That concept art of the sprawling town version of Mushroom kingdom... Honestly, it reminds me of the town you walk through at the start of Super Mario Galaxy :') Before Bowser shows up to wreck shop and kidnap Peach I think blending the Mario 64 Mushroom kingdom and the Galaxy Mushroom kingdom wouldve been absolutely delightful, because as Amethyst said it would make it seem more lived in, but it also would've been a nice bit of consistency and homage to Galaxy. I wonder if maybe it got scrapped because they thought the resemblance to Galaxy was a bad thing :(
Mario Galaxy already has the Mario 64 Mushroom Kingdom, the entire opening area of Galaxy 1 is just a greatly expanded version of Mario 64's castle grounds; if you look at the actual area around Peach's castle in Galaxy it's actually a full nearly one-to-one recreation of Mario 64's grounds, only thing it's missing is the cannon (and the wooden bridge in gameplay, but that bridge is actually there in the cutscenes interestingly). They just expanded beyond and added the town, but the entire Mario 64 kingdom part is all there too (besides off-limits sub-areas like actually entering the castle of course, as well as the inaccessible back courtyard). In fact, that's something that kinda annoyed me about Odyssey's version, is that it's NOT the Mario 64 Mushroom Kingdom at all, not an expanded version or anything, it's a completely different layout and frankly a way less interesting one too. Yeah there's plenty of Mario 64 references but it's a completely different landscape, it's basically just the boring "castle on a hill in an empty field with a straight dirt path" landscape from NSMBWii or 3D Land, just with a bunch of references sprinkled on the flat open field. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were WAY more faithful to Mario 64's setting whereas Odyssey didn't even try to replicate and expand 64's castle grounds, there's basically no resemblance.
i'll never forget the smile vanishing from my face as the pylon just lead straight to the top of the tower instead of into the massive gaping wound in the building in the short walk to the pylon i had fully convinced myself that hole was going to be home to an extended climbing sequence, clinging to the edge of what was left, exploring rooms torn in half, jumping between jutting pieces of structure, all while fending off the usual spooky mario enemies
@@RylixBlizzai YOU GENIUS!! That would be such a delightful way to spruce up Ruined Kingdom, while still keeping it a more self-contained, structured kingdom like it currently is (bc I imagine they were worried ab detracting too much from the dragon). It'd be kind of like climbing up City Hall to go fight Mecha Wiggler, except I'm imagining it less "2D" and more akin to the path you take to reach Knucklotec? Or like the path to fix the power in Metro, a linear end goal while still allowing a 3d camera. It's hard to explain, but you've put such vivid imagery in my head of what could have been!! In both Bowser's and Ruined I've always found the giant wires to cross gaps to be so disappointing, it takes so much "journey" out of it, I think it became really apparent to me from watching these guys do hide & seek or their other challenges. It could've even been something similar to like the flower roads, still having some sort of journey there that can then be obstructed.
@@AmethystSZSMaybe a mod could add this kind of idea? 👀 Fully embrace the “What’s a dragon and level like this doing in Mario!?” shock felt by many of the early SMO players!

The Bubblaine ghost ship makes so much sense! Given how the kingdoms have their “states” they iterate through, perhaps after the first “phase” of the kingdom the ghost ship gets “unearthed” and all of a sudden a good half of the seas are a lot more foreboding. And then you beat the ghost captain with the cheep cheep capture of all things (perhaps there’s an animation of the boss pointing and laughing at the pathetic fish daring to stand against him, only to be sorely proven wrong, adding JUST the right amount of levity to make the more gritty realistic ghost match the rest of the game) and the ghosts become a whole lot more sectioned off. Kinda like how night time sand kingdom has all the mummies but then when you beat Knucklotec that stops being a thing.
am I the only one who thinks she should start a series all about attempting to mod super Mario odyssey to get it as close to the better parts of the art?
So much fanart has been made of this concept art. Guitarist Rosalina was a whole trend for a short while. If you love Rosa, you’ll love all that fanart I’m sure.
This might be an unpopular opinion but something about the layout and way the lands of this game were set up has always kind of left me wanting more, as if something was missing or they didn’t feel as large as they’re supposed to, kind of closed off, some of the art shown here reminds me so much more of super mario galaxy and the way that they captured that vastness but also progression in a much more encapsulating way versus how it actually plays out in the final game, I like them a lot and it kind of makes me sad seeing some of the cool stuff we missed entirely
I felt like too many of them were floating in the air. They could have made them ground-level so that they felt bigger than they actually were, and still have some other kind of solution to keep you in bounds. (Or just straight-up invisible walls like in Sunshine.)
