  • Today I treated my red golden pheasant who had a sinus infection. I also freshened up the waters. Finally I finished winterizing the coop.

OK buddy, I cannot ignore this that I need to tell you. First thing first, you should have had an extra set of hands. You should not ever do something like this again by yourself, this is irresponsible. Second thing, you should have cleaned the area before you cut it open. This can cause a horrible staph infection because you did not clean the area nor did you use a sterile knife. Clean is not sterile. Shame on you. Third thing is that you should have cleaned all the blood up around the eye and then used an antiseptic to prevent post surgical infection. These animals depend on us as they cannot talk so you have to be their advocate, the puss you drained from the site, you should have sent that off to your vet and ask him to do the pathology on it. This would have told you whether or not the penicillin would resolve the infection. I know you did not want to do it, but if you choose to do it, you have to do it the right way. Staph infections are a danger to him and you. You were wreck-less and insensitive in the care of your bird. Would you like me take a non-sterile knife and cut your lower eye lid? I don't think so, you can do better than this, wear gloves next time too.
