- It's easy to get overwhelmed when trying to learn how to start playing lead guitar, so many scales, patterns, boxes, etc. This is a short and easy lesson to get you started playing lead right away by visualizing 2 square shapes.

Probably the most simply yet effective lesson I've seen on TH-cam. I'm 71, teaching myself for three years, and this is actually making me sound okay.
Actually I'm usually embarrassed to let anyone know that I'm not more advanced on the guitar for my age 69, 70 in January. Ive always been more a strummer/singer but always wanted to learn lead and frills while singing and playing; it makes your singing sound so much more interesting.

Brian, I am 79 years old and have tried to understand how to make the blues sounds. I got that good feeling from the first video of yours that I saw. You are a great teacher. Thank you for your simplicity. The two greatest lessons of clarity for me came from your triangle and square and your drop back three for the major pentatonic scale. I don't have a musical ear so I have to do things mechanically. Thank you again for your time and effort. Playing the blues can bring a lot of happiness. Thank you again.

A minor pentatonic scale is the gateway drug for beginner guitarists, especially in the key of A minor lol

Your are the best guitar teacher I've found on TH-cam! After decades of fooling around with guitars, I'm finally starting to sound like more than just a simple chords player. Thanks for doing such a great job of taking things slowly and clearly explaining what these boxes represent and why they work so well with their related chords. Once a person realizes that the root of these boxes relates to the the pertinent chords, it's easy to see how boxes all over the neck can be used for various chord progressions. Thank you so much!!!!

All right . Thank you. I’m in my seventh decade and I mostly stay with acoustic bluegrass and country. Also mandolin . I’ve seen these patterns through all those decades but they never worked for me. Now I see some faith brewing.

This is a really natural teaching style, and a beautiful reminder that creative expression starts simply.
This is probably the best lesson I've ever seen for solo bedroom guitarists to convince their friends and family that they have reached virtuoso status. Sounds professional yet deceptively simple for someone progressing into their intermediate phase (with practice of course).

I have played Guitar for 50 years , but have learnt more from your short vidio than i have in my entire life. Love your teaching and you have one hell of a grate personality . For 40 years I've stuck to cowboy chords. Recently I've made some inroads on playing single notes but have scoured TH-cam looking for somebody that would give tips and tricks to tying together the fretboard. This is a fantastic example of that. Huge for me. Thank you!!

I've been playing and singing for 35yrs and know 100 songs and nobody has ever tought the con sept of lead I new the pentatonic scale but never new what to do with it you thought it in 10 minutes I can't believe for 35yrs you thought in 10 mins it's like no body wants you to know I can't thank you enought!!!!! Everything I do has been cords up tell now!!!
Make it work! Neil Young once said if I hit a wrong note I just slide up or down 'til it's right.
Brian does a great job of giving you something so basic but so cool. He really helps you connect it all together. As he says, the goal is to "make music," not just memorize patterns.
The simple blues always calls to you. @7:33 Just those notes everyone plays them their own way. Its beautiful. Each player has their own version of these same notes. Just hearing his little ditty in the beginning or his turnarounds, your ear says OH YA.

I have been playing guitar since about 12 years of age and I am now 54 years old and I totally understand this lesson but I sure wish someone could have taught it to me way back then the way you just did... you make it so much more understandable without complicating it for the beginner to average guitarist. You are a great teacher to say the least.

Brilliant explanation. Folks this is gold! He showed Am. Next, find Bm, then Cm, the Dm, etc. Just keep finding the root of the key on the E string like he showed you and practice.

A fantastic lesson, even for those of us that have been playing a while. I’ve been struggling with remembering all the shapes but this lesson just helped me simplify it back a bit and focus on playing, not remembering all the box shapes
SOME people are just instructors and believe they're teachers.

I really suck at lead. I'm good at picking, and strumming, but I see a 10 yr old kid tearing it up and I feel defeated before I start. So I'm going to basics and this is very timely.

More than 50 years playing here and I learn from you the best out of all the teachers on TH-cam. Sometimes it’s a matter of finding someone that speaks the way you hear I guess. I like this teacher above all others.
My daughter and I started playing just a couple of months ago. This has been the single most helpful video that we've found. 47 year olds have an advantage with hand strength and size, 10 year olds have much better memory. We're having fun driving mom and big brother nuts. Apparently, we play the same stuff over and over. They love making fun of our riffs vocally.

Quite an interesting lesson Brian. It's motivational, it's simple, and it's a confidence builder. Most of us, no matter how long we have been playing really need a confidence that helps us encourage ourselves that all that practice is paying off in progress. This is like when you have been on what seems like an endless quest to learn something and for what feels like an eternity where you don't see any noticable progress and then one day you pick up your strings and music effortlessly flies from your fingers. You haven't "arrived" but you've closed a chapter that opens the door for exciting new adventures.
So damn true! I just finally broke another barrier. Sure feels great.

You can’t underestimate the value of the advice in
this lesson. People tend to try to cram more complicated
information and knowledge into their learning from the
beginning, and in the end will make things a lot harder.
By learning something simple but musically pleasing
you start in motion what you would call the SNOWBALL
effect. The next thing you learn, perhaps a little more
difficult will come to you more easily, and this SNOWBALL
will grow and In a matter of months you will be
zooming ahead, whereas if you tried too much to soon
you will still be struggling, and I’m sure this point is not
lost on Brian

Brian, you have such a great talent for breaking things down to the most simple form. There's more value in this 12-minute video than many of the books that I have spent months learning from in the past. Having been a premium member for the last 3 years you have also taught me the ability to take something like this and build on it by moving the shapes into the Major Pentatonic (sliding everything down 3 frets) and finding the chords in other positions on the neck using the CAGED system. Been playing 23 years. This guy knows what he is talking about!!! Took me my first 3 years to learn that you write music in a key. A minor pentatonic is the perfect scale to learn first bc its relative major is C major pentatonic.

So you don't confuse anyone. C major= CDEFGABC scale.
Am =same notes, different start point. Still all white keys. ABCDEFGA scale. The intervals (spaces between notes) makes it sound sad. Particularly where B and C are (minor 2nd between them, think the Jaws theme. Psycho soundtrack has several and so does Carpenter's Halloween) and E and F.
Anyone dying to know, the Jaws theme is E....F...E...F (with the occasional low D in there)
When writing minor scales, they like lower case in college. So you'd write am.
They're big on Roman numerals and solfege if you're a singer (Do a Deer by Julie Andrews) and thinking about going to major in music.
City colleges has a lot for free or cheap. The have music majors.
Brian, as a 56 year old self taught professional entertainer of 51 years, I still look at development as I reach retirement. I must say, I really enjoyed this video, and you may find me as a regular. You teach things in such an easy way for people to learn.
