Stressed flying-fox goes into the aviary: This is Banshee on day 3

- Banshee is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who crash landed in a courtyard 3 days before this video was taken. In care she has been horribly stressed, screaming and cranky and difficult to handle.
It has been quite hard to assess her condition, to work out if she had a whacking great closed head injury, if she maybe had ABLV (Aussie version of bat rabies), or if she was just monumentally cranky and stressed by her life.
Fortunately it has turned out to be the latter - and it seems that dear Banshee didn't like something about me personally and wasn't afraid to tell me about it, over and over again.
When we put her into the aviary, she was hanging in a very wary way, with her posture hunched and stressed looking. After a few minutes she'd settled down enough to look around a bit, and I could hear her nom nomming on the grape I popped into her mouth while she was going into the aviary.
After another few minutes she was enduring the meet and greet sniff-fest by the inverted meerkat crowd.
I saw her again on day 4 when I returned Poseidon to his old aviary after his vet check, and she was so much more relaxed looking.

At least she isn’t screaming “Get yer friggin noses off me ya freaks!” She can finally relax a bit, hope she joins the scrum, heals nicely and can project her meerkat stare beautifully. You’ve certainly done well by her, thanks so much for the update
I have that stress level at a cocktail party. Imagine if those guests wanted to poke at you with their noses in your face!
It seemed the other bats could sense her stress and were gentle in the meet and greet sniffies.
Man, you can practically see the gears turning during the "meet 'n greet" as she's starting to realize that even though she's still in a scary, unfamiliar place that at least she's not all by her lonesome anymore. Hopefully the next time you're visiting Merryn's aviary she'll be hanging long and loose with her new batty besties!
I think you got day 2 in Merryn's aviary when I put Poseidon back in after his checkup with Adrian.

After days of screaming you would think her throat would be sore or hoarse...
So glad she is calmer now...
She didn't scream for days, she only screamed when I looked at her or tried to treat her, or touched her cage.
And that kind of screaming is how they also tell off other bats; bat colonies are very loud places and a lot of screaming is involved
She'll be telling the others about that Meg person and the horrid apartment life she went through for 3 days; and they'll be like, "Yeah, yeah, we know all about it. Some of us were there, too, at one point, but this place is all good. No worries, now, girl, so cool it, ok?"

I think some bats are just born crotchety, and Banshee is one of them.

Absolutely the most appropriately named battie I have seen on here! I am SO thrilled to find out that she is only a very crankypants, & that there was no injury or pain that caused it. She does seem to be so much happier in with the other batties. Well done detective Meg!

Meg maybe it's like I tell my daughter with my grandson when he is cranky towards her. They always feel safer to take it out on the ones they know will always Love them no matter what they take out or do or say to you 💜 that's Banshee with you! She knows you love her and won't hurt her no matter what! 💜😊

Awww, so glad to see this footage from a few days later, seeing Banshee not so upset anymore. She really doesn't seem that aggressive anymore, now that she is in the aviary with fellow batties. 💜💜💜💜

Hello Meg, This is one of my favourite clips from the aviary. So good to see Banshee looking less freaked out by life.... Seems not all bats want to lay on their back in the Meg Hospital while you work your magic and heal them... One 'size' does not fit all. If only Meep had been in this video, then it would have been my fav of all time!!!!
Meep lives 1200 kms north of this aviary. Go and look at the map I post every now and then on the community page. Scroll down about 5-10 posts. Meep is with Mandi.
Maybe she needs other bats already used to care, to let her know, it's all good? 🤔

She is really beautiful, and she handled the meet and greet very well I thought. Seeing her calm and settle got a tear out of me. I would bet that her time with you was the only time she has been without other bats, and you had to do the triage...which would feel invasive to her...especially with a bad headache from hell. Banshee has some serious stamina, and she is a real survivor. I love how she grumbled. All the way into the aviary.🥂🖤🇨🇦
She was stressed and needed to lie down and I couldn't provide her with batty company, so she had to deal with it alone. She's such better now. This meet and greet was very mild - some bats can be very personal in their sniffies.
@@Megabattie I have seen a couple that were kind of a mob scene, and dignity be damned. I’m not sure she would have done so well like that. It almost seemed like the other bats were being deliberately gentle and easy with her. Maybe they heard her screaming and cussing all the way from Merryn’s place😏. You did what was needed for her, , and she wasn’t going to make that easy. I’m just glad she made it...and you still have an apartment.🖤🇨🇦
@@tamarrajames3590 All the bats there are newly in care at Merryn's aviary; they're all fairly stressed and not very relaxed, especially while we were both in the cage.

