CANON 5Ds vs SONY a7R3 SHARPNESS comparison test | 4K

  • In this video, I compare the sharpness between the 50 megapixels flagship Canon Eos 5Ds and the 42,4 megapixels Sony a7r3 (a7r III). As I own both cameras I was curious to see which came out on top in regard to sharpness. I was actually surprised by the result as there is next to nearly no difference! It is hard to conclude which is the best high megapixel camera. It is important to notice this is the Canon 5Ds, not the Canon 5Dsr (the 5Dsr is supposed to be sharper as it doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter).

    Mads, that was a nice piece on the differences and what should be clear is glass is king for landscapes (as with most photography). Quality lenses make a lot of difference and you emphasized that ergonomics and feel of the camera are as important - if you don't want to use the camera, you can't get the shot. And I love the comedic blurbs during the video, a good way to get a chuckle during the drier parts.

    My method would be to select the lens series that best meets your needs, be it a set of wide and ultra wide lenses for landscapes, mid-range lenses for portraits or telephoto for wildlife and then pick a camera that uses those lenses natively. All the top cameras will deliver outstanding image's. I chose the Canon ef lenses, so I went with a Canon body.

    Thank you, the conclusion is the most important. Lenses are more important than the camera. I have a Canon 5dsr (good second hand deal on eBay). I saw a bigger improvement from upgrading lenses than i did from moving from my 6D.

      Tnx for this insight Andy. I'm on the first generation 6D and have Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, 16-35 f/4 IS, 100-400 IS II, Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC, and Irix 15mm f/2.3 (manual) for astro. What lenses did you upgrade to, that allowed you to see a big improvement. I've been soul-searching for many years now as to what to upgrade my 6D cause unhappy with DR, and AF points, ability to focus in low light, and low fps. I have a 7DII which I use for sports/wildlife (i.e. applications with more demanding focusing) but I'm getting annoyed with it too (f/8 lens AF is only centre point focus which cripples your composition, and there is no eye AF for stills, plus noise; esp. in the shadows at high ISO). So I've been thinking of jumping ship cause I don't think I can squeeze out anything more from my lenses. The problems I have are camera ones. Still would be interested to know what lenses made most difference for you.

    tip: use some extra noise reduction to compensate for the noise at higher ISOs and even with this, you'll end up with more details than a 42mp Sony.

    I would think dynamic range is more relevant than pixel peeping when it comes to landscape photography.

    • @mk0x55
      @mk0x55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yet lower DR capability of the sensor is something we mostly can deal with in landscape shooting using exposure blending - with added benefits like improved tonal resolution that is otherwise heavily sacrificed when pulling shadows.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I guess it's always to a certain degree. With 40+ mp, DR is for me more important, but most important are some proper lenses :)

    • @mk0x55
      @mk0x55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @SwitchRich I don't intend to advocate Canon for not trying hard enough to be competitive with their sensors' dynamic range. However, I perceive this entire omnipresent theme a bit overstated and overblown. While I would love Canon to have better DR; I also see the other side of it - many less than proficient photographers become lazy and regularly shoot underexposed relying on pulling the shadows in post and then end up with pictures both less sharp in texture and more poorly resolved in tonal gradations (our digital sensors resolve best when fully saturated). And humans are very lazy animals... thus the tendency of many to do that.
      That said, I also experienced scenes that were both very high-DR and quickly changing, for which higher DR would help (though most of the time neither the best of full-frame, A7* nor Nikon's D8*0, would actually suffice).
      I fully agree with Mads point that the sensor tends to matter less than lenses (if at least in the same class) and neither of these matter nearly as much as mastering the art of photography and photographic vision. There is a sickening lot of gear talk all over TH-cam but next to no talk about the other.

