    Mines a 2010 e81 (owned 3yrs) New shocks followed by a 4 wheel alignment by a specialist means it handles the local lanes like a champ but it’s still cheap for commuting/ family duties. Costs are regular oil changes/service sundries and a water pump. Fun little car. Tip: use ‘square’ wheel/ tyre set up. Staggered sizes (big on the back) just makes them under steer more on those lanes in Mexico 😉

    I've had my 130K 118D for just over a year and it just sailed through its MOT. If the engine sounds smooth at startup and it's been serviced properly, get one. Just don't expect to run it without looking after it, like any modern car they are complex machines and things will go wrong. People are very critical of BMW for unreliability because they are an expensive brand and the main dealer costs are very high and most people own one beyond their means, myself included.. If you want a car to run into the ground with minimal costs get a Toyota or a Honda.

    • @TheeZakjeNL21
      @TheeZakjeNL21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reliability isnt actually the issue in my opinion. Its the price of parts and the complexity that makes driving cars like these quite expensive. Even though its only a 3.0 NA engine, dont expect it to be a simple engine. The engine is very complex but that complexity also makes it amazing.

  • @GloveMaster02

    I got E87 118i M-Sport LCI 2011 Model. Great car to drive and I choose this because of fuel economy is better then the 3.0 litre engine.

  • @stunicholson3921
    @stunicholson3921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would be very wary of buying a n47/57 engine. Even if they have followed the 18k service requirement, the chain will be a massive gamble. Was speaking to an indy garage and they get 4 or 5 requests to replace the chains or replace engines per week. I decided to buy an older petrol engine (2013) that will not have the same issue. Also, key is to make sure you regularly service your car if it is older, they need looking after and it will help prolong the life even further with regular oil changes.

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I know I'm commenting on a year plus old video, but thought I'd have my say...I watched this video a couple of weeks after it came out as I was considering a 1 series (had been eying them off for a few years but couldn't justify the money at the time). Anyway my daily kept breaking, even with regular maintenance etc, but parts just kept failing (GM product). So the timing was right to get into a 1er, and like most people, did my research and narrowed down models etc and went looking. There weren't really many on the market, maybe eight or nine in all of Australia at the time. I eventually got a great 2010 E82 125i Coupe (never seen an E81 here) and have now owned it just over a year. What a great car it has been so far. It had 112000 Kms on it and now has 150000, and apart from regular services, have only had to replace rear brakes so far. Total cost of ownership so far is less than the price of a Kia Picanto base model, so well worth the gamble of an older car. I was lucky it was a well optioned M-Sport, and now has a tune in it...more than enough performance for day to day driving, and it is just such a fun car to drive...recommend these to anyone considering making the jump :-)

I have had to spend a few bucks on some deferred maintenance items but this car new was about $50,000 and it lets me get a car that I could never afford new. I had the N47 120d and it was a nice little car. It went very well with a remap. The only bad thing I can say about the 1 series E8X series is that the build quality is noticeably worse than the more expensive BMW's. The dash, vents ect all feel substantially less solid. Dunno if my comment would get a reply. I am looking to buy a used BMW and it's my first time buying a BMW. So I am looking at 3 cars, all petrol versions and manual transmission: a 2005 registered BMW 116i ES with 87k miles, a 2006 registered 116i Sport with 140k miles and a 2007 320i m sport with 103k miles. I am a bit lost as to which one to choose considering I will not be doing too many miles yearly (at most 5k miles) and I need something easier to maintain and economic on the fuel side. Thanks.

      That’s a pretty good price mate. If it’s got a service history, maybe look for brake pad replacement, timing chain...basically a full service. It’s not that the car has lots of miles, it doesn’t, but more the fact it’s 10 years old. So go for it, but have someone who knows cars look at it

This series has all the shitty issues known to man and I had to fix them all. Not sure about the n52, I thought it would be the same but just 6 cylinders?
