Every time you give us a thumbs up a Narwhal gets its horn! (maybe..)
Dragons, acromantulas and giants are all described as being quite strong against spells and curses, so really the Qilin surviving two killing curses did not surprise me at all when I saw it.
Same, spells and curses bounced right off of Hagrid
Yeah i think that way as well like i don't think you could kill a dragon with one avada kedavra. I imagine it to be similar to stupor where only a very powerful spell or many less powerful spells need to be combined to have the same effect on this powerful magical beasts. I think if Grindelwald really wanted to kill it with the curse i think he could have done it because he is mich more powerful and posses the elderwand. Although i like the idea that those type of beasts have a special protection because of the whole purity of heart thing
@@RandomCuber115 I remember in the book it was said that a dragon required about a dozen stunning spells to be taken down.
Yup same here
@@robertgronewold3326 yeah to the face at the same time
Avada Kedavra does not always result in a kill even if it hits. If the caster is not powerful or experienced enough, it may cause no more than a nosebleed, for example (as Crouch Jr. explains). So, there are several degrees of effects possible.
I was going to mention that, too. The skill of the individual wizard may be a factor. For instance, a powerful enough wizard might be able to conjure fiendfire, but not skilled enough to control it.
Yeah there are some spells that either it works or it doesn't but there's other spells that have an effect gradient based on how skilled you are like for instance the patronus charm that if you're not very skilled won't do jack s*** if you're skilled enough and focused enough you can make essentially a formless shield but if you've got very good skill and a very good strong good memory you can make the corporal patronus which has your spirit animal and you can even send messages through it like Kingsley telling the people that Bill's wedding that the ministers dead the ministry has fallen they're coming
There is also the desire to kill. You need to mean it whole heartedly and without a doubt or the spell won't work as intended
@@thomask.8282 yes remember when Bellatrix Lestrange said to Harry about Avada Kedavra "you have to really mean it" "righteous anger wont do it", to when Harry was chasing them.
Yeah that makes sense, it’s surprising to me that Harry is the only one to survive it then though. Is he the only to survive a “full force” Avada Kedavra then? That always confused me
J referencing Scott Sterling is the best thing I've heard in a while. It makes me ridiculously happy that he has seen those videos.
I like this theory
But I think some magical animals just have a really high magical tolerance. It takes more than 100 wizards to take down a Nundu, and I'm sure that at least some of them would have used the killing curse
Great video 😊
Pls help what'a a nundu
@@fireblow44 the spiky puffy necked lion thing you see in Fantastic Beasts 1 ( I think that's the movie )
@@fireblow44 nundu yo business dog

Came here to mention the Nundu, happy to see someone else already has. :D
Fun fact; Qilin, or Kirin in Japanese, are considered to be the unicorns of the east.
Yes, and they're auspicious symbols of good leadership to the point that the giraffe that emperor Zhu Di was gifted in the 1400s was called a qilin
They're also giraffes, fun fact
Oh wow that's cool, they also appear in the Monster Hunter series and they do look like unicorns. Never knew there was this kind of correlation
i mean, the japanese kirin looks nothing like a unicorn. there like a dragon/horse hybrid thing
Mama was hit with the curse not once, but TWICE... And, just a thought, I'm thinking Grindelwald HAD to kill it that way so he could see what the calf saw IN the blood for a glimpse into the future, like a pensieve of sorts.
Agreed. I thought blood had to be spilled for that same reason.
I'm not convinced that was related in any way to the vision, which was probably just his own clairvoyance, but it's possible he needed the blood specifically for the necromancy later which appeared to involve resanguinating the calf.
I, too, originally thought the qilin's blood revealed the future, but that was Grindelwald's powers of divination revealing snatches of the future, thew same we he sees the future in the window at Nurmengard, the car window, and the pool.
@@JosephDaviesif he was already a good all-around Diviner and hydromancer, it’s not a big leap to other types of scrying.
Didn't we already even see her protective power in action? I'm pretty sure the second twin was still inside of her when she was hit with those spells. I agree the duress could have weakened her own protection but she still protected the baby.
I think any mother could probably do that though, living shields seem quite useful against the killing curse, as seen with Fawkes in the ministry battle.
I think that only counts if you chose to die for someone when you don’t really have to - the self sacrifice. Even if they’re sentient enough to make that choice (and they might be), she never had a choice in the matter
@@annegasko7719 I think this is a different kind of protection. Not a love based shield, instead a shield with the physical body.
