    Have a Spyderco Tenacious. Bought it about 3 years ago. $50 or $60 at the time.
    I'm a trucker. And used this EVERY DAY. Cutting zip ties, duct tape. Heavy rubber hoses etc. Always had it in my Jeans pocket using the clip.
    Well one day I pulled it out an noticed the clip retension screws had worked a little loose.
    Thought... Dang. Need to tighten those.
    Well, I forgot... And the screws came out. And I lost the clip.
    Just for the he'll of it, I emailed Spyderco. Told the truth, about the situation bought 3 years ago...etc.
    They sent me. A new clip, new screws, and a tube of locktight, and the Allen wrench to use.
    I was stunned.... WAY WAY WAY beyond what I expected.
    Highly recommend Spyderco. They do stand by the product. I was super happy.

    Two months ago I changed my left pocket EDC for the RAT-1 after watching this video. I have yet to put either one through the worksharp paces yet. I use them both a lot, but the edge retension is really good on both!

    Picked up a Rat1 about a week ago and I am totally in love with it. I was just like you on the design, thinking it looked a little weird but after handling it and using it I completely fell in love.

  • @preparedmind101
    @preparedmind101  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its weird...I like the 8CR13MOV on the Spyderco knives, but not on the CRKTs. Might be a heat treat issue? I work hard not to come off as a know it all. I merely state my opinions as they work for me. I try to reiterate it a lot. You can tell on youtube who wants to be the next reality TV star. They are always serious, and serious is rarely entertaining. Thanks for the comment!

    I love my Tenacious. It holds a usable edge for a long time. I purposefully neglected my edge for a few months to see how long it would hold a working edge, and I was not disappointed. It's no longer my go to EDC knife, but I still keep it around.
    It's easy to wave with a zip tie too!

    I have a Spyderco Tenacious. I have had it for about 4 years and it used to be one of my EDC knives, I recently changed it for a smaller knife due to restrictions at work.

    I bought my RAT1 earlier this year off Amazon for $18. Can’t beat it. The 2nd you pick it up as you said you realize it was well thought out. It really locks your hand in there and the jumping is well done. You know right away how it is supposed to be used. There’s no confusion on how to hold it. It is not new but it is so right it is still popular. I used it for everything outdoors. Hunting, fishing and food prep as well. The flat grind makes it plenty slicey and the handle foots my bigger than average hands comfortably. I like the concept of D2, but I’d go with AUS-8 as stainless matters to me. I can sharpen a knife. I do wish the texture on the FRN (they are not G-10, but you can buy aftermarket G-10 scales) was not as smooth and more aggressive, but I suppose the ergos are well enough done that your hand is unlikely to slip. This thing’s a rugged, useful tool and Taiwan’s knife makers (Taichung) have a good reputation as craftsmen. Even now there’s nothing not to like. It’s a little big for EDC in some places, but it probably my most used outdoor knife. It stows well, but it is sturdy and can take a beating. Would I rather use this knife or my Civivi to skin a deer, probably the RAT. It is not fancy. It is for work.

    I had the original Byrd Cara Cara (paid $15 years back from Walmart) and love it so much that I ordered the new Cara Cara 2 full flat ground, $21 shipped to door. Rock solid work horse, strong Lock Back, sharpens easily. It isn't light but man what a great blade! Nice video, sir! You won't be afraid to actually "use" the Cara Cara 2, and the truth is in that. Ya gotta use it!

    Rat 1 and the tenacious are the first two decent folders I bought. I saw Rat1's at Walmart for 21$ and bought two then. My brother wanted one, so I gave him one and went back and bought another(last one they had). Carry one or the other every day and love them. Awesome value.

    To flip the Persistence use your middle finger under the blade hole and keep the handle steady with your thumb and index finger jammed into the palm of your hand. Takes a bit of practice to have it flip out strongly but its worth the time. Great Job.

    I have a lot of knives including the cold steel ti lite 4 inch. Everyone looks at it and says it's pointless except for tactical purposes. But other than buttoning wood, it serves the function of a knife, fits in pocket well and opens when deployed from pocket which is awesome. It's good quality, sturdy. One of my favorites.

    I wanted a new folder so yesterday I ordered a Rat 1 AUS 8 from Amazon $25 and it arrived today. Now I'm watching videos about it. I like the knife so far and I might start carrying it daily instead of my current EDC of almost 2 years the Kershaw Blur.

  • @Cheese_Meister
    @Cheese_Meister 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Videos Chris! I bought my first knife, the Ontario Rat 1 about a year ago because of your great knife reviews. Keep up the good work. I carry it everyday, makes me feel much safer while exploring alone out in nature. Much appreciated, and highly recommended.

  • @chrissr6640
    @chrissr6640 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I regularly EDC a Rat 1. It's a great knife. In my opinion the Ontario RAT Model 1 is the best folder under $50. AUS 8 is a great Japanese stainless steel. At around $30.00 you can't go wrong. I abuse this knife when I'm at work and it takes it. It takes a nice edge and retains it. The knife is made in Taiwan, but Taiwan is actually known for making good quality knives and tools. A lot of big name tool manufacturers make all kinds of high end tools there. The quality is similar to Japanese made knives. I do try to steer clear of Chinese made knives, mainly because the quality is often inconsistent, and I just don't like the steels they use.

    • @John_BP
      @John_BP 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or even the sog slim jim, not a heavy duty blade but a +4" Aus 8 at only 2.7 ounces? Did i mention its assisted opening and for $50?

