The notion that the religious, or their organizations have any sort of immunity is delusional. Prosecute and sue. The Church is not in denial...it's a criminal coverup.

    • @WhichDoctor1

its sadly not delusional for them to expect immunity. It's been very much the reality for centuries. So quite reasonable for them to expect it to continue. Maybe that might change, i wouldn't hold your breath about the change being meaningful, though. Most likely a public slap on the wrist and then quietly back to the status quo. Just like keeps happening with the met police

A statutory requirement here in South Africa - any person in a position of trust who suspects the abuse of a child and fails to report it, commits a criminal offence. Welby failed to ensure his hierarchy in SA complied with our law, and while rabbiting on about reparations relating to slaves from hundreds of years ago, has not had the shame or guts to speak out for the living victims of his ministry. He and his ilk are lower than a snake's belly.

They are talking about things that allegedly happened in 1982, meaning 42 years ago. Frankly, this is ridiculous. By that time most parents used to beat their children and this was considered acceptable. Obviously now it's not, and I believe it's a change for good. But this happened then, not now. I remember my parents used to beat us with leather belts. They were good parents but me and my elder brother were driving them crazy. Once I remember we stole their fire guns by forcing a drawer lock with knives. When dad arrived we were shooting at bottles on the roof of the house with two guns and a rifle.

Samething in the Roman Catholic Church at Primary School in the forties and fifties. In my old age now, one can never forget. The Nuns using their belts made up of white chords, which had three knots on them; each called FAITH, HOPE, and CHARITY to thrash one with... add the splintered wood cane to thrash you with. I have seen and had likemany others, experienced these brusing and cuts that came with it....I still wonder about the 8 year old girl ( I was the same age) witnessing a massive assault on that poor girl in front of the class Even at the age of 8, I knew it to be wrong. Admittedly, this all happened in 1948. However , that massive assault still lingers in my mind today. Except for the Bishop of Newcastle, who appears to be the only Christian, doing what is right that the CofE has. Welby and his cohort of Bishops should be ashamed of themselves ....and retire....completely, out of touch.

@ After the Makin report Justin Welby admitted incompetence and really shaming failure had allowed Smyth to carry on abusing young men for a further five years, until his death in 2018. The Bible refers to those who lead the flock of God as shepherds, in those times men like Moses and David would protect their sheep from lions and bears sometimes risking their own lives in doing so. . Ezekiel 34 explains how God feels about negligent spiritual shepherds. The Makin review stated at least 10 Bishops and a further 30 rank and file clergy knew about Smyth’s abuses but failed to stop him. We shall see in the fullness of time how effective the former Archbishop of Canterbury’s safeguarding measures are working. Compassion and empathy need to be in evidence instead of protecting abusers and the reputation of the Church.

Which one ? Justin Welby was a junior priest when this was going on. I think that he was WRONG to resign over this. It is not his fault. He only joined the ministry as the lowest of the low in 1992 and was an ordinary parish priest till 1992 and then took on minor rolls at Coventry Cathedral for a number of years, He only became a bishop in 2011. He only became Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013 by which time Smyth had been in Southern Africa for 19 years and died in South Africa in 2018. Once Justin Welby was fully appraised of the facts, it was history. The Archbishop of Canterbury has many duties, a 60 hour a week job and going out into the street wearing sackcloth and ashes and ringing a bell as a leper was not going to help anyone. Bearing in mind their reputation for casual violence and permanent injury to their victims, the prospect of South African police taking action over this was virtually nil.
Many of Smyth's victims would have preferred if Channel 4 (muck-raking for ratings) had kept out of it. At least Smyth did not irreparably mutilate the genitals of any of his victims, a vile and sexually perverted crime perpetrated upon defenceless babies and children with which many at Channel 4 are complicit. A translation of Jesus's words, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone".
Unlike any of the defenceless babies and children subjected to mutilation, any of Smyth's boys could have said "NO !" ..... but they didn't. Any of those at Winchester school could have gone straight to the police or social services with what they knew, or upon an invitation by John Smyth to submit. Submission in all cases appears to have been voluntary and has hints of religious extremism including cleansing of the soul by self-mortification about it (trying to share the sufferings of Jesus) .... Certainly in his younger days Pope John Paul II did it. Voluntarily submitting to someone else beating you is not too different.
Kathy goes on about Smyth's crimes in Zimbabwe. Why has Kathy not gone out to Zimbabwe and exposed the wickedness of the government and a police force which casually tortures and murders people and hammered and hammered on about THAT night after night, but NO ! She has picked on someone most unlikely to fight back. Unlike a pack of wolves dragging down a stag, there are those behind Kathy who have worked with psychopathic and sadistic intent for their own dark reasons to damage the Church of England and to drag down Justin Welby (a psychopathic exercise)
The atheists have nothing to crow about. Consider the evil perpetrated within the atheist Soviet Union.

