    The perfect camera would have Canon colors, Fujifilm body, Canon menu system, Sony sensor, Sony eye af, Sony video, Canon dual pixel af and Nikon's red stripe on the grip.

    Let me start off by saying I have never tried any of the two cameras. From the reviews I've watched though I've come to the conclusion that they are both great cameras and it's mostly a matter of which one suits someone the best. For example what do I need the eye af for if I'm in landscape or architectural photography? So let's just say that your review is addressed only to portrait/wedding photographers. What I didn't like about your video is the lack of objectivity which was obvious since the first five minutes. At 4:10 you say you were surprised the Canon did well, at 8:00 the Canon does a pretty good job (again) and in general you have nothing to blame the Canon for but the Sony always wins. Come on! Admit that it's just your favourite and it would be the winner anyway! :D To get serious though: what about the buffer size? You took a series of photos and then… waited. Seriously? What if you were shooting a wedding? At 8:52 you stop your burst shoot on the Sony and at 9:15 you're obviously STILL waiting to see them. I heard no comment about that one. In general you did a nice job. Try to look more objective in the future. Cheers!

    Canon has live view - and in the Live View uses a different focus system called Dual Pixel Focus which is not used when not in Live View. It will put "the box" around her head like the Sony, and you look at the LCD screen like the Sony. I was curious why you used on sensor focus on the one camera and didn't do the same for the other camera. It is the DPF that is like magic, and I think the Sony is approaching or even surpassing the DPF now. It would have been cool to see that in comparing the two.

      PeterGregg Yea if youre going to do a review you need to do your research and even more so actually use the camera enough to be mediocre with it. I still enjoyed the photography though.

      I agree with you. I 've just tested my 5dmark iv , in live view , AI servo on , Facial+tracking enable, I can feel similar in sony's AF system.

      So, the canon 5d mark 4 has a "hided" or "secret" eye focus?? Which is working with f1.2 or f1.4 as well as the sony?

    • @sj4231
      @sj4231 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same. Not an accurate comparison. Was this by choice or by lack of understanding the 5D Mk IV's features? It makes you question the accuracy of the review.

    • @forgewire

      What are you talking about? I thought Canon focus through viewfinder is much better due to dedicated separate AF module or am I wrong?

      I was canon then switched to sony a7riii. But the colors suck, really hard to edit and aim the style I used to have with my mark3. Have been thinking about going back to canon mark 4!.. Whats ur opinion?

    Like for Amanda!
    I recently sold my Sony stuff and went back to Canon with 5DMIV. For me ergonomics and color science won the battle for Canon. No more struggles in post to fix those weird tints in the skin. I will miss the eye AF though but not a huge deal since I'm very comfortable shooting DSLRs.

    • @singhkhalsa9953
      @singhkhalsa9953 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      DarkRami actually i was also going back to canon just for color science but this can be fixed within camera just understanding right white balance and adjusting it. Picture look exert same with (a-b:0 g-m:g1). It work. Sony give really natural color. But definitely we are using canon skin tone.

  • @luvnish
    @luvnish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well shot, good comparison if not for the fact that the live view of the 5D was not tested. The live view on the 5DIV is leaps and bounds better than the previous model, has face detect and dual pixel AF which is very good and more directly comparable to the Sony. You mentioned that the 5D does not have that abilty but it does, would be worth it to check it out.

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the Reply Luvnish! At the time of this video I was not aware of that functionality! I am aware of the amazing capability of the Dual Pixel AF and face detect, but had only thought it was available through video. From the many comments on here I have learned that now lol. But I thank you also for making me aware!

    • @luvnish
      @luvnish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem at all. I have been shooting 5DIV for the past year and recently got the A7RIII, and while I'm still getting accustomed to the Sony I find the Canon live view to be holding it's own, more testing needs to be done of course. Happy shooting!

  • @blueoctopus199
    @blueoctopus199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think they are both great but there is something that looks richer with the canon. The sony is extremely sharp and accurate but the canon feels like a rich memory. Might sound crazy but I just feel more with Canon's color science.

  • @silentsnipe215
    @silentsnipe215 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've truly been in a debate on these 2 exact camera's lol. I've watched so many videos on the 2 and I still cant decide for a while now. I just cant seem to make up my mind, Sony is truly making a beast of a camera, but I just don't know if the switch is worth it. Canon colors are just out right amazing and the mark IV does show improvement with its Dynamic Range that I have been looking for and canon ergonomics and menus are just so simple and easy to use. It's a constant battle between the 2 I just don't know what to do. Great video I was about to ask about what adapter you used, but I saw that you stated to someone else its the sigma mc-11 adapter and quite surprised on how well it was working for you and that made it a little bit more intriguing to switch over instead of going with the metabones which cost more . Did you have to update it or anything. Love the video thanks for sharing I will be fighting myself on this and I'm sure there will be more cameras by the time I decide lol. Sorry for the long message you have a new sub.

    Got so much canon and sigma canon mount glass.. got a 5d mk iv and want to buy a second body but no more glass for now.. What would you suggest? Go for the sony A7RIII or another 5d mk iv as a second body?

