I'm amazed how reasonable these seem to be Phill, thanks for taking the time to review these for us, I guess a chisel is a pretty simple tool , and as you said edge retention is key, so it would be great if you could give us an update in a few months.
A lot of people obsess about the exact formulation of the blade and it's hardness, but you have shown acceptable results are achievable at a cost anyone could afford as long as you know how to sharpen them properly.
Btw, if you do have issues with the edge fracturing, it may well be worth establishing a secondary bevel at a steeper angle which should help make the edge more resilient.

From the colonies. I am assuming that somewhere on the packaging would be the three words that make me cringe; Made in China. A friend of mine is a metallurgist , and he is quick to point out that the Chinese have wide swings in their quality control standards. I have used chisels that had Made in Indonesia stamped on them; from opening the package, to the stones, then on to the recycling barrel in less than one day. My point is that you just don't know what grade of steel that you are getting. When I teach my students in hand woodworking, I recommend that they go to the pawn shop and find some old Stanley chisels, take them home and break out the stones, then practice joinery until your arms ache. At that point , I do recommend that they take out a loan on their first born and purchase one or two high end chisels for dovetailing and paring. Narex appears to be the hot ticket currently. Phil, this is a good straight forward review that you did, well done. I apologize that my comment is long winded, but I wanted students/newbies to be aware of possible variations in quality.

Hi, yes I agree with you. There's no real way of knowing the true hardness rating of the metal with these budget chisels. I would also advise if you are on a tight budget and want some good chisels...look for the oldest ones you can find. Or maybe buy a set of Narex as they seem to have a good quality standard. Many budget chisel sets these days seem very similar from £5 to £30 I'm not sure if there is much difference in the metal quality. The old sets of Footprint chisels seem pretty good and you can still buy sets of those on eBay in good order. They seem like good heavy chisels for someone starting out on a tight budget. Thanks for your comments 👍🏻
