so perfect timing for this video im in bangkok with a car drivers license, and felt worried id be in the wrong without getting a proper license THANK YOU KEN
Very informative video, thanks for sharing! Wow you had to do a medical checkup before getting a license congratulations on getting the license again! Looking forward to your road trip videos
A knowledgeable vlog for those who wish to obtain a licence in Thailand. Great of you, Ken to explain so precisely and the amount of money needed to aquire a motorbike licence. Thanks a bunch. Well done and congratulations, Ken. You have passed with flying colours and at last you have a valid licence to start your road trip. Looking forward to your roadtrip vlogs. Stay safe, ride carefully and take good care.
Chiang Mai seems to be the worst place in Thailand for constant police checkpoints. Don't ride a bike there without an international license as a farang.
Thanks for this info..very useful as I use to ride a motorbike and drive a car around Thailand with just buying the local insurance but without a Thai driving license.
Interesting how to see how it works in Chiang Mai. I got my licenses (car+motorbike) in Narathiwat, where everything is taken care of by the DLT itself. No practical classes like in CM but a few boring hours of listening to a guy explaining the traffic laws. In Thai. I didn't have all those costs either. No driving school fee and no address statement for 900 baht. I just used my work permit for proof of residence. Total for the bike came down to about 300 baht if I remember correctly. The car license was more expensive as I converted my international license and needed a statement from the embassy for about 30 euros.
I also got my motorbike and car license in Chiang Mai . Everything was done at the DLT . I didn’t have a motorbike license in the US so I had to take the driving test as well I now have a two year license , but renewing for 5 years this August
@@justinthaim8879 I have a yellow book and pink card . If not , just go to immigrations and get the letter from them . They should have all your information in the computer from your TM 30 . At the time I did not need to book online . However when I decided to renew from 2 to 5 years I went to Maehongson because I live in that province and it was so much faster as its way less crowded .
Really good vlog. Full of useful info for travellers spending time in Thailand backed up with your reasons why a license is essential. I really admired your glasses, they suit you very well. Happy roadtrip
Getting the Thai national license seems to be the logical approach in your case.... Especially if you like going off the beaten path, a bike is pretty much what you'll use... Places like Phillipines, Indonesia, Laos.... probably more...so I guess it's a bonus .... Stay safe , ride safely & happy exploring.
When you driving motorcycle in Thailand . Please take care yourself. Safety first. I am Thai. I known on the road of Thailand quite dangerous. I look forward to see you have a good and safe trip.
Thanks for sharing this vlog which is full of information about getting driving license. You covered all important things to know. Great job. It's very useful vlog.
Hei Ken, If you're a licensed driver for both motor bike and car back home then you don't need to do all those tests. Simply rock up with your health cert, 150 baht, the officer will make copies of the documents and take your photo. There's an eye distance check colour check etc.. was pretty straight forward.
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Congratulations Ken!!!! :-) Thanks so much for this super useful clip. I've been searching for the information for my husband who's gonna move to live in Thailand by the end of this year after his pension. Thanks a lot!
Please always be careful when riding or driving , more so on motorbikes..always stay careful and do not push beyond limits in any course of road ,avoid slippery road conditions ..do not attempt on rainy wet , muddy or roads full of stones or grassy terrain..
English language tip..... Drive a car or ride a bike. You do not drive a bike or ride a car. A car licence is called a driving licence, a motor bike/cycle licence is called a motor cycle licence. Is a bike licence the same as a car licence in Thailand? Thank you.
Congratulations for getting your Thai driving license and looking forward to your roadtrip! 👏👏👏 Very interesting tbat you can convert the license to the local license of any Southeast Asian countries. Just wonder whether I could do the same with my Malaysian driving license.
one thing i find very interesting is that it is a legal requirement for everyone doing the tests or things like the reaction tests to do them IN PERSON at the DLT.
