I agree with IT as #1. I was never in the military, but I’m an IT defense contractor and over 90 percent of the defense contractor work force I’ve worked with in Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa and Korea are veterans. Most were IT specialists from all services. The pay is decent.

I had a great job in the Navy. I was a hospital corpman surgical technician. I served mostly with senior officers and was treated very well. I had to perform my duties extraordinarily well, but I was rewarded for my diligence. I received rank advancement regularly and lived off base once I became a second-class petty officer. I toured Japan and traveled across the United States at several duty stations. It was a great experience. I recommend taking advantage of every technical school the Navy offers.

I worked in Operations (OP Division). As a photographer I got access to a lot of events and celebrities that few other sailors ever get to interact with. When there were important things going on photographers were front and center. I got to ride in helicopters, air planes and scuba dive. The thing about being a photographer is everyone wants pictures so we traded photos for other services such as fresh pastries, special built bags and gold letter patches by the parachute riggers, and a lot of other special services. I just wish I had thought to apply for a job as a photographer on cruise ships and continued to travel the world when I got out of the service.

Also a Blackhawk. Also the Seals’ RHIB and MK5 boats. Also some civilian contracted helos and private jet once. But never a navy ship. 😂

This dude is a recruiter fs.
Here’s my list, lmk if you need more information:
1.) AW (DRY) AWF AWV AWO - Aviation Warfare Systems : Great advancement to 2nd/1st Class, great way of life, interesting badass job. Chance for a TS Clearance. And the best part you NEVER see a ship.
2.) HM - Hospital Corpsman : Great way of life, can go so many different routes. Only downfall is the advancement rate, although the Meritorious Advancement quotas are huge.
3.) FT - Fire Control Technician (Subs): TS Clearance, great opportunities when you get out, high advancement all the way to Chief. Badass job, camaraderie is high, you’re always in the know and you put warheads on foreheads.
4.) OS - Operations Specialist: High Advancement Rate, Stuck on ships for your career, early days in port, set schedule underway. Don’t need to deal with as much bullshit.
5.) MC - Mass Communications Specialist: Great way of life, high recognition, good advancement but it also can be stressful if you’re the only MC on the ship or command, great opportunities to step outside your rate.

I've got pride in my IT rate and all, but you're right on a lot of the benefits coming from what you can get AFTER the military. The amount of people I went to A&C School with who got INCREDIBLE contractor jobs with great benefits and pay after only doing 4/6 years in was ASTOUNDING! With that being said: I think any IW rate is a great choice for options outside the military in today's tech world - but IT is definitely at the top because it's so broad.

I appreciate you keepin’ it real, but one thing I think I have to mention to you is... if these people not feelin’ they rate, they might take it up with you because you are sometimes overly recommending rates to people. Like some comments I seen, people pick IT merely because you highly recommend it. I would just be wary of doing that because recommending what people should do with their lives is a big responsibility. Giving the disclaimer that you can’t tell people what to do with their lives would put you in the clear.

The Official Dave Harris yeah man I do have one question. I saw your other video about enlisting at a later age. Well I’m going to be 23 by the time I hit boot camp. People say when they are older recruits they get called old man or whatever. Well, I look pretty young, maybe 19. My question is do they do some kind of thing where everyone says their age out loud so everyone knows? Or would you only be treated differently if you LOOK old? I’m not too worried about it but just wondering. I’m definitely much more prepared now then I was at 18z

    • @theofficialdaveharris8794
      @theofficialdaveharris8794  5 ปีที่แล้ว

terriblelottery Great question!! The only way other recruits will know your age is if you tell them but the RDC will probably know your age. Being 23 you will still be considered young in bootcamp because there will be someone in their 30s for sure, so don’t worry. I was 22 in bootcamp and it was people way older then me we had a guy that was 36. They treat everyone the same.

Everything you said is pretty on point with the exception of the OS rate. OS's are not FAA certified, so the likelihood of you scoring a job as an air traffic controller is pretty slim. I should know, I was an OS for seven years. There is very little in the civilian sector that translates well with the OS rate. The pros of this rate is you CAN make rank quickly, however, it bottle necked after first class (at least when I was in). It's also true that when in-port, all you have to keep you busy is training and cleaning, so we were known as liberty hounds. However, when you're underway, get used to working six on and six off. When you're not on watch you're doing quals, training or cleaning. So do don't see your rack a whole lot. The biggest con is as I mentioned earlier; very little translates in the civilian sector from an OS. So, unless you plan on being a lifer and doing at least 20 years, I would recommend a different rate like IT, CT, or HM.