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Colin! I think that if you are primarily wanting a second body for professional business work, then def get a second canon body for easier work flow. If you were wanting a second body more for shooting a different style of work like me, then invest in the Sony. Hope that helps!

    Just shows you that once you use big lenses and adapters, the advantage of "small" size of mirrorless goes away very quickly. In fact, it becomes much harder to use due to lens/body size-weight imbalance and smaller grip. It's also regrettable that Sony could not keep the original small size of A7r Mk I or even go smaller for portable use.

    • @philindeblanc

    You really need to put some Sony glass on the A7RIII to see it sing. Nothing like native glass to see the true potential of the camera. You don't need expensive GM glass either; the FE 85mm f/1.8 is a cheap, really sharp portrait lens. You are really asking Usain Bolt to run the 100m with dancing shoes when you use adapted glass, in my opinion.

    • @AllenNopPhoto

    Enjoyed the video. I hope you get to the 500 likes! One thing though, at 4:19 the Canon 5D4 has Live View autofocus, which actually tracks faces better than Sony. I'm sure you've heard of the amazing Canon DPAF that everyone talks about? Live View is the only way to use it. It shoots up to 6.5fps in burst mode while tracking the face. Canon calls it Face Tracking or L-Tracking. Through the viewfinder you are relying on another autofocus technology which is faster but maybe just a little less accurate. It doesn't have eye autofocus like the Sony although I've never heard anyone every say they used the Face Tracking and it wasn't getting the eyes in focus. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to more videos.

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael thanks for the comment! I did not know that the you could take photos while in live view mode with the face tracking feature! I am aware that Canon's DPAF is unmatched especially in video. I will have to try out the 6.5fps in burst mode while in live view! Thanks for the info and thanks for watching Michael! Looking forward to future comments!

    • @MichaelMa
      @MichaelMa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, it's a mystery why no one talks about it. It works really well, but SLR users are kinda viewfinder snobs, even though they all say that Live View focus is more accurate than the viewfinder focus when using a lens wide open. If you want to test it, you have to enable L+Tracking (top left hand corner of QMenu), and also Servo (right under L+Tracking).

    • @AllenNopPhoto

    • @philindeblanc
      @philindeblanc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the body, build quality, the electronic reliability the lens mount, the ergonomics is no DOUBT the Canon. I have both(besides other models of both brands), and I like the Sony large files, and color doesn't bother me so much, but using the camera on Sony after 5 years has been Horrible! Its more of an electronic device and then a camera, although VERY WELL done..but it is not a photographer vision of a camera. Just holding the 2 will tell you right off the bat which you want to hold and use. BUT, mirrorless is a serious and pivotal advantage. If I had the extra need for a brand new camera, ZERO doubt I would buy the R5 Canon

    What type of adapter was used on the canon lens to the Sony cam?

  • @lavaweb1
    @lavaweb1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Two questions... First, why didn't you use the 5D's Live View option in order to take advantage of Canon's Dual Pixel AF... And second, why spray and pray so much for simple portrait shoots? All that does is fill your hard drive with captures you will never need. Thanks for the video! Congrats on being one of the first on TH-cam to actually compare these two cameras!

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott! I had just purchased the Canon 5D Mark IV prior after upgrading from the Mark III and wasn't aware of the Live View autofocus photo functionality. Another viewer commented and had made me aware. And the reason why the fast fps is essential for certain portrait photography shoots these days is that there are moments during a portrait/fashion shoot that are so quick that taking advantage of spraying and praying really is great. It's not necessary if the model is standing still for a portrait, but when you ask them to move, every shot counts even when you only need one. Hope that gives you some insight in my style of photography! Definitely check out my instagram @allennopphoto!

    Whats wrong with the a7riii's recovery of the blown out highlights at 15:50? From the example given, seems a lot less forgiving then the 5d mark iv.

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Clayphish
      @Clayphish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Digital Noise hmmm so you over exposed the a7riii shot beyond what you did with the 5d mark iv? Because to my eyes there is something off with how your model's complexion became with the a7riii. Like the gradient between the highlights and midtones were lost some how.

    I subscribed - I wanted to know if you used 2 zoom H1 and I mean one for you and one for the model - because I think you didn't use a radio conection mic but you made the audio in post editing I mean taking the audio file from the Zoom H1 replacing the audio of the video with the zoom H1 audio file so I guess you have used 2 Zoom H1 - and where you placed the 2 zoom H1 - may be in the back pockets of the trousers of each one of you ? - I'm very curious to know how you did to get such good sound for both your voice and the model's voice - and if you'll do a tutorial on how you solved this audio aspect so both I and many others we will be very grateful . I’m considering this Sony and have a ton of L and Art glass, a little concerned about which adaptor? another review the sigma was not as good as the metabones ? As detail was lost in the corners. The MC11 also caused the camera to freeze in live view, have you had any difficulties or experience with the metabones MkV ... excellent review though ... well worth a subscribe

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graeme! I have colleagues that have the metabones, and it may be sharper in the corners, I think the sigma in terms of functionality may be a bit lower than the metabones, but not by much. For what I paid for for the sigma and the experience i've had with my type of shooting for portraits, it's been a blast, but for a paid shoot like a wedding, or event, I would be a little cautious! Hope that helps and thanks for the subscribe!

    what do you think of colors/skin tones of a7riii vs canon 5d mark iv?

