I'm literally 5'2", super busty, and with a round face. Thank you for answering why I've struggled with my buttoned shirt!
SAmeee!!
Twinning 🥲
Same!
Once I started tucking in all my tops about 10 years ago, or wearing very short ones (waist-length), I loved my figure again! It makes a huge difference in proportion. I’m 63, so my tummy is rounded, but I don’t care if it shows, it’s not important compared to the lengthening effect of showing the waistline.
Thanks for sharing!!
I never understood why button-down shirts never seemed flattering until this video. Thank you.
Now we just need a video of how to tuck different sized shirts
Yes, yes, YES! Thank you!! I've always struggled (and avoided button down shirts). Now I understand why - round face AND large chest (with small hips). Thanks so much for these brilliant tips!!
Mayfair10. Same problem I only wear them unbuttoned with a t shirt or cami or tank top and rolled sleeves .
I have small hips and a large bust, too. Isn’t this an impossible shape to fit? I have to de-hip and de-thigh every dress, skirt or pair of trousers, by replacing those curvy, bulging hip/thigh seams with straight ones. Thank goodness I can do most of my own alterations, but not especially well! Most trousers/jeans can’t be narrowed, they have to have no: flat-felled seams, side zips or side pockets, it really limits our choices. My sewing skills are definitely on the beginner side of intermediate!🙂
@@kimberlyperrotis8962I buy men’s jeans. The proportions suit me much better, and bonus, real pockets!
Happy to help!
Re: the tuck-in. My waist is almost the same size as my hips. So when I wear shorts or pants that fit me everywhere else(size 4P) they are very snug in the waist and it’s hard to tuck in a shirt. Any suggestions?
From one petite woman to another, THANK YOU!!!!!
Button-down shirts are shirts with smaller buttons at the collar points, to fasten the collar to the shirt. Button-up shirts are any shirt with buttons lining the front to open/close the shirt.
These pointers work best with button up shirts. I'll leave the button-downs to the menfolk.
Thank you! Button front, button up are not button down!
Thank you! That seems to be the new language, but "button down shirts" always bothers me, when it means anything with buttons up the front.
Came here to say this! Seems a rarity to meet people who know what a button-down shirt is, anymore!
Im 5', busty and round face. U nailed the points i knew subconsciously but never knew the reasons why
I’m not petite, but this was such a good video. Very good advice.
If you sleeves keep coming unrolled, roll a rubber band or elastic band into the rolled cuff. It will offer some help to keep it rolled. I do this every time with my silk shirts.
Omg. I love the look of button up shirts but honestly could never figure why they never looked good on me. Chi, your advice is amazing. Thank you for your videos!❤
I wore vests 30 years ago and have begun to wear them again. I have silk vests and leather ones that are quite lovely. Unbuttoned, they cut a vertical line in the center of your torso, and tapered, give shape to the blouse from waist to hips. How they fall on the hips will make a big difference. I have a larger bust and prefer not to accentuate my waist. Vests are a good compromise, and work well with button-down shirts.
Love vests for all these reasons.
I am very petite and slim with a long neck which is thin. Have my hair in a bob below my ears, above my shoulders. I try to hide my neck with scarves, high necked tops. With some of my tops, instead of tucking, I use an interesting belt which creates the illusion of having a more curvy figure. I will be 74 tomorrow and aging gracefully. I do like this channel and have enjoyed seeing some lovely fashion. I like the look of the shirt under a simple sweater, I can wear that. I like my shirt sleeves rolled although my limbs are not short. Adds interest with a bracelet. I love how the scarf is worn around the open shirt, with the wide leg pants. Thank you for this video.
Most women I know complain about their neck that it's too short or broad, I never heard about a neck being too long, a long slim neck is most desirable like as a 'beauty standard' or 'concept', I think about Nefertiti for example, but when I learned one thing over the years: People see themselves very differently in the mirror as other people see them, body parts can be perceived very weirdly by oneself, while other people have no clue, what you're talking about. Everybody has at least one body part that looks very differently depending on who looks at it: self via the mirror or an observer. There is a word for it (or a condition) that darn slipped my mind at the moment.
I bet you are beautiful and fit and bright and alert. I hope when I am 74 (or rather, if) I draw somewhere near that, too.
It's a pity that many women don't look after themselves at all over a certain age, like, they let themselves go and just don't care anymore.
My mum unfortunately is drifting rather rapidly towards that don't-care-attitude. She doesn't understand that a woman can be comfortable and chic at the same time.
