    ☞ Important update ☜
    The interactive feedback offer at New Masters Academy recently came out of beta. Interactive feedback for assignments is now happening on the website, and can be purchased with NMA tokens.
    I hope that clarifies the difference between my video and what you see on the website!

    Thank you for clearly stating that you were not a beginner when starting out, Julie. This is often missing when people talk about their development, and seems to cause a lot of stress and confusion among newbie artists. This video is really interesting, and I hope we'll get a second year update.

      Thank you for your comment! Yes, I think it's important, I don't want to place myself as an exemple in any way, just sharing with as much transparency as possible. I would love to see what kind of progress a beginner would make! But that's not me, and you can't ignore your past experiences.

    Thank you, Julie. I’m a 4 Year NMA student. I have just discovered your videos and have now watched several. I really like your open honesty and your work is superb. I envy your drive and progress, of course. I have heard your ‘voice’ in your Discord contributions at NMA but these videos have already been inspiring for me. Not that I feel you present your work to impress, more to share. Yes, it’s exceptional to my eyes but I feel the stage you’re at is just a given for you and you’re just focused on an open and generous account of where you are in your particular journey. A great tribute to the brilliant New Masters’ Academy.

    Thank you for posting this deep dive into your experiences with New Masters Academy. I am in a similar situation to yours and I am looking to embark on an education course with an online atelier. Seeing and hearing about your journey is very valuable to me because many students do not document their experiences online learning. I feel like I can make a more informed decision now.

    An incredibly packed year displayed in this excellent, well divided video - congratulations on keeping at it despite the occasional obstacle, which you successfully navigated! It was fascinating to watch the evolving of your style and art. The self-portrait in watercolour was very well executed. Did you use a photo for reference or use multiple mirrors? The Jan and Apr gouache works compliment each other so well - one in very warm, the other in cooler tones. I particularly like the Apr one. But truly something to notice is the superb execution of the charcoal still-life when considering this medium being in the 'no-no' zone! 😅The translation of the different material surfaces/tones/reflections is absolutely SPLENDID! Despite the smallness of the picture on the screen, the transitions appear to be very smooth and clear. Did you use a fixative after the sketch, or is the work still in unfixed 'raw format'? (it really is a lovely work and reminds me a bit of the works from my favourite still-life artist Jean Chardin). Once again a big congratulations for all you have so far achieved - but do remember to occasionally 'recharge the inner batteries'. Rest is just as important as work - and health is paramount! 🤟🎨

      Thank you for your comment! It's nice to read you again 😊
      The self portrait was from a photo that I took myself - I even took a few, and used different ones for the hair and for the face. It was a very slow, meticulous project, I couldn't have done it from life with a mirror.
      Thank you for the charcoal! It's definitely one of my best pieces, and the largest one too. Yes I used fixative on it, as with all charcoal pieces and some graphite ones, I don't want dust to get everywhere.
      I'm recharging the batteries at this very moment, taking a few trips... I still have a lot of time for the next classes ☺️
      I hope you're doing well!

    I took Nma for a month and I got fast with the courses trying to finish everything in one go lol now I regret it and want to go back to take it slowly the thing is I’m very anxious and if I don’t get it perfect I move to something else and get anxious with criticism which isn’t helping.. did they tell you which class to take cuz it look like you choose the courses you want to take first

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Which courses did you take while you had the subscription? Did you submit in the interactive tracks to get some feedback on your assignments?
      I know what it's like to want things perfect, but I think with these assignments we have to shift our mindset. These aren't artworks, these are exercises. The goal isnt asthetism, perfection, or anything like that, but skill acquisition. Assignments are designed to target a specific practice, and the only goal is to practice what they're about (and nothing else, so don't worry about rendering when it's about structure for example) and show the feedback team that we got it. An assignment isn't a reflection of your identity as an artist or what you're capable of, it's just an assignment.
      In the same vein, critiques from the feedback team and coaches are only meant as constructive advice to improve on the specific skill an assignment targets, it's not about you, it's not about the entirety of your work, it's here to help you take the most out of the classes 🙂
      I know even knowing that it's not always easy to put yourself out there but I hope that helps! It's a truly positive and constructive environment.
      For the classes I chose, I download the course guide PDF on the NMA website and I have been following it. When you start they recommend the same classes for everyone, it's the Drawing Foundations module, it's only after that that you specialize... And I think their recommendation is excellent. The module went through some changes since I started, so you may have different options than I did, but I think it's an improvement.
      I hope that gives you some motivation back! 💪

