He didn't :( BUT it says a lot about how good the product is if he still considers it effective even if he didn't use it correctly and it still be better than the others :D
Well it did demonstrate the issue with how you're supposed to use it. Once the ice cream gets low, it's hard to use it as designed. I own it (wedding gift) and for the first few scoops from a container it's amazing! As it gets lower, you have to use it a little more traditionally and it's not much better than the 2nd most expensive.
It seems the 35 dollar scoop was at a disadvantage based on your scooping technique. I understand you want to get a good shot for the camera but it looks to be designed so you thrust it in from above using your entire arm's force and then scoop the ice cream out of a container that is stable and flat on the table. I'd like to see another with the antifreeze liquid filled, heated, and don't do the scooping in the same order as before. I’m a 71+ year old woman and I have to tell you that I have your lowest rated opener (mine is two-tone lime green) and I can open really, really tight soda bottle caps with mine. I just move my hand up to where the lid fits and it works. Also, I have a small hand and some openers are just too wide. Only once did I have to ask my hubby to open a pop bottle - and even he couldn’t - so he went for the channel locks - worked like a charm. I need to remember that when he’s not around. And since I’ve become so wordy I will also say that I can open almost anything if I just give the top a couple whacks in the floor or counter - breaks the seal and all is well. I just discovered your reviews and I love them - you do a super job! Thanks.
I had, key word Had, that Farberware one a few years back, it's a p.o.s to be 100% honest. The quick release never released and jammed up every time. Love the videos James! Go KNIGHTS!
I'm the sort of person that doesn't mind investing a little in a product that'll last me a long time. That $35 one looks like one solid piece and performed noticeably faster and easier than the kitchen aid. Not only that it did seem to sit in your hand better. It's obvious you don't need to use hot water with it or any other sort of trick and it even kinda seems like the sort of thing you'd eventually pass down, almost like a good set of cast iron skillets. It may seem silly to think such things, yet I'm sure we've all had some little thing passed down to us from relatives that's been kept around simply because it works super well. I've never liked the idea of electric scoops, having to warm the scoop, etc or having to wait for my ice cream to soften and I'm more than happy to spend $35 once on an item that'll last a lifetime if it works as well as it did here and is as solidly made as it appears to be. So many items these days seem to be cheaply made trash that you replace every couple of years at most or you just end up suffering through them having worn down and work less well, that $35 scoop does not seem to be one of those.
When IKEA first opened in the US back in the early 1980s, I bought a $1 ice cream scoop from them. It's the kind with the antifreeze in the handle that transfers heat from your hand to the bowl of the spoon section. Best $1 I ever spent. Still using it. Running it under some warm water to give it a head start helps.
My first job was also working at an ice cream shop! I ended up marrying a guy who scoops ice cream with a spoon and it drives me crazy! I know it sounds nuts, but scooped ice cream just tastes better! Oh, I have your $35 scoop beat! I have the Pampered Chef scoop and it is the absolute best! It's got liquid in the handle which heats up the scoop to melt the ice cream as you scoop it. The best ice cream scoop you'll ever own. I've seen knock offs but none of them are as good as the one from PC. I can't remember how much I paid for it but I'm pretty sure it was more than $35. Everything from there is very pricey (but it's worth it) I've had that ice cream scoop for over 15 years, still works like new.
I'd always used a spoon to scoop my ice cream, until I moved in with my husband. I'll say I do enjoy using a scoop. It's less labor intensive and my spoons aren't constantly getting bent. But I feel like the scoop compacts the ice cream so much that more looks like less. I go through the container way faster now. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. 😋
You used the 35$ one wrong... it explicitly said, that you need to Push it in to the ice cream. Use large muscles, save wrist. Not "pull" like you did. That's why it has the narrow tip in the front etc.
I have an all aluminum scoop that came with my shake maker years ago. It’s very similar to the KitchenAid one. Fat handle, easy grip, one piece casting. I always warm mine up cuts like butter!
I LOVE my KitchenAid can opener. They’re a company that really knows how to make kitchen gadgets and appliances. There’s a reason everyone’s mom owns a KitchenAid stand mixer.
I have an earlier version of the kitchen aid scoop. We’ve had ours for about 7 years. I noticed a few years ago the scoop started getting pock marks or bumps in the scoop metal. It is a great scooper but I’ve been planning on getting a new scoop, so great time for this video to come out!
So happy to see this review! Excellent! I’d love to see you review old timey gadgets, too. Hit up eBay or thrift stores to explore old gadgets no longer in production.
