THANK YOU FOR BEING LEFT HANDED. I was looking at other knife reviews specifically for lefties to buy my first real knife, wasn't sure whether or not they would be practically applicable, but now that I've seen they are I'll be ready to drop some money.
For some one who knows nothing about knives, you gave a lot of info. At the moment I have 2 cheap knives in my collection but looking for more. Thanks.
In August 2014, I purchased an SOG Flash 2, $38 and an Ontario Rat 1, $28 on Amazon and price includes delivery. I'm happy with both of them. They are similar, but slightly different in feel when you handle them.
Could you guys help a guy out suffering from weird local laws? Looking for an EDC self defense knife that is - 11 inches or less, total folded out length. No restriction on actual blade length on this folded knife. I do have small hands. - Blade must be able to fold - Blade must not have either spring nor gravity assist. Blade cannot be balisong style. Wrist flick is okay. Anything pop to mind? -
Chance Phillips I found the CRKT Otanashi noh Ken, but I didn't like the size of the handle and that G10 grip material looks cheap. The Boker Plus Stingray is thinner, better proportioned and has a gorgeous cut titanium handle. Ordering one now. Great tip!
It's funny, I remember when I used to watch videos like these and reviews about the "all mighty sebenza", always look at that price and think how on earth could you justify spending $350- $410 for a pocket knife. Always thought there was no way it could be that nice. Until I bought one. All I can say is that knife changed my entire perspective on knives. Every time I feel it in my hand I love it more and more. Buy one, I promise it will be more than worth it.
They aren't worth thirty bucks, let alone hundreds of dollars. They cost almost nothing to make, but suckers buy them for hundreds of dollars, even though they do absolutely nothing that a dozen thirty dollars knives won't do as well, or better.
Invest in one! You will not be disappointed. Beautiful blade shape, great sandvik steel like the knockout and even lighter. G-10 handle and no assist make it crazy light. $40 well spent.
Nice review. You are spot on about rounding the top of the blade & hole on the Sage 2. I thought my Sage 2 had missed a final step in production because those edges were left untouched. I live only 20 minutes from the Spyderco outlet, so I went to see if they are all left unfinished (that is how the blade looks to me). Of course the answer was yes. The $150 price mentioned in the video was a sweet deal, I paid $185 from eBay & Spyderco had it marked down from $300 to $235 and when I asked if they price watch the rep. said no but they had a 20% off deal, which still put the price at just over $200. Just a small amount of work to the edges on my Sage 2 made it a better knife.
I'm amazed that the Phillips head screwdriver on your Swiss Army knife is still in great shape and you still have the tweezers and toothpick. You know how to treat a knife. Good job and good review.
I have a S&W SWAT First Millennium Run folder that I just love. It is a one had opener and cost about $40. I've had it for over 10 years and goes with me everywhere. Haven't seen them in years but would love to buy a spare. The grips are part rubber and size doesn't matter as I don't weigh a knife to find one a few grams lighter. I like a knife with some meat to it. Light knives feel like toys so that's why I like the S&W so much. Cheers
I'm very happy with my Victorinox knife for everyday carry needs. Yes, the blade steel is not ideal to sharpen but it does take an edge after awhile and plenty sharp for my tasks. I think we carry these for their multi-tool design. I know that I do. Between the Victorinox and my Leatherman they save me a lot of time. A couple of knives that I carry regularly are the SOG Aegis, Tanto Blade and the Spyderco Stretch. Thanks for the vid. I enjoy watching knife reviews
You have a very similar taste in knives. My favorite knives are the sebenza's. The 21 is amazing, 25 is cool too. But amazingly, the kershaw knockout for it's price you get a really awesome knife. built well.
