I myself don't have a size preference, simply because I enjoy carrying cool knives, and to me, a cool knife can come in all sizes. I can see the appeal of only wanting to carry a crtain size knife, I just don't have a preference. I would carry my ZT 0560 (when I had it) one day, and my Spyderco Dragonfly the next, it just depends on what I'm in the mood for. Every knife has it's own roll, if I am doing yard work one day, I'll carry a bigger knife. Btw, I love dark chocolate!
I like your philosophy and I've never given it as much thought as you have, but for years I've been a two front pocket folder kind of guy. My EDC+ size in my left front & my EDC regular size in my front right pocket. My + size is usually a higher end blade like a Syderco or a Benchmade and my regular size blade is a beater knife like a Kershaw Cryo or a Leek. Thanks again for another great video!
Great vid! I have a similar philosophy, my EDC plus knives (Para2, Grip and ZT0350 to name a few) I clip to my belt and my smaller EDC knives (Spyderco Sage, Delica 4, Persistance are a few of them) I clip to the inside of my pocket. I EDC a tactical belt in both civilian and in my uniform (I'm active duty military).
You bet I believe in fixed blades for EDC! If you can work out a way to carry it consistently and keep it out of sight, a fixed blade is a better option almost always.
I guess... but I think most people use the term "every day" synonymously with "normal", "usual", "common", etc. The implication is that this is a knife for normal, common, or "every day" use, not that it's one which is literally carried every day.
I consider your definition of "edc" the small edc, the edc plus the normal sized edc. I'd consider knives like the Spyderco military, Strider SMF and the numerous large Cold Steels edc plus.
When I was working in a grocery store I was carrying one that was under 3" and one 3 3/8" and over. Most of the time I would use the small one because it is easier to manipulate, but occasionally the bigger knife would be called into action, mostly when making a bale since I'd have to clear out holes to stick the wire through. In nearly all other circumstances I carry one larger knife, between 3.25 and 4"
I just switched from the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 a Benchmade 930 Kulgera and it's a perfect demonstration of this, the Kulgera actually has a longer blade, but it's the better part of an ounce lighter, and much slimmer, it disappears in the pocket, while the Para 2 was kind of a hassle to reach past in pocket, but definitely wins on ergonomics.
awesome, im glad to know you feel the same way. if you haven't check the knife out, its about $18 and has a nice sheeth, its leather. but mine has lasted a year and dosnt have any signs of wear, and i mean it when i say i wear it daily.
Please post the EDC plus knives because 'you nailed it" on what I would using my knife for. .Hiking, kayaking, three times a week and once a month a all weekend camping trip. I've watched your other knife reviews and have been trying to copy the names / styles down but its just too time consuming...to type pause relisten try again..LOL Thanks in advance and I appreciate the fact you took you time EXPLAINING your WHY you chose these knives over those knives.. NICE
I have a similar philosophy but smaller. I have in city EDC (2.5") and out of town (3" max), because of the local laws. Any knives bigger than that are in the work/ camping activity category. Whatever knife I bring depends on what I'm doing that day.
EDC Minus - the fancy letter opener class lol. Either way, the Flash 1 and the BM Megumi would find a place there, and those are two knives I personally find worth mentioning.
I completely agree with your idea of an edc category and an edc plus category. And since you asked here's my edc philosophy. If I think I can, I will almost always carry it.
since i can't legally carry a gun here, i combine my knives (multiple blade carry) 1: personal protection. sometimes a small to medium sized fixed blade, or a medium sized to large folder. 2: edc/sheeple blade. a smaller folder, mostly two handed opening. 3: backup blade (if i choose to carry one): neck knife for either emergency defensive use AND edc all the other knife blades i carry on my person are on multitools, my victorinoxes or on my keys. they get rarely used.
Nice video! I love my knives of all sizes. My EDC is the Soyderco Delica and Centofante 3, Sog Flashback, CRKT Swindle and Heiho, and Case Wharncliffe Copperlock. I have sub -EDC's like the Kershaw leek, Spyderco Tern, and my beloved Case Tony Bose Swayback gent, which is my watch pocket knife. These are my church or office knives. My EDC plus knives mostly stay at home, like my Spyderco Manix 2 LW blue, and Raven 2, Sog Aegis, and Kershaw Blur. These only come out for serious work.
