    Your old tent is repairable. Use a piece of canvas to cover that tear. It should be 3 inches in each direction from the tear. Apply a generous layer of henry construction adhesive to the inner and outer edges of the patch and press it well in place on the outside. Its heat resistant, flexible, waterproof, and sticks to everything.

    If your leaving a canvas tent up for any length of time, invest in a vinyl cover/rain fly

    As your friend at My Self Reliance figures out, whatever size you think you want just double it and add a walk in porch and screened deck. You will be in heaven. You get one chance to do the foundation right. Can’t wait to watch the series.

      Hi there. Any other tips and tricks that you might suggest? Just bought my first one and am putting a wood stove in it. You seem to know what you are doing?

    • @JesusSaves86AB
      @JesusSaves86AB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SnozBerryQueen You can buy silicone/fiberglass stove jacks very cheap, alternatively you can use an aluminum baking sheet or two.
      We will be buying our first canvas tent this year and I will be reinforcing the stove jack immediately with a baking sheet and extra fiberglass.
      It seems to be the typical fault point on these tents and is easier to prevent than repair.

    I hear you about the canvas issues. I had my share of problems. I went with a Sierra Designs Mountain Tarp Tipi that I sewed in a silicone stove jack. It was killer. Not sure why I sold it. I kick myself for letting it go. 70D Nylon. 5 lbs. Fast and easy setup. A bit of sag and poor heat retention though. However, I just bought a Luxe Megahorn XL in white to replace it. Excellent so far. Way better heat retention. We will see how it holds up.

  • @VE3FAL1Fred
    @VE3FAL1Fred 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's not winter that kills the tents but UV from the sun. My 10x12 prospector lasted 20 years and last year was the final for it. Never leave the stove pipe in when you leave is first advise, the stove jack in that tent was not of thick construction and I can see why it failed, silicone was not thick enough. I have an 5 man arctic bell tent that withstood a nasty storm last year without fail. The adage you get what you pay for sometimes is very much true, with snow, rain and ice storms here in the North, trees barely survive, let alone a tent. I left my prospector up 2 years straight and summers killed it......cheers Fred

    Frameless canvas tents are used were someone needs a light and packable shelter. Design is important because the fabric takes all the stress. The snow load over-stressed your chimney fabric which looks like fiberglass mat never meant to be stressed. No one who I know uses rubber around a chimney--high temperature silicone which can be mistaken for rubber is appropriate. For winter camping where it snows, use a framed tee pee where the snow shouldn't accumulate as much and where the canvas has support. Any framed tent will take a higher snow load because the frame takes the stress and supports the canvas more. Keep in mind snow can even flatten out a framed wall tent if the snow isn't cleaned off.

  • @crazyhorsejohnny1974
    @crazyhorsejohnny1974 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Canvas tents that don’t have an internal frame don’t last very long if you leave it up for months. Especially in the winter time if there’s lots of snow buildup. Anyways congrats on your new land and upcoming projects.

  • @vliegendehollander55

    Very good news..! Make a good plan and keep it adjustable I would say. Don't make the cabin to small even it will take a lot longer, later you will regret it. You see what Shawn James is doing? First a porch and then a extra room because his wife is going to try there to live also. He has a great one man cabin built and have to work hard now because its a bit to small. Better think twice...

    • @DrenalinAdventures
      @DrenalinAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest challenge I'm finding is deciding the size. Still debating it.

    • @mikeylorene
      @mikeylorene 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrenalinAdventures You don't have to build the whole thing at once. Stake out a large floorplan- the size you WISH you had if money and time were no object. Then, build it room by room- the front door and living room first, which will serve as tiny living quarters as you build the next rooms, leaving a doorway to expand to next room. Build every season, or when you have the time and money. One room at a time and in a few years (or less), you will have a big nice house- and still leave a door to expand even more later.
