Is THE CENTRE the described "ancient horror on Earth" that Hal Jordan & John Stewart learn about when investigating a murder in Sherrif Kelley's town? The very same town which has secrets emerging from the community... With one of the described main antagonists being a 'conspiracy minded' man, possibly linking to The Centre cult? Not forgetting that Gunn has stated that Lanterns 'plays a really big role *in the main story* ' in the DCU... Lots to discuss here, would love to hear your thoughts!
@@strozombie.01 I don’t think the Centre would be in the heart land since it lives in the Pacific Ocean if I remember correctly, but its cult might have members in the heart land, since it has a psychic link that allows it to take over being like Martian manhunter I just don’t remember how far it’s link can extend.
@@BobaTalks if it's not that I think it would be very safe to surmise that is something VERY similar to that. Personally I would not be angry about that at all.
The intriguing thing about The Centre being the "big bad" is that there are so many aspects to the entity, that certain aspects of it could appear across different DCU projects while still matching the individual tone of each film or show: Dinosaurs maybe popping up in Creature Commandos, a Kaiju in Superman, a sacrificial cult in Lanterns, some straight up eldritch horror in Swamp Thing. It could actually be portrayed as something truly terrifying - I'm thinking a bit less 50s sci-fi and more Lovecraftian or like Dean Koontz's Phantoms. Another thing to keep in mind regarding Creature Commandos, Dinosaur Island (aka The Centre) was the testing ground for the creation of the G.I. Robots back in WW2, and we know we're getting a G.I. Robot flashback of the war in the show.
The Centre would be a good villain for the first villain for the Justice League. It's kinda like how the white martians brought the JL together in the DCAU.
IMO The Centre is a great Big Bad for Chapter 1. Meta-Humans and aliens fighting dinosaur type creatures would be pretty dope to see on screen if done correctly. Sounds like we might get some teases of this type of threat in Creature Commandos and SUPERMAN if rumors are true. Not to mention the cult like description of one of the antagonists in Lanterns. Just feels like this particular scoop/rumor is true. Definitely gives the title Gods & Monsters credence.
This is very interesting and seems to hint at a pretty dark tone to at least part of the Gunnverse. "Ancient horror" is a strong word. It seems like hes going to have this impending feeling of doom that not most fans arent going to know what or who it is but is coming. I think this is a very, very cool idea instead of just going with the MCUs Thanos Gauntlet storyline. I think a massive kaiju that cant throw creatures and who the hell knows what else could be terrifying especially if it comes across as the unstoppable force. I mean if the MCU can have a giant fart cloud eating people this giant kaiju island can work if the groundwork is solid.
Gods and Monsters-I love a good old fashioned sentient island. Wouldn't mind THE CENTRE having a connection to Tyrannko, the All-Star Superman Dino-Czar. And DCU villains will attempt to exploit the Centre and its followers, even members of the Legion of Doom. The mix of weird SF and "grounded" could feel new.
So I think there’s definitely substance to this and I can see Gunn going with this kind of villain to be honest. I need to watch The New Frontier, been so long
I remember watching you talk about potential DCU Big Bads. Crazy how time flies. Like feels like we got the teaser of the suit and now they have been done filming for months, just wild.
I wonder if Ras knows anything about the Centre or its cult? Like could Damian's introduction also bring the World's Greatest Detective closer to the truth of the Centre?
I mean, the name of act one being 'God's and monsters' could literally be a reference to the Centre. The centre is an ancient being (almost eldritch god?) And the Centre is the home of literally monsters!
Another case that the Centre could be the Ancient Horror is that America’s Heartland consist of the Midwestern States like Iowa which is in the middle or more appropriately The Center.
James Gunn cooked with his overarching plot: -Center is the big bad and can be portraid in a variety of ways to match the tone of each property. It is also a somewhat terrestrial level threat and they can escalate in future chapters not just "aliens everywhere" like Marvel. -The reverse "Kingdom Come" is a great comentary on the oversaturation of the market with dark and cynical superhero content. Supermen is the first to break the mold and then others will follow suit and maybe even form Justice League International to face The Authority in a battle of different philosophies. -Let every show/movie and game have their own self-contained story that is easy to follow, while also fitting smoothly into the bigger jigsaw puzzle that is "The DCU Continuity". -They will also mention/redo every plot point kept from the previous continuity (DCEU), so no homework for anybody. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
you know what, YES! i agree and believe the cult of the center having something to do with the ancient horror in the LANTERNS is very plausible. however i also believe the center itself is going to be used more like a first JUSTICE LEAGUE team up movie villain/threat, much like in the NEW FRONTIER animated movie. Not so much a chapter-ending threat, but rather the first JUSTICE LEAGUE level threat we get in the DCU.