    • @chrissr6640
      @chrissr6640 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      john plewa I've never found a Cold Steel Recon 1 for under $55.00. Can you recommend a seller?

    • @chrissr6640
      @chrissr6640 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      john plewa Well the Rat Model 1 will hold up to heavy duty use. So IMO that gives it more capability to me than a smaller or lighter built knife. I haven't looked into that SOG, I'm just not a fan of SOG anymore. They are hit and miss with me. The Tenacious is an excellent budget knife, and if it had a slightly better steel like AUS8 it would edge out the RAT 1 in my book. UPDATE: There's a new Rat Model 1A out with G-10 and assisted opening that's under $50.00. I hope it's everything I think it's going to be.

    I EDC a tenacious. I don't want to lose a knife that costs $100 or more. It has been an excellent knife so far. The 8Cr13moV steel is fine, especially if you are good at touching it up. I like my ZT 0450cf, but can't afford to lose it. Hard to beat for the price.

    1. If people claim you do too many knife reviews, take it as a compliment. You do reviews on what you like and it says people trust the review you give enough to want you to do reviews on other things.
    2. You should carry. Avoiding the situation is ideal, but who do you think muggers are after? The ones scared of them. Well that's my opinion anyway. I just think you should be prepared for all situations. One can not predict the future.
    3. Love the channel. Keep it up.

    Bought the Spyderco Tenacious a while back as a close-out display knife at Cabela's and I love the Dad-Gum thing! it's my right pocket EDC. Last but not least, I always have my trusty Izula on my neck! Thanks for another good video.

    I have, and carry, both the Tenacious and the Rat !, (not at the same time.) I prefer the Tenacious because it has

    Carried a Tenacious for a long time and very pleased with its performance. Some folks complain about the 8cr13mov steel not holding a log term edge, but to me that's not a factor because if you are a user than you hone your knives on a regular basis and keep the edge in order. I'd rather it be easy to sharpen and not brittle and break if you drop it. Watch out buying spyderco on craigslist though... Really good fakes of the Tenacious, resistance, and persistence have been popping up on the web lately for $20 and under in real spyderco boxes... Very hard to spot... Have to check blade play and liners to really tell. Cutlerylover had a vid up.

    Also, I'm no expert in folder steels. I know I like 154CM a lot, but that and S30C is usually expensive, and I don't go expensive on folders. As far as knife steel, I know I believe wholeheartedly in Kabar heat treated 1095CV. Nothing else compares. There are some new super steels out now that look good, but for the price, 1095CV works for me. Regular 1095 in the hands of another company can break though.

    Great Video, Chris. I love my Rat1. Its my woods edc blade---I had a Tenacious and loved it--I had to trade it for something I needed but will be getting another one when I can afford it----Another great blade around that price range is the Kershaw Cryo---Those are my 3 favorite knives----As far as Grivory goes, its not just a Cold Steel material. Kabar uses them on Beckers too--Grivory and Zytel are actually pretty much the same thing--the only different is the supplier who makes them-

      Blade Steel Grade: 7Cr17 high carbon stainless steel. Sharpens easily enough, holds an edge well enough for a duty knife. Comparing to different steels is bogus, as it depends on hardening. Holds it's own against Spyderco VG10(Endura), holds better than my Kershaws, Easier to sharpen than Bucks 420hc. It's a $20-$30 knife that's well worth the money.

    I just bought the Spyderco Tenacious combo (50/50 straight/serrated), I bet it'll be an amazing knife but I noticed the Ontario RAT is way cheaper. Should I go through the trouble of returning the tenacious? Is the switch and hassle worth it for some more cash/ a possibly better EDC knife?

    My first knife is my rat 1. I have about a dozen or so knives now but I carry that rat 1 more than any other. But I just ordered a new rat 1 in carbon fiber with D2 steel, limited edition. $52. I have a feeling it will be my new favorite edc. The knife I have on my wish list which will be the most expensive knife to date is the zt 452cf, $220. I doubt I'll ever spend more than that on a knife.

    I bought my 551 grip(the sheepsfoot blade with hole) on bladehq last summer and it was $72 s&h included. I dunno if its still that price or not but I know that them and knifework usually have the best prices. You can try ebay too I guess, good luck.

    Between the Tenacious and the Rat 1, what would be better for hiking and camping and food prep while camping? Tha ks!

    I have the rat in Od green I love it payed $35 with free shipping and the spyderco tenacious is a god knife yes there's better ones out there but for around $35 you can't beat it and for two months I owned two. I recently bought the smaller persistence and its my new favorite knife. Not to big and not to small. I find myself flipping it out all day. That sounds dirty haha

    Chris, you really need to try an Enlan EL-01. Enlan is a Chinese company that makes knives for some of the big, name brand companies. You can get one on eBay for under $20 and its built like a tank. Better yet, go to Lazy Lizard Gear and order from him. Have him do the pivot upgrade and wave upgrade. It will drive the price up to an ungodly $30 but it is well worth it!

    Nice reviews. Most of us can't justify a $150 or $200 EDC knife. I think you are right on target with your recommendations. I have the Spyderco and am going to order the Ontario based on your review. One that I would add to your list is the Kershaw Leek. I switch every few days between the Leek and the Tenacious for my EDC. I'm looking forward to getting my RAT 1 and putting it into the rotation. Thanks again and keep up the great work!!

    Nice video, thanks! I have the Worksharp shaperner too but I don't understand what you meant by using the kitchen knife guide on. Is it the smaller one?
