Y'know. Maybe I'm not supposed to spend time in Dirtmouth. Maybe. But despite that, it's the place I return to after beating a boss, or retrieving an item that I needed, or discovering a new area's stag station. There's something nice about seeing Elderbug and Bretta and visiting the shopkeepers even though I know that I've bought them all out and they've got no new dialogue. It's the one familiar thing in a vast kingdom of hostility.

. Honestly...I find Greenpath to be one of the most forgettable areas in the game. Everything looks the same, save for the lake and upper cave area. The layout of the area is also very unintuitive. You are basically wandering aimlessly until you get the moth cloak ability. It's a real mess getting out of Greenpath as there are multiple areas that you can access with the cloak and any of them could be the exit out of Greenpath, but only one ledge leads to the Fungal Wastes and everything else leads to a dead end.
This area almost made me quit the game. I just kept walking in circles being unable to find Cofnyfer (idk if he's supposed to show up in this area) and it's hard to explore because everything looks the same.

@@Fyrestar the mantis village is a great zone and the platforming with down strike is kinda interesting, while the hive is just bull shit annnoying monsters in every room, it's one of the rare zone that looks completly out of place, like if you wasn't playing the same game. i mean you just have to go in a room kill monsters go to the other one repeat 4 time kill the boss where's the freacking exploration. hive sucks only the reward is good to get you threw path of pain without risks

i like the abyss due to its platforming, for me its quite easy, and its fun to practice, and plus i explore alot, so i like to just search around the abyss every so often.
Unpopular opinion: Deepnest is the best zone in the game. It's easily the most immersive zone and it instills a dread unparalleled by any other zones in game. Its the spookiest zone in any non-horror game I've played, and that's an accomplishment. It doesn't have a decent boss, but when I think of Hollow Knight Deepnest is inevitably the area I remember the best while understanding the least. Its sound design and enemy design are perfect for the environment and the scuttling noises and somewhat erratic movements of the Corpse Creepers still make me physically uncomfortable. It's beyond claustrophobic and I'm desperate to escape whenever I have to go there. Joseph Anderson's story about finding Deepnest in his first playthrough perfectly captures the mystique of the location and if you watch the SGDQ True Ending speedrun by Vysuals this year, it was the one area he had to mute when first running the game because he hates bugs and it made him super upset.
I feel the same. I liked how different Deepnest was from every other area, in a sinister way. I knew that every infected bug would be after me in every zone, but the Deepnest residents had me actually paranoid about that. It made me twice as earnest to explore just to see what disturbing things I could find (helps that the area is really big). The buildup of Nosk was the only thing about the game that made me truly anxious too. So that zone and City of Tears were easily the most immersive to me. No other place keeps you on edge like Deepnest, and the City is the most somberly beautiful. Dang, I want to play the game again now Having to fight Stalking Devouts without the shadow dash though? Fuckkk no lol
To me I hate deepnest. I dread every time I have to go there since I hate the atmosphere and enemies but to give it credit. It is very well made. There is no time to stay still and take time and I hate that I love the design of the area
@@breanna1959 Honestly, the Nosk leadup was the best one of the best non fight moments for me in the whole game. I misinterpreted it and though it was a huge lore moment. I was so confused and had a mixture of emotions. The Nosk reveal was honestly a bucket of cold water for me.

I remember my first time in crystal peak. I was destroyed every turn I made, and I was too worried I would die, to, well, die. I found a bench and I sat down to never turn back. I honestly never found the map somehow so I went through the whole thing blind. Honestly felt isolated which was fun to play in that environment
Despite Dirtmouth literally just being a bench and a market, I still find myself returning to it at the end of every session, the same way you return home after a long day of work. I can just sit on the bench, reflect on my charms, look at the map, say hi to everyone there, and then log off. It just hits different ending a session in the one friendly area in a world of hostility.
There’s actually a really short route you can take. But quick advice: DO NOT REST AT A BENCH. Getting rid of all the enemies before you get the flower will make things so much easier. Soul charms will help with healing. I went through the Crossroads, then fog canyon, then I climbed into the Queen’s Garden. The spikes got me but without the enemies that’s the only threat! :3

