I use used motor oil to preserve all my wood. Just keep brushing it on. It will all soak up, and gives it a beautiful stained look. Keeps bugs and water out for years to come. And it doesn't rub off on your clothes once it soakes in like most people say.
Watching you straightened and bent nails to reuse made me smile. My daddy taught me that long time ago when I was about 9 years old. I'm now 68 and I still remember that.
My father was a structural engineer (MIT Grad) and when we built our house and outbuildings (he designed them) in Vermont, none of the roofs had less than a 2’ overhang (eaves) to keep as much weather as possible off the sides of the buildings. It also provided a considerable amount of shade to the windows in the summer. It was a very effective design principle
50/50 mix of diesel and waste motor oil works excellent as a wood sealant/preservative. About 3 coats giving the wood all oil it will take. Then a fresh coat every year or 2 wouldn't hurt.
Great looking project! Your chain saw skills are really good - and practical. That shed will last for generations! Now the work of restacking the wood in the shed begins!
Some used engine oil mixed with diesel makes an excellent wood sealer. I treat the decks to my flat bed trailers with that and it’s better than anything you can buy.
Tis a thing of beauty! Never seen a lap board roof before. That was pretty cool. I love the contrast as well. A clear wood preservative would be my choice.
A solid build, with skills and commitment this shed came from idea to fruition. Looks amazing and will stand the test of time I'm sure. The free hand lumber cutting and woodworking continues the "old school" ways of doing things, a lost art really. Great job, well done, thanks for the video. Stay safe.
This has been an enjoyable build to follow. Just in time for snowy weather! I'm sure you've seen it done before, but some used motor oil and diesel (50/50) makes an excellent- and cheap- sealant for wood. You'd probably be worried about a spark landing on there for a few weeks, though LOL Thank you for the fun videos!
Good evening Sir....:o)) We also hat (heavy) rain all day long in southern Germany. I really enjoyed the series! It looks great. I just wouldn't paint the shed, only seal to wood against humidity. Enjoy!
Who says you can't make judicial cuts with a chainsaw. Fine job Riley, you have a slice of Heaven property. Getting really crazy here in the lower 48. Never thought it could/would happen. Here we are! Honestly, cover it with couple layers of 30lb saturated felt which will last for several years, even more protected with peat moss
Have you evwr got a sprayer for the garden and applied old motor oil to your boards. If the oil is to thick you could cut it with a bit of diesel. That will help protect it from bugs and rain.
Nice work, as always. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. I'm sure you'd have a lot more done if you weren't taking time to film and edit, but we appreciate getting to see how your projects unfold. It's a lot of fun and very restful to watch. I hope your hunting/trapping season goes well. I'm off to watch some Kusk Bushcraft... Peace to you from Alaska. ~Tim
Great job brother, I use Cabot Australian Timber oil for all my outdoor stuff works great and it looks good it's a natural colored finish it's a bit pricey but I think worth it.

Save the nails. I have straightened out quite a few of my own.
Yeah, I keep my nails too, why not use them !👍

I can see the point in that !!
Your father essentially created benefits of a wrap around porch without the resource intensity!
❤❤❤❤❤

Your grandkids will enjoy that shed!

render some pine tar. would be a cool video and you could treat the wood shed with it.
One of the cleanest wood sheds I've seen!! love to see the building/crafting series on both your channels.
Love the looks of that new shed! Great work, start to finish. I sure enjoyed this whole series, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's coming next!
Good to see you again. I can't wait for trapping season...
Never paint anything, you'll have to do it again every few years.
That is so cool. Everything gathered from the woods. Good craftsmanship.

Lookin good man!! ..that thing will stand for many many years....
Wow! Looks amazing!
Thanks Harlan!! Miss you buddy!
Love the Helle Sigmund knife you gifted Ryley.. hoping to own one soon myself.. peace fellas :)

Dude, that saw is so sharp it is throwing graded cheddar. You read where the tree is going very well
Grand work.
Please can somebody buy Kusk a stepladder ?!?
You did great and with all that clearing and hard work, you'll have some great memories there and more to come! Such a peaceful spot for sure!
Nice. You really did a great job with sawing those boards.

Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your experience with us!

That is one good looking woodshed! Well played!
It looks really neat... you have a good eye for detail and know what you are trying to achieve.

Glad to see all your hard work pay off. Should last you a good long time.

i am really impressed with your skills and knowledge, enjoyable to watch, looking for more.

Nicely done.
Wow! Awesome.
Great job. Maybe some oil stain or similar

Beautiful job,am impressed 😊❤
Great job sir! I would have sealed the roof with boiled linseed oil before assembling.
Well done. God bless.

Excellent video!! Amazing what you can accomplish with a chain saw!!
Great job Riley 😃, don't paint it but definitely seal the roof and the uncovered wood, looks good with the natural finish 😉🤙🤙🤙
Really nice job on that roof!!
You did a nice job.
👍👍 greetings from 🇳🇱 the Netherlands
Great work. Looks really nice, IMO.
That went smoothly. Are you gonna seal the top?
Awesome video , nice work, I’ll try your method my self, thanks.

Such a wonderful job! Congrats!
Great job on the wood shed.
Now, let's start stacking firewood for the winter Ryley.
Right on nice wood shed 👍
Thanks for sharing your project! I look forward to the next!
Awesome Job!
Oooooo man. Once again I wish I was there to help you. Doing that kind of work is so much fun
Well done sir!! That looks fantastic!! Nothing like a bit of hard work and having a successful completed project!!
Nice
Seal them up with some linseed oil. Easy and affordable. Then plan on resealing them every fall.
I’ve suggested before-used motor oil for the roof.
You did a good job! I like the look of it.
What a great job!
Looks great. Angle and overlap will keep it dry, yes.
Looks more like a shed for firewood than a cabin.
Looks great.
Any fish in stream under bridge? be safe.
Check out a 50/50 mix of used motor oil and diesel for the roof finish.
Turned out great. Well done.
50\50 used motor oil and diesel. Cheap and effective sealer
That is amazing! I would consider a metal roof. At least it would be more fire retardant.
Always great content! Thanks!
Well done! Very nice my friend😎
Great job! Looks awesome
Awesome job 👍
Hey, do you know Bob and Doug McKenzie?
Very nice.
What thickness were the boards for the roof?
He cut them to 3/4" to account for the shallow pitch of the roof.
You use a chainsaw for everything. I hope you don’t use it to trim toenails too? 😉

Time to do some hunting!
Where’s yer dog ??
