    I was gifted an e bike a few days ago, I’ve had so much fun fitting new brakes, cleaning, polishing, altering seat/ handlebars, removing mudguards etc etc... I’m really enjoying these kind of bike videos! Liked and subbed 👍

    The orange pedals with the grey of the bike ant the detail are awesome.I would have sell an arm to get a bike like this in the 90's if you could .

      @martinpetts585  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely - this is what drove me to building it really. I could only afford a basic Lava Dome in 1995 (that I still have), but wanted a Hei Hei !!

      Me too - I could only get the bottom of the range. Now I am always looking out for the old top of the range (would love a Kilauea or Hei Hei) but they are difficult to come by...

    Fantastic work with the homemade decal... i find decal fitting so stressful 🤥totally agree with you ... the 94 /95 decals are the best. I'm guilty of fitting them to all my Konas regardless of the year 🤫

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  ปีที่แล้ว

      Love it. Yes, I would fit them to all Konas too - but they look a bit strange if the frame is too modern. Although I think Kona went back to the old logo at some stage not so long ago?!

    Did you use 4K clear? I’ve done a few bikes and always use a 4K clear to get a factory tough finish. My wife had that bike but it was stolen from our house along with a couple more bikes😔 That was her first good quality bike and she loved it. Years ago I replaced with a Soul Cycles hand made in USA bike. It’s a bit small for her tho.

    excellent paint job ,beautiful bike !, what did you use for the repairs on the frame ?

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. It was automotive scratch filler. Do you want the brand etc?

  • @SeanMather
    @SeanMather 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It looks great but your order of operation seemed more difficult than you needed it to be. I don’t think you needed to do anything before the sandblasting (maybe the stickers, but wouldn’t they get removed anyway?), then I would have done the scratch filling, primer over everything for better adhesion, then laid down the white, masked it off, laid down the black, masked that off, then everything silver, unmask, then clear. I’m just armchair painting mind you lol, but I feel like you could save yourself some time and effort based on what I’ve seen other bike painters do. I could be totally wrong though, like I said, not much practical experience outside of a shop class decades ago. The end result though is excellent, I don’t see many others taking the time to do the filling, but it makes it look new again!

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Sean. You are right of course. I was actually thinking about sanding the frame by hand at first. Then the effort became too much and then decided to sand blast. Otherwise would have done the sand blast from the beginning. Next time I will just get the paid taken off straight away. Thank you for your comments! :-)

    • @martinpetts585

      I actually used a auto-paint spray-can, but will be looking into other options for the next one.

    • @martinpetts585

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi, you shouldn’t use sandblasting on aluminum frame, glass or walnut would be better and gentler on the frame surface. Also sand can introduce micro fractures into frame.

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so right. I want to try walnut next time. This was really my first experiment in removing the paint from a frame. I was going to sand by hand - but took much too long! Thank you for the advice!

  • @timsim83
    @timsim83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Huh, I didn’t know there was a stormtrooper for sandblasting.

  • @thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind
    @thinkpadBentnoseTheBlind ปีที่แล้ว

    looks good. next time try baking soda and coffee grounds instead of sand.

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree - the finish was not as good as it should have been. Thanks for the advice.

    This bike is a dream... but i'd cheat the "retro coherence" with that steam and i'd mount a shorter one

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes - I have thought about done a retro-mod and just using the old frame and upgrading almost everything else. Another project I think coming on...

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585  ปีที่แล้ว

      To be honest I wouldn't have if the frame was in better condition. But because it had a few dents, I wanted to try to repair them. Thanks for watching!