There's a local ice cream chain where I live that sells their own, signature ice cream scoop for about $20. It's dense and sturdy like that $35 scoop, but the handle has a hollow core that's filled with a gel. Maybe it's the gel that makes it an incredibly smooth scoop!
I've had this happen with several cheap ice cream scoops, either right after purchase or several months down the line. They use cheap 'pot metal' shafts, and it fatigues easily, and eventually just snaps. I switched to the slightly more expensive ($10-12) scoops, and never had the problem again.
the scoops shaped like the dollar store and the kitchenaid scoops are meant to scoop on the side of the scoop not the front. the second scoop should also be from the side the bar is on that pushes it out. you should run them under water and dip regularly for easy scooping. you should know these things having worked at an ice cream place. my dad was a soda jerk in the 50's, he taught me how to scoop ice cream.
Great review. Was wondering if you could do a follow up on how the finish holds up. Never had any finish last long on one. Maybe let us know when you do the other scoop video
I have a similar ice cream scooper to the kitchen aid one except the metal isn’t shiny. I dip the scooper in some water and it glides right through the ice cream like butter.
While still a decent brand. They’ve gone way way down hill over the past decade. They have some great stuff but a lot of it is just meh now. And they have some absolute stinkers. This isn’t the kitchen aid my grandma use to use.
They're all being made in China now, same with Farberware. Almost everything is made in China now and the quality, or rather lack thereof, has suffered greatly.
The two with the lever action sweepers, are dishers, not ice cream scoops. They’re designed for things like mashed potatoes, or thick puddings and stuff that’s already soft. Not frozen ice cream. Why people insist on using them for ice cream scoops is beyond me.
I have a KitchenAid ice cream scoop and has always been my favorite. Definitely works really well. I've also had a faberware one that the release mechanism broke in just a couple uses.
Whatever icecream shop this guy worked at did not teach him how to scoop icecream. You're supposed to scoop thin layers and let the scoop roll it into a ball, not take chunks out at a time. He's digging like he's about to bury his dead hamster
Most "professional scoopers" I see use scoops similar to your top 3, but they all grab thin slivers of ice cream and use the scoop to form it into a ball, not do the at home get as much as you can in one pass way. As a self proclaimed professional scooper, you should have made an attempt to do it the right way (yes it's harder with a small bucket of ice cream than the 5 or 10 gallon buckets...)
I got one like they use in most ice cream shops at a restaurant supply. No plastic handle or seams and if you warm it under hot water it works just like they do in shops where they do the same thing.
I have this rare icecream scoop that works like a dream. It like a clamp that you hold tight, scoop that got a sharp but blunt edge, you scoop and when your done you pull the to handles apart. Its dope!
I have one I bought at a grocery store about 10 years ago that works well because it's pointed on the end so enters the ice cream pretty easily. Think it was in the "good cooks" line but could be mistaken.
Although excessive, I think you should have one whole thing of ice cream for each scoop and take them out of the freezer one by one for each test. Ice cream melts fast, and it gets softer by the second.
Desert spoon every time, I bought a scoop once and used it once, since then only ever leaves the drawer when I clean the drawer. Must remember to throw it out next time I clean the drawer.
Had the Farberware scoop. Lasted three scoopings. Plastic broke on the easy release thing, even the metal bar came out, and the scoop head was about to break off too.
I've tried all the different styles. The ones with the steel wiper were worn out long before the the lever ejector style which you did not review. I saw you using your finger to get the ice cream off the spoon style scoop which is why I don't use them. The hemispherical lever scoops produce a nice round scoop suitable for cones and a pleasing uniform appearance in a dish. A bowl of hot water does help but there are extra steps (heat the water, dip the scoop, clean the container).
I have old scoop that has some sort of gel in the handle that is supposed to transfer heat from your hand to the ice cream. No flexibility in the handle at all. BUT, after many runs through the dishwasher, the outside gets a coating on it that comes onto the ice cream. I can wipe it with a paper towel, and towel comes off dirty gray. How does the Kitchen Aid or the Amazon scoop stand up to repeated dishwasher trips?
My family has always used a zeroll 1012 with the warming oil inside. (often called antifreeze) They have been used for literal decades since my great great grandmother's diner. They last through everything and have been dropped, beat up, hammered, and washed half a billion times. We have two and the size 12 is our favorite and a quick shake to get your body heat to the oil quickly lets you scoop hard ice cream and sinks into it like clay.