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike! I really feel that the skin tones on the 5D Mark IV are more realistic and close to what we see in the real world, of course that is just right out of the camera when viewing them. But like I said in the video, it can be changed in post. I just wouldn't feel comfortable showing any clients a comparison of the two on the back displays of both cameras as i'm sure they would prefer their look on the Canon rather than the Sony!

    • @mwran
      @mwran 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! Manny did a video a while back comparing the canon to the a7rii to my eye appeared the canon skin tones were better and in some cases still better even after changes in post. I was trying to grasp how much/if any improvement in color there was over the a7rii. I have the mark iv and thinking about getting a7riii

    Okay, a "like" for Amanda, and it's not a pity "like" at all!
    At the risk of waking the Canon haters, which are legion, god bless 'em, regarding the tracking, you weren't comparing apples-to-apples. On the Canon the setting you were using was the "Auto Selection" - phase detection with the mirror down - a setting I never use except when out on the prowl for fowl. It's fast, but not for tracking. If tracking is important, to use the Dual Pixel Auto Focus, you would need to go to "Live View" with the Canon and select "face + tracking". Then the discussion becomes the likely disadvantage of having to use an LCD screen vs. an EVF, but at least the actual focusing systems would be being compared.

    The bread and butter of any pro event photographer is the full frame body with a good, stabilized 70-200 2.8. Right now I have the 5div with the Tamron G2 . The body I bought, new, from Ebay, for 2750, and the lens, like new, from Amazon, with 1100. That makes it 3850. If I buy the Sony now, new, plus taxes, is 3600. Plus the 2500, if I am lucky, the GMaster , it would be like 6100. It is not worth it. Until Tamron and Sigma don't come with G2's for Sony E , I am not doing the switch. I coupled the 5div with the amazing Sony RX10 IV and I am covered in everything, for way less money. Plus, ok, the images, autofocus, might be sliiiiigtly better, but the beauty of the menus, ergonomics and touch screen of Canon is unrivalled

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Adrian, yeah sony still has alot to work on in terms of ergonomics, touch screen, and the menu. I think really the Sony is great for portraits and street style photography. The 42mp coupled with eye af, makes street photography and portrait photography a breeze and joy to photograph. But sports and events, I can't see the Sony rivaling right now.

    It is not very fair to Sony to compare it with adapted lenses to Canon with native lenses. With native lenses the AF is much better on Sony. It would be also interesting to compare Canon with 50L to Sony with Sony 50 1.4, which is much better - contrast, colors, sharpness. I like the colors from Canon also more, but it looks like Sony auto white balance often goes to cooler colors - you see neutral places to be a bit blueish often. With accurate WB colors would be better. Colors and auto WB are still better on Canon.

    • @AllenNopPhoto
      @AllenNopPhoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Milan, yes you are correct about a proper comparison with native lenses. Nice video, it's not very wise however to check high burst AF while she stays at the same focal plane.
    a valid test would be to make the subject go towards you or away from you while you shooting her continuously. if she just moves left to right she probably gonna stay in focus anyways. just saying for next time.
    Canon images look more solid in terms of color and defenition imo

    As a sports/event photojournalist i always can't understand those AF tests - ppl making them have no idea how to use Canon AF and its modes. I have no problem tracking world-class athlets running towards me even using OLD 5D3 with 24-70II and 70-200II combo - i've got like 9.5/10 shots in focus using group of 9 points, i rly doubt that even A9 can compete with 5D3 AF-C performance, not talking about 1Dx2/5D4 with their improved AF-system. Maybe with very fast primes Sony will have the edge, but Dual Pixel AF in latest Canon models sorted out that problem ;)
    Also I looked for a smaller body to use it as travel/street camera, tried to use Sony - technology is great, canon glass is usable, but colors are so off. Ended up with Fuji with few compact prime lenses :)

    Good day, there is a huge desire to move to Sony a7r3. Now I am the owner of Canon and I have a large park of optics Sigma ART. I've seen many reviews, MC-11 and Metabones c Sony a7r3 and noticed the regularity. At a long focal length of 85-100-200 .... the autofocus phase points work only in the center of the image. You shot on optics 24-70 L. At a focal length of 70 mm, you did not notice any problems with phase auto focus on the edges of the picture? How do you like the idea of making a survey? Demonstrate the operation of autofocus on the edge of the picture with an adapter MC-11. I think this question interests many who want to change the Canon camera to Sony and leave the old optics.

      @NICKCINEMEDIA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nikita, I just did a short test with my 70 - 200 lens and Sony with the Sigma MC-11 Adapter. Anything above 85mm, yes a large portion of the center image is usable with the phase detection. When on the very edge, lets say 10 to 15 percent the lens was having difficulty catching focus. At one point when zoomed all the way in to 200, the lens started rack focusing and would not catch focus at all on any part of the frame, unless I let go half pressed on the shutter and repressed to focus again, it would then work.