So wonderful to see Banshee in a quieter mood and not calling you all those foul names! I was beginning to wonder if she wasn't just trying some things out for good measure to get your reaction. Meg you do such great job. I'm a rehabber in Illinois. I know babies bats are having problems. This is wonder that she doing do well. When I have alot of death it's so hard for me. Girl I think u r great the way u keep going!!!
Thanks Erin, I won't pretend that it hasn't been hard, that most of the bats I've rescued in the last 12 months haven't survived. I expect it to change at some stage so I'm just hanging in there, hoping the next or the next will survive the death time.
It's not just the juvies who are having problems - it's also the adults who seem to be affected in the same way.
@@Megabattie OH, sorry to hear the adults are affected as well. A regular natural disaster for animals. I so hope the investigating scientists can offer explanations soon.
Oh no Erin .. in the states baby bats are having problems also ? I have been wondering if the ones here were But we had no bushfires . Well there were fires in some places I’ve wondered if that had an effect on the moms not getting enough good nourishment for the babies when they were small and nursing . Surely the mystery will be solved soon . It’s so sad and heartbreaking these deaths are happening so much . Are they trying to investigate here in the states ?

It's always a wonderful thing when animals can be with their own kind. I'm happy to see all these gorgeous bats together and calm and safe.

There was other interesting stuff too. Not just all about the critters you know? First thing that's usually mentioned. All the wildlife. Most of which I also love and wish to see in person.😍🐾

I'm so glad she's showing improvement, I was really afraid for her (Oh , me of little faith!).
Well with my record for the last 12 months, with so few survivors, I didn't even think she was going to make it.

Banshee is adorable and so glad to see she is progressing nicely. Given some time with the other bats should eventually bring her around and she'll be comfortable. 15 years ago II didn't think about bats - they existed, they flew at night, and they hung upside down - that's all I really knew - plus a few other things, but I didn't have any personal experience with them.
Things have changed, and it's been a steep learning curve and the beginning of an obsession with bats.
I actually joined wildlife rescue to care for parrot chicks win spring chick season - and someone ended up doing bats exclusively

I think about Ole Banshee from time to time. She was quite the handful and very vocal but we love the Batty's one and all

She was tense because we were still in the aviary, but we were watching her hanging and trying to see if she had pain anywhere.

Someone suggested that when I rescued her she was so concussed she was seeing double, and she really only hates one of me but she can't figure out which one. I'm not taking it personally, specially as she's doing so well now.
But I had to take her for an X-ray a few days later and she screamed at me again so I really do think it's me.

Mostly I'm a genius with names, but sometimes I fall down.
You did a fantastic job with the Banshee from Hell Meg - and I know she'd thank you if she wasn't such a bloody grump, lol! Seriously, great job - can't have been easy with all that noise going on in your apartment at nights, worrying about neighbours etc.
It was minimal noise but with maximum volume. When you consider she could have kept up the rage when she was covered, in which case I'd have had to put her down in the car - she was just stressed and cranky at me if I looked at her or tried to touch her.

Great, there she is, a lot less stressed than before :-). Maybe Banshee still deals with a major headache from her crash landing.
Those wrist injuries on the other two bats look very painful. Are they? Or is there just fresh tissue that's already healing?
They're partly healed - bound to be netting injuries because that's what they do. If you dress them, the bats chew off the dressings, so sometimes it's just easier to clean them daily if required and let them lick them and attend to their own healing.

Well she's convinced that I'm evil and I want to cook and eat her, but otherwise she's not convinced about the goodness of her being in care.

It's too late for her to be hard released. Unless she's ready to go tomorrow. She'll go out through the release aviary if Merryn thinks she's still recovering neurologically.

Actually, they don't. These are wild bats, not bats in permanent care. They're wild bats and they are getting their socialisation from the other bats while they're healing and getting stronger for release.
Toys don't factor into their lives in the wild, and aren't factored in while they're in rehab.
Permanent care bats play with new things in the aviary because this is their life - interacting with humans.
Make no mistake they would prefer to be out in the wild with the skies and trees as their playground.
She might have ptsd from some prior experience.

@@suelovescats yes, that is why Maggie's work is so important- for me, I've just fallen in 💕 with the batties and for my birthday one of my presents was being able to donate to Meggie and Tolga bat hospital. Humans don't realize that the bats actually pollinate their fruit trees and help grow new ones by excreting the seeds!!!!😄 Humans keep fucking with nature. And yeah the poor batties have PTSD , we need more Meggies in this world. She understands their role in the ecosystem and respects them. They actually help grow more fruit trees, dude!!! So humans can profit....