Both the Hive and Fungal Wastes are probably the most memorable areas because they have interesting enemies and really worthwhile rewards. Also, I definitely prefer Greenpath to the insanity that is Queen's Garden to the point where the two areas feel almost redundant to one another
Dirtmouth is NOT a bad area. It is meant to feel a bit, well, boring. It is a lone town that you start in and re visit from times. It has nice encounters with NPCS and stuff. It does its job perfectly.
Considering that I'm still going through the game and inevitably rage quitting every 15 minutes, I enjoyed this way too much and that outro? Perfect. Keep it up. I enjoyed every bit of it.

Personally of all the areas in Hallownest, I found the Queen’s Gardens to be the most enjoyable. I suppose the platforming must have been a challenge for others but I found it quite fun, I of course still got smacked by the resident Mantises but the music made up for any suffering endured. Similar to Greenpath, good music, nice colourful vibes and it wasn’t as depressed as the Crossroads.
I also put in first place-you should be able to find my comment with my entire ranking easily if you look at the most recent comments, if that interests you. However, I love the Crossroads, I never understood why people think it looks depressing.
I like the disguisting areas like fungal wastes and the waterways as they are weird and give Hallow nest an unfamiliar but memorable feeling. However I hate the ancient basin as it is more rocks and nothing else(if I am not basing the list on story)
The most interesting part about the white palace is that despite the difficulty it doesn't feel frustrating, nor unfair. The peaceful soundtrack makes a big role in this chilling challenge.
I love Dirtmouth for the beautiful music. It's so peaceful and inviting that I spend more time sitting on the bench and just listing to the music than I should. My least favorite is Crystal Peak. It. Fucking. Sucks. Yeah, it's pretty but the stupid flipping platforms and the fact I go face first into the pointy crystals at every chance. The flying enemies that fling pointy rocks at you and the laser shooting bugs can eat a dick. I'm not going back in there. (until my 112% run, God help me)
Even if dirtmouth is just for shopping, I like how you can add more people to it, and it's also where the Grimm troupe is. Royal waterways should be last if anything. The only thing there that's cool is dung defender and godhomd, and both of those have access to city of tears. It's almost like you're not meant to go into the waterways for a long period of time.
Heh fun fact, driving yourself up the wall by mantis claw jumps on the right top wall and using passive charms is also a method of beating the traitor lord.
Everyone over hear talkin about how much the Primal Aspids suck, but everyone’s forgetting the Crystal Hunters. Just as annoying to hit, and if they miss and hit the platform, then congratulations! Now that’s going to hurt you, possibly even knock you off the platform.
Deepnest is my favourite because of the atmosphere and experience I had in it, without any warning getting plunged deep into a dark dangerous cavern that’s unforgiving and having to climb your way all the way back out was nothing short of amazing, the only problem I had with it was that there was no spider boss at the end of the it, after all that lead up it felt a little anticlimactic
For me if I did a ranked from worst to best ( for my personal opinion since everyone has one ) I would make greenpath number one. Just the struggle of being a new player playing greenpath when I started was amazing, the struggle of trying to kill the explosive enemy’s and trying to dodge the flys was amazing with the green colors. Of course being more experienced it’s sorta boring now, but so is every other place on the map as you already know it, sure it is easy now but when I was newer it gave me a sense of what the game will be like and the one place I kept coming back too even if I didn’t need too. It let me learn how to play the game at my own pace, with more places to explore than forgotten crossroads.
My personal list would probably be something like this: Royal Waterways-15 Resting Grounds-14 Fog Canyon-13 Hive-12 Howling cliffs-11 Dirthmouth-10 Deepnest-9 Kingdom's Edge-8 Crystal Peak-7 Forgotten Crossroads-6 Fungal wastes (Only because of the Mantis village)-5 Greenpath-4 Queen's Garden-3 Ancient Basin/Abyss-2 City of Tears-1 Mainly down to aesthetic, music, and level design. Places like Fog Canyon, Crystal Peak, and the Hive have some good aesthetic I just forget they even exist every new playthrough until I need an upgrade or something.