    • @mk0x55
      @mk0x55 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SwitchRich Well, I'd say that online discussions about photography are more about tech nowadays - because many call themselves photographers who actually aren't or are very fresh into it and are there for the gear and their own personal image/feeling and not for the art or their photographic output. I stand firmly by that photography is always more about the core skills of it and environmental conditions than gear. Gear is just tools. Just look at the best and strongest photographs even by today's standards and it becomes quickly obvious that gear is secondary to an entire range of other factors there are to great photography.
      All the best! :)

    • @oneeyedphotographer
      @oneeyedphotographer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SwitchRich You can spend a lot of money chasing the 'best" camera. Mostly, that money would be better spent on improving skills, paying down debts, saving for the future. Most times, I find a single well executed exposure does the job, and if not, then I need a lot more DR to get it in one capture. More than the difference between Canon and Sony. Meanwhile, I know the next show of rain or sea spray isn't going to stop my camera.

    Loved the video, but isn't all of the comparisons ruined (I'm exagerating) because you free-transform scaled the 42MP images. Shouldn't the comparison just have accepted the MP difference?
    Or what are your thoughts on this? Still a very telling comparison though.

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only did that to overlap the images. It gives a more precise idea of the sharpness when they're the same size :) Imagine I compared a 24mp to a 50mp. If the photo is not the same size, you can't effectively compare them as switching between them would make all the details in the 24mp photo way smaller :)

    • @hiawrj
      @hiawrj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MadsPeterIversen What about scaling the 50MP down then. Then one wouldn't have to create new pixels. I don't know what I'm talking about. Just disregard what I'm saying :p thanks for the reply.

      Yes I agree a silly thing to do in a comparison test .

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SwitchRich I purposely didn't introduce lens correction for exactly that reason. By upscaling (and thereby making them the same size) you get a more precise difference in regard to sharpness. When you print an A1 image that A1 is fixed despite the difference in megapixels. To get a fair comparison I can't see how else to do it. A 50mp image ought to be sharper than a 12mp when you print in the same size. You'll either have to compress the 50mp to match the 12mp or upscale the 12mp to match the 50mp to make a comparison. By not doing so you can end up having a sharper 12mp photo with less details than a 50mp photo. I don't see how that makes sense. But please enlighten me if I have misunderstood something.

  • @frstesiste7670
    @frstesiste7670 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Advice from a pixel peeper: It's extremely difficult to compare resolution with "natural subjects". That's why all test sites use test charts with fine lines that they know have (or at least should have) finer detail than the lens/sensor combo tested can possibly resolve. If you don't want/have a test chart then try to find a urban subject with lots of detail, signs/writing, buildings, fences etc that are man-made and much easier to compare than vegetation. Also, not to distant to avoid atmospheric distortion, and preferably close to the same plane to avoid DOF problems.
    Btw, I don't try to imply that you comparisons aren't useful, just that it's easier to spot differences with other subjects. And thanks for all the videos, I enjoy them!

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree with all and another point to take away is exactly it doesn't really matter when it comes to a subject like the real world :)

  • @fintux
    @fintux 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The sensor has pretty much zero direct effect on the sharpness. The differences that sensors make are: dynamic range, noise, sensitivity, color handling. Then the camera body adds onto that optionally a low-pass filter, what lenses are supported, image stabilization, mirror or no mirror, reliability of autofocus (also related to the lens and the sensor), color processing, speed, ...
    Of these things in the camera that affect the sharpness are low-pass filter, stabilization, autofocus and in some cases sensitivity and noise (as you can use a smaller aperture/lower shutter speed/higher ISO). Interestingly, Canon 5Ds does have a low-pass filter, whereas Sony a7R III doesn't have one, so one could even have expected sharper images from Sony than canon. However, scaling image up will always cause blur, so it would have been interesting to compare the images at their native resolutions, without the Sony images haven been stretched.
    One could argue that the MP count affects the sharpness, but not really. A 10 pixel camera can make as sharp images as a 10 megapixel camera, but it just makes smaller imagees. Once the light hits the sensor, the sharpness has already been determined. There is no detectable amount of blurring within the sensor.

  • @Quetzalcoatl0

    The contrast difference might be because of the light change. I see different shadows on that path, meaning that clouds probably move above you. Depending far apart (as time) you shoot between the cameras might give you an answer.