@@emilia935 oh right, sorry, I misunderstood your first comment! My mistake :)
I think your right that's why she shed a tear befor she died and she only died after seeing the surviving twin 😢
I thought that was supposed to show Credence didn’t really want to kill them so the curse wasn’t as effective.
There are three requirements of a spell to work: magical power (not all wizards are capable of casting spells to the same degree,) intent (you have to *want* to cast the spell) and line of sight (most clearly demonstrated when Quirrell's curse was obstructed during the Quidditch game is Philosopher's Stone.) Avada Kedavra in particular, requires killing intent, as Belletrix explains that cruciatus curse, you have to *want* in pain (or for the purposes of Avada Kevavra, dead. Non of the protags display that intention, they might benefit from Voldemort's death, maybe even seek it but none *desire* it, an important distinction for spellwork.)
Line of sight isn't strictly necessary. Take Apparition for example. You definitely don't have a line of sight to the target, but you're still able to do it. I believe that constant eye contact was a particular requirement for the curse Quirrell was using.
i think its just specifically hexes that require a line of sight.
@@CHLOCHLOLP hexes are just charms with a malevolent/ill effect. Some may require line of sight, but not in general
I wonder if a qilin as a patronus has ever been conjured...
Great question!
I would assume the witch/wizard themselves would have to be extremely pure of heart to conjure a qilin patronus
I guess the closest to a fantastic beast patronus we've seen so far is Albus' phoenix.
@@giannagarda7598 Not so sure about that. Constance Pickering's patronus was a unicorn, and there have been dragon patronuses as well.
@@Skjeggeskall yeah ik aa month later, but bruuuuuh a dragon patronus would be SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK to see, even if it's a little mushu dragon.
13:05 I thought it was because avada kedavra doesn’t spill blood, while cutting the qillin’s throat would, so if it didn’t spill blood grindy wouldn’t be able to see the vision he sees in the blood
My thoughts as well
Theoretically, you could stop it with that serpensortia spell Malfoy used against Harry in book 2. Create snake, snake hit spell, spell and snake gone. And this probably applies to conjuring like, physical objects (chairs and stuff) from thin air in the way of the spell, cause wouldn’t the spell just bounce off/destroy those too? Like the desk in voldy v dumbledore book 5?
Yeah, I believe the "no blocking" purely extends to magical blocking, any physical object should work
@@DarthAxolotl those all seem like magic counters to me that could’ve/should’ve been used against him and the death eaters the whole time. So basically, unblockable means… works against shield charms and that’s all? Kind of overhyped I’d say.
Hmmm... what about cutting off the caster's hand with Diffindo? No hand, no wand, no spell.
Alternatively, mirrors?
The snake spell (and Ginny or Hermione did a bird spell) sounds very useful. As do massive objects like statues and gravestones. So yea, it's unlockable by spells directly.
The wizarding world doesn't seem to be very good in research; although, how do you research blocking the killing curse.
We as audience have the luxury to be around a lot of killing curse moments and learn from them
Although, again, Dumbledore just does a lot of them. And if I was a Deatheater I would experiment with it, to have security against Voldemort
I wonder what would happen if AK hits a Patronus 😲
Today, I was thinking that the similarities between Harry's sacrifice in the end, and Dumbledore breaking the blood pact.
In both situations there was the avada Kedavra cast by the elder wand by one side and the sheer will to protect someone else from the other side.
This makes me think that the relation between Harry an Voldemort was a similar dark version of the pact between Dumbledore and Grindelwald
The explanation of defending yourself with object is pretty simple in my eyes: if the object isn't touching you, it will take the full force of the killing curse, which will then expire (the statues); if you are holding the object, there is a good chance that the curse will run through it and still get to you (clothes).
I’m gonna hold a jacket to throw in the air /j
Avada Kadavra doesn’t always kill, Moody (actually crouch) explains this in the books. Also in “secrets of dumbledore” they don’t say which curse they are using, it’s just green light, and other curses cast a green light… And Ron’s “eat slugs” curse cast a green light 🤷🏻♀️
"Your gonna pay for that one Mawfow *ron pulls out his wand* EAT SLUGS *Bleh* "
Just saw the secrets of Dumbledore yesterday I really enjoyed it. I love your theory videos !
Really?
Saw it today, loved it
How? Which part was exactly enjoyable?
I was just happy it ended so the torture would stop.
