten” him out through email but he can’t send money to his moms since he’s working as an accountant. Hell even the sister is either defending or justifying the mother’s actions and behavior. His siblings don’t help out with their mother I bet they left because she was hard on them too.
No wonder Luis stays Downtown a lot of times and he will go back to the Heights when he’s needed not wanted.
Yeah that always annoyed me, his brother Ernest was acting like a complete dick, talking down on Luis although Luis is the only one who’s really trying to supporting his mom and making sure she’s okay. That’s why I always responded negatively towards him

I fully agree, she's annoying but I wouldn't say she's a terrible person she's still a human being at the end of the day, she's not vile like Toni Cipriani's mother who litterally put a price on his head.
The problem is she only has poor judgement kind of like Roman Bellic, actually both characters are much more closer than her with Ma Cipriani as both of them dealt with loan sharks and brought the protagonist into this (if you think about it the whole IV storyline would have likely never happened if it wasn't for this) but while maybe not the best mother, she still cared for her children. It's also kind of cute and funny the cutscene when she made a meal for Luis' friends. 😂

R*'s writing with GTA 4's DLCs was 💯 between Niko, Johnny and Luis, shit felt so real.
The son of a Dominican mom can never tell her she’s wrong. When Luis got tight at her for taking money from a loan shark she got mad at him for looking out after her. Luis LITERALLY saves her from the debt and the loan shark and she still gets mad at Luis. And I felt that as a Dominican man, I can never tell my mom she wrong 😂
That Sweet/Luis comparison was spot on. I never thought of it, but you’re definitely correct. I also didn’t pay too much attention on the relationship between Luis and his mother. He was clearly very upset and sad about her negative feelings towards him and it’s quite sad, but I think Adriana’s point is that Luis needlessly still does risks his life and had an opportunity to escape that life of getting into trouble but did not, not necessarily because he still commits crimes and works for criminals. Luis’ mom isn’t the best parent but she clearly does love Luis and wants him to have a career that she couldn’t have and have a supportive child that makes her happy. Also I think her comparison of Luis and his dad was meant to illustrate how his dad also got into trouble and seems to have a temper as well. Luis acknowledges his similarities with his father sometimes.
Luis is one of my favorite characters because he teaches a vital life lesson. You can have a ton of friends, money and a great job but it can all be falling apart in ways the outside world doesn’t know.
My mom is just like this. Except shes puerto rican. Shes from NY but we live in Miami. Always saying she wants whats best for me, but never accepts that I love my life how it is. Ironically Im also a bouncer after I got out of the military. She'll take my money when she needs it, but never without letting me forget that in her eyes I could do better.

Nah Trevor's mum is beating her, it's implied that she sexually-assaulted him and seeing her in post-campaign only uses her son to get her drugs or probably kill for her.
Like you said, his mom sees too much of Luis's father in him and therefore takes out her anger at him leaving on Luis. Then she does the typical Latina/Asian mom thing where she compares him to other people's kids even though it's a lie and Luis is honest with her. She then puts her own children above him even though they essentially abandoned her to her fate in poverty. Even his accounting brother probably has that ego of his cause his mom protected him and elevated him in status among her friends while talking down on Luis.
The worst thing is if Luis does leave, in her mind it will just prove everything she was saying about him being a loser who can't even care for his own mother, while ignoring that it's the same thing her other children are doing.
Rockstar made an immaculate job on nailing the Latin/hispanic mother to son relationship along with their issues. I love my ma but I can see within the comments this lady strikes a chord that is familiar within us.

It’s funny to see stuff like this because the hypocrisy is wild. The last kid is left behind to look out for their mother in the ghetto because the other kids got out and gets lambasted and compared to the father that left. Is constantly being belittled by his mother wanting her son to be like her other two absent children that she can brag about. Complains about what he would do to get the money yet will take from other gangsters that would kill her, rather than take her son’s money and support. While somehow he still has to do illegal shit just to make sure she’s taken care of. Luis is a saint to me because I couldn’t imagine all I can just for my mom to keep on me even though she’s not in a position to talk. I wish Luis got to have that moment with his siblings or his mom that sweet had with CJ about him having to do the dirty work. Protecting his family and throwing his life away just to make sure they could survive.

Family can be Complicated
It's really tragic that she's like that with him but I think a lot of us can relate to their relationship. Mom's are sometimes just stuck in their ways and refuse to take an L on anything because they've built themselves up in their heads to be right no matter what because their the mom and they know better just because. As a kid I didn't relate to their dynamic at all but now that I'm 25 and my mother had gotten older and become similar to this character I can totally understand his frustration. I do like that at the end though Luis seems to just accept her for who and how she is and tells her that he loves her and they are able to move forward. That also is something I can relate to as after a few years of clashing with my friend and trying to change her and make her be more open minded towards my point of view of things I learned to just love her and stop trying to change her even if I feel im ultimately still right. If she's happy that's all that matters.

With me having had a strained (and downright abusive) relationship with my mom, especially coming more to a head as I reached my double-digits, seeing how this relationship turned out hits really close to home for me. I always felt like I wasn't what my mom wanted, regardless of whether other family members say otherwise, so seeing how outward she is about Luis not being what she wanted and not even hiding her contempt over him cuts me pretty deep/reopens the old wound, because it reminds me of my own outlook on my childhood, hence my near-seething hatred and annoyance towards Mrs. Lopez. It's not fair to him, because at least he tries. Wanting to be independent and prideful are one thing, but comparing someone to someone else who leads a different, and perhaps luckier (or unluckier) life is just plain wrong. We're not defective clones or copies of other people, we're human. And humans are meant to be different and follow their own paths.