Kershaw Blur Tanto. Thin for a big knife, great in hand, love the action on it, deep serrations, flow through design and great thumb studs. The only thing i would change is the pocket clip, its big and the knife rides too high in the pocket. Great Video!
I also live in Missouri and I believe in carrying 3 EDC knives and my multi-tool. Each of my blades are different. And there have been several days when I needed and used all three professionally as well as in my personal life. I think that I keep more items in pockets than in my car. lol
My two cents - In Missouri a blade under 4" is considered a pocket knife and not a concealed weapon, therefore, I prefer knives as close to (but under) 4" as I can get. Reason: I always conceal carry a firearm, but a larger knife gives me a less-than-lethal SD option as a kuboton strike to top of hand, arm, shoulder, sternum. My own best choices for EDC; Emerson CQC8, Spyderco Endura, or Benchmade 710.
I don't have nearly your collection, but a similar philosophy. I range from carrying a multi-tool and no dedicated knife, to small EDC (Often under two inch, so I'm legal anywhere I may find myself when I'm traveling), to larger folders when I can't carry a gun.
I usually Carrie a 3.5 inch knife. I don't like knifes to small. But I also work in a shop. So I don't have to hide what I don't want to. I love showing off my new knives.
I prefer larger knives because I find larger handles to be more comfortable. My favorite knife to carry is my Emerson Commander quickly followed by my Spyderco PM2. I do still occasionally carry my Spyderco Endura 4 aswell.
I have been carrying an Endura 4 for about 4 years now, Prior to that a SOG X-Ray Vision. I was feeling the need to upgrade to a ZDP Endura but in the interest of following LA County & City Laws more closely I opted for a CALY 3 ZDP which is on the way. This has left me feeling a little uneasy loosing about a thumb nail of length, but I just keep telling myself its gonna be fine, I probably wont even notice the difference.
You're so lucky with the range of knives available for EDC. Here in Australia, most of those knives are restricted to import and to EDC one is to risk breaking the law when it comes to 'weapons'. Still, I carry a knife all day, every day as it's a utility tool. The knives I carry are generally used for light duty, but having a bigger blade and a stronger knife is definitely preferable. But I agree with your EDC and EDC Plus concept.
For an EDC knife, because of where I generally wear it (back pocket) I look at thinness and weight. Now, I also look into steel quality much more so then I used to. I need a knife that will either hold an edge really well, or, hold an edge decently and be able to be resharpened easily.
Great philosophy, couldn't agree more. You take a EDC-plus knife when you travel. But beware, some states only allow for folding knives to be less than 3 inches. Just a heads up. Cheers
im so glad you made this video. ive been looking for the name of the CRKT M21-12GD for a few days now and couldnt find it so i couldnt find it to buy. all i had was a picture.
I carry a folding knife system. I have my small light duty knife (currently testing the D2 steel Esee Zancudo) a medium knife (Testing the Esee Avispa D2), and a large knife for doing more brutal stuff (Steel Will Apostate 1108). I also keep a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in the secondary pouch of my multitool's (Leatherman Signal) sheath as a backup. Don't be embarrassed about the size of your collection. I own over 200 knives. Lol
Cant add much to that, you nailed my viewpoint too. What about EDC minus? Like a dragonfly or a scallion?you know, the sort of blade you may opt to remove the pocket clip even. Smaller than EDC but larger than say a ladybug sized " keychain knife"? Or as i call them " pajama knives"
I see he likes a lot of the spyderco's, which I know a lot of people just love, but for me and my big hands, opening an EDC sized pocket knife with one hand isn't just slow, its actually difficult. Its funny, I used to carry a spyderco knife everyday when I was younger, (12-14) and never had any problems with it, it served me well, but past 14, I guess I grew cause it got hard to open. Anyway, my new favorite is the Kershaw Blackout, non serated.
Good point. I have a number of knives that would fit in to a smaller-than-EDC category. I'll consider making a video on that subject, and the role for knives that size.
Hey great vid! I carry the Kershaw Leek, Spyderco Resilience, Recon 1 Tanto, S&W Karambit, and Buck Bantam Reaper. Not all at once anyway, ill be doing a new EDC video soon.
haha I see you still ended up buying a BM 707 after your "Knives I'd Never Buy" video. I love that knife so much! Great way to share your thoughts and get us to think about our own carrying ideas.
when I buy, I look for knives that can convert to left hand carry, tip down is also a plus for me since I'm constantly reaching in and out of my pockets
Your videos about folding knives are great! I want to buy my first EBC knife, not a plus, actually a very comfortable for keeping it in my jeans pocket all the time. I wanted to consult you. Do you have any recommendations for my first folding knife? Greetings.