I have a Faberware one but it has a push mechanism inside that pushes out the ice cream better from the scoop. It's probably not the basic model though that you had during your test and can't remember where I purchased it and for how much (it was many years ago). That being said, I never really use the scoop since I never eat ice cream myself, but it's there if I ever buy ice cream for any guests. I do leave the ice cream out on the counter for at least 5 minutes though to allow it to soften just enough for easier scooping. Now I feel like going out and buying ice cream... go figure lol :D Love your vids!
we got a filled scoop for my parents cafe yrs ago and I went use anything else. they have liquid either water or antifreze type agent in a cast aluminum body with a plug at the bottom. mine has no name on it anymore. but I have seen the same type sold other places. I have severe arthritis and it still is no problem my 10 yr has cerebral palsy and can use it as well. please try those.
I ended up looking for ice cream scoops a couple months ago. Ended up getting a gas coolant self-release scoop for $10AUD ($7USD), and it's the best scoop we've ever used. Easy to scoop, easy to create ice cream balls, and self-releases.
My fam and I use a generic scooper we got at a restaurant supply store (Cash n Carry), and it does the job pretty well. We'll use a spoon in a pinch though.
I have an ice cream scoop that's pretty basic but it has "ice cream melting liquid" in it. I would like to know whether or not the liquid works or if it's just a gimmick
3:22... Oh no, not Blue Bunny, that's one of the easiest ice creams to get into, it is a very soft ice cream compared to some other brands (don't get me wrong it is delicious, but definitely wouldn't be putting the scoops through any real trials compared to ice creams made with a higher "water" to milk ratio and not near as creamy, aka more of an ICEcream than an icecream or iceCREAM).
Should have done reverse order for second test because the ice cream melts.
I filmed a third round, which I didn't include here for the sake of time, going in reverse order. The results didn't change.

Why use a towel, when you can flip over the lid and hold it on the bottom (bonus: more sturdy when setting it next to you on the bed.....er...couch).
Cup of hot water is key here. Even a spoon will do after that.
Ditto! I have 2 vintage PC scoops with the antifreeze in the handle that are going strong after many uses!
I don’t need an ice cream scoop when I just eat a whole tub in one sitting.
Maybe i'm just cheap but a spoon works just fine to me. Already have one and functions as a scoop.
Barbarian! 😲
😂
Your "professional" scooping technique could use some work.
I was waiting for this comment. Congratulations!
😂😂😂
Your sense of humor needs alot of work
The Judge there’s a wiener in every comment section, even with a chill dude comparing ice cream scoops. Never change, TH-cam!
@@GeddyRC Yeah but he's still right...
Well of course the last ones were better, the ice cream got softer towards the end, next time start the expensive ones first
You used the 35$ one wrong... it explicitly said, that you need to Push it in to the ice cream. Use large muscles, save wrist. Not "pull" like you did. That's why it has the narrow tip in the front etc.
I take the path of least resistance. Put the tub of ice cream in the microwave for 30 seconds & it comes out the perfect consistency for scooping.
I think the $35 one would be a great wedding present, partly because of the packaging.
Try out the Cutco $49 ice cream scoop. It glides with no trouble without having to heat it up or any other trick.
The whole time I was thinking...EAT THE ICE CREAM!
wow ucr really crafts amazing youtubers, both you & Remi Ashton are my favs
I'm 39, and I just bought my first ice cream scoop for my little girl. Of course she ignored it and grabbed a spoon.
😂 typical
I have an earlier version of the kitchen aid scoop. We’ve had ours for about 7 years. I noticed a few years ago the scoop started getting pock marks or bumps in the scoop metal. It is a great scooper but I’ve been planning on getting a new scoop, so great time for this video to come out!
Ive has the farberware one before and watching this is horrible flashbacks lol hard to scoop and that quick release thing in the scoop broken off.
So happy to see this review! Excellent!
I’d love to see you review old timey gadgets, too. Hit up eBay or thrift stores to explore old gadgets no longer in production.
Try and do a shot of beer every time he says "scoop." XD Great video!
My husband and I have a Kitchen Aid Ice Scoop and we love it. It always scoops out the ice cream without having to let it soften.
Tell me you didn't waste all that gorgeous ice cream!!!
There's a local ice cream chain where I live that sells their own, signature ice cream scoop for about $20. It's dense and sturdy like that $35 scoop, but the handle has a hollow core that's filled with a gel. Maybe it's the gel that makes it an incredibly smooth scoop!