    I use Canon glass almost entirely on my Sony A7R3. I only own three Sony lenses. No need to buy a 24-70 f/2.8, 16-35 f/4 or 70-200 f/2.8 when the Canon versions are as good and cheaper. Owning the 5DsR and the A7R3 IMO there is no need to worry about IQ of either, they are both stunning. When you use good glass with these cameras the clarity and realism make you think you can just reach into the scene. Sony has the advantage when dealing with higher contrast scenes where DR comes into play. I eventually sold my 5DsR since the Sony has features I want, but IQ was not much of a factor.

I would lean toward the Sony for all the reasons already mentioned, however, to use that L glass you're going to need an adapter. So i guess that you roll with a barebones ultra to overcome autofocus issues and APS-C crops? That adapter is not cheap (nearly half the cost of the camera haha)

She generally doesn't take care of her models. We have invested a lot of money to buy them. By force he made a new firmware for the 1dx mark iii. Could also be for the canon 5dsR. At least for digital noise and focus. Too bad. We feel cheated.

    Tnx until this video of yours I felt I was loosing something when (I was pixel peeping and) seeing 'blurry' things in my lower MP sensors and I have been fantasising/lusting over large MP sensors. Clearly the same effect can be found with them. I mean : yes it is nice to have more sensor MPs than my Canon 6D and 7DII but the difference is not as great as I have been imaging. The only real benefit seems to me being in case one needs to heavily crop; but this is rarely the case with my photographs. The 6D pays a heavy resolution penalty at cropping but not the 7DII. I'm also a bit disappointed on the SONY 70-200 f/4 as it is a newer lens than the Canon counterpart so I assumed it would be better in terms of corner-2-corner sharpness; plus the Sigma 24-105 is too soft at the edges. My final point is that the colours of the two systems seem pretty close on utube which is surprising - so did you do any tweaking to that effect?

    • @MadsPeterIversen
      @MadsPeterIversen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup exactly. I do think you'll see a difference between a 20mp camera and 50mp camera though. But again it depends if you're printing big. The colors changed quite a lot as shadows and sun changed (and I kept the same white balance) so I wouldn't draw any conclusion on that.

    I think you hit the nail on the head Mads, use the camera that makes you happy. Comparing image sharpness of the cameras we have available to us today is definitely a first world problem!

      Indeed it is :) I'd still like a bit more DR, or at least some software that doesn't halo when using the sliders. Two very different things. But beside that it's the practical use of cameras I value more and more.

    Hmmmm...why wouldn’t you use a Canon lense on the Canon and a Sony lens on the Sony? That’s a fair gear comparison regardless of the outcomes. But what do I know?! I don’t have 34000 subs.

      It depends on what you want to compare. My goal was to compare the sensor sharpness. For that, I need to use the same lens. As you saw I made a set of images both with the sigma and one with the canon lens.

    Sorry Mads, this is a really boring video, not your style. I thought the question of the equipment is finally settled. Whether Sony or Canon, with or without Sigma, that does not matter. Important is always what is done with it!

      That's what I said. It's boring ;) However I wanted to know myself how these cameras compared and I was actually surprised how alike they actually were. But don't worry, this was (also as I said) a one of a kind video. New video tomorrow :)

    You could have made this video x1000 times shorter if you would talk a bit faster / get to the point. All people want to see are visual comparisons. Yes, I understand there are many variables with image sharpness.. but damn... just get to the point before I fall asleep.

      If I did that other people would complain I didn't explain what I did...

      @@MadsPeterIversen Fare enough.. it's true. Can't please everyone. I understand it takes a lot of work to piece together an educational review. Good job for actually creating one.

    You are so funny Mads. This is so boring....It's actually impressive how much one can say in a short time.... ha ha ha you are doing just fine, don't worry. Americans are mastering that one, not you ;-)

      Lol, I was actually surprised too by how long time I needed to explain that yet didn't speak very slow :p

      That's what I said I would :p but I was interested to know what the difference actually was.