32:43 this concept reminds me of the environments from the super mario bros super show! It looks like they might've taken inspiration from it for this concept :0
30:40 this is almost definitely a Mario Galaxy reference. And I love it! Galaxy is my favorite Mario game and the rabbits would’ve fit perfectly on the moon as the NPCs!
Isn’t this more an allusion to Japanese mythologies? Amy didn’t explain why they’re pounding mochi, but the reason is because the Japanese saw the markings on the moon as… a rabbit pounding mochi. The bamboo also kinda supports this, since this references the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter- aka the tale of Kaguya-hime, the princess of the Moon. (Which also would make sense for this to be the final kingdom, since Peach in this instance would be a princess on the moon. And now I’m wondering if the trek through the Moon Cave might’ve referenced the Five Impossible Requests in earlier design.)
@@Pablo360able You're right, when I thought about it in my head the version I thought about has like a really pronounced t at the start so I felt like how most people said it had no t, but there is a slight t in it. Girl is just chilling in Metro after finding out that the Toad Brigade is willing to look after the Lumas for her. Then Mario comes rolling up and she’s completely flustered that someone she recognized is recruiting her for a really big event and she only just started but chooses to do it anyways.
I was here for the group watch, even better the second time around! You’ve outdone yourself Amy! Keep being awesome! Also loved the Brian David Gilbert intro!
I also love the idea of the final Bowser fight being on those uneven cubes as the arena crumbles! Probably very difficult to program on a technical level compared to a flat arena, but nevertheless I would have loved that extra climactic spice. Really between that, the Lakitu enemies with arrows and spinies alike, and the floating islands of bubblaine, and Shiveria being more tied to the over world, it seems like a vast majority of these concepts were scrapped because “damn, this shit would be so hard to program/would eat up so much memory” and they had to compromise with the limitations of the Switch itself. I’m honestly so proud of them for making as much of their ideas work as they did all things considered
Imagine a scene of Rosalina sitting in her NDC apartment rehearsing an acoustic version of Break Free (the song during the final Bowser sequence), that would’ve been cool 😃
The last artwork of wooded kingdom would have been a dope concept for cloud kingdom. You got a paradise floating island with a mysterious wrecked airship in the distance, a river pathway and it being lined with trees that likely would of had light piercing through the treetops. This probably could have been used as something if they wanted to either expand more on cloud for the story or some place you visit after defeating Bowser.
very nice video! A few things I've noticed: - The sign saying "New Kinoko City" is interesting, since it basically translates to "New Mushroom City", making it a lot closer thematically to the mushroom kingdom (but therefore losing the connection to the donkey kong series). I'm not sure what the actual japanese name for the city is, so I can't really know if that's something they changed during development or not - The Oni with the club definetly seem like a prototype for the stair ogres since they both basically depict Oni and "ogre" is usually a common localization for the term oni - "mochi" is not pronounced "moh-key". the ch is pronounced like the tongue-clicking sound "tch". So it should sound more like "Moh-tch-ee". Very tasty regardless of the pronounciation though! - The small village in Mushroom kingdom seems very reminiscent of the town at the beginning of Mario Galaxy. It would've been really cool to get a callback to that in the actual game!
Love how everyone here focuses on the topic of the video, while the most exciting thing for me was that Amy plays Phasmo lol. It's obviously still an amazing video that has amazing editing, so great job!
Your editing for this video was absolutely incredible! good job :D The graphics you made look so good and the animations are super fluid, idk how you did it but it looks amazing! Also i'm kinda sad we didn't get the concept art version of Sand Kingdom, it looked waaay cooler than what we ended up with in my opinion.
I once had that idea for a smaller game that revisits some of Odyssey's kingdoms, but different places. Like, in the Cascade Kingdom, you go to a bigger shallow area with several small islands and some really big prehistoric creatures. Three really big ones stay in their areas, but of you capture one and enter the area of another, it will attack. In the Cloud Kingdom you go to the Cloud People's castle that is besieged by an army of Lakitus. In the Cap Kingdom you go to one of this twisted looking cities in the background.
And good golly could you imagine the lore implications of the Lord of Lightning having a JRPG looking ass human form? The little hints of brochure lore for Ruined kingdom already keep me up at night imagining this and that! And gosh, the Metro Kingdom Space Program would have been so cool to take part in, with the odyssey perhaps docking INSIDE of that huge rocket and only getting the ability to just fly up and down between earth and moon after the fact, perhaps with some moon bunny exclusive upgrades?
this is funny, you show the cap kingdom gate and I'm like: "wow that looks like where skeleton jack lives in The Nightmare Before Christmas". 20 seconds later: it heavily reminds me of the nightmare before christmas
A thing that I noticed: the moon rocket that appears a few times looks like it was very directly inspired by the Saturn 5 rockets, which were used during the moon landing missions Fun parallel!