Thank you for sharing and I send you all the best wishes ❤️
Happy Birthday tomorrow! We share a birthday, tomorrow, March 24, I will be 64. Like you, I’m petite, but still slim and stylish. I’ve always loved great clothes and accessories, styling myself and others is my favorite creative outlet🙂
I’ve missed your videos! Could you do something on tucking? How much to tuck especially with a belly? I feel like if I loosely tuck it looks worse than tighter tucks. I’m still trying to mentally let myself tuck as a petite midsize woman too 😕
I think the fabric type can also help, a poplin or Oxford shirt fabric will always be stiff but linen will soften.
Yes the way it drapes makes a huge difference. I need something in the middle of stiff and too lax. It’s hard to find
I just love shirts and other tops with V-necks and collars, I find them very flattering as a slim, but busty, petite. I think my face does tend toward fleshiness and I like having the angles of a classic, pointed collar near it. I adore the Polo knit collared tops, especially, and am so happy they’re trending again. I searched for them for years, along with another trend, the contrast-trim detail. I love that these and other classics are trending again, I couldn’t ever give them up, anyway.
Another reason why button downs can not look good if is you have a short neck, like I do. Thank you so much for your tips!
I love your cris cross front tuck!
I have always struggled with button down shirts. Great video, thank you!
Omg! Yes! Thank you for talking about this.
OMG Chi you are a genius!
Can you do a short video on how to tuck in a long shirt?
Congratulations on your new line!!! ❤
Genius! I’ve always struggled with this and gave up on this type of shirt!
your videos are always so helpful. I always learn something new. thank you SO MUCH :)
Yes, you have definitely opened my eyes to why button downs look terrible on me. Thank you
Thank you, I am so glad you brought this up because that is exactly how I feel….😊I have the same body type as you. I am 5’2 and broad shoulders big bust and short waist. I weigh 135 and feel this is great information..😊❤
New here, happy to find another petite-clothing channel! Style for us too is so important to appear confident and taken seriously. Thank you for these tips!
Your clothes look gorgious! I especially love the linen jumpsuit!
Wide leg pants!! Never thought of that! Thx
Videos like this is why I follow you ❤
It is my favorite item of clothing, and this video is precious to me, to watch and rewatch every time I have a doubt on how to wear it. Thank you ❤️
Finding this video was a huge relief.. I've always hated how my body looked whenever I wore a button-up shirt, but this explains so much
Thank you for this video! I had stopped buying button down shirts because as much as i liked them, i couldn't style them right. My bust is big, but I'm only 5 ft tall so fitted shirts bunch in the back (cuz i dont have a long enough torso). Finding a button down that fit correctly was a struggle.
Okay, I’ve always scratched my head about the obsession around the *yutulux* book totes and their practicality, but this one is adorable!! Congratulations ❤
Thank you. Couldn’t beat button downs but will give them a go again.
Wow excellent advices on button down shirts! Thanks 😊 ❤
Thanks so much! I realized I have several button-down shirts, but ended up wearing a different shirt because they didn't look right on me. I appreciate the tips!
i just realised why i loved high necklines when i was younger and now prefer deep v or scoop necklines. My bust is bigger and my face is rounder. Thanks for explaining it so simply!
Button down…or is it button up?? 😬
These are excellent tips! As a breast-feeding mom right now, but down shirts are a must and staple in my wardrobe. It absolutely makes sense about round face and large bust making this top in its traditional wear rather unflattering. I think this is why I just don’t like turtlenecks! I have found them to be the most unflattering for me. Another really interesting way to wear a button-down is to actually tuck the collar under and button “inside out” which makes the buttons invisible and takes the collar away. Leave the top one or two buttons undone and tuck it under with the color and it makes a beautiful neckline and a completely different shirt style from the same shirt. I love the French rolled sleeve style too.
Button down is an informal shirt. Button up is a formal one
You look great. I love your videos. They are so well done! I have almost the opposite body type and yet most of your rules and tips work for me.
Great advice! I'm average height (5 foot 6) but also struggle with button down shirts looking weirdly odd and overly formal, but i find them super comfy as I hate having my neck exposed. The rolling up the sleeves is a good tip! More for the reason that sleeves are often too short on me, but it helps to soften the overall silhouette. Basically, less shirt on show (tucked in, rolled up and neck open) and more skin!!
I love this! I have so many button down shirts I don’t wear!
Love those wide leg trousers.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the ideas! 😊
I'm learning so much from you, thanks!
Thank you! I always thought it was just me
Good explanations! Thank you Chi.
My pleasure!
Wow you certainly have shown and given great advice in this video , you are spot on,very impressed, I never feel I really suit a shirt but definitely going to try now.Thank you.