@@ashkanpower oof, who shat in your cornflakes? Who hurt you?
@@ashkanpower you dnt like it dnt watch it it’s pretty simple
During the triwizard tournament they say that it takes about 50 spells to stun a dragon, maybe the Avada Kedavra is also similar in this manner
no it's 8 that were used and Avada Kadavra is more powerful it's unblockable
The problem is your theories make more sense than the actual plot. I think they need to hire you guys.
The problem is that he's a white straight male
True
They don't. They really don't.
So true
fun fact - a qilin(also known as kirin) is basically the Chinese version of the unicorn. It is said its rare appearance often coincides with the imminent birth or death of a sage or illustrious ruler. It is said to be so benevolent that it never harms any living thing and when it walks, no blade of grass is bent and no insect is crushed beneath its hoof
"Oh, it's beyond special. See its eyes? Those eyes see everything. When a qilin is born, a righteous leader will rise to change the world forever." - Gellert Grindelwald
Different variations in the historical records of Qilin myth have one horn or two. So one-horned qilin are the equivalent 😊
Don't forget that the chilen was hit twice with the killing curse, before eventually dying
I was surprised they didn't mention this part. I think it's probably important that it took two killing curses to cause it to die, and even then not immediately.
Perhaps body mass plays a part. The grown qilin appears to be similar in body mass to an ox or adolescent giraffe (much larger than a human). This is just a guess as we've never seen the Killing Curse used against something larger than a human before that movie.
Honestly, aurors should run around with a Riot shield or at least a knights shield.
I think the Fred and George are selling somekind of magical shields comparbale to that and other products.
9:53 I died 😂
(I lowkey want a full version)
Hi! As always: loved you theory! I like the idea that love still is the counter "action" for the course. Maybe the mom's love for the unborn child protected her. Maybe she knew that it would not survive if she died, that's why she made it through childbirth and was able to hold on a little longer...
Question...how could the wedding happen? It's being held in America, the laws haven't been changed, Jacob is still a Muggle...this was a subplot of the first two movies which leads to conflict for the secondary characters. 🤔 Just confused.
Jacob and Queenie probably had a muggle wedding, meaning they'd be legally married in the state of new york but have likely not said anything about it to the MACUSA. With Tina being the head of the auror office now it probably won't be a big deal as long as they don't go around talking about it.
That was my first question about the movie as well. It is possible that the law has changed, but any dialogue about it was cut from the script. I really wish the author had written this series as books rather than screenplays!
I'm glad. Its easier to say that the books are cannon and the movies are not. I'd have to do all kinds of mental gymnastics to exclude the FB movies if they were also books.
It's clearly a secret wedding, as it's being held in a bakery and only attended by close friends. The fact that the head of the US Aurors was in attendance is living a bit dangerously, though, both for the marriage and her career.
I assumed there may have been a small time skip and that Santos, the new ruler of the wizarding world, might have heard their case after they helped and gotten them some kinda special permission, if not somehow changed the American law all together
Now I want to make D&D campaign where the big bad evil guy has done something like this to survive an uncounterable curse and set himself up as a false "chosen one."
Did you
I have a thought about getting the scales of the Qilan. Ask for them. I am sure a Pure of Heart person can ask for some scales to be then made into armor. And think Shed scales could have the same properties
It would be a nice thematic element if they lose effectiveness when subjected to the curse, so a truly protective pelt could only be had by asking, not taking.
I totally agree
This is actually a huge element in many other stories. This super powerful magical beast can give you this awesome power, and the bad guy hunts them for it. But the good guy finds the beast first and the beast goes "you're amazing. I will give you this power."
Shadow and Bone, ATLA, even bowtruckles do this. It's in some of the old mythologies too.
@@multitudeofvoices Exactly!
@@multitudeofvoices If you count the Mirror or Erised, that's essentially what it's enchanted to do, too given that only someone who didn't intend to use the Stone was able to retrieve it from the Mirror.
Ben for Kvothe!🧙🏻♂️🗡 J for Elodin!🗡🧙🏻♂️I think my favorite new fantastic beast is the Qilin. I wish they would do an updated fantastic beasts book with these new creatures included, but I think I also agree with your headcanon that Newt deliberately left some beasts out because they’re so rare. Also loved that Scott Sterling reference!😂
Solid object selectively blocking the curse is funny thing given phrase 'avada kedavra' roughly means 'let that *thing* be destroyed'. Also, Seamus Finnigan might be one of few wizards able to precisely control fiendfyre.