The early artwork for Mushroom Kingdom looks straight up like the area around Peach's Castle in the Galaxy games. I know everyone was hoping for Galaxy 3 before Odyssey was announced, is it possible Odyssey started as Galaxy 3?
9:28 d- did she just say what I think she said? "*Water* better way" bravo (also, it'd be neat to see you try and take some of these concepts and bring them into the game with modding :D) I have to say, if this concept art had been implemented in game, it really would have felt more like an odyssey. The final version feels like it's lacking something almost. I get it from a designer's perspective, adding all of those little details would have taken time that they probably didn't have, but wow would it have added so much to the game
as bowser kingdom is (seemingly, since i am not japanese) heavily influenced by sengoku/ancient japanese eras, i think the lakitus with the bows are meant to reference how common it is for armies of ancient asian countries to have bow users in the back to deal mass area damage to enemies. the ogre with the big spiky bat looks like a traditional japanese oni! big rounded frame, boar like teeth and the horns, even the kanabo (which is an actual weapon from japanese history! it’s a metal bat-like stick that is very very big, and used for blunt damage to hit through armours and such) is very similar to them. the later on stairs-holding ogres are less traditional but still has the teeth, colours etc elements around :) (currently at the bow lakitu part! i may be missing the further context) edit: onto moon kingdom, the moon rabbits are common mythos in parts of asian mythos!!! also, mochi is not pronounced with a hard k, more like the ch in cheese 👍 moon rabbits in chinese’s version of the mythology is called jade rabbits, and there’s also golden toads on the moon too! (specifically, amphibian toads, not the mushroom head toads)
I'm gonna pretend that the reason she kept messing up her words during the Cascade Kingdom is due to being struck by its raw beauty. 18:03 Hey, that's a Sunshine Airport plane!
I'll have to agree with lake kingdom. it could have been so much more, it's a disappointment, in the end it was pretty but extremely small and closed, even with the concept arts. in the artwork they were inspired by atlantis but they ripped it all away... it could have been way bigger and more open, to really feel the freshness, probably they didn't want too much water so the seaside kingdom didn't felt repetitive, but to me the beach should have been more vacation looking, while the lake kingdom could have been a bigger lake than... the pond we got. Using the air bubble mechanic like they did for the small structure/shop area, they could have made a much bigger structure and area in general. Thematic wise, atlantis and mermaid stuff is in my all time favorite, so i was very disappointed, underwhelmed and honestly felt suffocating :( omg the dug down house in shiveria would have been amazing! and seaside.. i wish it was like the concept, the floating island (from the water) and ghost ship, it woudl have been amazing! in the end mario odyssey stays a platforming game, so there is a lot of that probably limiting the visual beauty and interest point unfortunately u_u (amongst other things and final decision, but it is still a point they value above the visual aspect)

That's been my dream since I bought the book. Sadly, I'm not that good at modding yet! Lol. Maybe some day
@@8unnylover then theyd be able to come up with stuff
1:26 next video: i made super Mario odyssey concept arts into real things!
I was thinking the same
I'VE NEVER HAD A VIDEO IN MY LIFE THAT HAS BLOWN ME AWAY AS MUCH AS THIS ONE HAS OMG!
Would be really cool to see some of these concept arts turned into an actual Odyssey mod, kinda like the Gold 97 Reforged romhack for pokemon.
I think the idea for the rocket ship was to collect a lot of moons in each kingdom, after collecting moons in bowsers kingdom, you had to go back to metro kingdom, power the ship and go to moon kingdom.
Gru: I will steal the moon
Mario: I will become the moon
I'm sad I only found this channel from that treadmill video... Wish I was here MUCH sooner... ;-;
Awesome videos machine.
Wait, wait, wait, wait... 33:42 DID I SEE AN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DEMON :O
The early artwork for Mushroom Kingdom looks straight up like the area around Peach's Castle in the Galaxy games. I know everyone was hoping for Galaxy 3 before Odyssey was announced, is it possible Odyssey started as Galaxy 3?
Love the selection of music in this video, by the way. So glad people are starting to pick up on In Stars and Time.
I played it shortly after release, such a great game
24:05 I’ve never thought of OneShot as a horror game but,,, yeah I guess looking back at it I’d consider it one
9:28
d-
did she just say what I think she said?
"*Water* better way"
bravo
(also, it'd be neat to see you try and take some of these concepts and bring them into the game with modding :D)
I have to say, if this concept art had been implemented in game, it really would have felt more like an odyssey. The final version feels like it's lacking something almost. I get it from a designer's perspective, adding all of those little details would have taken time that they probably didn't have, but wow would it have added so much to the game
17:21 I can’t believe that CharginChuckOfficial got a number of likes equal to the human population. Good for them!
