I'm a huge MDZ Jimmy Ryu fan so this is not throwing shade. What do you guys think Jimmy can do better as a player to reach Legend Rank?

    • @ThisIsAMKIDD

To note, I’ve been watching Jimmy since the beginning and my analysis is purely based on his overall game play and not execution. I understand he has a new controller but none of my analysis is about his lack of execution and is about my personal observation of his play since sf6 first came out until now. Also, I know this may be asking a lot from TH-cam but keep comments positive and constructive. Jimmy is a great player and person and I only want to see him succeed and be the best.

Ryu, like Luke, is a character whose defense is more effective than attacking, both of them are honest character. Best Luke players(Luke only) play more defensive(Kawano, Chris Wong, Bonchan). The best Luke players who could get consistent results(most of the times, menard use Blanka), Chris Wong show us how to play Luke effectively, you need to have extremely good defense.
However, defense in sf6 is much more difficult than attacking. Just because you can't stop the raw drive rush stably is almost equal to that you can't anti air effectively, and you will be "jumped in" by the opponent several times in one fight. Only a few players can stop raw drive rush consistently, Jimmy is not one of them, maybe that is why he play agressively, because defense is so difficult in sf6.
From the statistical data, the win rate of Ryu is close to 5.0 for 1700+ MR players, but the statistics will not tell us how much more effort Ryu players need to put in to reach 1700 than other characters.

@@computervision557 Agree to a degree regarding defense. As for honest characters, Luke is one of the most dishonest characters in the game! Not honest at all. The true honest characters in SF6 are Ryu and AKI. Zangief is arguably third most honest character but the level of damage via his SPD that capcom provided to him is ridiculous and more of a "compensation" due to his move and mix-up limitations.

Everyone asking for Ryu buff, but if Ryu really become a strong character, he will look like another Luke eventually.
Luke is a better Ryu, if Ryu want to keep up with those insane character like DJ, Ken, Chun Li, Juri, Guile, Zangief(he is not as bad as everyone think, only a few bad match up, JP, Dhalsim and Lily) etc, performance of his tool kits need to be better, just like Luke.

Jimmy still has those muscle memory from V that doesn't really apply to the game anymore. Also he does way too much meaningless drive rush cancel that easily gets himself short on drive meter. His jump-in timings are not great, whereas he could add an extra layer of pressure mixing up jump-ins with drive impact/throw especially when the opponent is cornered. His damage output is lacking more often than not, and he struggles to find the optimal combo to finish a round. On top of those, he tends to drop combos a lot. I mean A LOT compared to other high level players, to the point that he gets so tilted because of it and ends up succuming to autopiloting and losing. Admittedly he has had some of those issues in V but they seem much more notable and do more damage to his gameplay in 6. I watch Jimmy's stream from time to time as a Ryu main. Not quite a fan of him making lower level players look stupid and whatnot, but him being technical with the character and the way he interacts with chat are all pretty enjoyable. I hope he still cares enough to prioritize leveling up his gameplay.

  • @azarel7
    @azarel7 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

I think you're right. He probably needs to choose a primary play style. Teiga's Ryu is really good at the patient/counter attack play and he hit Legend rank. Very technical as well. Could take a page out of his book.
On the other hand, Paladin now is kind of balanced, but Ending Walker especially and Kakeru are offensive but it works because it's grounded...they hardly jump unless it's against a Guile. I find EW and Kakeru just walk opponents into the corner.

I think Jimmy still hasn't gotten over his sf5 mentality. He almost never shoots, depleting his attack bars faster than other players. Most of the time, he just sticks to basic combos when he needs to get into damage-dealing combos. This allows him to be defeated even if he makes the slightest mistake at the end of the game. And he shows the cards in his hand to his opponent and his opponents can easily smell this scent. As I said, their influence mostly stems from the Sf5 mentality. He needs to get over this.

Yeah there's probably Family issues (wife, kids etc) like with anyone else, but he always gets a set amount of good hours to just grind the game. No, there's other fundamental issues that he has in his gameplay. Issues that he probably has never really come to terms with since SFV days.

He's obviously missing out on good damage and more consistent antiairs but that's not the deep issue I'm referring to. And yeah your right, the fact that he hasn't sorted out that problem yet shows his mindset. He's just not putting in the time to fix his weaknesses and flaws. For instance Daigo use to spend like 10 mins in training mode doing shoryukens with hitbox on both sides, while talking to chat. That's someone who knows he has a glaring flaw and takes the time to solve it even during his work hours.

I’m MASTER at 1500mr and have beaten master as high as 1800 MR, I’m not gonna even bother getting my deejay any better, I know I could get better but it’s pointless imo, I’d rather just play other characters and chill having fun and play other games, maybe he’s the same

the reason why jimmy is plateauing is he fumbles and have bad jumping habits. if you've watch his streams he tends to panic jump in the corner or in neutral positions where he really shouldn't have, instead of holding composure. I also noticed he drops combos moreso when compared other players in 2k+ that are much more consistent. his jumping issue is probably his worst vice, he would jump very predictably in the corner or randomly in neutral giving his opponents free DPs. my 2c

I don't believe Jimmy jumps as much as you think, it's a case by case basis. In fact, he is usually grounded but, as you detected, there is something else that is going on that is preventing him from going to 1900+ MR for he has a fantastic Ryu.
I think he needs more sessions with Paladin and study more pro gamers match up to help him resolve it. Lucky for him, he is doing that. The rest of the stuff you mentioned I agree with, especially when it comes to "move choices" for there is "showmanship" and simply "going for the kill". I think SnakeEyes' Ryu is a perfect example of "going for the kill" for his Ryu is a beautiful AFFIRMATIVE and Assassination style Ryu. Also, another of Jimmy's issues is he need to work on his footsies for he is lacking or not doing enough of it as he prefers Rushing his opponents more so than focusing on zoning and spacing choice. The best example of demonstrating Footsies is Kakeru. If he can improves on those aspect then he would be able to simply "walk" his opponents to the corner, which is another form of pressure-play that EndingWalker, Daigo, Kakeru, Yas, SnakeEyes and Kazunoko are good at. So footsies, Zoning, Pressure-Play via walking and Fighting Attitude, as in "going for the kill", are most likely the core issues that are preventing Jimmy from going to the next level.
In order from the very best, I think the Top 15 Ryu players today are the following: *Daigo < Kakeru < Paladin < Kawano < Kazunoko < Goto < EndingWalker < .Yas < SnakeEyes < Naruo < Darlin < Semy < Sekiganryu