1:20 Yes; that often being what some call 'birthday suit', lolz
...
Spells are concentrated Aether; ultimately, if one can absorb Aether, they can block and absorb the spell, even one that powerful, and just as dirty. The one spell that would accomplish ceasing of life functionality? *_Talaruda._* It summons the wrath of *_Talamiura,_* Governess of Death/Darkness. It's a powerful spell, and will end any life, even non-sentient.
I mean, if you're doing a cross-universe, interfranchise, meta bit of storytelling, sure.
We need a full rap of chillin from J cause that small rap had me vibing
Does Avada Kedavra kill Dragons? With their scales i'd think they'd have a good chance at not being affected. The Qilin hide looks similar to a dragons.
Askimg the real questions here!
I was waiting for you to bring up the unicorn curse that's exactly what I think! Surely killing a qilin and using its skin for armor is not looked fondly upon by karma 😂
if there's only one or two of these creatures alive at any given time, it makes me wonder if the mumma dies more because she's given birth and there's only a certain amount of them around at once, rather than the curse doing anything to her 🤔
SCOTT STERLING!!! I loved this reference
So, while we're scrutinizing Avada Kedavera in detail, maybe we should give some thought to what it actually does and doesn't actually do.
In Half-blood Prince, we learn of a potion from Slughorn, called Draft of Living Death. This creates a perpetual stasis which resembles death in every way except the affected is not subject to decomposition or physical injury. The effect is indefinite until dispelled by the antidote, upon the administration of which, the affected is apparently instantly restored to life.
At the end of Half-blood Prince, Dumbledore is Avada Kedavera'd. He falls from the parapet of the astronomy tower 100 feet to the rocky ground, but fails to become pavement pizza on impact. He is then entombed and lays in that tomb for over a year until at the end of Deathly Hallows part one Voldemort decides to rob his grave. When the tomb is opened, Dumbledore is shown to be completely intact, with no sign of decomposition whatsoever.
The similarity between the effects of Avada Kedavera and Draft of Living Death is stark. The curse seems to have actually been modeled after the potion. The only difference being, that no antidote or counter charm has ever been created to dispell Avada Kedavera.
But what if one was?
That's a really good point about Grindlewald using a knife when killin' the qilin.
Well, if a Qilin is covered in fur, then you can just harvest the fur, like how we harvest sheep wool.
And if it is scales, then it most likely sheds its scales.
Either of these methods would be a humane way to make, not armor, but a cloak. I sort of imagine it like the cloak of Drago Bloodfist in HTTYD 2, a cloak made of a material that can resist a powerful spell.
Ah yes, the Cloak of Visability. It doesn't make you invisible, but it protects you from death all the same...
I volunteer to work on a Quilin farm!☺️
No, I'm pretty sure you could make armor still. That's what scale armor is, after all (just not made of actual scales the majority of the time).
"You're a regular Scott Sterling" feels like such an old reference I love it
Only the early people get the nice fresh warm towels

The MAN; the MYTH; The LEGEND!
XD
What about just making armor out of gravestones? Slap some Wingardiums and some Leviosas on them and you have cheap, nonmagic death-curse shields.
ROFL. Wouldn't carrying the weight of heavy gravestones alone kill you? And you could conveniently perform your own burial at the same time!
I love how Jacob is considered an option to cast the spell at 9:17 ^^
I have quite an important question: is it really said, that the spell was the Killing Curse? Or it's just derived from the fact, that it produces a green jet of light? If the second option - how certain can we be, that it's the only spell with such characteristic?
Dumbledore said GG sought to kill, but of course that still isn't 100% solid proof.
Green is not used for any other spell in the wizarding world. It's a thematic decision.
@@robertgronewold3326 that's not confirmed in the books, and there's definitely the green sparks charm.
@@inkeriananas It's a safe bet if the only other known green spell is just a sparks charm, which no one is going to be using in combat.
Any chance that its being green is connected to Slytherin? It seemed like the 'fireworks' the wizards were casting into the sky during the election were the colors of the different houses. Well, at least I noticed several yellow ones from members of my house😉 and some green ones.
6:30 what if someone was to use wingardium leviosa to drag a physical object (a rock) infront of you to intercept the casters avada kedavra??