18:39 'kinoko' is the Japanese word for mushroom, meaning it says 'New Mushroom', so it could have had similar themes to Mushroom Kingdom.
God how I wish we got this much concept art for the Galaxy games and all their levels
17:25
wow, ChargingChuckOfficial got more likes than the total population of the Earth! Rad!
Let's be real that's kinda how concept art works to give potential concepts for what might suit the game - but the video was very interesting ❤😊
The spikes in the mushroom kingdom art remind me of the rocks in acorn plains from mario u
Capturing The Moon would have given the game the same ending as Portal 2
And that's 100% a good thing!
@ that’s absolutely what I meant to imply, Portal 2 is one of my favorite games ever
oh gosh, I want to imagine a Portal 2 and Mario crossover now, where their endings are switched or something
@@cherrynebbie Wheatley: “take one last look at your precious human [Bowser], because it cannot help you now!”
I like cloud. And sand. and cascade. And cap. And you know what I like them all
The fact that they took the Saturn 5 and made it a single stage to the moon is WILD.
as bowser kingdom is (seemingly, since i am not japanese) heavily influenced by sengoku/ancient japanese eras, i think the lakitus with the bows are meant to reference how common it is for armies of ancient asian countries to have bow users in the back to deal mass area damage to enemies.
the ogre with the big spiky bat looks like a traditional japanese oni! big rounded frame, boar like teeth and the horns, even the kanabo (which is an actual weapon from japanese history! it’s a metal bat-like stick that is very very big, and used for blunt damage to hit through armours and such) is very similar to them. the later on stairs-holding ogres are less traditional but still has the teeth, colours etc elements around :)
(currently at the bow lakitu part! i may be missing the further context)
edit: onto moon kingdom, the moon rabbits are common mythos in parts of asian mythos!!! also, mochi is not pronounced with a hard k, more like the ch in cheese 👍 moon rabbits in chinese’s version of the mythology is called jade rabbits, and there’s also golden toads on the moon too! (specifically, amphibian toads, not the mushroom head toads)
I'm surprised you didn't mention that Luncheon looked more tropical and less Pepto in the art vs game!
my favorite is seaside because it’s TOO pretty-excited to see concept art :3
That rocket looks like it's almost a 1:1 of the Saturn V
I love the horror art for seaside! That would be so awesome to be in the game!
I know this is completely irrelevant, but I LOVE the emotional support demon in the background!! Fellow Click viewer! 👹❤
Gotta love ourselves a demon!
@ indeed! I have the rainbow version from this years pride month and I love it! 😈🏳️🌈
Emotional Support Demon spotted! Great video as well!
3:21 Portal 2 ahh idea.
Luncheon is definitely one of the wildest kingdoms in the original, so it’s no surprise that not much was cut
I'm gonna pretend that the reason she kept messing up her words during the Cascade Kingdom is due to being struck by its raw beauty.
18:03 Hey, that's a Sunshine Airport plane!
I was actually thinking it looks like the plane that a few stages of Donkey Kong '94 takes place on.
32:08
reminds me a lot of the opening area of super mario galaxy
I would've liked to see Shiveria Town be a cold, Irish-style wooden town that is in the corner or center of the overworld.
18:32, obviously, they're both based on new york but this art really reminds me of castelia city from pokemon black and white
Thanks for showing it, I feel amazed. So much hope into Smo 2...
That town art is somewhat reminiscent of galaxy's opening, which I think would have been real fun to see in a less firey state
The secret final level of Galaxy 1 has you revisiting the opening area without any fires or invasions, so you CAN see it there.
Thematic wise, atlantis and mermaid stuff is in my all time favorite, so i was very disappointed, underwhelmed and honestly felt suffocating :(
omg the dug down house in shiveria would have been amazing!
and seaside.. i wish it was like the concept, the floating island (from the water) and ghost ship, it woudl have been amazing!
in the end mario odyssey stays a platforming game, so there is a lot of that probably limiting the visual beauty and interest point unfortunately u_u (amongst other things and final decision, but it is still a point they value above the visual aspect)
7:01, anyone else notice that flag on the right? these tostarenans have some bold ideals
I assume you talking about the confederacy flag, right? I just think they are both × red in the background, not that much like each other
Awesome video! Enjoyed the looks at everything behidn the game
im not that much of a horror fan but even i wouldve LOVED scary ghost ship
someone should make a mod with a bunch of the concepts (talking about you amethyst)
8:58
you say that like jaxi wasn't in the earlier pictures listed below but he is in one
