  • What's the secret to a long and healthy life? In this episode of The Shift with Sonia Azad, we get the answer from the man who invented aerobics, Dr. Kenneth Cooper. Now age 93, Dr. Cooper sits down with Sonia to reflect on his 40 year running career, the resurgence of interest in physical fitness, and how he shifted from a 29-year old with hypertension and pre-diabetes to a two-time Boston marathon finisher. Dr. Cooper is passionate about getting preventive medicine into core curriculums in medical schools. He has two documentaries on the power of prevention available to watch at: www.cooperaerobics.com/documentary.

Great interview. Have been a Dr Cooper fan since his ’68 book Aerobics, being a data driven program for health. Did the 12 minute test back then with my dad and his hunting/fishing/outdoors partner. I was an average school athlete at that time, and was surprising how tough it was to do 12 minute run/jog. Should have stuck with it. It is amazing at any age that someone can remember the numbers, data as Dr Cooper. Like the probing questions about starting exercise young to be a part of life. We need more like him, and interviews like that, as we as a society do not understand / practice preventative and holistic healthcare.

Dr. Cooper, I read about your work over 40-years ago in Runner's World while I was in college. At 60, I'm still out there walking and running. Thank you for what you do!

This is a great interview, both guest and host. Ken Cooper, at almost 93, speaks with such knowledge, passion, and speed! Seriously, what a sharp mind. Ms Azad did well to keep up. If you're unsure about whether aerobic training has benefits, just look at this man. A lifetime of intelligent work, care, and also creativity to find the answers that few people were even looking for. Impressive. Just ordered some new running shoes.