Probably she didn't die because of her hide. It is mentioned throughout the series that for example Dragons and Graphorns have very thick hides protected by some ancient magic (which we'll probably explore in Hogwarts Legacy) which makes a lot of spells useless against these creatures. That's why it takes more time and at least two spells to kill it. I think your theories are getting a bit to far fetched
This first popped to mind.
There is also that thing moody said about having to have more power, if the whole class pointed the wand at him and said avada kedavra , he wouldnt even get a nose bleed.
Quillin is obviously a very powerful magical creature so that in itself can be enough to dodge this "plothole"
I thought something like this, like correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Hagrid hit with the killing curse and it just knocked him out because of his Giant genetics? Even if I remembered incorrectly, I've been assuming something along these lines anyways which is why I was confused that others were confused about how the Qilin died. Plus the killing curse still killed it, it was just a delayed effect. Lol I didn't know it was gonna cause such strife. I just thought "oh what an interesting fantastic beast characteristic" and continued watching the movie without a 2nd thought about it XD
@@holliswoods actually, i think it wasnot killing curses, but actually stupefy. His giant blood kind of repelled it.
They really are grasping at straws nowadays
@@NeroLeMorte exactly, back in the days they had some really cool, believable theories. It's a shame really
Don't forget, albus dumbledoor blocks the spell when he seeks to protect his brothers son credence. And it breaks the blood pact... so, cool.
I'm saddened by their treatment of newt who previously we've seen be an exceptional wizard. not to mention his case is a practical pocket army.(he'd never use it as such but they would defend him to the death I believe) .Newt not putting up a proper fight bugs me. Hopefully the next one we'll see him cut loose. in defense of animals .
That was a great Scott Sterling reference 😂
Dragons are also magic resistant, a Dragon scale armor might also protect you from Avada Kedabra.
Scott Sterling.
The man.
The myth.
THE LEGEND.
Guess dragons are also worhtly to mention. I find Quiln some kind of dragon from east so its logical their scales got protection abilities... Question is how much scales u need. One, 10 or full armor?
😂😂😂 that intro Avada kedavra got me
Building upon the fact that the Qilin obviously have something with soul-magic to do, does the act of making a Horcrux involve a Qilin?
Something having something to do with a type of magic doesn't mean it is the only thing having to do with that type of magic; like, you don't need a phoenix to light a torch. But even if that were the case, dementors are more clearly established as relating to dark magic and soul manipulation/extraction. They'd be the obvious known fantastic creature to be involved in horcrux creation.
@@abydosianchulac2 you make a valid point and I agree! I was thinking more of the fact that the Qilin seems like a "holy" creature of the Wizarding world and based on everything we know about the creation of the horcruxes, it would not be entirely strange that the Qilin is involved.
Hagrid(giant blood protected) was also zapped with “a green spell”, he’s doing fine
One more clever way for Harry to block a killing curse: to be the master of the wand being used against you.
But really my takeaway here is that we're coming up with all these reasons for Harry to survive killing curses because we just won't face the fact that HARRY IS PART QILIN YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!
One way to block the killing curse may be the one malfoy used to summon a snake in the chamber of secrets
I’d be curious to see what effects a wand with a qilin scale for a core would possess. Assuming they can shed them willingly like a phoenix. I assume it would be unable to perform dark magic, and would only work for those pure of heart.
I don't know if it could even be used as a core; it's not the most slender, compactible, shaped-like-a-stick thing in the world.
@@abydosianchulac2 maybe a Qilin whisker then? That mike work, especially if it was shortened. A heartstring might also work.

What if there was a spell that blocked the use of magic, could a witch or wizard still use the killing curse also if you were fast enough could you dodge or reflect the curse back to someone using it?
Avada Kedavra is unblockable.

Its a theory a FILM THEORY
6:13 I love how viral this Studio C video got, because it honestly is still one of the funniest videos on the internet. Great reference XD
It's unblockable because you can't cast a counter spell or use magic to block it.
They never said it wasn't unguardable.
Dumbledore uses golden states the defend against it. Also magical beasts can be immune to it.
They made a video before talking about how if you wear golden armor you could also block it
Love the Studio C reference 😂❤
I still haven't seen the film yet was waiting to stream,at home ,but it looks like the magical creature's are punished and harmed way to much,I don't like to see harm come to the innocent.I enjoyed the video the rules of the killing curse do seem to waver a bit much.
These films have been a bit rough in general for those of us who want to see and learn more about the titular beasts.
LOL!!!! "You're a regular Scott Sterling."!!!! Excellent!
