Jason thank you for this interview. Growing up as a Metal Head kid from Iowa in the 80's I would buy all these metal records of bands I would read about in the Hitparader, Circus, and RIP magazines but only was able to see the major bands that would come to Iowa during there tours. The bands like Leatherwolf never came. So it is so cool to watch your interviews with these more lesser known bands. Thank you for what you do!
sorry, the debut was all the Leatherwolf I ever needed. I saw them a bunch back then at Country Club, Troubadour and I remember one New Year's Eve show either at the Whiskey or the Roxy. I can't remember which. great shows all of them. fantastic live band
@@WasteSomeTimewithJasonGreen Just watched it all now. Another great interview, Jason. Some interesting backstories about the band through the years. "Thunder" and "Princess of Love" remain my favourites after 3 decades so I'm glad they didn't mellow out.
This helps to make sense of Leatherwolf's trajectory/journey. Something that kind of puzzled me back in the day was after reading a magazine article around 1989 about Fates Warning and it said something like "and other progressive metal bands such as Liege Lord and Leatherwolf" -apart from E.S. I didn't really see them in that company. Now I understand the different personalities and tastes that made the group and how they got to Street Ready. Personally I absolutely love all of those first 3 albums, though by 1989 they were kind of falling into a weird no-man's land between Power or Progressive Metal and Glam Rock - a very niche area that they could have patented as Proglamive Metal and made millions :-D
I don't like what he said at 34:20 . He said " you have lazy people that write simple stuff just cause they're lazy " . That makes no sense because by far the best songs and classics were written on "Street Ready" by Michael Olivieri and Carey Howe on the tour bus going from venue to venue .
just discovered this channel and I am binge watching! THANK YOU JASON! Best thing about this Leatherwolf episode is realizing Street Ready is finally on Spotify!!! best news of 2023 ;o)
Dean is a great drummer. His chops on Street Ready really showed his variation and style. To this day one of the best albums from the era. A total GEM :)
I just listened to The Henchman, Hit the Dirt and Kill the Hunted... This is NOT the Leatherwolf of days gone by and I freaking love it!🤘This is Leatherwolf, The un-neutered version.
@@WasteSomeTimewithJasonGreen Never heard that album. Only ever saw the '87 self titled album at any stores. Knew they had tons of potential like RIOT and LION. Two other bands that should have got their due.
@@WasteSomeTimewithJasonGreen Just been listening to that album and I'm getting Wasp and Maiden vibe here and there, definitely not your typical hair metal style it's got some edge to it. See if I can get a CD online. Thank you Jason keep up the awesome work 👍🤘
@jasongreen I am demanding you take this down, I wish you had a direct contact so I don’t have to contact you here publicly. I have no felony or fraud offense and this is defamation, I would ask you do not aide and abbed this slander. Thanks Carey
Just so people know..leatherwolf or endangered species is the debut..2nd album 87 is just titled leatherwolf ..has a black and white picture of band..street ready is there 3rd release in 1989..and I think it's the best..I'm from New Zealand..I was 19 when street ready came out..with blue murder st..they were 2 of the greatest albums of 89..
I saw LW open for Stryper Dec '85 here in LA. Michael picked up a BC Rich and they covered QR Lady Wore Black. Had seen LW in BAM but that blew me away.
ISLAND RECORDS HAD ANTHRAX! How is that not mentioned here. He is talking about how Island did not know how to market a metal band. Explain Anthrax's success. I understand that deal was a collaboration with Megaforce Records but Anthrax were on Island.
I met Geoff Gayer at Rock And Skull in Pekin Illinois several years ago. He was cool as fuck but drunk as fuck too. He ended up in jail that night 😂 I think Metalsludge covered that story.
HAIL MARY has all the original guys from leatherwolf minus the drummer, they dropped a new album last July titled DISTURBING THE PEACE! Same ass kickin triple ax attack, new material! Get it now!
Dean sounds discouraged, disappointed by his former members, and sad for not being able to continue with the original band, I thought that Carey had moved to Costa Rica for his wife who is from there and now everything indicates that he left for fraud. Keep it going Dean you did a great record so far..God bless you..
The first album was really great The 2nd album (Street Ready) was good too but not as memorable. I don't know anything beyond that . I think their record label probably abandoned them. I never heard their debut EP & yes it came out in 1985. He's wrong. Not 1983. Why they weren't bigger? For the same reason all bands carrying that traditonal heavymetal style weren't successful - by 1986 the metal scene became fragmented between glam and thrash - Those bands that did not fit into these boxes were lost and most people did not care (I am talking about Armored Saint, Grim Reaper, Loudness, Savatage, Fifth Angel and Leatherwolf - these bands all struggled to find an audience)
Always liked these guys. They were good, but the tunes were average. I felt like they could have been a Shrapnel artist and probably gotten further. Dean might be Tom Arnold.
I’m with you, Jason…Street Ready was my introduction and I freakin’ love that record. The one new track I heard was okay, but this is not and will never be Leatherwolf, in my eyes. It’s a little strange to hear someone being critical of the songwriting and direction when they had almost no input in that area. And it’s stranger still to be angry about a member wanting to write with outside writers and then make an entire album with essentially “outside writers” that you just decide to call Leatherwolf. I don’t know…good luck to the guy, but this is a pretty weird situation.
You can tell by the way he talks his vernacular he uses the continuous use of and the way he pauses and thinks this isn't genuine this is not a genuine interview he is skewing some of his data and speaking in a way to limit what he says cuz he doesn't want to say the wrong thing I don't buy one second of this interview from this dude. Just look at the Michael interview that's a genuine interview he's very relaxed there's no hesitation in his answers he's just putting it out there Also my hats off to Jason you can see like five six times in this interview he just wants to blurt out dude what the f*** are you talking about the evidence doesn't back this up but he keeps his composure and he keeps trucking through that's a good interviewer
I disagree with the assessment. The first E.P. was very unique for the time. Michael was a great front man and had something different vocally. The guitar work and tightness of the band were spectacular. It wasn't until later that they became more commercial, but they were still too heavy for the hair metal crowd. Overall they managed to carve out a unique niche for themselves, and they should be happy about that even though it didn't lead to a huge breakthrough in popularity.
i never thought Leatherwolf ever went into a glam phase at all....they had long hair...if thats what your getting at? I never liked Wades vocals..didnt like him in crimson glory either though.
Also I have to just add this for someone who is so down on the way Mike sings whether he writes or not or whatever your new singer is an exact clone of them. no offense to the new singer, very talented kid ,very talented but to stit here and say you didn't like what Mike was doing and turn around and put a very carbon copy of him in there you're not believable
Used to see them when I was a kid. Jezebels and marquee. Good times

