  • Spitting Cave and China Walls are popular cliff jumping spots on Oahu.
We lost all of our jumping footage that we had at Spitting cave, but the rock is marked with arrows at the top where you can jump. Jumping from the top is about 60-70 feet. You can also climb down and jump from lower heights. Jumping at Spitting Cave is dangerous because there is a smaller landing zone, a strong current that can pull/smash you into the cave or out in the ocean, and it can be difficult to climb back out.
Spitting Cave gets its name because waves crash into it causing it to "spit" (spray) water back out. It's just a short walk to the cliffs where you can see the cave spray and it's only a short distance away from China Walls.
China walls is a stretch of lava rock ledges and cliffs that are popular for cliff jumping. The jumps at China Walls are a lot shorter and safer than Spitting Cave, but if there is a swell it can still be difficult to climb back out. You can actually walk along the cliff ledges all the way from China Walls to Spitting Cave.

how hard was it to swim out of the currents from the high jump? I am a year round swimmer, so do you think it would be hard to swim out of the currents?

It depends on the day. I would say it's probably always hard, but some days it could be almost impossible. If you are jumping at the spitting cave, I was able to get out easiest just a little too the left (looking out to the ocean) where the water seamed to be moving up and down instead of in and out. You can kind of just grab the rock when the water is up and then when it drops climb out quickly. If you are in the wrong spot though the water can pull you away from the rock or push you into it. The rock is sharp and may have urchins on it as well. Check the surf report before hand and try to pick a mellow day. If the water looks too schetchy come back another day. I saw a guy jump there one day and he couldn't get back out. Luckily he got saved by a jet ski.
If you want to jump at China Walls, it's a little easier to get out and there are usually lots of people jumping so you can watch them, but the jumps are way smaller.

I’m not an avid swimmer and I did the jump more than 20 years ago but it’s not that bad however it will depend on conditions. I grew up out here and I’ve seen the rescue helicopters go out there more times than I can tell you. Lots of people get hurt and lots drown. It’s a great jump and beautiful location but there are safer jumps than the big one out here. Chill at China walls and have a good time. Don’t jump spitting caves.

There are a few spots you can climb out. It can be difficult to climb out though, depending on the size of the waves.

It really depends on the day and waves. You could go and watch other people jump and climb out and make a decision based off of that. China Walls will be a lot easier and probably more likely to have more people than Spitting Cave. But I wouldn't jump if you're not 100% confident you can get out. People have needed rescues at both places. Both are cool places to visit though, even if you don't jump.