I have to say, I personally prefer a sharper spine, solely for striking fero rods. Each to their own. Great video MrShipp my man! As usual! I've just subscribed. Eddii - UK - 22
Another thing I feel I should correct. On the ZT, there are steel inserts that the thumb studs rest into when the knife is opened. If you look between the sides, you can see the steel. This way the steel thumb studs will not slowly eat away at the titanium through its use. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the frame lock mechanism also has a steel insert.
I've been using a Flash 2 for about a year and love it. I've a bit disappointed in the AUS -8 steel. It's softer than I expected (or the temper is off?), but it comes back easy. Regarding using a magnet. 18/10 stainless doesn't react with magnets (or not noticeably). The belt clip on the boker looks alot like it could be 18/10. I could be wrong. But high nickel steel has a higher MoE than titanium, and may be the reason for using on the clip. Xcellent video, well done and filmed.
I appreciate the fact that you're not simply grabbing at the ultra-expensive knives, and defending their extravagance. But I just never could get with the Sebenza madness. I've said it before, I'll say it again - $400 for an edged weapon/tool is just nuts.
I haven't ventured very far into folders thus far, been more into fixed blades so I don't have very much to compare to. That being said the lockup is very solid with zero play in any direction. It's solid construction does make it a little hefty but it is by no means uncomfortably heavy and I hardly notice it in my pocket.
Good information. Personally I like the Kershaw Scallion, Shallot, and 1660 CT leek for the safety. The only knife Walmart sells made in U.S.A. What sharpener is your favorite? J.W. in N.C.
That makes sense. I just don't like to carry a lot more stuff on my belt. I already have a Leatherman Wave on my right side & a Zippo on my lift. But I think whatever works for you is what you should do.
Nice list of knives. Surprisingly I agree with almost all of your choices except for the Sebenza. If it was significantly cheaper, I would be all over it. The price is really a bummer, expecially here in Europe.
Just to weigh in; I love my Mini-Griptilian. We'll-made, light, easy opening, good lock reasonable price, carries well, good steel. No downsides I've found.
One of the best folders of all time has to be benchmade 940 Osborne I was surprised no benchmades on lost but still very good. I knew seven a would be there but do try the Osborne you won't be let down
Good vid. I have owned CRK's, Striders, Henderers, and Spydies, etc. I think for the bucks, Spydie has such wide or diversified styles I think there is a knife there for almost everyone. They are not F3's or XM18's, or super high end, but good solid knives. I now have 14 Paramilitaries, and carry the dark green one with CTS204P, or the brown one with D2. Its just me, they are thinner and not as strong as Reeves and Striders and Henderers, but cut well. I guess if I could afford a custom Henderer or Strider I would buy and carry one just for fun…Like your vids a lot...
Great video sir. We have similar taste, as I have most of these knives. I believe the new Sebenza 25 features a ceramic ball for contact between the tang and lock bar, same as the umnumzaan.
its put together by hand, and the tolerances are almost perfect, blades are also hand ground, and beinging made in usa is pricy, also, they all come out of one shop, so with the tight tolerances, the price goes up, due to time spent on the knife:)
The Sage is put together in a Taiwan plant that is second to none in terms of precision manufacturing. Generally I shy away from Chinese made things, but in that case, that factory is superb. I own the Sage, but its a safe queen, as is my Sebenza collection, but I EDC the Para 2, modded by solosknifereviews. To me, the Para 2 is the best knife Ive owned, and made in USA haha, Nice!
just a recommendation about the victorinox, the 'victorinox super tinker' is quite good. only 3 layers, a straight out philips head, 2 blades. also comes in an American flag pattern (if your into that).
Honestly, I think he has a great taste in knives. Kershaw - Great, Chris Reeve - Excellent, SOG - Pretty Good, Spyderco - Excellent, Boker - Excellent, Zero Tolerance - Excellent.
I loved the flash II I have two for work and home, but the blade stained so bad. I now carry the spiderco endura. Great choices I can see having any one of your choices.