Someone said IKEA sells one for $1 with antifreeze in the handle which sounds like this one
My dollar store scoop snapped in half first scoop.
Your scooping technique makes me question your claims of professional scooper, sir.
Great review. Was wondering if you could do a follow up on how the finish holds up. Never had any finish last long on one. Maybe let us know when you do the other scoop video
I just run a spoon under hot water.
I have a similar ice cream scooper to the kitchen aid one except the metal isn’t shiny. I dip the scooper in some water and it glides right through the ice cream like butter.
Kitchen Aid sounds like a good brand.
Kitchen Aid it the most expensive brand where I'm from, but it's the best.
Wow. Ice cream is expensive. Now the scoop is, too.
Love this series comparing different products!! Keep it up!! You should do pizza cutters!
Oi, Kane! I guess it was all downhill after C&C Generals?
I have a KitchenAid ice cream scoop and has always been my favorite. Definitely works really well. I've also had a faberware one that the release mechanism broke in just a couple uses.
I really want mint choc chip now 😥
Whatever icecream shop this guy worked at did not teach him how to scoop icecream. You're supposed to scoop thin layers and let the scoop roll it into a ball, not take chunks out at a time. He's digging like he's about to bury his dead hamster
Wow $35 for a icecream scoop not me, that's crazy! I love your reviews!
Most "professional scoopers" I see use scoops similar to your top 3, but they all grab thin slivers of ice cream and use the scoop to form it into a ball, not do the at home get as much as you can in one pass way. As a self proclaimed professional scooper, you should have made an attempt to do it the right way (yes it's harder with a small bucket of ice cream than the 5 or 10 gallon buckets...)
you're supposed to let the ice cream soften just a bit, for optimum flavor
Teresa Fuller this guy ice creams.
thats not true at all. its so old people can eat it easier and so old people can scoop it easier. he isnt even scooping it correctly lol
So excited to hear you're from Riverside! A great place to grow up :) great video!!
Kitchen Aid ice cream scooper $10.99
*strength not included*
I got one like they use in most ice cream shops at a restaurant supply. No plastic handle or seams and if you warm it under hot water it works just like they do in shops where they do the same thing.
*Sorry i lost the will to live, half way through* ...
I have this rare icecream scoop that works like a dream. It like a clamp that you hold tight, scoop that got a sharp but blunt edge, you scoop and when your done you pull the to handles apart. Its dope!
No one who can stand scoops sitting down!! 4:12 stop video and move on.
I have one I bought at a grocery store about 10 years ago that works well because it's pointed on the end so enters the ice cream pretty easily. Think it was in the "good cooks" line but could be mistaken.
35 bones for a scoop/sex toy combo....winner!
Lol
Great review😁
Would you do a review for solar chargers that fit in pockets or back packs😊
"I'm a professional"
*Proceeds to not dip the scoop in hot water like any normal person would*
Although excessive, I think you should have one whole thing of ice cream for each scoop and take them out of the freezer one by one for each test. Ice cream melts fast, and it gets softer by the second.
If you dip scoop in hot water first m8t you better off
He did mention that at the end.
**GRUNTING** SO SMOOOOTH
Anyone else just use a fork for hard ice cream
Who knew some people don’t know how to scoop ice scream....
It’s 12 am and I am watching a grown man talk to himself while scooping ice cream. This is living.
Desert spoon every time, I bought a scoop once and used it once, since then only ever leaves the drawer when I clean the drawer. Must remember to throw it out next time I clean the drawer.
You should have tested the 35 dollar one the way the box explained not using the wrist like all the other ones
7:32 saying so smooth whilst going gahh gahh!!!
When cypher said put me back into the matrix i never would have guessed he would be doing such awesome product reviews
I enjoy your reviews you have a great personality and many should watch you.
I have severe arthritis and it still is no problem my 10 yr has cerebral palsy and can use it as well. please try those.
what place did you work where you got to sit down while scooping ice cream?
I ended up looking for ice cream scoops a couple months ago. Ended up getting a gas coolant self-release scoop for $10AUD ($7USD), and it's the best scoop we've ever used.
Easy to scoop, easy to create ice cream balls, and self-releases.
Any reason you didn't use any of the anti-freeze style scoops? They're usually $5-6 and tend to work great in my experience.
Thumbs up for "Professional experience scoopin' ice cream!"
I personally have a serrated ice cream scoop and I love it. but if it ever needs replaces I guess I know what one I will try!