Truly eye opening! Thank you!
Great tips, I’m a petite, narrow rectangle shape with a (naturally) large bust, a difficult shape to fit and style. I also avoid those trending dropped-shoulder seam styles; my shoulders, like all my frame, are narrow and these are very unflattering on everyone. I can only size down so much because of my bust size, so the dropped shoulder seams go almost down to my elbows! I can’t wait for this ugly trend to pass, it’s in practically every top I see. There’s a reason why certain cuts, like a standard shoulder seam, became classics - because they always look great! Bring back bust darts, too, you designers and brands! Even the smallest-busted women among us don’t have flat chests like men! I know it costs more to make a shirt with them, so just put that in the price. Apparel shouldn’t be just about huge brand profits! We want natural, breathable fibers, well-designed, classic but modern, styling and quality construction! I, for one, am happy to pay more for top-quality apparel. We American women shouldn’t be so fixated on getting the cheapest possible price, either! It only encourages brands to cut every corner they possibly can. For Chi: ❤
Yes! I hate those dropped seams-and the opposite, diagonal set-in sleeves. Both of them make me look top-heavy even though I have a _fairly_ balanced figure. Cannot wait for these trends to pass; until then, I’ll be looking for classics at the thrift shop.
Bravo, I agree with everything you said! Bring back actual fitted clothes. Im boggled at how even expensive brands are made so cheaply.
Im older so remember how even mid range clothes used to be made so much better 20-30 years ago. Now everything fits like a potato sack!
Yup, definitely with you about dropped or relax shoulder seams. It makes me look more round shouldered and swamped. I started sewing my own clothes a few years ago and finally have shirts that fit. Look at Silhoutte patterns, she has great vids that go into altering a pattern so it really fits each person. Personally I like princess seams over bust darts but that’s less commonly seen.
@@liesesadler5295 Thanks for the creator suggestion!
Thanks you for this advice!
I am not petite but I have short legs so I like to watch petite videos. But this one was spot on and I would never imagine why. I have a round face and full bust - now I know why I look frumpy on shirts
I love your channel I’m not petite but I have learned so much
Awesome! Thank you!
I never look right in a stiff fabric button down. Your explanation is spot on! I am petite with a round face. Open necklines look a lot more flattering. I have a few silk button down shirts. They are easier to style.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this excellent advice! Ive always had issues with button down shirts because of my round face.
Great video, thanks for the tips!
Thank you for your tips! Wish we lived next to eachother so you can help me with my outfits 😊
I will be wearing my button ups more this Spring! Thank you.
Love your videos!!
🤩 yes, yes, yes 👍🏻 I used to work in fashion (in the fitting rooms) rolling up shirt sleeves was like performing a minor miracle 😂 what a difference it makes. All solid tips thank you Chi😘
Great advice & suggestions!
Great info! Thank you!
Very useful! Thanks!!❤️
Thank you so very much for this video! I’m 4’11” & dressing for my frame is very hard. I enjoy all of your videos.
You are so right! I need an open top bec I have a wide face. I love them though and will try your tips!
Wonderful video thanks!
Hi! I'm from India and I find your content very helpful as I'm petite myself. As someone who does not know how to style and put together outfits, your videos are a saving grace! Thank you.
Iam skinny, and I have a lot of button down shirts that fit snugly. I also have super skinny jeans that have a mid-rise. Can you make a video with suggestions on how to use tops/tees/shirts that end right at the waist and jeans that are mid-rise(both unflattering on us petites)? That way, I can still make use of the clothing items I do have instead of having to give them away because they don't flatter me.
I also wear this kind of shirts, elegant!
Very good tips, thank you! ❤🙋♀️
Oh my gosh I love your channel! Thank you dearly ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One of my favorite clothing pieces. Button-down shirts can be so elegant and flattering. Good tips to consider. Thanks, Chi.
You are so welcome!
An excellent video! Thank you!
Hi Chi, thanks for this informative video. I have one more concern of being petite with big belly, that's why i prefer to not tuck the shirt/top in jeans or trousers. Are there any style of jeans or trousers that can work with above hacks for someone with unavoidable belly fat
I'm a five foot 2 d cup and I take my dad's old oxfords to the seamstress. ow I have great fitting shirts AND cute mini dresses
Big thank. Love you.
Thank you for making great videos. Do you have any video about styling the scarf? The way you have done it on the white shirt towards the end of the video? Pls share that. Thank you.
Thank you! Btw, do you have hairstyles video to pair with the wardrobe look of the day?
Waistline at the natural waist or slightly above will eliminate the truncated problem. @4:48 skirt is at the waist and looks very good. Women today do not know where their natural waist is.
