Great Cars: GT-40 Ford v Ferrari

  • In the 1960’s a young Ford Motor Company executive, Lee Iacocca decided that Ford needed to compete with the world’s best companies like Ferrari, Aston Martin, Maserati, Porsche, Mercedes and Jaguar in high performance motor racing. The task of creating a car that could stand up against these racing powerhouses seemed impossible. Iacocca convinced Henry Ford that they should just buy Ferrari.
    When Enzo Ferrari sent them packing back to Detroit, Ford told Iacocca, “We will beat him at LeMans, no matter what the cost.” Thus began the story of the Ferrari Ford wars that pitted the fortune of the second largest corporation in the world against the God of motor sports, Enzo Ferrari. Ford had more than money on its side - they had a secret weapon, Carroll Shelby who would take Ford’s GT-40 to fame. Today, Ford is releasing an update street version of its glorious GT-40.

The current Ford GT is much better, and what the 2004 version should’ve been mechanically. American car companies, always late to the party, and under engineered. Rude crude and zero sophistication. Using barely controlled brute force to just barely perform.

Yep, beat Ferrari so bad, especially in 1967, by some 30+ miles and Ferrari, with all its advantages in racing experience has NEVER won Le Mans outright again. I guess rude and crude is the answer to producing a race winner!

      An honest version?? You got to be joking my friend, the gt40 was an ENGLISH LOLA race car, the same as your COBRA, an A.C. ACECA. and to top it all you had to get hold of BRITISH drivers to get any results like Ken Miles, Phill Hill, and others, then ford killed said Ken Miles by screwing around with the chassis on the G.T. 40s causing it to crash, so let's not get carried away in thinking they where both all American cars

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Roger Hearn - #1 - It was NOT, repeat, NOT a Lola - it was merely designed around the Lola layout - big difference! #2 - You need to do your homework better my friend - Phil Hill English??? Hardly, he was born in the U.S. #3 - The Brits may have laid the ground work for the GT but you failed to mention they initially had horrible results with it as not one even finished Le Mans in 1964 and 65! It took the engineering prowess of Shelby American to get the job done "proper" as they like to say in England. I've read more comments from mostly Brits that think England should take all the credit for this car's historical results. Since it was a combined effort between England and America, except for the MKIV which was all American including the drivers, I'll give you some credit but please stop trying to hog it all for the crown!!

    So who's wrong? I've read that Ferrari wanted to retain the racing side of Ferrari and Ford refused to buy only the street car side of the company so Enzo declined the deal. This is the first time I've heard that Enzo just didn't want Ferraris racing in Indy...

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John McGlasson - Most automotive minds at the time felt that Ferrari never really intended to sell to Ford. Enzo was using Ford as a pawn, probably to convince Fiat to buy his company. Think about it, why on earth would a European specialty manufacturer of strictly high end vehicles want to sell to a multi-market American company - doesn't make sense. Enzo did tell Ford he was not interested in racing at Indy, I think knowing that would kill the deal with Ford and give him an out from the contract. I'm a Ford fan but I also am grateful the deal fell through as those two companies were about as similar as beans and caviar!. It would have certainly ruined Ferrari and in all likelihood would have hurt Ford. It all worked out just fine - Ferrari was acquired by Fiat and Ford got back at Ferrari for pissing off the Deuce and built the famous Ferrari killer - the GT40.

      @@Loulovesspeed I'm not sure about that...credible sources on both sides. They had a whole lot of paperwork drawn up, negotiations at great expense...if anything Enzo tried to slide the detail about retaining the racing side thru unnoticed...we'll never know. The thing that might make your point is that Enzo could've kept racing under another name...why do this?

    Very interesting insight into the history of the GT40, especially the old film shots of the original racer. However, when you mention that the car 'just faded out' after the MK1V win 1967, this is slightly bias against the later efforts of the Gulf/John Wyer teams in the next couple of years, where the FIA had banned the big engine motors. The 1968 and 1969 GT40 MK1 wins at Le Mans, to name just one race (both in the same car, chassis 1075), where they weren't now in attrition battle with Ferrari but now the Porsches. The GT40 won Le Mans (the pinnacle of endurance racing obviously) from 1966 to 1969, in various guises, only then did it fade away... !

      Alain David This video was about the initial Ford backed efforts to beat Ferrari. Ford then retired their team when the FIA changed the rules banning the big 427 CID engines and engines over 5 liters. The ‘68 and ‘69 wins were primarily via the private John Wyer team which was trying to develop their Mirage chassis while campaigning the older original GT40s of 1965 vintage, updated of course.

    Shelby 'built his own cars' by stuffing a Ford V8 into an AC Ace sportscar, which was produced in England. Later he took over the Ford GT40 project that was started in England by the Lola company and FAV under John Wyer, with whom he'd won Le Mans for Aston Martin. Just another case of the United States of The World taking all the credit.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Suffill - Shelby didn't take over the GT40 project on his own, it was transferred to him by Ford since the British had been completely unsuccessful in getting it to run, let alone complete or win at Le Mans. Yes, we will take credit for that. Lola did not start the program. They were involved for a short time in the early stages of development and Ford did purchase a couple of GT MK6s to study aspects of its design in order to create the GT40. Be honest and accept the fact that the GT40 creation and success was due in much greater part by the efforts of Ford Motor Co than it was by Lola and John Wyer. It was an American idea, which had British input, but was ultimately made into a successful Le Mans racer by Ford, Shelby American, Holman Moody and other American firms. We do not take ALL the credit for this car, but we damn well earned the majority of it! Ironically, I see more examples of Brits trying to take the majority if not all the credit for the GT40. Some young Americans do the same thing! Bottom line, young people on both sides of the pond who weren't even alive then and have never researched this program thoroughly, are both guilty of overstating their respective country's involvement. As for the AC Ace, I didn't see any British firms or people even attempt to accomplish what Shelby did with that car. Through his very talented crew, he made the car into a world wide icon and in doing so, kept a failing company (AC Cars) alive for longer than they would have on their own. The final Cobra, the 427, had virtually no British components other than the pitiful British made gauges in it. The only remaining parts of the car that were from the the first Cobras were the engine cover and the trunk lid. New body, new chassis, new engine and driveline. It was a British car that was redesigned and developed into the one of the most iconic racers in the world. Yep, we'll take credit for that, too!

      Ferraris "Deuce" win at Daytona, was just as impressive as Fords GT40 MK IV win at Le Mans.
      Its true that Ferrari never won Le Mans again but in 1972 with 8 race wins from 9 they decimated the fieldl winning the WSC series, and could have put new nemesis Porsche and Matra truly in the shade had they entered Le Mans that year with the fabled Ferrari 312PB.

Also, Ford didn't throw money at a problem, they saw it as an opportunity to broaden their image worldwide as a company capable of developing and successfully racing what was to become an historic machine. @@Pulsonar Ferrari did not return the favor since LeMans is run in June and the Daytona 24 hours in late January/early Februrary. Ford was 1-2-3 at LeMans in 1966, so I suppose the victory by Ferrari at the '67 Daytona 24 hours was payback. A Mk IV driven by Mario Andretti and Bruce McLaren won the 12 hours of Sebring. Ferrari failed to show. When all money was on the line, the Ford Mk IV destroyed the Ferrari 330 P4. Ferrari was also beaten soundly by Porsche in 1970 and 1971 with the 917. None of this is to say that Ferrari was no good, because their cars were really fast and made the most glorious sounds ever for an internal combustion engine. No doubt the 330 P3/P4, 312P, 512S, 512M and 312 PB were the most beautiful race cars ever produced.