Good review and a nice cross section for choices. I enjoy looking for the best quality and workmanship for my $. But I realize that too is relevant. As with most things we buy, some are underpriced, some overpriced and some are in the middle. All said and done: if your happy with your choice, then that's probably what matters. Keep cuttln'...
That's cool, I stell use the clip. But I want to get a XM24 clip for it. I just don't like how deep it carrys now, so I think a XM24 clip would be a good upgrade.
Chris Reeve looks so nice, sounds so crisp. But I want a knife a flick lever. Also the company really look after customers. The flash looks like a good no flick lever compromise.
Hands down the best EDC knife is the CS recon 1 mini.... the micro is very nice as well....best EDC defensive would be hands down the KA Bar TDI LE....
I wouldn't have placed the Subcom and the Blur in that mix. Nice collection though, I have most of those on that list including the very exact Subcom and Blur. Thumbs up.
Love for my Spyderco Chinook I and Cold Steel Recon 1. Cold Steel is sooooo razor sharp. Also have a Chinese switchblade that makes a great pig sticker.
Regular XM-18 knives are not customs. Their normal retail price is in the $300's it is a similar midtech knife to the Sebenza. Also, Chris Reeve says no wrist flicking, you can still "flick" the knife with just thumb tension and if properly cleaned and lubed, the Sebenza will fly open. I have been doing it for years and no lockup issues. Also, people complain about titanium on steel, but there are 25 year old Sebenza's out there that have proven the test of time.
A $5 flea market folding knife has been in my pocket for the past 6 years and it has been able to handle every cutting job I have put it to. Carving projects, cleaning battery terminals, cutting plastic and rubber hose, opening food cans, opening envelops, cutting rope and sometimes wire, plastic and steel bundling straps, processing meat... It has done it all. I've kept it clean and sharp and it has never let me down. One of the knives here is 80 times more expensive. Am I missing something?
All knives cut (or at least they should), if that's all you need then a $5 knife is plenty. Higher priced knives are for people that want additional features such as lighter weight, exotic metals, intricate designs, and so forth. Definitely a niche market but it seems to be doing well.
Michael Lee I guess that was the part I was missing. When I was a kid, the pocket knife was an essential tool and I guess that is how I still look at them. Design, materials, weight secondary or tertiary to functionality and affordability. Thanks for the new perspective.
Christopher W Funny, I had to take it out of my pocket and have a look. It says Rite Edge. Made in China. I don't know the company and I did not do any research on them. I bought it thinking, hey if I go into a secure building or bus station and it gets confiscated, I'm only out 5 bucks. Turns out to be a quite good knife.
Own 3 Kershaw blades now, the Blur being my latest favorite. Also have 2 SOG's. The Twitch II and Twitch XL with wood grips. Next buy will be the ZT 350. Also looking at Spyderco but I don't like the Enduro. Something about the handles give it that cheap plastic look. One of these days I'll eventually be able to afford something great like a Microtech or Benchmade. Nice vid!
Well, I ended up getting a Hinderer ZT 0560 Carbon Fiber. ,,, yes a CBCF, and I love the Composite blade and the S-110 V steel. However, I'll have to say I've yet to find anything to mopey e with the Cf scale. Sweet. Thanks.
I have the sog flash 2 and that thing is awesome especially for my job and its a good price. how do you make those landyards? u should make a video or something about making those
KO should be here Tuesday. Ripple or ripple II. Mini or Large Grip. Spyderco Sage Series. ZDP Dragonfly/PM2. Leek was a nice starter for me. CRK small 21. Strider SnG. Hinderer @basic cost. SAK alox. GEC knives. BRKT small fixed blades. Not a fan of SOG anymore. The twitch was great. So many more. ;)
Nice list. I don't care for the SOG brand... Have a couple machetes by them but personally I don't care for their knives... Spyderco paramilitary2 is my #1 EDC hands down, but once in a blue moon I'll break the sebenza out. I also am a big fan of microtech, just got my first ultratech and am looking to buy a troodon and one of the $1600 custom anax by Marfione Customs.