At 8:35 or so, is that a automatic knife? Because of what I saw the knife came out with the switch and it looked kinda like a switchblade the way it operated. Whatever it is what is it called? Thanks
between the CRKT Follow Through and the Follow Through Compact, would you consider either of them EDC knives? how would you categorize each is what I'm asking
I agree with you on most of the aspects of this video; however EDC dark chocolate is terrible. It melts in your pocket (rendering it nearly useless) and it takes forever to open. It's also really hard to sharpen and doesn't hold an edge. It works way better carrying it in your backpack, but still the edge retention and sharpening issues keep me from buying it.
First! Cool video. I have a similar approach to my knives. I have them in two categories. Basic EDC and "Light" Tactical EDC. For me my basic EDC is a knife that weighs between 2 oz or 3oz and has a blade of less than 3 inches. Light tactical would be from 3.5oz to 4.5oz and with a blade length between 3 and 4 inches. I do that because I like to carry both :)
Thanks for making this video and clearing up some confusion for me. I was becoming kind of concerned that you thought there was no role for the larger folding knife.
do you believe in fixed blade edc? I've been carrying the Smith & Wesson HRT boot knife for a year now. its a 4 1/4 inch dagger that is very concealable, i were it in my belt loops and dont know its there, i also carry a Leatherman Juice, the large Buck Bantam KNife, a streamlight stylus pro, i carry the juice on the belt too, so nothing clanks into eachother. and when i can i carry a CZ82 a well. but anyway, i dont know why no one considers the fixed blade option. i like keeping my fingers.
I just discovered your channel and I'm really liking it so far. I really like my Ontario RAT 1 for EDC. For backpacking trips I take my Ontario 499 fixed blade.
Great video scout! Im the same as you as I dont think of my edc blade as a defenisve tool but they could be easily put into that role during a shitty situation ( generally speaking i like to carry a flashlight with a crownulated bezzle for defense) plus it woul be cool to see your full collection
I understand your point concerning "EDC" and "EDC+" categories, however I have to disagree. From my point of view the EDC knife is the one that you have with you all day, and the one that you're likely to use the most. Why would your EDC knife have a less-than-comfortable handle? I use my EDC from cutting buns for breakfast, to opening letters and boxes, cutting meat for dinner or even prying open capped bottles with the spine. It's also the only weapon that I have on me 100% of the time out of home. I have medium-sized hands, and have EDC'ed smaller knives (my current EDC is an M21-04G) but no longer, because of pure functionality.
To me, it's all about personal preference. I'm a big fan of large, heavy duty folding knives that fit in my jean pockets. But then again, I wouldn't use it for edc because it's too large. That's why I would much rather carry a smaller knife for that purpose, even though I like large folders more. It's not one sided where I think "Oh, large folding knives rule while your small knives suck!" I just like large folders for the size of the blade, not for their use as edc.
Hi, I'm looking to buy a knife for when the shit hits the fan (if it ever does) basically. It has to be top quality, folding knife(!!!), plus size. Useable for self defense as well as survival purposes like batoning etc. One knife that's on my mind is the Cold Steel Recon 1 tanto. But I know there are many more like it out there, what are some good alternatives? Thanks in advance.
Why not one of each. I carry the Cold Steel Spartan as my EDC plus and a SanRenmu 710 for an EDC. Spartan goes on a horizontal pouch on my belt, the 710 in my pocket.
Great video, though my preferences are more your edc+. I prefer something better in hand with a hardier blade. the spyderco manix2 with g10 handle is my favorite knife.
But I agree. Too big of a knife is uncomfortable. I got the Manix xl. And I really like it. Just don't Carrie it as much as I would like. So I got the regular Manix. And I Carrie that bad boy all the time.
Is there an EDC-Minus category, if so put me in there : ) Actually, since I picked up the Benchmade 940 earlier this year that's been my go to. The overall dimensions of that knife hit all the notes. Great topic & video brother
For me edc is between 2.1 and 3.8 oz and 3.25" and 3.75" blade. Any smaller and i feel the it might fall out of my hand any larger and it feels like a brick in my pocket. If it doesn't meet those criteria it usually gets left at home.
