Aegon's brother tried to burn him to death and his mother was going to hand him over to her girl crush to be executed. The writers were too stupid to realize this would make us like him. 🤷♀
The actor salvaged him all by himself.
He has saved the character since season 1.
He was excellent.
Aegon was the best. Otto was good but they wrote him out of most of the season. He was probably lucky about that. The secondary characters that worked were Larys, Simon Strong and the Tully kid.
That was one of the strangest developments, having Otto disappear for half of the season. He did a great job in those early scenes, particularly the one with Cole and Aegon when he was removed as Hand. Then we see him briefly again in the final montage, but in a cage for some reason, after having disappeared for half of the season. Ridiculous.

I completely believe that the writers did not intend for Aegon to be that nuanced, especially with the "burnt sausage" line.
I think their intention was to humiliate him, but it did not work.
They have very bad instincts on how things come across to the audience. They took the tell, but don't show route. Rhaenyra is right, so we don't have to do anything to support that, but as a result she came out looking bad. It's the flipside with Aegon, and the actor nailed it too.
Aegon was funny too in a humorless Season 2. Rhaenyra walked around looking constipated in all her scenes.

He was a light in an otherwise abysmal season

It wasn't by design they just stumbled into making Aegon liked. Tom Glynn Carney is a very good actor too, I think the way he played some of the scenes showed a humane side. If he had acted stoic during the council scene where Otto jumped in Aegon would've just looked stupid, but Tom made it look like he was genuinely trying to please the people.
True, I mentioned this in another comment but that was what the scene with Aegon letting Otto go was about too. They wanted to make him look stupid. But Otto misplayed him by degrading him so badly. We naturally have more sympathy for him since he lost his son, so we're on his side in that scene and understand why he wants revenge.
“Look how they massacred my boy”, applies to so many of my favourite ASOIAF characters now it’s getting ridiculous. Aegon is the goat, the drip king, the comeback king and they made my boy a grapist when it’s stated he was not faithful to his wife but he did have paramour, who was treated well by Aegon, it also comes from a much more reliable source and one who had watched Aegon grow up unlike Mushroom.
It all goes to Martin's complaint about writers of adaptations "making it their own." I don't understand how you could take on a project like this and instead of just adding scenes to enhance the story, you actually change the characters and their motivations.
I'm sure they're working hard to ruin Aegon for next season.
If the vibe doesn't change over there, they might finally come for him full force in S3😅
That would be my guess too. They were upset when fans liked Season 1 Daemon so they came for him in S2. After they see the reaction to Aegon, they'll be like "we'll fix that."
@vivekanamuye1805 they went full force on him from season 1 and he survived with Actor's performance. He is going to lost his sanity from this point that's why Aegon burned Rhaenyra alive. I hope they don't take away that iconic scene from him.
With the way they've been writing Rhaenyra I think they're going to do something drastic to alter that final scene between the two of them.
It was unintentional because they are bad writers, they intend to make us hate him by doing everything they could to make him disgusting only for them to come in the next season and have so much happened to him that we can’t help but feel sorry for him. they probably thought that we would cheer all these horrific things that what happened to him (like the blown up sausage)which proves how much of bad writer they are. While they try to force us to like Rhaenyra by showing so much bias it was obvious (Aegon hangs rat catchers, bad, but rhaenyra locks bastards in front the most hostile dragon to burn alive and eat while she watches in bliss , cool) but instead it had the opposite effect even those who once liked her -hate her now
I think they believed too that we would've completely given up on Aegon after he let Otto go. It's made out to be something stupid, yet Otto played him poorly there. Aegon just lost his son, was seeking revenge against Rhaenyra, and the great experienced Hand degrades Aegon when he's at his lowest. Meanwhile Larys, is in his ear giving him the sort of support that he needs. We are naturally also going to be drawn to a person who lost their child (which the writers are bizarrely oblivious to that emotional impact). This gives Aegon much more room for error and makes us sympathetic to his anger and pain. Otto misplaying him, Alicent ignoring and insulting him. Such poor writing that doesn't seem to grasp basic human emotions and reactions to trauma.
@reelworld1 I mean choosing criston cole in a short-term wasn't a bad idea. He achieved so much as a military man. Besides he is an inexperienced, traumatized young man. Of course he is going to make some bad decisions.
you expecting hollywood to make a patriarchy good in any way ? Any good character from the greens is by mistake, and the funniest part, aside from Daemon, the blacks have no interesting characters 😂
You know the drill. Once a male character becomes remotely liked by the audience, hotd do everything in their power to destroy them...whilst ironically doing NOTHING of note with their fave female characters.
