    How convenient for me that you have both of my cameras! I bought a D3300 kit and due to privately buying lenses and extras, I ended up with a D5100 as well!! These videos have all been extremely helpful, as sitting down with the manual and DSLR for dummies books, was never my strong point!! Thankyou! Your videos are well done and have been a great help to setting up my cameras and understanding the principles better! Lewis, Germany.

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Luna Yozora To be honest, don't even bother with manual mode until you know what you are doing, there is absolutely no point. All you will be doing is lining up the exposure meter with what the camera tells you, which is exactly what Aperture priority or shutter priority do, except they do a lot faster! Manual mode is there for people who know that what the camera thinks is right is actually wrong. Until you can do that, manual mode is pointless.

  • @andysharp516
    @andysharp516 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi!
    That was very simple and informative; thank you. I have just bought the D3300 for my daughter's birthday in a couple of weeks and she will need some tutoring on this camera for sure.e treated as separate..and so will I of course!
    Quick question which is bound to come up. When you press the record button to start a video, does it also act as the pause button? It will be a real bummer if all "takes" are treated as separate videos to be edited and joined later.
    Planning to bookmark more of your videos on this nice piece of kit, as and when I can find them and have time.
    She has her heart set on the Canon T3i, which is a great camera also but I think Nikon's reputation and build/quality/resolution/price has won me over as I hope it will her, in time and with practice.
    Thanks again for sharing
    Andy

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy Sharp Sadly recoding is done in clips. Pressing the button again stops the recording and will start a new clip next time.

    • @andysharp516
      @andysharp516 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tom.
      That's definitely an oversight on Nikon's technical department's part.
      I had the same problem with my Sony Xperia Z1 smartphone when I bought it, but they have since fixed this bug with an update.
      So it might be just a question of a firmware update. Sure hope so, as it's a real pain trying to make a film with a whole bunch of separate takes unless you have an expensive editing program.
      I am going to look deeper into this, coming from the days of real film and spending hours in front of an editing projector and cutting and splicing clips manually with glue!
      Cheers
      Andy

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not an oversight, it's just a limitation of the technology. Dslrs are different to compacts and smartphones, whereas they use a mechanical mirror and shutter. When a video is taken the mirror lifts, the shutter curtain opens and the live data feed from the sensor is recorded. Once the video is stopped, the shutter curtain closes and the mirror flips down. To keep the shutter open whilst a clip was paused would cause great stresses on the sensor, and possibly damage it, plus would drain the battery pretty quickly. Only devices with electrical shutters can pause mid clip, so until someone invents a electronical shutter on a dslr (which would defeat the object of a dslr) then that's the way it will be.

    Hi. Very helpful. Is there a book you'd recommend for beginners? Also, do you need a laptop for the sd memory card? I've a PC, but no sd slot. I don't know anything about this stuff, hence the book query! Thanks!
    P.S. Did you mention it works like a video recorder, too?

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joseph P Understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson is a good book, that will help learn the exposure triangle and how changing settings affects other things. No you don't need a laptop, buy a USB to SD card reader. Yes the D3300 can do video as well as photos.

    I just got the Nikon D3300 bundle with the 18-55 ,and 70-300 Nikon lenses.The 70-300 has manual focus,and exposure settings don't seem to be communicating like not meant for this lens.Thanks