In my Top 10 Folding Knives (under 300 USD) there will be at least a Military, a Paramilitary 2, an 0350, an 0550 gen 2, a Socom Elite and a Victorinox. My personal number one is the Military. But I have to admit that I carry my folders strictly tip down. Can't believe you don't have a Millie or a Paramillie 2 in your top 10 though. Kind regards from Amsterdam
if you sand down the pivot with 1500 grit sandpaper and put light oil on it any knife is silky smooth, especially if it has brass washers. then its even better because you can polish that too.
Exactly you need to close that aperture. At the distance you are from the lense, opening at 2.8 or even 4 would be ok, if you can't add more light, just reduce speed, you're not moving that fast so it wouldn't be a problem i reckon. Anyways, lazy or not, your video is clear and it helped me in chosing an EDC.
my first "knife" was a letherman kick. i still have it, tucked away in a drawr somewhere. that thing got the hell beat out of it. i stopped carrying it when i lost it 3 times in 1 week! i thought i'd better stop using it or my first knife would be gone for good.
I guess it's between three right now. I sorta rotate between my first choice, a CRKT Ignitor sport, the green and black knife, then I swap up the Elishewitz Horus and the Montu Scarab. Thanks for asking. Btw, if you had appx $200-$275 to spend upcoming, and you really wanted a nice Custom, but couldn't afford the high end, or much less even the $400-range.. You basically had to stick to that budget I just mentioned, what knife would you pic ? I'd love a Hinderer Name or any custom. Which one ?
The axis lock is the main reason I am a benchmade fanboy, most other locks can be manipulated with the left hand but they are easier and designed for right hand use.
They are all fine folding knives, but since the first generation, I think that the best folding knife that was and continues to be, is the TOMCAT. How I miss the first gen knife.
Face it: You like the Sebenza because it's a lefty. Was it a subconscious decision to not mention it's the only lefty in your assortment? The fact that you are left handed would make this knife an obvious favorite of yours.
My bad, I must have been thinking of the socom Delta. Blade steel is typically magnetic, but most stainless alloys out there are not magnetic, also called austenitic. Again, it all depends on the alloy. Thanks for the correction. Do you know if there's any others, other than the Socom Delta that use the steel inserts for where the thumb studs meet up the the handle?
Good vid man. It crossed my mind that the Spyderco ParaMilitary 2 didnt pop up on your list...cpm s30v on g10 with milled out nested steel liners and a compression lock?! Man come on!!
THANK YOU FOR BEING LEFT HANDED. I was looking at other knife reviews specifically for lefties to buy my first real knife, wasn't sure whether or not they would be practically applicable, but now that I've seen they are I'll be ready to drop some money.
i have been carrying kershaw blur for about 3/4 years and it is an amazing knife,im not a knife guy but this knife serves me well to this day
For some one who knows nothing about knives, you gave a lot of info.
Different strokes for different folks, you covered well balanced verity , excellent choices.
Great vid. Excellent choices. Could not agree more. Refreshing to find someone who actually knows what he is talking about.
Yes. I am already a sub of hers. Sweet is an understatement.
Could you guys help a guy out suffering from weird local laws? Looking for an EDC self defense knife that is
- 11 inches or less, total folded out length. No restriction on actual blade length on this folded knife. I do have small hands.
- Blade must be able to fold
- Blade must not have either spring nor gravity assist. Blade cannot be balisong style. Wrist flick is okay.

Daniel van Slooten look at the boker plus stingray perfect for what you want
Chance Phillips I found the CRKT Otanashi noh Ken, but I didn't like the size of the handle and that G10 grip material looks cheap. The Boker Plus Stingray is thinner, better proportioned and has a gorgeous cut titanium handle. Ordering one now. Great tip!
Those are some great knives for sure! Good intel!

i really like that you pointed out the ability to attach a lanyard to the standoff on the sage2. very intelligent.
