As the owners of a 1974 Vintage U87 we know there are lots of sound variances between each of the vintage Neumann U87 microphones, can't remember when two of them sounded exactly the same. The SA-87i is a great value regardless which one is which, both sound excellent! Well done!
Thanks!!. Yes, totally agree, capsule tolerance between each mic was up to 3dB sometimes on certain frequencies. This one sounds quite round and big low end. Much appreciated!!
@@fuchidawagyu7815 it works like a charm! Even without EQ or compression it sounds amazing! Definitely sounds just like a Neumann U-87, I love this mic!
They both sound great. I have a new u87 so I don't know what the Vintage one sounds like, but based on the sound of mine, I'd say B is the Neumann. Whichever the real one is, some people clearly prefer the Stam over the Nuemann, so congrats on that. I'm not sure they're 100% matched though...
It's interesting reading through the comments, many are mixed as to which one they feel is unequivocally the original Neumann. Some say it's unmistakably A, others say B lol. To me I would guess the Neumann is B only because it's slightly darker and softer, with a hair less sibilance, being a vintage mic. A has a touch of modern clarity. But I could be totally wrong haha. In the end both sound remarkably similar and damn good. If you had to edit takes from either, even every other word, and processed them with a bit of EQ matching, I think you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference in a full mix with other instruments!
If I had to guess I’d say A is the u87 and B is the sa87i. I have the sa87 and I’ve noticed what seems to be a little bump in the 1 - 1.8k range. Great sounding mic, everyone at the studio prefers my sa87 to the house u87ai
I hear a top end difference, I feel like A is little brighter/open and B Darker. They are extremely close though. You would have to play them over and over again, that's how extremely close they are. I don't know which microphone is which because I never had a Vintage U87 but either option you can't go wrong. It would be nice to know which is which though :) and assuming Stam not going to tell us because people would just choose the u87ai because of hype instead of ears. Understandable! I do like both but B seem to be more balanced.
Both mics sounded great. After carefully compare both mics, my conclusion is A is Stam. B is Neumann. For example, I hear a little bit bump in "Spoken through my words" part with Mic A, especially in s"PO"ken part, which Mic B doesn't have. I am happy to be wrong.
Is think A is Neumann, those old neumann kill the high end, B sounded the same but more modern, Its really hard to replicate that high end kill on the OG I think Its due to the old output transformer and the way they were made I guess no (which doesn't sound better till you add an eq) ? Please tell me if someone can argument Im wrong :) Also If they are not on the same height the top one gonna catch more of the nose and the bottom one more bass from the chest witch it seems to be cause the B which I said I guessed was the Stam has more bass as we can see he is on the bottom :) Your compagny seems so cool thanks for making these clones they are awesome at the price and they are the best at the versus Ive hear ! I even prefered the SA609 to the Neve one in the video Ive seen ! I don't know if it was a re issue or an og tho and It could be prefered program dependantly
the sa-87i is the only microphone that sounds better than the actual u87 to me while the other copies are usually too sibilant for my taste (Stam is B btw)
Without knowing the end, A Dynamic and medium high; B more define and warm. If i'd to but in blind test i'll choose B. Now do i'll know which are which?
I'm not sure which is which. I wish "a" was the Stam, that would be great news, but I don't think so. "A" sounds smoother, warmer, more controlled, with an almost perfect sound for mixing. "B" sounds more like current microphones sound, harsh, with the sibilance a bit exaggerated and without the body and creaminess of "a". If it's about adding a lot of treble to the vocal take, to give it a modern sound in the style of a 251, with "a", I have the feeling that it would accept it well and give creamy highs while "B" would start to sound harsh and difficult to mix, like most current microphones. Over the years, capsules acquire properties that are impossible to replicate.
A Stam B Neumann Regardless both mic sounds great. I'm listening through DT 1990. A more open top end. B is slightly softer, maybe cos it's a vintage mic ? any answer maybe Josh ?
It's the opposite, Neumann first. Joshua stated this above... Note, Beyer headphones have a sharp spike that adds a lot of sibilance to anything. If you're using them for mixing, I'd definitely suggest getting to something more even in the top end.
I can't decide between the 87i or the 87t, any videos coming soon? I like the ease of use of the 87i, because I don't need to carry around a PSU, but wonder how big of a difference in sound it has with the 87t How hard is to engineer a mic that can be used in two modes with/without PSU (tube/tubeless)? 🤣
Hope B is Stam :-) But A seems to be more detailed and softer on sibilances.... Hard decision. Both sound very good. Thank you for your effort. I'm in deal 🙂
Half the reason people prefer old Neumanns is that they're "dull". It's a lot easier to EQ some air back in (but then the air doesn't have SSSS popping out because they weren't captured super well in the first place) than it is to get rid of spikey sibilance. As a current owner of a U87 ai, and a previous owner of a Vintage U67, dark/dull IS the sound (at least compared to the vast majority of modern mics). I'm just saying this in case you've never used the real ones.

I just bought one of these today! So excited to try it out!

Well done good sounding Mic I love the fact that you’re so focused on nuance at such a young age

To my, B has a decent amount more high end air

I must agree with that. I also have a sa 87. and would guess A neumann, B Stam. Nice work in any case Josh!
I'm pre-ordering now! When do you think they will begin to ship?
Mic A : Neumann
Mic B: Stam
Is that your guess?
@@LogicKeyzthats Josh Stam. he is the owner of stam audio and the guy singing in the video. So his answers are valid, not guesses.
I wasn't aware.

Hands down I prefer B. If that is the Stam I would buy one quickly.
Awesome!
I like B.
The U87 just sounds better. To me, no one has been able to fully replicate the pure sound of the 87. I've tried many clones.

from what ive heard the sa 87t is like a mix between c800g and 87 and is much brighter than sa87i
What's the difference between SA-87 mk3 and SA-87i? target model? I mean SA-87 from U87, SA-87i from U87i?
The SA87i is a 1:1 replica of my favorite U87 ever. The SA87 MK3 was a replica of the average 87 if that makes sense
Hope B is Stam :-) But A seems to be more detailed and softer on sibilances.... Hard decision. Both sound very good. Thank you for your effort. I'm in deal 🙂
Nice mics. They both sound pretty different. Probably because your head is tilted upward hitting the top mic.
To me it sounds pretty much the same. Im sorry..
@@m4schine-gun-kellyiii343 hey no problem, apology accepted.

I will say the stam is A and neumann is B with better roundness. But I will still choose the stam over the neumann.
This is the closest replica I've heard so far
2:17 A
3:08 B
A sounds more Ai-esque.
B sounds sat on or compressed in the mid-range.
you make shipments to quilpué city?
Si claro, puedes venir a retirarlo a la oficina!
Where is the answer?
Im sure A is Neuman. And B SA.
At the top. Josh from Stam gave the answer.
When do they ship ?
In about 8 weeks

A is too brittle, I worked with Neumann before and B sounds right to me
B is the Stam here, go figure!
B is the Neuman there's no mistaking it clear night and day difference.

A Neumann B Stam.
A 2:36
B 3:27
No one is able to replicate u87AI. There is some hidden technology.
I would not want to replicate the U87AI….they can keep the hidden technology 😂
A. Neumann B. Stam. A is more full, more detailed, and doesn't accentuate mouth noises as much.