Absolutely fantastic vlog Ken! Thank you, I now know what to do to get mine 👌 Question please ~ does the school teach you to ride or is it you come already knowing how to ride?
here in the Philippines it is kinda hard to take a driving license & expensive as well .... you must attended 15hrs of theoretical driving lessons from any accredited driving school basic requirements additional requirements & we have 3 different kind of license here the student permit, non pro & pro for student permit w/c was only valid for one year can cost around between $20- $100 .... i don't know about the non pro & pro procedures & costs aaaaannndd that's why i never learned how to drive 😹💨💨💨
The special about our malaysian license...we are allowed to drive in thailand and the insurance also covered with our license....same goes to thai license if they drive here in malaysia...malaysia and thai have some sort of agreement for driving between countries...
Hi Ken, congratulation on getting the bike Thai Driving Licence. I have just follow up on your video, it's informative and fun to watch. Btw, what's your plan on the big road trip? where about? FYI, another TH-cam Paddy Doyle is currently on a bike road trip throughout 77 thai provinces. Are you planning to do the same? Stay healthy & stay safe. Cheers!!!
You probably should have paid for 4 more years 105b x 4. Otherwise you go back next year and have to renew. I renewed my car license a year and a half ago and just paid for 5 years in one go. If you use it in other countries then might be worth having more than a year? Just a thought. Meant to add: very detailed video!
The 1st licence is 'Temporary' and valid now for 2 years. The 5 year licence can then be applied for, but only if you are on a 1 year visa (eg. non immigrant visa) - those on tourist visas (even Elite visas) can only apply for Temporary licences. The 5 year licence expires on your birthday, so, if applied for just past your birthday it can be valid for nearly 6 years at no extra cost.
Just to others who have international drivers license, you can convert that to Thai drivers license also 😆 you don’t need to do any class😅. Also the thing is you need that thai drivers license only in the north until you outside of chiang mai. The rest no check point 😅.
Yeah the north is cool (pun intended), is that the tea plantation with the adobe bungalows close to a hill with tea bushes? Your from Lower Saxony I presume, your last name seems to have a Dutch origin.
Wow..I didn't know is easy to get license in Thailand..But in Malaysia you cannot apply for Malaysia driving license here if you just travel without working here @ study here @ living here for permanently @ got permanent visa @ married to local people..You need to apply in Driving School ..attend for course class for 1 day , computer test @ e.service & class lesson for 16 hours & driving test ..If you pass you can get your license @ if you fail to repeat again until you pass..
First I’m surprise about 500 baht registration fee 😅. I never had these registration fee to the school I went before. Second you’re a foreigner you will never fail to the class or even the driving test, you pay for it. They will never told you to come back after 3 days. It’s just what they said but you will do it even 10x until you can. 900 baht fee for residence certificate 😅 its FREE. unless you want it to be rush then that’s the fee. ONLY one thing you need to remember “NEVER HIT ANYONE” that’s only you need to know in the road in thailand haha. But it helpful to others who doesn’t know what’s the process 😅
Hi Ken, great informative video. I was wondering if you have heard of people using or have you used the Thai licence to hire scooters in other Asean countries without a IDP and without paying fines to police (driving legally)
Very good video thank you. If I take test and all is good. Am I able to convert the lisense for:- Cambodia? Vietnam? Laos? Or yes, how about India? Can it be converted for India. Excellent video, thank you.
We didn't get any chance to practice the written exam and only 1 try on the driving exam. So had to come back 3 days later after failing the straight line which is harder then you expect
I've never been asked for a driver's licence anytime I've rented a scooter (125-150cc) in Thailand. I was even in an accident in front of the police station in Pai and still they didn't ask for a licence==Good thing, wasn't even thinking about it. Damn I didn't have a helmet on either

It's so worth getting a licence I lost count how many times I had to pay the police tea money 😂😂
Hope you got it. Having a crash and going to hospital would be the end of all things because insurance won’t cover you. Stay safe