Thanks for your service brother and “Welcome home”. I joined the Bees in 79 as an EA and most my LPOs, CPOs were VN vets and tough. I appreciate it ¯\◔ー◔/ back now as they kept me on my toes. Back then less “report chits”. More take off shirts, duke it out, shake hands, and then go have a drink after that.
I do feel for one SWC ¯\◔ー◔/¯ back with my first battalion (NMCB-3), the guy always seemed a nervous wreck and I was young and didn’t really know why but recall one day in Okinawa, one of the guys cane behind him with a paper bag filled with air and cupped and smacked it to pop like a ballon and shook the guy up. It was dumb as I know more about his experiences now.
Always fortunate when I can talk to Bees B4 my time. Did get to meet a couple of WW2 vets who helped pave the way for the Marines to raise that flag at Iwo Jima. Different times.
I was part of air det and on 48 hr notice once for real-time heading out while deployed to Sigonella and then they decided to wait till incoming battalion turnover and send them. Think around the time news had an EO got shot ( no seriously think goodness) was one dozer or something. I was an EA, so I would have been stuck in HQ CP doing BS paper work. But loved my time as a Bee

I would not necessarily disagree with your list but my bias would have AW on that list also. Even though the rate is small, a majority of AW's only ever see water when they are flying over it. As enlisted, you are treated, most of the time, like an officer and share almost the same quality of life. If you do become an HM, then I would suggest to pick a "C" school thats going to benefit you.
NEC 8404 (Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist) is a proudful rate but very hard to pick up unless you're in combat or making great achievements at the hospital/clinic or BAS. I picked up E4 during the battle of Fallujah in November 2004. Basically, I was lucky to be in combat at the time for advancements.
But remember, there are thousands of Corpsman in your rank doing the same thing, so you have to be on top of your corpsman knowledge, show signs that you steadily want to continue to GROW and DEVELOPE into that hard charging Corpsman.

Do not be an OS. You will be port and starboard meaning u will stand A LOT of watch. I would have rather been a CS because they get a full night of sleep every single night and had the hook up with everyone! It is a hard job though I won’t say it’s easy but that sleep is worth it. As an OS u will work 6 hours on 6 hours off from 12am-6am then sweepers, training, try to take a shower, eat , sleep, workout. Then back on watch from 12pm-6pm and do general quarters or man over board depending on the ships Schedule that day. No days off, no holiday routine, no breaks during 45-60 day underways. Couldn’t join and clubs on the ship to make it fun like the junior enlisted Society or do Karaoke night unless u want to miss sleep and be tired af on watch and get wrote up because ur body doesn’t function on 3-4 hours of sleep at a time for over a month straight. I literally cracked on deployment because I didn’t have a normal sleep schedule. I would have loved to sleep for a full 8 hours just one day. Don’t do it to yourself and please don’t get pregnant because u don’t want to deploy, thank me later. I agree with the other rates in this video and AC is a great job as well.

    One objection my brotha.
As a Seabee, everybody in the Bees knows that the CE rate is the best rate in the Seabees. You deal with all levels of electrical distribution systems from high to low voltage, and you get to Fob out individually, or in small two to three man teams. The benefit to that is you avoid the Battalion level B.S., and overzealous Chiefs/ junior officers. The BU rate is like the Boatswain Mate of the seabees. You'll be an over worked slave that does all of the dirty work and heavy lifting, and you'll likely rarely be assigned far from the Battalion, or Detachment unless you're doin something like say Convoy Security Element; so get used to having higher ups in your face all of the time.

Being an OS gets you zero points towards ATC in the civil world. If you the want literally the best chance to become an Air Traffic Controller on the civil side then become an AC hands down. Has the best sea/ shore rotation out of all rates in the Navy. 5 yrs shore duty and only 2 yrs sea duty. OS is most based on ships so the rotation last I heard was still 5 sea and only 2 shore if not 1 shore.

True that. I am a retired EA, and was fortunate to spend 1 year on an oceanographic survey ship. Spoiled a bit, and nothing like wearing sneakers and T shirts shorts for a uniform while MSC did all the cooking and cleaning and dirty work. But def not a fan of seasickness 😂. I enjoyed flying to our sites. Had a great 20 years spite being a rebellious troubLemaker the first 5. 😏

So I’m going to meps in Sunday, and I have a couple jobs from my line score that I like. Ea, Pr, Abh, and Abe. I’m leaning towards either ea or Abe, but I heard that ea can be dangerous because i might be deployed to like Iraq at some point. And I heard that the Abe and abh work for so long in a day. I’m just so confused on what I want to do. Do you have any advice?

Return Of the bean out of the jobs from your score line I would personally choose PR I hear it’s a great job. ABE work a lot on big ship like air craft carriers, but on smaller ships ANE is cake.

This is an old post. I’m not sure what way you went. I’m a retired EA, and only drawback was advancement is tough. It’s a small rate. On other hand. It has a lot of great perks and I wouldn’t want any other rate in the Seabees. ( I could do all but the CM, I suck as a mechanic). Wish ya the best