I think having the Legion of Doom, with Lex Luthor as the primary threat, would be a fascinating twist. It would break away from the usual formula of a single all-powerful antagonist, a fresh and unique approach. At least build them up so they can be the big bad for the next saga.
The Centre is not my favorite villain I would personally rather see Braniac , but I am okay with this and I kind of thought from the beginning we might get the Centre since this is up James Gunns alley being an obscure villain like Starro.
Brainiac would be ideal as the DCU's "big bad" for Phase 2 once the Justice League has been better established. The team will need to be ALOT more coordinated in order to take him on.
Another thing to think about is the Threats (From The Center) are more 'Existential' similar to Richard Donner's Superman Movie Where Lex Luthor threw One Problem After Another Problem at Superman (which Tested his Resolve and Character) But if Done Right, Will Raise the Stakes of Stories!
I one hundred percent believe it will end up being The Centre. Based on what we know thus far, it makes to much sense. Personally i don’t love the idea. Im not writing it off either though. Im far far to excited for this DCU for that. Mainly i don’t know how the idea of whoever in the end fighting a sentient island transfers to the big screen. The in between could be amazing with the cult and the Centre’s ability to possess and control other villains possibly. I know James can handle this for sure, he already did Ego, but even then its different because its more cosmic and its in space. One character i am really hoping we get in the DCU is Ray Palmer. Knowing they use Ray’s technology against the Centre in the story i would love to see a great Ray Palmer in the DCU. I’ll wait and see how this is handled. It could be awesome even if it wouldn’t be one of my picks.
Thanks for all your work bro. The Center is absolutely the perfect villain for Chapter 1. It's right up Gunn's wheelhouse and will set DC apart from prime MCU. By the way, goodluck on the upcoming nuptials.
peacemaker showed us a tremendous amount of comic book level threats mixed with humor, mystery and heroics. we cared about the characters too. this is a great mystery and also one that opens up the universe to other opportunist like Luthor, brainiac, Darkseid, parallax etc
I feel it can work if the threats posed unfold in the way Young Justice unfolded The Reach's threats. As a kid, that really used to leave me tense lol. Even recently when I rewatched the first 2 seasons, it felt really good, obviously due to the nostalgia factor, but also due to the fact that it was just so well done.
"The Center" is the perfect big bad for Phase 1. You have to remember, that even though all of these heroes have existed already for some time before the events of the DCU's first outing, the Justice League, and how they operate together hasn't. They need a villain that demands they work together despite none of them ever having done so before, but not a villain that demands all of them at their collective best/ peak their first time around. As the Justice League progresses, they'll adapt, and become more, and more coordinated. And when they do they'll continue to grow together as a team, and be better, and better prepared for bigger, and more complex threats when, and as they present themselves. Such as "Brainiac", for example.
It’s pretty obvious considering the slate of a group of random characters. They’ll all come together to fight the Centre. Also the Lanterns synopsis reminds me of the plot of that one episode of Green lantern the animated series where Hal goes back to earth to discover a new lantern. They team up to find a missing person who was revealed to be murdered by Manhunters hidden on earth for hundreds of years.
I would say that Nekron works better as the ancient horror from Earth, that means Black Hand will be the main villain of Lanterns. I think Chapter One will end with Justice League Final Crisis, which takes place after the storyline The Brave and the Bold is taking inspiration from. In order to do a Blackest Night storyline Batman needs to be killed by Darkseid. So DCU Chapter One Gods and Monsters ending will be Justice League Final Crisis, then DCU Chapter Two will end with Justice League Blackest Night.
Black Hand isn't the main villain of Lanterns, its the Centre. You gotta build to Black Hand, establish all of the Earth GL's, all of the Lantern corps characters, all of the Lantern lore like the Entities, the Guardians, the prophecy, etc and they have to establish DC heroes that can fill every Lantern corp role. We have too much to establish for chapter 1 where we're also establishing every character in the DCU and the world of the DCU.