@@LisaBirgitHolst75 Lisa dear ! .... no-one is making any allegations of RAPE here and in any event, THE CHURCH didn't do it .... John Smyth did it. My experiences within the Church of England at Sunday School, as a member of the Church of England, and 40 years a church bellringer, I never came across so much as a HINT of anything like John Smyth. Throughout my teenage years, the Church gave me a haven from the Godless bullying thugs at school who made my time at school, and the school years of many others, a complete misery. No-one that I knew connected to the Church plastered the urban environment with graffiti, beat up anyone, demanded pocket money with menaces .... or stabbed little girls to death or let off bombs at pop concerts.
Kathy Newman and those behind her at Channel 4, for their own dark reasons seated in an alien and very dark faith, are trying to do damage to the Church of England. Do you not think that those within the Church who were appraised of John Smyth's activities did not double down trying to prevent anything like it from happening again. Smyth escaped to Zimbabwe and out of the orbit of the Church of England. With regard to other churches within the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury is nothing more than the chairman of a very loose alliance. Smyth's activities in Zimbabwe pale into insignificance compared to the crimes of the Zimbabwe government .... even their use of rape of women and girls, men and boys to terrorise is bad enough but is of a lesser order compared to the torture and mass murder and burning of whole villages with people trapped in their homes particularly in the West of the country. Lawlessness in South Africa has resulted in flame throwers being fitted to cars to deal with robbers.
There are many within the Labour Party including its' leader, Keir Starmer who approve of the most vile crimes being committed against defenceless babies and boys. There is no suggestion that Smyth irreparably mutilated the genitals of ANY of his acolytes .... and acolytes they were, who in their religious fervency appear to have voluntarily submitted to what in many religions is known as "mortification of the flesh". If the Labour Party were to be held liable for the vile crimes of many of its' prominent members it would disappear in a puff of smoke. If I had been invited by John Smyth to submit to the "mortification" of MY flesh for the good of my soul, I would have told him where to go. ANY of his acolytes especially in Britain could have gone to the police or social services BUT THEY DIDN'T ..... although Social Services in Britain is, of course, as we know from Rotherham, Telford, Rochdale etc. etc., a monstrous swamp of its' own. How many of the VICTIMS of the grooming gangs contracted sexually transmitted diseases including HIV ? Social Services are keeping quiet on that one aren't they and the victims appear to have been coerced into keeping quiet as well !

Interesting to see the church keeping up with their traditions. And seem to be above the law still. How do you do it? Like the maffia

The church is not any real moral authority, it is best viewed as a very old multinational corporation.

All abusers of children should be punished, it is a shame that Channel 4's enthusiasm for punishment doesn't seem to extend to the grooming gangs from a certain community. Indeed, the phrase 'deafening silence' would seem to be their attitude. Odd that.

Well done, Cathy Newman and Channel 4. Don't go after people like Jordan Peterson, who tries to do the right thing, but go after bad people like this, who present themselves as godly but are woke, dishonest, and self-serving behind the scenes.

Maybe those who kept quiet all this time, were also guilty of the same abuse. When I hear the word Catholic, I think of an institution that predators flock to to sexually abuse children. 😢

3 outstanding Brits: Makin, Newman and Hartley. If more of these people were really ruling Britain, it would be a much better country.

The bishops are selected to be 'company men and women' who won't rock the boat or spill the beans but instead close ranks and not spill any beans. It's the lack of character and calibre that is so worrying: weak people who cannot bring themselves to tell the truth and others who are simply interested in their own careers. We have managers and hirelings rather than leaders and shepherds. A root and branch revision is required and the laity are best placed to carry it out. Parliament should take up its role and instigate this.

am so pleased I got out of the church...and I had such admiration for the way they brought people to God not now...that was back in the 70's but things were even going on here in NZ with the anglican church...