It was cool to see them opening for Queensryche on the Mindcrime tour at Irvine.
Geoff Gayer is one insanely talented player. Sad very few people ever talk about him. Glad I got to see them in the early days. FV/HB
Looking forward to seeing this.
*Leatherwolf* were one of my favourite bands as a teen.
I hope it didn’t disappoint

Hey if I committed fraud and have a felony , I think I would know….😂 clown World.
Hey, sneaking this in at work!!

That was cool Dean. Interesting to hear another side of the story. Long live Leatherwolf. Never forget: God blessed us all. This Fri is Good Friday.

Carry Howe and Geoff were both cool when I met them and signed my cds.
The 🐺 is Back been a Fan since The Calling and then went back catalog
Faithful fan of the Triple axe attack since the Ep. Spiter rips

Love their second CD Street Ready

I have a friend from new castle pa. Name moose who was supposed to play drums for leather wolf
wait - one of these guys got convicted of fraud and is living as a fugitive in Costa Rica???
WHAT DID I JUST HEAR?
😂 yeah, I think I’d know if I had a felony or fraud conviction
Lol..... lies!

Michael Olivieri is going to come on and explain his side of things
It's weird that he's belittling so much of the material on the 2nd and 3rd albums when those albums got the band a lot of fans.
Street Ready is OK record.
I liked the 1987 Leatherwolf record. Unfortunately, like Fifth Angel, the band fell into the faceless, non-descript, “who gives a shit” category.
Fifth Angel!
Midnight Love!!
Let's see I still listen to these albums on the regular.... fifth Angel is one of my all time favs. Sooo I give a shit I guess

Dean killed leatherwolf, the band resurrected as HAIL MARY
who tf is jeff? the only jeff i knew was from the 2004 demos. but hes talkin like from before 1987
lol i forgot geoff spelled diferent. srry
I was going to say Geoff is an original member 81-21
Michael Oliveri is still in SoCal
