This is the place some of my family lived. I love to hear of these kind of places. If I remember the story right, the mine caught on fire and the whole town burn down. Everybody left and they didn't return. My father worked as a truck driver and hauled gilsonite. His clothes were like black sand after helping shoveling the stuff.

@@karenmoore400 I know the mine caught on fire maybe a couple of times. I believe the town was ultimately abandoned because they shut the railroad down.
      Thanks for watching.

@@WestwardTreks The reason the railroad was shut down was because of the destruction was so devasting the last time. The fire was really bad. Most people had to leave because they didn't have a choice. There was no work because the fire took it away. My grandmother was about eight years old when she lived in Dragon. So it was mostly what she told were her early memories. She died 1968. So time has really passed on and very few details were written down. I remember visiting the pace when I was a teenager and there wasn't so much sage brush surrounding the town.

That’s great information. Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know the town burnt down. While touring the town I did see evidence of that. Thank you for pointing this out . Unfortunately the history of many of these towns gets lost. It’s conversations like this that bring them to life! Thanks again for sharing and watching my video.

There’s lots of history at the black Dragon mine. I placed a geocache there decades ago.

I was born in Bonanza which is near Dragon. My grandfather and grandmother lived in Dragon in a half cabin half tent. Many members of my family worked in the gilsonite mines. Cousin was killed in a mine explosion.

My great grandfather worked that mine and my great grandmother ran the boarding house. They had a little community center and my great grandmother also played the piano for silent films. The train was a narrow gauge train that was really important because all the drinking water had to be brought in. My grandpa would fill up barrels with rabbits to be be shipped out for food. Lots of amazing stories.

That dug out is a home no wood they had to bring it down from the mountains. The train could bring fabric but anything else waited it down.

Dragon is the definition for the middle of nowhere. There is nothing out there for miles and miles in every direction. Bonanza is the closest sign of civilization and that’s not much. Incredible place though.
