I've been ashamed, on and off, for being part of the Church of England for decades. Always optimistically thinking I can try and improve it at the local level at least. But how can I with this kind of stuff going on at the top? This is a new, shameful, embarrassing low.
Any organization that abuses children on this scale and doesn’t seem to take the right actions, would have been shutdown immediately if it was not religious.
How many judges and politicians do you think are involved in these cases? Not to talk about the actors, journalists, famous and rich people... @ritawing1064 Here's a more worrying question: if this is the state of the State Religion, with unelected, unaccountable bishops allowed to sit in Westminster and the Royal Firm (the Windsors) allowed to tweak Parliamentary bills to suit themselves, what does this say about 'British values'

@ After the Makin report Justin Welby admitted incompetence and really shaming failure had allowed Smyth to carry on abusing young men for a further five years, until his death in 2018. The Bible refers to those who lead the flock of God as shepherds, in those times men like Moses and David would protect their sheep from lions and bears sometimes risking their own lives in doing so. . Ezekiel 34 explains how God feels about negligent spiritual shepherds. The Makin review stated at least 10 Bishops and a further 30 rank and file clergy knew about Smyth’s abuses but failed to stop him. We shall see in the fullness of time how effective the former Archbishop of Canterbury’s safeguarding measures are working. Compassion and empathy need to be in evidence instead of protecting abusers and the reputation of the Church.
Outstanding Bishop of Newcastle. She is the only Bishop who I have felt is worthy of our trust on this criminal abuse and the failure of the seniors in the Church of England to act on it.
It's a full year early. He legally has to retire on his 70th birthday. In all the church abuse scandals, the best the victims ever get is that those involved retire early
Welby should not be able to choose his own retirement date. Epiphany at that. I gave up on the church as a young person, saw through the hypocrisy, but know that 6th Jan is an important date for Christians. Go today Welby. Don't look back, do not pass Go....Go Straight to Jail.
Which one ? Justin Welby was a junior priest when this was going on. I think that he was WRONG to resign over this. It is not his fault. He only joined the ministry as the lowest of the low in 1992 and was an ordinary parish priest till 1992 and then took on minor rolls at Coventry Cathedral for a number of years, He only became a bishop in 2011. He only became Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013 by which time Smyth had been in Southern Africa for 19 years and died in South Africa in 2018. Once Justin Welby was fully appraised of the facts, it was history. The Archbishop of Canterbury has many duties, a 60 hour a week job and going out into the street wearing sackcloth and ashes and ringing a bell as a leper was not going to help anyone. Bearing in mind their reputation for casual violence and permanent injury to their victims, the prospect of South African police taking action over this was virtually nil. Many of Smyth's victims would have preferred if Channel 4 (muck-raking for ratings) had kept out of it. At least Smyth did not irreparably mutilate the genitals of any of his victims, a vile and sexually perverted crime perpetrated upon defenceless babies and children with which many at Channel 4 are complicit. A translation of Jesus's words, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone". Unlike any of the defenceless babies and children subjected to mutilation, any of Smyth's boys could have said "NO !" ..... but they didn't. Any of those at Winchester school could have gone straight to the police or social services with what they knew, or upon an invitation by John Smyth to submit. Submission in all cases appears to have been voluntary and has hints of religious extremism including cleansing of the soul by self-mortification about it (trying to share the sufferings of Jesus) .... Certainly in his younger days Pope John Paul II did it. Voluntarily submitting to someone else beating you is not too different. Kathy goes on about Smyth's crimes in Zimbabwe. Why has Kathy not gone out to Zimbabwe and exposed the wickedness of the government and a police force which casually tortures and murders people and hammered and hammered on about THAT night after night, but NO ! She has picked on someone most unlikely to fight back. Unlike a pack of wolves dragging down a stag, there are those behind Kathy who have worked with psychopathic and sadistic intent for their own dark reasons to damage the Church of England and to drag down Justin Welby (a psychopathic exercise) The atheists have nothing to crow about. Consider the evil perpetrated within the atheist Soviet Union.