After watching this video I feel less hopeful off what they do from the comics because for me Superman being hopeful and bright is enough for me to be happy about an entire dcu. I also want other character to be done faithfully. I don’t want any crazy changes , like making things less like a comic book. And less like its source . Not respecting the comics were literally the complaints about Zach Snyder films.
Of course they will be very comics faithful but adaptations into live action always provide innovation so if this does ever turn out to be true... Hal and John looking/stumbling across the Centre mystery first rather than Batman and Manhunter would be an example of that. It doesn't really ruin the story, it just offers a different execution.
I mean as much as goofy it might sound they can just adapt the centre in a little bit different way and treat him like cthulu and turn it into a complete horrific monster
I’m very excited for the Lanterns show, probably the most out of all the projects announced. That being said, I can’t shake the feeling that using 2 Green Lanterns as protagonists and instead of putting them in space, have them solve a mystery in some small town in the US, seems like a missed opportunity
Man one of the priorities for the DCU for me is that ALL the different LANTERN CORPS are being introduced into this universe at some point being the anchor of an EPIC cosmic side?! 🤔🙏😢 Ofc there are some other hopes and wishes too but this is definitely one of them! 🙏
I loved the New Frontier animated movie and I'd lose my mind if we got The Centre it's unlike anything we've ever seen in Love Action it's unique and it's fun, it's honestly probably one of the things I want to see the most
Thanks for the video Boba. I like the idea of the centre and the opportunity of the potential link into a Swamp Thing movie that’s connective to everything else, and nothing does real horror well like Swamp Thing
I think it possibly would, if we go off the potential cult in the small town in the Lanterns series and that character casting I cover... They could be communicating via psychic link/telepathy
At first I thought the main villain of The DCU was going to be The Centre with a New Frontier adaptation, now I think the main villain is going to be Imperiex with a New Frontier adaptation.
The art of Corenswet's Superman on the right side of this thumbnail is tremendous, by the way. That's what it will look like in the movie, too. We saw BTS of Ezra Miller from 'The Flash' and their suit was super baggy (especially for a superhero costume). In the theatrical cut that was all touched up. The same will be done for the supersuits in this movie.
Hey Boba since we know there will be a Batfamily in the DCU I'm curious, how many members do you think there will be? I'm personally thinking about 3 (excluding Alfred and maybe excluding Damian). Love your vids btw
Also the three that I would choose and can see happening are Nightwing (obviously), Batgirl (I feel like she wouldn't need as much training) and perhaps Jason Todd (still as robin or maybe dead and if he does come back there could be a jealousy factor about Batman getting a new robin).
James Gunn confirmed Damien. And in a Twitter post he kind of confirmed Cassandra Cain and Dick Grayson. If Dynamic Duo is canon we could confirm Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
@@khizeryusufzai2185 yes I know Damian will be in it, I'm hoping it will kind of in a way be a story about his journey but the thing is these days in the comics it seems like there's 100 people who know Batman's identity, the Batfamily is huge. Personally I'm a bigger fan of the more close-knit Batfamily so I'm hoping they'll go with the latter.
The centre, for me, is exactly what the DCU needs to differentiate themselves from Marvel. That climax would be the best ending in a comic book movie ever. Even over the endgame battle. The sheer lovecraftian horror is what I CRAVE
with the black lanterns thing, it kind of feels like all these d tier heros he is adding in is kinda building up to kill them off to be resurrected in blackest night. all these characters like frankensteins monster and the authority and stuff were in blackest night as zombies, as well as mr terrific being a big main hero to try and science some stuff to stop it. hal jordan being so old could mean barry has been built up and killed off before this all and so he comes back just before blackest night goes down like in the comics. as well as the cult town in lanterns could have william hand amongst the cult.