I don't know why but even though there was no reason to return to Dirtmouth after doing everything I'd always go back. whenever I completed a quest or killed a boss I'd always return like going home, which is honestly the best way to describe it, home. definitely my 2nd favourite after city of tears.
I went to Crystal Peak before getting the Lumafly Lantern because when I got the dive my first thought was "Hey wasn't there a breakable platform in the Forgotten Crossroads?" and I spent more time looking at guides on how to get out of there than I would like to admit, it's been my least favorite area since I have also been to the Ancient Basin because it's the only area with a tram close to the Stag Station so much that the fact that it still isn't may favorite area surprises me (the best area is Fungal Wastes change my mind)

I beat the flower quest on my second attempt dying the first time to the thorns in the queen's gardens in the same room as my destination.

Those thorns got me multiple times. I had more trouble with that flower quest than the path of pain lol

I like the disguisting areas like fungal wastes and the waterways as they are weird and give Hallow nest an unfamiliar but memorable feeling. However I hate the ancient basin as it is more rocks and nothing else(if I am not basing the list on story)
The most interesting part about the white palace is that despite the difficulty it doesn't feel frustrating, nor unfair. The peaceful soundtrack makes a big role in this chilling challenge.

I love Dirtmouth for the beautiful music. It's so peaceful and inviting that I spend more time sitting on the bench and just listing to the music than I should.
My least favorite is Crystal Peak.
It. Fucking. Sucks.
Yeah, it's pretty but the stupid flipping platforms and the fact I go face first into the pointy crystals at every chance. The flying enemies that fling pointy rocks at you and the laser shooting bugs can eat a dick. I'm not going back in there. (until my 112% run, God help me)
Even if dirtmouth is just for shopping, I like how you can add more people to it, and it's also where the Grimm troupe is.
Royal waterways should be last if anything. The only thing there that's cool is dung defender and godhomd, and both of those have access to city of tears. It's almost like you're not meant to go into the waterways for a long period of time.

Everyone over hear talkin about how much the Primal Aspids suck, but everyone’s forgetting the Crystal Hunters. Just as annoying to hit, and if they miss and hit the platform, then congratulations! Now that’s going to hurt you, possibly even knock you off the platform.
Greenpath definitely has the best audio
Deepnest is my favourite because of the atmosphere and experience I had in it, without any warning getting plunged deep into a dark dangerous cavern that’s unforgiving and having to climb your way all the way back out was nothing short of amazing, the only problem I had with it was that there was no spider boss at the end of the it, after all that lead up it felt a little anticlimactic

For me if I did a ranked from worst to best ( for my personal opinion since everyone has one ) I would make greenpath number one. Just the struggle of being a new player playing greenpath when I started was amazing, the struggle of trying to kill the explosive enemy’s and trying to dodge the flys was amazing with the green colors. Of course being more experienced it’s sorta boring now, but so is every other place on the map as you already know it, sure it is easy now but when I was newer it gave me a sense of what the game will be like and the one place I kept coming back too even if I didn’t need too. It let me learn how to play the game at my own pace, with more places to explore than forgotten crossroads.

Mainly down to aesthetic, music, and level design. Places like Fog Canyon, Crystal Peak, and the Hive have some good aesthetic I just forget they even exist every new playthrough until I need an upgrade or something.

I don't know why but even though there was no reason to return to Dirtmouth after doing everything I'd always go back. whenever I completed a quest or killed a boss I'd always return like going home, which is honestly the best way to describe it, home. definitely my 2nd favourite after city of tears.
Fun fact: path of pain was the cause of a broken controller and a dent in the wall

I went to Crystal Peak before getting the Lumafly Lantern because when I got the dive my first thought was "Hey wasn't there a breakable platform in the Forgotten Crossroads?" and I spent more time looking at guides on how to get out of there than I would like to admit, it's been my least favorite area since
I have also been to the Ancient Basin because it's the only area with a tram close to the Stag Station so much that the fact that it still isn't may favorite area surprises me (the best area is Fungal Wastes change my mind)
That rhyme in the beginning was pure genius.
