      Its great but Im not liking the fact that is creates a new channel in 360 console each time, and these cannot be grouped or foldered in any way, you end up with a LOT of console channels ;-) also it scans every single plugin including synths / drums etc

      @@Newmusicreviewyes if you have multiple link plugins on a single channel that is what you get I guess. I do not intend to use it this way though, just one Link plugin in every channel so I can use the plugin mixer layer. Probably not even going to put another effects plugin in there.

    Thank you so much for you videos! You are always explaining things in a very populated and nice way, and thats why i always love to watch your videos. You are straight to the most important parts! I've just got UF1and UC1, and i really love to use them on Cubase, only struggle i had, was to know exactly how to do the channel selection. Just found your video referencing me and my personal ssl UC-1 fail. I'm glad SSL fixed their (imho) main issue for you, although I still don't get it, that we should buy such an expensive piece of gear, and the first thing we'll need is a workaround to fix it's main problem with a bunch of plugins. A tip for anyone who doesn't have the desk space for the SSL hardware. If you are considering a second monitor then go for a touch screen. Dedicate 360 app to the touch screen. You can interact directly with each channel. This is as close as you'll get to mimicking the feel of mixing on a console. Congrats to SSL great software

      I use Steinberg CC121. The unfortunate reality with all of these types of controllers with mappable buttons is, it takes quite a while for muscle memory to build, and then if you get a different controller, it's gone. I find it's faster and easier to do most things with the keyboard and just map and slowly learn more hotkeys, which you can use forever. And a keyboard has a heck of a lot of keys, especially including modifier keys. Hundreds of functions available in a split second. I do use the hardware buttons for pulling up the channel and inst editors, automation buttons, and mute/solo, and a flying fader and pan control is obviously great, but no matter how much I use it, the mouse is just so much faster and more accurate for EQ and keyboard is faster for transport and most other things. SSL uc1 may be an exception if you like SSL Channel strips and I could see that being very quick if you put them on every channel, but I would not use uf1 to control plug-ins when I could just use the mouse. I think fixed buttons are okay. Mappable buttons are a pain. Keyboard shortcuts are fastest.

    The bank issue is the same with other single fader controllers too, not just the SSL UF-8, the Behringer X Touch does the same thing, a bank of 8 which has to be moved along, this is a limitation of the protocol

      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I kind of understood that too but I remember seeing "somewhere" that it was working ok in Logic and Reaper for example. So I was a bit cautious mentioning it like that in the video :). Here is the summary of SSL: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track
      But when you're talking Cubase, yes I guess it is the same thing with all control surfaces unless they have a dedicated protocol like Eucon.

    • @newtype-tv
      @newtype-tv 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are some older single fader controllers like the Presonus Fader Port that do follow track select using the Mackie protocol. I’m really not sure why SSL can’t get it to work. I also don’t know why they don’t tack advantage of the MIDI controller scripts.

      @@newtype-tv I’ve heard some mixed info on the Presonus Faderport so unsure whether that can now follow track selection. • @G_handle
      @G_handle 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to add $.02 the 8-channel Bank IS a part of the MCU protocol, and all the dozen or so MCU controllers I've owned/used over the years have Channel and Bank Left & Right buttons.
      However, the real issue is how each DAW Implements the MCU protocol. Many have figured out how to implement it where the Single fader controllers follow the selected track b-directionally, so if you select with either the MCU or the Mouse, the other will follow. And if you are on say Channel 8 of an 8 channel bank, clicking the channel-right button will move to Channel 9 and the next bank of 8.
      If Cubase isn't doing this, send in a request to Steinberg.

    • @LanewoodStudios
      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@G_handle that works if you move to the next bank on the UF1. It doesn’t work if you select track 9 in Cubase though. That does not change the bank and therefore the channel is not selected on the UF1.

      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes I mention the shift-alt trick in the text on my video. Forgot to mention it so was done during editing. I guess the bank issue is just the way Cubase has implemented the Mackie protocol. But it affects quite a lot of other DAWs as well.