Invest in one! You will not be disappointed. Beautiful blade shape, great sandvik steel like the knockout and even lighter. G-10 handle and no assist make it crazy light. $40 well spent.

reflective lanyard is a great idea for smaller folder knives! I'm going to do this with my smaller folders I've already lost 2 camping in past year.
Cheers
i have a s w model mp for less then 50 dollars fes in
I'm very happy with my Victorinox knife for everyday carry needs. Yes, the blade steel is not ideal to sharpen but it does take an edge after awhile and plenty sharp for my tasks. An awesome knife you mat want to add to your collection is the Kershaw Piston! It's a great knife!!!!
I agree, kershaw is a great, cheap brand! I love them.
The Kershaw knockout is one of the best everyday carry pocket knife in my jean pocket
I currently own a 530, 555, 556 and 10750. My favorite carry is by far the 530, its less than 2oz and wafer thin. It's quite the toothpick.
I appreciate the fact that you're not simply grabbing at the ultra-expensive knives, and defending their extravagance. But I just never could get with the Sebenza madness. I've said it before, I'll say it again - $400 for an edged weapon/tool is just nuts.
+NismoZtuneR34 It's the poor man's Ferrari. You can buy a good-cutting knife for $50. You can have the best in the world, a piece of art, for $410.
That Sage II is gorgeous.
Good vid. Thanks for sharing. I liked the fact that you included the info on screen and in the info section below. Thanks again.
I haven't ventured very far into folders thus far, been more into fixed blades so I don't have very much to compare to. That being said the lockup is very solid with zero play in any direction. It's solid construction does make it a little hefty but it is by no means uncomfortably heavy and I hardly notice it in my pocket.
Very nicely done! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Never have had a Spyderco knife, maybe some day I will break down and get one.
Good information. Personally I like the Kershaw Scallion, Shallot, and 1660 CT leek for the safety. The only knife Walmart sells made in U.S.A. What sharpener is your favorite? J.W. in N.C.

Thanks for the nice roundup. I'd like to know how you make your lanyards.
Just to weigh in; I love my Mini-Griptilian. We'll-made, light, easy opening, good lock reasonable price, carries well, good steel. No downsides I've found.
For EDC you can't go wrong with a Pozada, My Tighe, or any of the M16 variants. All great blades. I carry a tactical M16-14SFG.
Kershaw sponsored this video LOL good one Joe
I wish!
One of the best folders of all time has to be benchmade 940 Osborne I was surprised no benchmades on lost but still very good. I knew seven a would be there but do try the Osborne you won't be let down
Thanks for the video Craig.
I'm getting the Kershaw Blur .
Great video with many options and price points. Thanks for sharing.
Good vid. I have owned CRK's, Striders, Henderers, and Spydies, etc. I think for the bucks, Spydie has such wide or diversified styles I think there is a knife there for almost everyone. Because despite your opinion on him, he's one of the best youtube reviewers out there.
The leek is awesome, razor sharp, I dint use it as an edc but its a great knife.
Great...now I need a Leek...
I love the flat grind on this knife, you can sharpen this type to be areal " Hair Popping" Sharp!!
its put together by hand, and the tolerances are almost perfect, blades are also hand ground, and beinging made in usa is pricy, also, they all come out of one shop, so with the tight tolerances, the price goes up, due to time spent on the knife:)

Very nice knife choices.
Like the edginess on top edge of Sage II blade, works great on firesteel.
just a recommendation about the victorinox, the 'victorinox super tinker' is quite good. only 3 layers, a straight out philips head, 2 blades. also comes in an American flag pattern (if your into that).
Honestly, I think he has a great taste in knives. Kershaw - Great, Chris Reeve - Excellent, SOG - Pretty Good, Spyderco - Excellent, Boker - Excellent, Zero Tolerance - Excellent.
