Let me just say thank you for uploading this lecture. Dr Capwell is an absolute legend and he's always very interesting to listen to, especially when he talks about the very recent developments (or, I suppose, redevelopments) in the armour community. Hopefully we'll see that damn second book of his soon!
The whole concept of changing your armor depending on the circumstances and that they may have different configurations was something that I'd never tought about that much.
Can I give more than one thumbs up to this? I love listening to Dr. Capwell. He is such an informative and interesting speaker and, even with all he has done, he has a very endearing humility. Thank you for uploading this!
Glad you found it worthwhile ! Toby Capwell, is a very knowledgeable guy and very approachable. It was a dream of mine to meet him, let alone do an interview with him. Really glad to see my hard work paid off! A lot of work was put into this one, with contacting the museums, editing and working with Toby directly. I'll be there again and will record the next one-Reece
This was a very interesting and insightful lecture from 2014. Much of what is being said makes a lot of sense and in hindsight obvious. Thanks for posting.
Thanks! This was actually filmed last year. Not 2014 😉. His lecture has really got me thinking of how I want to approach my next harness. Lots of things to consider. -Reece
I'm sure Toby will tell us more about the project at the Harnischfecht Symposium, or maybe will wear it, we will see. But never less, i'm happy with my milanese suit, and hell it's lighter than Toby's replica XD
Was there ever any armour painted glazed black finish maintaining purty shiny in pre 1800's? Everything else was very engaging as replicating as best to past methods
16:36 Toby Capwell's black English armor comes to mind. Dont know if that's painted though. You can find some amazing painted sallets out there though as well.
The whispering is fcuking annoying on the soundtrack, I cant imagine how annoying it must have been in person. What is the reason for talking at such an event? There is no good reason.
The person giving the lecture is, Dr. Tobias Capwell. One of the world's leading authorities on medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour. He lives in the UK and has visited countless castles, so you clearly don't know what you're talking about lol!
@@pursuingtheknightlyarts6841 I good reply, and I respect what you are saying. But it would be nice if you came to the UK, see castles and review them. I would provide all transport and accommodation. Just pay for your airfare. I respect Dr Capwell, he is probably the leading man to talk to about this era. I think it's great you had such a leading gentleman in your video. But please, come and see it for yourself. We live in Wales, home of Edward the firsts main Castles, aswell as many uprisings. Take up the gauntlet. I'll look forward to hearing from you.
I'm brand new 2 getting suits of armor and I'm also still looking from what century cause I can't exactly wear anything I want because I'm not exactly... Build.... For it... (big belly and ass) so yh something as awesome as German Gothic armor is a hell no for me or anything that goes tight along the waist or middle of your torso... Tho 14 to 15th century armors I think I can wear some depending on the styles... I'm also going for as light a material as possible because I'm not very strong and got bad back... Yes not wise but I got my reasons 2 do this...my father was why I started this N also.... Come on... It's medieval armor that's reason enough right? But my dad's old movies about medieval times got me hooked to this and I was very interested in the medieval times... Found a store that orders armor pieces N the like so I got very hypedn wanted 2 show my dad but... He passed away b4 I got the chance.... January 18 2018...may he rest in peace...i still choose 2 do this in his name and my own... So I'm searching for styles that would suit me... Right now Im going for 14 to 15th century Slavic armor as I already own a western armor that's supposed 2 be custom made but I think they messed that up a bit... Very tight on some places where I can't evn put the leg padding and gambeson in decently... So yh... Looking for new places that would be better... Might look for a 2kd western armor that got no faulds/skirt so just the breastplate N backplate with light chain mail shirt
@@fleadoggreen9062 oh I am doing that and more I'm not overweight just most of my weight is on my damn ass and belly lol I used 2 go 2 the gym till the rona put a stop 2 that because it's closed then I went 2 the back school in the hospital 4 excercises 4 my back N doing exercises whenever I can... Not so much a sweet eater as I used 2 be so that's no issues N I drink 2 liters of water every day... Try n watch what I eat but eh I ''sin'' occasionally heh 😅
Seeing Toby Capwell in the title is an instant like + fav from me.
I've loved listening to him talk about arms and armor since I saw him on The Weapons that Made Britain with Mike Loades.
Tobias needs his own TV show. He is so knowledgeable
We agree! -Reece
I'd settle for a youtube channel.
This lecture is an absolute treasure. This lecture definitely deserves a name.
Something epic.

I love his English Harness. Might have to get me one one of these days...-Reece

For a person in his position, Tobias Capwell seems like a pretty fun guy.

Hell, now I want that black suit of armor. Damn you lack of disposable income!

Look up Greenwich armor. It’s pretty, it’s shiny, and some is black (plus guilding).

The whispering people drove me half crazy.
The next part I got closer with the camera, so hopefully it'll cut out a lot of the chatter. -Reece

The virgin eagle crest vs. the chad goose crest

It's been a while since I've read the book; but is Dr Capwell the inspiration for a character in Michael Creighton's "Timeline" ?
What did he say about the Spanish?
Tobias Capwell is Umbra confirmed.
WHo is the "12 year old" he's joking about?

Yanks that haven't ever been to Europe, telling us about our history. How many castles have they been to? None in the UK!!!!!