I feel bad for some of these marvel fans that are used to seeing the man of tomorrow fight a real estate mogul. finally we get some real superfeats! doing a huge kaiju monster isn't scary to a director like James gunn. he can do kaiju threats and tiny racoon stories that have just as much impact in the story too
See here’s the thing, the Gunn haters are constantly stating that they won’t stick around for his “bright and family friendly garbage” but not only has Gunn said each project will have its own tone but the synopsis for Lanterns literally sounds like a crime drama with sci-fi thrown in. Not to mention it’ll be an hbo show, it probably won’t be as bright and bubbly as maybe Superman, but that’s also the point that some people fail to see. Superman is a bright and optimistic character, while John Stewart and Hal are more serious characters. So their tones will be different, and hopefully if done right, that’s what will set them apart from the MCU. The DCU doesn’t have to be all dark and gritty for it to stand out from Marvel
i thought Garrets casting meant Black Hand, and i’m still riding that theory. i think his name is actually William and not Dillon. idk if there’s a way to connect Black Hand to the Centre, but if we get the Centre we’re getting peak edit: i commented right before u mentioned Black Hand. now i look silly.
Yeah turns out I had the codename in my head from before he officially joined the show, so it is indeed William. As for Black Hand... Idk. It feels more applicable from where I'm standing to make an 'ancient horror on earth' to be that of The Centre. I don't really see the rift to Nekron being located on Earth either, but pehaps one could argue that a rift could be opened. I know I always say adaptations don't copy and paste but I can't imagine Blackest Night unfolding like this - it seems more logical for an ancient horror to be some primordial threat which has some cult following from various humans that are unified in the vision to end humanity as they view us as destroying the planet (idk lol)
@ i definitely think the Centre is way more likely right now than Black Hand, but i gotta go down with the ship with my theory. if the dcu ever adapts Blackest Night tho… 😤😤
I'm not sure how I feel about seeing Kaiju's Fighting with Superman in this first film on top of everything else going on in the movie. Plus, I know I'm going to get a bunch a hate for this, but I don't really want Krypto in the first one either. I know, I know. That's blasphemy when it comes to Superman. I was just hoping to get more of a Superman centric story (which I'm sure most of it still will be) but, we'll have to see how it all turns out on release day. And the trailers HAVE to slap! They HAVE to be really good, or people are going to be skeptical and talking shit right off the bat. (no pun intended) So even if it takes a month to cut that first teaser, just make sure that shit gives us all goosebumps! If he can do that, we'll be in business.
I think the main villain should be V. Savage and he controls the other bad guys from behind and we get small teases with him and when they eventually beat them or lose to them it then leads to Darkseid
Other villains for a JL movie in the distant future that would be cool are Brainiac (was hoping he appears in Superman and is a recurring villain like Loki in the MCU), Legion of Doom or the NEW REICHSMEN but the last one definitely won't happen?! 🤔
Highly, highly recommend anyone who hasn't to read New Frontier, especially the newer paperback editions with the additional special issue. Or at least watch the animated movie which is one of the best adaptations that stays true to the comic even with the time constraints. It's Darwyn Cooke's Magnum Opus. Honestly, Kingdom Come is #2 to me while New Frontier is #1 when it comes to DC Universe-wide comic epics.
The New Frontier is one of DC's greatest stories and it has an animated movie adaptation and its pretty new, only about 25 years old. That's not very obscure.
@Cloudy_Games_99 Tighter in the sense it's not bunching up anywhere and it gives a cpt America type suit. No it's not form fitting showing off muscles but it gives off the physique of a strong guy. Also the colors look fantastic!
As for Chapter 1 I truly look through the lens of the described 'ancient horror on earth' when thinking about the candidates, and for me, that rules out Darkseid being 'the big bad' for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
We gotta build to Darkseid and Fourth World. That will be much easier after chapter one because we'll probably be done establishing the characters and world of the DCU. Plus fighting and defeating Darksied off the bat is what ruined the DCEU, the New 52 and the DCAMU. Eventually, Darkseid got his wins back in the DCAMU but it's just not smart to castrate the most OP villain immediately because where do they go from there? I guess the Anti-monitor but that's a universe ending event and we gotta get to at least Chapter 5 before we do that.

The main villain is going to be the same one from Justice league the new frontiers cartoon movie
Can we give the Center a voice actor? Like Ego the Living Planet? If any reason because I'm not sure what its motivation is
I think it possibly would, if we go off the potential cult in the small town in the Lanterns series and that character casting I cover... They could be communicating via psychic link/telepathy
@@BobaTalks Okay, that's a better story idea
At first I thought the main villain of The DCU was going to be The Centre with a New Frontier adaptation, now I think the main villain is going to be Imperiex with a New Frontier adaptation.
