    Wholeheartedly agree about mismatched weapons! Some of the most entertaining bouts I’ve had have been me with a dagger trying desperately to close with a swordsman. Another thing is mismatched numbers/levels of protection, like having a fully armoured person fight two-three unarmored folks with polearms.

    • @scottmacgregor3444
      @scottmacgregor3444 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I love mixed weapon sparring. One of my proudest and favorite HEMA bouts was winning with a rapier against a pole arm. One of my most frustrating but also favorite was loosing with a dagger against a sabre.
      In both cases I "did everything right," but lost the second time because my opponent also did everything right. Bastard just wouldn't over-swing when I baited on the edge of his reach, and eventually caught me.

    Love to see Toby back. I would love to see a series on Matt learning to ride and fight as a 19th century light cavalryman with re-enactments of encounters from Swordsman of The British Empire which are always fascinating. The uniforms, the training, the use of weapons, campaigning and equipment, organisation of HEIC regiments v Imperial regiments, recruitment…the possibilities are endless and would be fascinating I think. Hope you do a little filming at the Armoured Fighter seminar just to give us a taste of what it would be like to be there. Great video as always! 🙂👍👌🙂

Their most recent one is about the famous Castillon Swords, which I haven't watched yet, and there's a somewhat earlier one about the two swords recently found in a gravesite in Finland, and unfortunately, that episode is in need of some debunking!

    IDK how often you guys get to read these comments, but I'd be really interested if either of you have any thoughts on why buff coats eventually seem to replace padded cloth armours and arming coats as the layer beneath plate. afaik it isn't any more protective than gambeson (maybe less so), and is maybe more expensive.
    Is it just a fashion/status thing? Or maybe because buff coats are more weather resistant?

    UK seems to have such a rich HEMA and reenactment (among other similar activities). Probably true for Germany and France.

    The armored fighter before gunpowder became more and more invincible and it is a very interesting subject. Late plate steel armor became so good that these well-fed, well-trained fighters must have been almost unbeatable on the battlefield. The trick would have been to keep from becoming exhausted and dragged down. Nothing like in the movies of course.

    • @lscibor
      @lscibor 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nothing about plate armor protects you from getting grabbed and grappled, tripped, or trampled, for simplest examples (it can protect you from trauma of horses hooves, of course, but not from getting grounded). In many ways, it's cumbersomeness and encumbrance can make it easier.
      So even complete immunity to any strike or shot with a weapon on your opponents disposal doesn't make one unbeatable.
      If due to some awful tactical turn of events you are facing 3 men, they can bring you down and capture you relatively easily, even if they can't hurt you at all with their spears.
      Getting butchered after getting captured was very possibly the fate of most French victims at Agincourt, for one famous example, after all.
      I feel it's often omitted in general fiction or popular culture, particularly video games, where there's limited amount of animations and options. Combat in popular media is mostly about strikes, quick and spectacular ones, too.

      @@lsciborTo be honest, what you described is how I think encounters between knights usually went down already in the early 13th century. With impact weapons being much less effective than commonly thought, I just don’t see how a person armed with conventional medieval weaponry could make another person wearing most probably two or more layers of dense mail armour unable to continue fighting without resorting to grabbing or grappling.

      Fatigue is a hell of a drug. I can swing a sword well maybe 200 times before I need a break? I obviously could be more fit, but that's not even counting marching to battle, the energy spent moving in formations, and the length of a battle. Much less than 200 swings if I had to be in armor, dealing with the heat and the weight! If someone with a club took a few good beats on me it could really increase my fatigue, even if the hits don't "count" as real hits

    • @Subutai_Khan
      @Subutai_Khan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@lscibor It's hardly cumbersome. Watch videos of people actually fighting in it and you get a different picture. Yeah of course its some weight you need to get used to but modern soldiers carry more weight and still fight effectively. You see them sprinting like it is no problem. Now imagine a bit less weight but more evenly distributed. It's also not as well-balanced as plate armor would be.
      You were expected to be able to roll, somersault, sprint, fight, jump, climb, ride etc etc in armor with no trouble at all and we have modern evidence that proves this. It can limit your range of motion a bit but not enough to make you an ineffective grappler. Indeed men in plate armor trained hard specifically to be good at wrestling and grappling so good luck getting him to the ground.

    • @digitaljanus
      @digitaljanus 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@henriknemeth3370 You get hot pretty quickly, and at some point you're going to open your visor to take a drink or just catch your breath and wipe your brow. Especially if you're a French knight who's been slogging through the muck at Agincourt in your heavy harness for almost an hour, pelted by longbow arrows the whole time. Now you're vulnerable again. Or your visor gets smashed in or knocked askew and you can't see any more. Your horse can't be as well armoured as you and if it's cut down underneath you, the fall could easily mess you up, and definitely leave you vulnerable to being swarmed by enemy infantry. Or the fact that by the late 15th century cannon and other gunpowder artillery were increasingly in widespread use, and despite how unreliable they were at that point, full plate harness' days are numbered.