The twin cores were not a coincidence. Harry must have tried every wand in the shop first. Plus Olivander eventually gave him that wand, knowing that it was the twin of Riddle's. So def not an accident.
It was a coincidence that twin cores somehow stopped an "unblockable" curse, though.
"not many people are alive after they have been killed."
-Johnathan Lewis Carlin 2022
They need to incorporate some of these theories into the movies.
You guys' sponsor bar always amuses me, I like the logarithmic timescale you're setting up :P
I really like this explanation, but let's be real the Qilin only survived, because the writers are getting lazier with every further movie and are just completely ignoring what rules have been established before.
Plus AK was originally used to extract victim's soul using brute force which often results in death.
This is due to complex mechanics which bind body and soul preventing direct extraction.
Since the blood pact contains blood from both Dumbledore and Grindelwald, it's possible that casting the Killing Curse on the blood pact would carry the spell through that blood link, and kill both of its creators. That may be why Dumbledore wouldn't find a way to convey a request that someone else try it (because the blood pact would likely prevent him from asking outright). He's not yet desperate enough to be willing to sacrifice himself for a chance to kill Grindelwald.
Why is no one else talking about this! That’s my new headcanon.
fun fact, there is armour protecting agains avada kedavra
PLOT ARMOUR
A Scott sterling reference for a win
The audible gasp that swept across the audience at the premier for Secrets of Dumbledore when Grindelwald killed the Qilin was PALPABLE. I actually shrieked NO! out loud and my mom threw her hand over my mouth lolol
Ok, that intro 1min in gave me chills. Awesome.
Since when does J wear Gryffindor stuff 😂 Love it
Duel I'd like to see: Moldywarts versus Tatsuya Shiba from The Irregular at Magic High School.
Not only does Tatsuya automatically reset to a prior state when his body drops below a certain threshold of combat ability, he can do a spell that is very similar to what Harry's wand did to Lucius Malfoy's wand when Voldy tried to kill Harry with it. Pieces of wand all over the place.
Scott sterling reference tickled me
6:12 "SCOOOOTTT STERRLIIIIIING!!!" 😂👌
The editing on this video is great 👍
Mate you be scamming lol
Who falls for this
Thank you for that comment about the qilin bowing to Dumbledore!!! Looking forward to that video
Harry does of course block a killing curse (aimed at Molly) with Protego, but I guess that comes back to sacrificial love.
that yellow line sure does start off quick LOL
And perhaps it could be two things at play:
(1) The Mother qillen had love for her born and yet not born calf, which the love may have kept her alive long enough to birth
(2) The intent of the caster may not have been all in on killing the mother, at least while they still had not yet had the calf in their possession. After which, yeah, sure, intent to kill.
as i see it there are 5 main ways of avoiding it. You can dodge, apparate away, conjure objects to block it, summon objects near you to block it or finally rely on special circumstances such as love sacrifice, wand relation, wands not wanting to kill their true master, being bound to life by a lovecrux or horcruxes etc. The main flaw i see in the effectiveness of the curse is that for someone skilled at conjuration like Mcgonagall, it should be quite trivial to quickly conjure a sufficient object to take the hit just as easily as casting a shield charm.
What would happen if Newt was at Hogwart's and he said he needed perfect place to hide his special magical creatures? Did room of requirement create his special luggage?
I couldn't help but assume the Qillin is so rare because it's been hunted over the centuries, and if this hypothesis about its pelt/scales is true it would provide for a very strong motive behind Wizards hunting them nearly to extinction.

Grindelwald is quite clever so I think he knows about priori incantatem. Any action with your wand is retraceable, so I guess thats why he used a knife
question: did harry's wand choose him? or did it choose the part of Voldemort that was attached to Harry?
Certainly the part of Voldemort that was inside him. Many things happened to Harry just because of it's presence. Later on the wand by itself chose Harry because he cared about her as no one else did before, to the point of restoring it permanently with the Elder Wand. Also nobody ever defeated him, so the allegiance from the wand was still intact. Even though Phoenix wands are not so pure as unicorn ones (those may even refuse to produce certain dark spells), they also are not so eager to give power to whoever owns it, like dragon ones. They are loyal and respect loyalty, and they respect greatness. Harry was great, was loyal, was tenacious and was the only one to own it. So yeah, I think it's chosen him because of the horcrux but then he got its loyalty by proving all those qualities as a wizard and as its owner.