@@marksmale827are you trying to justify the church raping and molesting and abusing and beating and lying and conspiring and denying and covering up? Why would you minimise.....oh nevermind!
@@LisaBirgitHolst75 Lisa dear ! .... no-one is making any allegations of RAPE here and in any event, THE CHURCH didn't do it .... John Smyth did it. My experiences within the Church of England at Sunday School, as a member of the Church of England, and 40 years a church bellringer, I never came across so much as a HINT of anything like John Smyth. Throughout my teenage years, the Church gave me a haven from the Godless bullying thugs at school who made my time at school, and the school years of many others, a complete misery. No-one that I knew connected to the Church plastered the urban environment with graffiti, beat up anyone, demanded pocket money with menaces .... or stabbed little girls to death or let off bombs at pop concerts. Kathy Newman and those behind her at Channel 4, for their own dark reasons seated in an alien and very dark faith, are trying to do damage to the Church of England. Do you not think that those within the Church who were appraised of John Smyth's activities did not double down trying to prevent anything like it from happening again. Smyth escaped to Zimbabwe and out of the orbit of the Church of England. With regard to other churches within the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury is nothing more than the chairman of a very loose alliance. Smyth's activities in Zimbabwe pale into insignificance compared to the crimes of the Zimbabwe government .... even their use of rape of women and girls, men and boys to terrorise is bad enough but is of a lesser order compared to the torture and mass murder and burning of whole villages with people trapped in their homes particularly in the West of the country. Lawlessness in South Africa has resulted in flame throwers being fitted to cars to deal with robbers. There are many within the Labour Party including its' leader, Keir Starmer who approve of the most vile crimes being committed against defenceless babies and boys. There is no suggestion that Smyth irreparably mutilated the genitals of ANY of his acolytes .... and acolytes they were, who in their religious fervency appear to have voluntarily submitted to what in many religions is known as "mortification of the flesh". If the Labour Party were to be held liable for the vile crimes of many of its' prominent members it would disappear in a puff of smoke. If I had been invited by John Smyth to submit to the "mortification" of MY flesh for the good of my soul, I would have told him where to go. ANY of his acolytes especially in Britain could have gone to the police or social services BUT THEY DIDN'T ..... although Social Services in Britain is, of course, as we know from Rotherham, Telford, Rochdale etc. etc., a monstrous swamp of its' own. How many of the VICTIMS of the grooming gangs contracted sexually transmitted diseases including HIV ? Social Services are keeping quiet on that one aren't they and the victims appear to have been coerced into keeping quiet as well !
If you read the article in Private Eye , you'll see Welby admitted last week that his "incompetence" and " really ashaming behaviour" had allowed Smyth to carry on his abuse for another five years until his death in 2018.
The authorities see it as defending the institution. A friend of mine now deceased told me about the Abuse in the Church of England about 25 years ago and I remember saying to him they could not cover this up, but they did by moving clergy from one end of the country to another.
@@jondarbyshire-s7k This is what happens in the United States. Priests who molest children are moved around from one parish to another. There is no attempt to arrest these perverts or those who cover for them. The culture of silence, wanting to protect the institution, and collusion surrounding the abuse of children is truly frightening. Justice for the victims ❤️🩹❤️🩹
Smyth was no more monstrous than, say, those respectable members of our society who build weapons to injure and kill children in Gaza, Yemen and elsewhere. Yet there's no public outrage against those people.
Just imagine you are told that a man abused young men and boys in his care. You are in a position of power and authority within the organisation in which this person operated. What do you do when you know he has moved into a similar position over young men and boys somewhere else? You have 2 choices 1. Inform the police. 2. Do nothing. It seems the church feels justified in taking the second choice and penalises those who call that out.
Strange isn't it how an organisation which represents love and care for all seems only interested in caring for those perceived as important. When I understood this, two years ago as a regular churchgoer in an ancient parish, I took my leave and vowed never to return. I am glad I did, to avoid the catastrophe of being crushed in the debris of the collapsing institution