I prefer more budget friendly knives like these - iluvknives.com/top-inexpensive-folding-knives/
I loved the flash II I have two for work and home, but the blade stained so bad. I now carry the spiderco endura. Great choices I can see having any one of your choices.
love my Sage one, i have many knifes but i always go back to it for edc
Nice video. I'd like to know how you make your lanyard, if possible.... Please
Cold steel mini recon best knife i have ever used surprised it didn't make the list.
Yeah, my buddy broke the frame lock on his Sibenza over extending it. Nice selection of knives.
Me both my parents and my sister/brother have a flash 2 i carry it when ever i got out great edc knife
Great video, gave me some good ideas where to look
Good review and a nice cross section for choices. I enjoy looking for the best quality and workmanship for my $. But I realize that too is relevant. Wow I like that scientist model! Wish they would bring it back..
I wouldn't have placed the Subcom and the Blur in that mix. Nice collection though, I have most of those on that list including the very exact Subcom and Blur. Thumbs up.
Thank you for this video ! Well done!!
I have or have had a few of these knives. I love my BM 940 too!
Love for my Spyderco Chinook I and Cold Steel Recon 1. Cold Steel is sooooo razor sharp. Also have a Chinese switchblade that makes a great pig sticker.
very well made video, very informative , congratulations !!!
InformationIsTheEdge Does the knife have a name? You can get crazy deals at flea markets. Even high quality knives at dirt prices.
Thumbs up on the SOG Flash II. AUS8 steel is easy to maintain edge.
Nice vid!
Ended up buying the ZT 301 instead of the 350. Just had to have the bigger one. lol. It's such a beast and I love it.
Well, I ended up getting a Hinderer ZT 0560 Carbon Fiber. ,,, yes a CBCF, and I love the Composite blade and the S-110 V steel. However, I'll have to say I've yet to find anything to mopey e with the Cf scale. Sweet. Thanks.
I love knives!
American quality
I have the sog flash 2 and that thing is awesome especially for my job and its a good price. how do you make those landyards? u should make a video or something about making those
nice review pal ! good job
Nice choice in knives!
KO should be here Tuesday. Ripple or ripple II. Mini or Large Grip. Spyderco Sage Series. ZDP Dragonfly/PM2. Leek was a nice starter for me. CRK small 21. Strider SnG. Hinderer @basic cost. SAK alox. GEC knives. BRKT small fixed blades. Not a fan of SOG anymore. The twitch was great. So many more. ;)
and that is exactly why I love it.
Can you make a video on you you do that lanyard? Great video by the way!
Just got a zt 0550, it is an GREAT edc blade for anyone interested
Anyways, lazy or not, your video is clear and it helped me in chosing an EDC.
thank you for all of this great information! i think im going to look into getting a sog flash!
Can you do a compare/contrast video on the para 1 and para 2 please
I see a lot of complaints over on Amazon in the reviews of the Boker titanium because the blade apparently is often not centered in the handle.
The Sage II is stamped with CPM S30V. A bit of an upper hand than S30V
my first "knife" was a letherman kick. i still have it, tucked away in a drawr somewhere. that thing got the hell beat out of it. i stopped carrying it when i lost it 3 times in 1 week! i thought i'd better stop using it or my first knife would be gone for good.
Great review! I would have added the buck 110, everyone forgets that knife.
Many people say the Taiwan knives have a better build quality than Golden ones. I have a Taiwan built Southard flipper, its outstanding quality.
ZT 0888..nothing could beat it!
I liked the small thin one at 12:10, " Boker Plus Subcom Titanium " ? I think from your description list, And the Swiss Army Knife at the end
Which one ?
can you do a video comparing the different steels used in knives, alot of us dont know anything about it
The axis lock is the main reason I am a benchmade fanboy, most other locks can be manipulated with the left hand but they are easier and designed for right hand use.
Enjoyed the vid and subscribed.
How do you make your lanyards....great video