Brian Walsh Thanks. I have not, but I've heard the handle is on the chunky side. I did however get the 531. It felt cheap in hand and didn't give me a sense of value by comparison, i'm sure it was a good knife but it was almost to light(2.2 oz). The g10 felt more like frn(not that i dislike frn but at that price?) and the blade steel was 154 cm at 130. I have a 940 and i love that one, practically stole it to, found it on amazon for 117! Other knives: spyderco endura 4 ffg, manix 2 translucent, pm2 satin plain digicam, sog trident black on black, cold steel recon one black on black(went in the bob, to heavy and hard to close for an edc plus the g10 is way to grippy under the clip making extraction difficult) boker 74 auto le and a sage ka-bar combat fixed(also in the bob) I just started about 9 months ago and its became a bit of an obsession, I still cant bring my self to go high dollar and get a microtech or sabenza.
Great choices. Thanks for tuning in!
I myself don't have a size preference, simply because I enjoy carrying cool knives, and to me, a cool knife can come in all sizes. Every knife has it's own roll, if I am doing yard work one day, I'll carry a bigger knife. Btw, I love dark chocolate!
Thanks, buddy. I definitely own smaller knives than these, but I don't seek them out as often, and they get carried less frequently for sure.
I like your philosophy and I've never given it as much thought as you have, but for years I've been a two front pocket folder kind of guy. My EDC+ size in my left front & my EDC regular size in my front right pocket. Good point. I don't really have a name for that range of knives, but I do use them from time to time. "Pajama knife" - I like that... :)
You bet!
You bet I believe in fixed blades for EDC! If you can work out a way to carry it consistently and keep it out of sight, a fixed blade is a better option almost always.

We're on the same page, the knives that I enjoy carrying the most are the one's that actually get used and actually perform well
I try to choose knives that work with anything I might wear.

Your hands make the Persistence look so tiny! Mine fits perfectly in my little hands. Great video, man! Keep it up!
You're so lucky with the range of knives available for EDC. Here in Australia, most of those knives are restricted to import and to EDC one is to risk breaking the law when it comes to 'weapons'.

I just got the spyderco dragonfly in stainless steel with the dragonfly etching on it. It is gorgeos and I can't wait to get more spyderco's.
For an EDC knife, because of where I generally wear it (back pocket) I look at thinness and weight. Now, I also look into steel quality much more so then I used to. I need a knife that will either hold an edge really well, or, hold an edge decently and be able to be resharpened easily.
I work at a wrecking yard so I use my leatherman wave and my kershaw blur but on my days off I cary a benchmade griptilian mini
Great choices. I always carry one of two knives. Either the spyderco tenacious or the cold steel holdout 2.
I carry a folding knife system. I have my small light duty knife (currently testing the D2 steel Esee Zancudo) a medium knife (Testing the Esee Avispa D2), and a large knife for doing more brutal stuff (Steel Will Apostate 1108). Good point. I have a number of knives that would fit in to a smaller-than-EDC category. I'll consider making a video on that subject, and the role for knives that size.
***** Yes, Definitely need EDC minus category
I call that my back-up knife. The Gerber STL 2.0.
Hey great vid! I carry the Kershaw Leek, Spyderco Resilience, Recon 1 Tanto, S&W Karambit, and Buck Bantam Reaper. Not all at once anyway, ill be doing a new EDC video soon.
Good explanation .personally I prefer the spyderco persistence and the kabar dozier for EDC.I like a 3inch blade
haha I see you still ended up buying a BM 707 after your "Knives I'd Never Buy" video. I love that knife so much! Great way to share your thoughts and get us to think about our own carrying ideas.
Scout do you choose your edc knife depending on what you are wearing that day?
i generally like large edc, for example i just ordered the zt0200, overbuilt, strong, capable
I carry a ZT 0561 all the time because I don't mind carrying a big knife everyday. But like you said everyone has different preferences :)
when I buy, I look for knives that can convert to left hand carry, tip down is also a plus for me since I'm constantly reaching in and out of my pockets
Dark chocolate is the only chocolate.
Another good video, LBS! Practical and somehow philosophical and very well done to show your point. Congrats!
Your videos about folding knives are great! I want to buy my first EBC knife, not a plus, actually a very comfortable for keeping it in my jeans pocket all the time.
I wanted to consult you. Do you have any recommendations for my first folding knife? Greetings.