  • @boogiexx
    @boogiexx 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I also work in cubase and I can 100% confirm that I don't have any tracking issues the the way you're showing in this video uf1 follows all channels perfectly ( with or without plugins) and switches between banks automatically, while uf 1 can only follow channels that have ssl channel strip or ssl link plugin on them. the way I used them the way I use it is to use uf1 for switching between channels in cubase if I have multiple link link plugins on 1 channel I use uc1 chanell knob in extended mode ( that you enter by pressing the left arrow near the channel knob) that channel knob switches between SSL link plugins our channel strip and it even shows the name of the plugin on the uc1 display. you just have to set it up.

    • @LanewoodStudios
      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have a UC1 myself but that should not be a significant difference in the 'Follow selected track' issue. If you select a track with your mouse in Cubase, outside of the currently selected bank on the UF1, the track will be selected in Cubase but not on the UF1. SSL also states that that will not work due to the Mackie MCU implementation in Cubase, and some other DAWS; check it out over here: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#follow-selected-track-0-0

      @@LanewoodStudios That's the thing I also don't know I had UF-1 and it also didn't follow outside the bank range, the chanell wheel also behaved strange when you went up the channels 1-20 it stopped on the last channel and i had to switch bank manually, when I went down the channels for 20-1 it automatically switched banks. Then I bought UC-1 and after trying out multiple things it works fine, although selecting chanell outside the range with the mouse doesn't always work but sometimes it definitely does. it switches both uc1, uf1 and bank range. I have enabled plugin mixer layer and midi cc layer and played with them (assigned functions). I still didn't have the time to try replicating it on another computer.

    • @LanewoodStudios

    Do you have experience with Eucon/Avid Dock & S1? If so, how would you compare the SSL system to Eucon? I know SSL works via Mackie. The best part of Eucon is being able to control plugin parameters and custom map them. This lets you almost throughout the mixing session have hands off the mouse. Does SSL support plugin control (not only from SSL but also other vendors), and is it possible to map parameters to chosen knobs? Thanks.

    Cubase 13.0.41 and SSL Link 1.0.33 seems to doesn't work well together, mixer faders don't react to changes on the controller fader using UF-1. Do you have the same experience?

    Bigest problem for me is not having sends on uf1 when its in plugin mixer layer.

      I kind of understood from this article that hey added sends to the plugin mixer layer as well, but I have not been able to find it yet. support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#h_01HCCHY0WK8R4DR6VSMFXSKAA0

    In Logic Pro X there is no problem with the bank. Somehow they solved it. No problem in Reaper either. S1 and Ableton Live? You need to look for files to replace on the Internet. Cubase is outdated in so many ways...

    • @LanewoodStudios
      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it works on some DAWs but not on others: support.solidstatelogic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/11252007052445-Follow-selected-track#follow-selected-track-0-0
      Apart from that, Cubase has always worked fine for me.

    An analog vu meter for a daw is kinda ironically funny

      Ha it’s still used a lot. There are many plugins for VU meters. I’ve always used VUMT before for example and the VU meter in the Britson plugin for gain staging each channel.

      Good question, not sure there is a dedicated one but I guess you can map CTRL-Z to a key on the UF1

    Ok I think I figured out the follow problem and it's definitely UF-1 ( probably UF-8 as well) only, UC-1 works perfectly , You have to be in plugin mixer layer for UF-1 to follow the tracks outside bank selection, you can use the plugin button that should be pinned to top right button to switch fader on UF-1 between plugin and DAW so you can change volume and use solo cut buttons, you channel knob should browns through inserts ( channel strip/link plugins) and you can edit them, the only issue I see is when you come back from Plugin mixer layer to DAW layer it switches focus to whatever channel you were working on before selecting the channel with mouse. I don't know how they can explain the problem being related to Mackie control limitations since both UF-1 and UC-1use the same protocol and UC1 doesn't have any problems and you can mouse switch channels and browse through them seamlessly but UF-1 is not following, witch is definitely weird since UC-1 follows UF-1 perfectly.

    • @LanewoodStudios
      @LanewoodStudios  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes that’s exactly what the video is about. If you use plugin mixer layer with that new 360 link plugin on every channel track follow will work. If you use DAW layer it will not follow. DAW layer uses the Mackie protocol which causes track follow to only work within a bank on some DAWs. That’s confirmed by the SSL tech article I linked.