The art of Corenswet's Superman on the right side of this thumbnail is tremendous, by the way.
That's what it will look like in the movie, too.
We saw BTS of Ezra Miller from 'The Flash' and their suit was super baggy (especially for a superhero costume).
In the theatrical cut that was all touched up.
The same will be done for the supersuits in this movie.
I guess Boba will definitely be slipping in a bathroom to watch a trailer on his wedding.
The center = Cthulhu
with the black lanterns thing, it kind of feels like all these d tier heros he is adding in is kinda building up to kill them off to be resurrected in blackest night. all these characters like frankensteins monster and the authority and stuff were in blackest night as zombies, as well as mr terrific being a big main hero to try and science some stuff to stop it. hal jordan being so old could mean barry has been built up and killed off before this all and so he comes back just before blackest night goes down like in the comics. as well as the cult town in lanterns could have william hand amongst the cult.
I think you're spot on Boba! Love this
I'm finally getting to this just as you post a new one lol
I know James Gunn is gonna cook with this Universe, I’m more interested in the castings then the plot leaks foreal 😂 bring on the content
This makes a lot of sense
I hope the centre is the big bad for chapter 1. It sounds dark and cultish and I’m so down for that since we haven’t seen that in live action
Also, in New Frontier doesn’t Hal Jordan basically sacrifice himself to defeat the Centre and save everyone? I can see Kyle Chandler doing that!
James Gunn is cooking with the greatest ingredients!!!!
i thought Garrets casting meant Black Hand, and i’m still riding that theory. i think his name is actually William and not Dillon. idk if there’s a way to connect Black Hand to the Centre, but if we get the Centre we’re getting peak
edit: i commented right before u mentioned Black Hand. now i look silly.
@austindanibels4827 you are crazy for BN
It's not gonna get for 30years
@@Abhinav-m4o it will probably never happen, all i’m saying is if it did, it’d be peak cinema
This would be a very great idea.
Im kinda hoping they make the Centre an eldritch horror similar to Cthulhu.
Anyone saying the Centre is a lame villain is just not a DC fan and they should sit down and shut up while Gunn cooks
I don’t want him to lean to much on obscure characters but he should blend them in with the mainstream characters like Darkside
The New Frontier is one of DC's greatest stories and it has an animated movie adaptation and its pretty new, only about 25 years old.
That's not very obscure.
U can't have that
We probably will have Darkseid but he’ll be more of a villain for like a third film
It has the Vibes of Cthulhu Lovecraft, an Unknown Malicious Entity that takes the form of an 'Island' recking Havoc on Humanity :)
I don't get how you can get hyped about superman fighting dinosaurs when we had him almost fight darkseid with Henry
Gunn made the Guardians go up against a living planet. This is his style.
If it's not the centre I could see them worshipping Trigon or Darkseid as a ancient threat, I know it sounds basic but could see it.
I see what u did there 🤣 8:20
Lovecraftian C'Thulu Cult vibes!
Idk about the big bad ..but I do feel like that "ultraman" character might become Bizzaro
This is exactly what I would've expected from gunn.
8:14 is it me or does the suit look great here?
I totally see it, maybe it looks tighter?
@Cloudy_Games_99 Tighter in the sense it's not bunching up anywhere and it gives a cpt America type suit. No it's not form fitting showing off muscles but it gives off the physique of a strong guy. Also the colors look fantastic!
I just want to see Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl as one of the founding members of the League
@CarlosAndres-tq9sc same as me
Darkseid would be a nice villain to bring because his obsession with the anti-life equation is legend.
He will be a a very grateful chapter 2 villian
As for Chapter 1 I truly look through the lens of the described 'ancient horror on earth' when thinking about the candidates, and for me, that rules out Darkseid being 'the big bad' for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.
Dude no. Darkseid being the main villain has been done to death
The legion of Doom are better and more interesting.
3:20 otherwise known as an "Ancient Horror"???!!!
James Gunn movies.. make sure theirs a giant monster to fight..
Is there velositol in it
Honestly, if the Center wants to get rid of humanity, so be it. That island is the good guy lmao
Great stuff
Is there a possibility that the big bad ancient treat villain is vandal savage?