As a 1st knife I'd suggest Spyderco tenacious- it's cheap, comfortable, sturdy, well-maid and rides on jeans pocket perfectly.
Kilo Ton I'm watching a review of it and it looks great. I think I'll listen to you and get that knife. Thanks!
Hi mate, at 6:10, what's the blue one please ?
Thanks
At 8:35 or so, is that a automatic knife? Because of what I saw the knife came out with the switch and it looked kinda like a switchblade the way it operated. Whatever it is what is it called? Thanks
That's the Lightning OTF knife.
my EDC is the manix 2. that's the perfect knife for me. nothing wrong with a smaller knife, however I just prefer a nice 3+ inche blade.

Thanks for making this video and clearing up some confusion for me. I was becoming kind of concerned that you thought there was no role for the larger folding knife.

What is tan knife on the right? Not the leek, the middle one with the black clip.
Crkt m-16
Great video. Im looking to get a new knife. Cant decide between spyderco para mil 2 or benchmade griptilian. Any suggestions??
could you make a video about your dream edc knife? like exactly which features it would have
benchmade 530 super thin, super light. Its now my go to edc knife because i hardly know its there in my pocket
Spyderco Manix 2, what category ?
Great in pocket, good in hand vs good in pocket, great in hand. Genius!
Great video scout! Im the same as you as I dont think of my edc blade as a defenisve tool but they could be easily put into that role during a shitty situation ( generally speaking i like to carry a flashlight with a crownulated bezzle for defense) plus it woul be cool to see your full collection
Thanks for the reply; I enjoyed the philosophy and your knife collection.
edc 2-2.5 in blade
edc plus 3-3.5 in blade
Yup
you should check out the Doug Ritter Mini RSK MK1. great knife in the edc size.
One of my life goals is to get a Bencmade 943/940...but it might be a while till that happens
AHH! The CRKT M16/14 I have the M16-14SFG. It's great! a little large but I don't always carry it.
My edc's; cold steel code 4, spyderco tenacious, crkt ripple
awesome vid, and excellent collection! thanks again for another fantastically useful video
Which one is the tan edc knife under the blue spiderco, it has a red button
What knife is that on the right, third one down in the coyote brown?
CRKT M21-12GD
What was that benchmade?
how abaut SOG VISIONARY I and VISONARY II?? EDC or EDC+??
Any CRKT with auto lawks, they are "virtual fixed blades" and are used by the military
If you like plus size, check out the Praetorian G or Micro Praetorian by Medford Knife&Tool
Why not one of each. I carry the Cold Steel Spartan as my EDC plus and a SanRenmu 710 for an EDC. Spartan goes on a horizontal pouch on my belt, the 710 in my pocket.
3.5 inch blade is perfect and handle no bigger than the griptilian. I carry a griptilian it's perfect for me and never notice in my pocket
I'd love to see a video where you do show off your entire collection!
Dark Chocolate as E.D.C???
Then you'd have a warm dark brown mess in your pants.
+My03Tundra oh my
Every day chocolate
Is there an EDC-Minus category, if so put me in there : )
Actually, since I picked up the Benchmade 940 earlier this year that's been my go to. The overall dimensions of that knife hit all the notes. Great topic & video brother
I got myself a Benchmade 810 Contego for my EDC+
My perfect edc pacific salt great in hand, pocket and ,weight spyderco black with black blade
For me edc is between 2.1 and 3.8 oz and 3.25" and 3.75" blade. Any smaller and i feel the it might fall out of my hand any larger and it feels like a brick in my pocket. If it doesn't meet those criteria it usually gets left at home.
Have you looked at the benchmade 556? IMO it's a great edc that would meet your specs
Other knives: spyderco endura 4 ffg, manix 2 translucent, pm2 satin plain digicam, sog trident black on black, cold steel recon one black on black(went in the bob, to heavy and hard to close for an edc plus the g10 is way to grippy under the clip making extraction difficult) boker 74 auto le and a sage ka-bar combat fixed(also in the bob) I just started about 9 months ago and its became a bit of an obsession, I still cant bring my self to go high dollar and get a microtech or sabenza.
what is the knife with the brown handle to the left of the leek. to the right of the pm2?
Benchmade Griptilian
"Yeah, I need you to pick up a box... no I'm a different guy..."
Hey i want a get a good knife but not to expesive what would you say is good knife
