    8x8 shackleton was my purchase 3 years ago to use in north central MN. it was an experiment for a year. withstanding winter, thunderstorms, wind, etc., it is a very durable shelter. more floor space than the prairie at 8x8, still the best buy for the money ever spent.

      Thanks for your comments Charles. It's really great to hear that other people are finding the Shackelton tent to be a great purchase. I really do love this tent and all the great features that Dave Ellis has designed into it. We did take it on a canoe trip last year and that was a perfect choice for that trip. So much head room and comfort. Take care

    Thanks for the thorough review! I have an Ellis, 10'x10' Prairie Tent, and love it. Have used it here in Minnesota, with a stove, for years.

      Great to hear! The Prairie Tent certainly peaked my interest when I was shopping around. Then I hooked onto the Shackelton only because a friend recommended it. Happy wanderings. Take care

    Great review as always Dale! Your tour of the tent has really helped me consider its merits.

      Thanks Ratchety. Are you thinking of buying a winter hot tent? I'm sure you would love it. I would go with a snowtrekker or shakelton tent if I was to purchase another. Both are super cool tents. Take care

    Gorgeous tent. Definitely a workout with two people on a windy day to put a tent back in a bag - never fits anyway. Great information !!!

    Great seeing you and Colleen again! Nice tent there, Dale. Tipping my hat to Dave Ellis for a well thought out design with lots of clever, useful and practical features, like that quick and efficient carry "bag" - how cool is that! And the neat and trim carry bag for transporting the floor back home - we all know how dirty and wet tent floors usually get on both sides. Great hack for keeping the sod cloth off the groung to dry things out. Also, wise thinking to occasionally leave some of those heavier "non-essential" parts at home in favor of making these once at camp - thought through like a true bushcrafter ; ) . All the very best to you both!

    Thanks for your video review. The isn't a lot of info about these tents. It may be a silly question, but in deep snow, how do the door poles (and the centre pole for that matter) not sink into the snow pack with all of the downward pressure of the tensioning lines? Thanks for your time.

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comments. To keep the center pole, and end poles from sinking, i have to place flattened logs under them. I haven't used it in snow deeper than 16 inches as of yet though. When the snow does melt inside the tent, i have to do some minor adjustments to keep it taught. Hope that helps.
      Take care

    Nice review, is the stove jack in the top of the tent completely removable in case you want to change hole sizes? I noticed Dave has different size stove jacks on his website to choose from. I would need a 3” and a 4”.

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for your comments. The stove jack is not removable. But Dave would likely make a removable one for you. Dave is super willing to meet customer needs.
      I'm in our tent tonight and it's-30 Celsius tonight. I have a 4 " stove pipe hole and the tent is wonderfully warm. Take care

      @@NatureAliveAdventures That's awesome! Do you still choose to not use the floor in your tent when using it on snow? I know Don (from 4Dogs) has mentioned that using a floor in a hot tent would save you from the moisture coming up from the ground on snow which would mean less wood you would have to burn. I have mixed feelings about having a hot tent with a floor in it over top of snow. Not to mention if I am splitting wood and such inside my tent, all of the wood debris would be all over the tent floor making it a clean up nightmare.

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We purchased the removable floor option and I am super glad for that decision. Dave has a great quick instal/remove system set up. I picked up 8 small carabiners to make it even faster to pop in or out. So you can take it with you and choose to use it or leave it out based on your camp situation.

    Thank you for this really helpful review! We are debating companies and models of hot tents and stoves for our first purchase, including Snowtrekker, Esker, Shackleton, luxe, stout bell tent etc. and thinking of a Gstove trying to figure out the best options for us. Now that you've had it for awhile, would you still say the 8x8 would sleep 4 people in the winter, or would the 11 x 11 be more suitable? Have you tried it on a canoe trip yet and if so, how did you like it for that? (We would be using it for winter camping and possibly spring/fall canoe trips in Saskatchewan). Also, what kind of cots are those? :) Thanks again! Happy trails!

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Nicole, thx for your comments. We just had the Shackelton tent out this past weekend. It's wonderful. I would recommend the 8x8 in the winter if you are a family of four with smaller children - you would fit well and the 8x8 is easy to heat up in bitter cold Saskatchewan nights. However, four adults would be a bit tight with all the winter gear, stove, cots, and firewood.
      My only caution for the larger 11x11 tent is that it would be larger and heavier to pack on a toboggan, and likely too bulky to pack in a canoe on trips. I feel like a tent that size would likely stay home and never see a canoe trip at all.
      We did use our shackleton tent on a canoe trip last summer but it was set up as a base camp for a week of day trips on the Wildhay River. I do still think that we would pack it in the canoe for cold season overnight Canoe Tripping because it's just so comfortable and spacious, and the stove would be magnificent for cooking and warm sleeping. But since my wife is a school teacher, we don't have many multi-day trip options when school is running.
      The cots were purchased on Amazon for around $60 each. We do like them and use them often, but we have 2 issues with them. They take some time and effort to set up and take down( much quicker to use a thermarest mattress in the summer). And in the winter hot tent, it is nice to have a cot that is chair seat high( in winter you spend more time in the tent and you can stowe gear underneath the cots). But we DO really love how small those cots pack down and they are super comfortable and rough ground isn't and issue. I prefer the cots to air mattress in the summer but it's hard to cuddle my wife on cots😁
      Take care

      @@NatureAliveAdventures Awesome, thank you so much! This is really helpful! How did you find staking that tent in the winter / snow? How do those guy wire tighteners work in the winter? Thanks so much! Happy trails!

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nicoleborealis For winter staking you can tie to trees, shrubs, or bury anchors in the snow. If that isn't an option, I use 12 inch spikes from the hardware store and a good hammer to pound into the frozen ground. Also, Ellis tents supply military gade tent stakes that are strong enough for most ground and all but the super hard frozen ground in January to February.
      The guy line tightners work wonderful all year long.
      Take care

      Hello, very thorough review of the Shackleton tent! I’m a fellow Canadian moving to northern BC. I’m seriously considering an 11x11 or even 14x14 Shackleton tent, as an alternative to a wall tent, since I like the design of it and having the stove in the center with much of the stove pipe inside the tent for heat. How was the duty and shipping to bring this tent into Canada 🇨🇦? Also, which size would you recommend for 2 people? I like the idea of the largest size, but know it may be harder to heat. How much more difficult is it to heat a much bigger size in winter do you think? I’m mainly planning on having the tent set up permanently while I’m building a small cabin. Thanks!

    is the floor reinforced where the center pole sits on top of it? It seems like the pole would damage the floor over time the way you have it set up. Thanks

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I just keep a small piece of wood under the pole in soft soil or snow, to prevent the pole from pushing through the floor. Floor fabric is pretty tough though. Take care.

    Hello, Have you had any burn holes in the tent from hot embers from the chimney? Thanks!

    • @NatureAliveAdventures
      @NatureAliveAdventures  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. Thanks for your question. So far no burn holes in the Shackelton tent. But yes I have burn holes in my older canvas tents. They occasionally occur when the wood being burned throws large embers. Luckily, most canvas hot tent manufacturers use sunforger marine canvas that is treated with mildew and fire resistant chemicals to prevent burn holes. But I always recommend that you never leave the camp area unattended with a hot fire and sparky wood going. Take care.

      Thanks for your comments Mark. I did consider the second door, but in the end we stuck with one. I figure it's just adding another place for zippers and seams to fail with use. If I had bought a larger 11x11 or 14x14, I would have included the second door. Take care