I am a Catholic but I am so surprised a married man and also a priest was guilty of this horrific abuse ? In Catholic circles you will often hear said, "Oh poor man why can't they allow them marry"?, as if being married would have prevented x or y to occur. Obviously it didn't in this case. 😢 😮

I don't care that much about the power & privilege as much as I care about the GROSS abuse of it! Power can be harnessed for good or for evil - in this case the letter was apparent for 40 years.
How right for the Bishop of Newcastle to recognise that the Church of England has "a culture that internalises entitlement". Such a profound and true statement... Respect to her for standing firm despite all the pressure. That is what is needed. Faith before frame and fame! The next Archbishop of Canterbury will need to get rid of that culture.
Sorry but the police were notified in 2013, what have they got to say for themselves? The public need to know has Welby taken the hit for the police in "not following up with them sufficiently"? And is anyone from 1984 going to be accountable for the national disgrace of allowing Smyth to go and continue abusing in other countries, or is it all going to be placed on the current bishops?
In this week's Private Eye it states that Cambridgeshire Police and Social services have no official record of receiving a complaint. Also Private Eye states how Welby admitted his failings in his interview in 2013 allowed the abuse to continue. So it makes you ask yourself who you believe
Vile creatures from the top to the bottom...they actually enabled a serious betrayal of young men...they should all be under serious criminal investigation..
Saw Justin Welby once at a 5* hotel in Cape Town. Cross tucked into his pocket while he enjoyed a luxury breakfast. Couldn’t help thinking he and his wife (why was she even there) could easily have stayed at a lower grade hotel and donated the rest to charity. But of course that would mean having to practice what he preached.
Mandatory reporting for all faith groups and organisations. End charitable status for churches that are involved in this sort of institutional cover up of abuse.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. Matthew 23:13" ❤🇬🇧❤
the real crime is that for a thousand years we have allowed them to deal with this in house enabling the cover up and systemic practise of victim blaming and silence, while in almost every archdioceses they have homes that these priests are sent to to rehabilitate as long as they are repentant. that they fund these places but have no idea that this happens at all or in what numbers, is a ridiculously untenable position they always turn to in defence. 'we had no idea - but we funded it anyway'
I totally agree the church need investigating but also the mosques, I find it strange that for years everyone knew what was going on but only now do something about it. Im not religous but I can see Islam is going to get even stronger because they have free range.
As a childhood trauma survivor I feel that people such as myself view the religious organisations as hypocrites...how can we attend church and sit there listening to individuals that have so much arrogance.
When donwe start protecting people over institutions? Senior officials in the church knew about the abuse!!!!!!!!! Time to start applying criminal penalties or the church is stripped of its tax exemption
This lady should be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Apart from any other consideration, she must be one of the few in the higher ranks of the church who is wholly untainted by this scandal.
All those criminal senior clergy who deliberately perverted the course of justice by covering up Smyth's sexual sadistic attacks on youngsters must now all be charged and incarcerated in prison for a minimum 20 years each with the COE having to pay compensation to the victims and their families. (The COE are the second largest property owners in the country, so they can easily afford to pay a minimum of £10 million to each victim and / or family members)
Why is it that these monsters die before there called out, it's disgusting, and the one's who turn a blind eye to everything, shameful bastards one and all
Why haven't the Police been all-over this like a rash , is this another situation where the Justice System in England has let the public down & been found wanting
Organisations should ALWAYS report to police on ANY suspicion regarding children not being safe. Internal investigations can be always be performed afterwards. In my country, anyone working in an organisation that in any way deals with children are mandated by law to report to police and child protection services on ANY suspicion regarding children. So, the individual employee is required by law to report, not internally within the organisation, but directly to police and child welfare

All abusers of children should be punished, it is a shame that Channel 4's enthusiasm for punishment doesn't seem to extend to the grooming gangs from a certain community. Indeed, the phrase 'deafening silence' would seem to be their attitude. Odd that.
Well done, Cathy Newman and Channel 4. Don't go after people like Jordan Peterson, who tries to do the right thing, but go after bad people like this, who present themselves as godly but are woke, dishonest, and self-serving behind the scenes.
Maybe those who kept quiet all this time, were also guilty of the same abuse. When I hear the word Catholic, I think of an institution that predators flock to to sexually abuse children. 😢
The bishops are selected to be 'company men and women' who won't rock the boat or spill the beans but instead close ranks and not spill any beans. It's the lack of character and calibre that is so worrying: weak people who cannot bring themselves to tell the truth and others who are simply interested in their own careers. We have managers and hirelings rather than leaders and shepherds. A root and branch revision is required and the laity are best placed to carry it out. Parliament should take up its role and instigate this.

The 'Royals' have always greeted Wellby warmly. Just like Peter Ball
@alexdart4064 indeed, Peter Ball received warm support from the Windsors. Probably why we don't hear so much about that case.

Cathy, you have a nack of asking in your face questions. Bravo.
Thank you for a comprehensive and penetrating report. The Bishop of Newcastle is a courageous woman and the Church of England needs more like her.

In all the church abuse scandals, the best the victims ever get is that those involved retire early
With a full pension and all...
after Bishop Peter Ball ‘resigned’ prior to his subsequent prosecution, he was gifted a residency in a lodge on the Duchy of Cornwall’s estate
I could not fathom that when he was given that residence. It is incomprehensible but for some reason it doesn't surprise me. How crazy is it.
Welby should not be able to choose his own retirement date.
Epiphany at that.
I gave up on the church as a young person, saw through the hypocrisy, but know that 6th Jan is an important date for Christians.
Go today Welby. Don't look back, do not pass Go....Go Straight to Jail.
looks like the former Arch Bishop of Cantab is guilty - he didn't act to prevent this.
Unlike a pack of wolves dragging down a stag, there are those behind Kathy who have worked with psychopathic and sadistic intent for their own dark reasons to damage the Church of England and to drag down Justin Welby (a psychopathic exercise)
The atheists have nothing to crow about. Consider the evil perpetrated within the atheist Soviet Union.
The press has gone a bit overboard about this.
If you read the article in Private Eye , you'll see Welby admitted last week that his "incompetence" and " really ashaming behaviour" had allowed Smyth to carry on his abuse for another five years until his death in 2018.
why is there such a conspiracy of silence when faced with such a monster?
Because the Church isn’t Christian. It’s a power base.
The authorities see it as defending the institution. A friend of mine now deceased told me about the Abuse in the Church of England about 25 years ago and I remember saying to him they could not cover this up, but they did by moving clergy from one end of the country to another.

He is not the only one, thats why.
The fact that she is reporting from a palace , is saying everything.