When I tuck my shirt in it balloons out and looks frumpy, even the slim fit ones. My bust isnt even that big, but i know if it were smaller it would look more put together. Combine that with the wider or straight leg pants I wear for wider hips, and i feel voluminous. I've tried so many different ways to tuck a shirt and safety pins to close the gaping at the front, but I'm inclined after year to feel like i can only comfortably wear them as an under or over layer
This is great casual look for Spring
With white dress pants and blouse
The blouse has buttons that be open
To your belly as you wear no bra at all
And you enjoy the soft touch of trousers
Touching your skin fully hips to your feet
You put on stylish shoes with no socks too
Excellent 💡 ideas
Thank you! 😊
You not only tucked your shirt in but you rolled the sleeves up and added sunglasses. So it wasn’t a true comparison to say that just tucking in was what made the difference.
Brilliant. 🎉
Thank you, dear. I am so close to getting rid of my button down shirts. There's always something wrong...
😊Experiment & 📷 snap a photo to examine later. Button ups have always been a trial for my extreme hourglass shape ⏳️. In order to button properly w/o any stress at the bust, I often have to size up ⬆️. That leaves me w/all sorts of bulky fabric ↔️ around my waist that is tricky to tuck. They only stay in, secure, & look right when wearing panty hose or spanx that will corral that bulk.
I inherited XL button ups from a beau that I love to wrap in front over a cropped tank. No fussing w/the buttons, worrying about bulk, or being concerned about modesty. The wrap style & full tuck is very flattering to my figure👍. Again, need bike shorts or spanx to secure
I like to wear my softer, silkier shirts open at the collar & knotted at my waist for a cropped look. The only time I leave the shirt hem untucked is under a tighter sweater vest or a slightly cropped jumper.
I also use large, more tailored type button ups as a light "shacket" layer. Leave it open over a body-con tucked tank. If I leave a tank hem out, I might put on a belt to raise the focus👁👁 up to my waist ⬆️ (vs the lower hem⬇️). The shacket takes the place of a blazer that's usually too heavy & hot🥵 in my location.
My long sleeves are always cuffed or rolled to the elbow. 😮Women's shirts tend to be too short for my arms. While Men's shirts are usually too long😔.
Looking for the perfect fabric, cut, & fit can be tricky, but it's worth the search if you like this classic piece.

Good content ❤
👍👍👍👍thank you!!!!🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
😮yes,to everything
Ha. I remove all collars (to change them to grandad collars) - thanks for explaining to me why! 😃
Beautiful looks you showed. I think that many of the 'no' looks showed are in the fashion magazines and I follow their suggestions but they are dressed by slim and tall models not petit like me. 🙂
Nice ❤ pls show how to tuck it is crossed at the waist in jeans
I just spent two days shortening my button downs. For some reason the bottom edge falls too long, at mid thigh. I took 2.5 inches off and made all the difference. I show more leg and it's more proportionate.
Excellent video 🙋♀️tx
What about wearing the shirt open with monochrome pants and singlet top does that work for short women I am 5’1” …love your videos and the great info thank you
I never understood why I couldn’t wear certain styles… until now!,
Excellent video. Someone said, "No one would button up their shirt all they way, but still I tried to wear button-down, and they just horrible on me. I am going to give this a try.
Trinny likes to button the top buttons.
It’s a very Scandinavian look, a fully buttoned shirt, and I do it a lot.🙂
I also have a tendency to fully button up: for delicate, sligthly transparent shirts for sure. I am busty with wide shoulder and narrow back. Open shirts and V-neckd are too scandalous on me me
I have a long neck and a short torso, so buttoning all the way creates good proportion for me.
The word _hack_ has negative connotations. There is no word in English that quite captures what you mean, which is something like _clever and desirable styling option,_ or _stylish thing to do._ The word _trick_ has negative connotations, too, but is somewhat closer in sentiment than the clumsy and vague terms _option_ or _thing to do._
These days, on the internet, lots of people use “hack” to mean a simple change or trick, usually a clever and quick method to achieve something. I think she is using it appropriately here. There are so many egregious English mistakes all over TH-cam but I don’t think this is one of them.
Do you have ideas for winter? ❤❤
sorry if you already have a video like that but I would love advices how to dress with manly clothes as a 5'2'' hourglass woman. I know if I go for an androgynous style I look like a little barrel and I am better off showing my curves. I always wanted to wear a nice suit but don't know how to go about it.
Great tips. A button down shirt has buttons under the collar, that you button down. Button up shirts don’t have collar buttons.