      @@Julie.Miette hey, thank you for responding.. i subscribed to nma last month, I been trying to learn the fundamentals for months from yt but that didn’t work well for me cuz I was going from anatomy to gesture to portrait drawing and so on.. and I figured out it wasn’t gonna work so I took a book last month to learn the structure way of approaching the fundamentals and it was an eye opening and that’s why I took the nma course cuz I wanted to be tutored.
      The thing is, I wasn’t familiar with the nma approach and I took their offer fast and without prior plan( I wanted to take proko’s before) and I was shocked by how much work and time it would take me to portrait drawing for example.. also, I been struggling with anxiety for months and drawing is the only save space, intense-anxiety free and fun thing to do for couple of months, so I wasn’t familiar with the intensity and hardship of learning the constructive way of drawing and how much it would trigger of my anxiety ^-*
      Also, i wasn’t familiar with their website so I didn’t know that I could submit anything and get feed back and I didn’t want the subscription to be for nothing so I just took almost most of the molecule 1 ( except perspective it was the hardest) as fast as I can ( I knew from first day that wasn’t a good idea lol) I just wanted to get the whole idea as fast as I can, I didn’t try to be perfect, it was just some good sketches some bad, and i must have gotten burnout by now lol.. but I really enjoyed the courses, it was very challenging and eye opening, I felt like I was in school again, so I might subscribe again and go back to the very first 2 courses ( cuz the 2nd one was the most challenging one for me by far) but I have to deal with my anxiety and burnout first before taking it again.
      ( Sorry for my English, I hope you would understand what I wrote)

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes TH-cam has a lot to offer but it's all over the place, good info is lost in a sea of bad advice, and when you find the good stuff it's not structured.
      I'm sorry that it's anxiety inducing for you, I think you should protect your safe space if that's what art is for you, definitely keep that practice alive, and don't put too much pressure on yourself about the learning. It is definitely a lot of work, but you can only make progress, and there's no reason to put pressure on yourself to learn faster than you can - these concepts take a lot of time to sink in and that's normal. It's not like maths where once you understand something, the job is done: in art once you understand, you still have to practice a lot to internalize. Beating yourself up won't help in any way.
      So you're telling me you took most of the Drawing foundations 1 module? Or the part 1 of the module? Either way it's still a lot in such a short amount of time.
      I hope you feel better soon, and when you're ready to go back to your learning, please take it just one step at a time and join the Discord if you haven't, a lot of people are going through the courses with similar struggles and a positive environment helps!
      Take care 😊

      @@Julie.Miette thank you for responding, and sorry for responding late I needed some time to heal..
      yes I took almost most of Molecule 1 courses in less than a month and I got burnout because of that… very bad idea but it was worth it actually lol.
      Your video was very inspiring and I’m taking your advice and I will try to get back to nma again this month and I startback from course 1&2.. I will not rush it this time inshallah, I want to get better and do my best as you did..
      Also, I have some questions I want to ask you about
      1/ what materials do you use? cuz most of the materials they use in nma are very expensive and hard to find in my country.
      2/ how do you go with measuring? cuz that was very hard for me.. do you have some method you use?
      3/ do you sharpen your pencil the way they do in nma? and do use the hand grip they use? cuz that was also very challenging for me
      lastly, do you have instagram acc? I have an instagram account and I posted some of my drawings, and I’d appreciate good feedback from you💗💗 check it here @artbyarrietty
      again thank you

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1/ For the most part I use the materials recommended or something very similar, I am lucky to have most of it available for me. One exception is newsprint paper, so actually I use sketching paper that is more expensive... If you have questions about this or issues replacing something, the best thing would be to ask about it on Discord, maybe there's someone from the same country who could help you find an alternative.
      But as a rule of thumb, materials are a recommendation and you don't need the exact same ones, you shouldn't have to go broke or hunt for materials to go through Drawing Foundations.
      2/ Measuring is difficult! It gets a bit better with practice, but I have been struggling with it too. My best advice is to limit variables: make sure you're at the same distance, extend your arm, lock your articulations, stabilize your arm with your opposite arm (take your elbow into your hand for extra stability), make sure the tool you're using is perpendicular to the floor in both axes, not leaning towards or away from you. Also know that smaller objects are harder to measure.
      3/ I tried different sharpening methods and I prefer a pencil sharpener for now, one that gives me a long point... I did learn to sharpen the way they teach it, and I experimented with grip as well in multiple classes, now I don't really think about it and I went back to my more natural grip. What matters is the quality of line, and I can get the quality of line I want. I often switch grip for different things... In the end, don't stress too much over it. But my advice is: even if you're struggling, follow the courses, try the grip, you may gain something in the process. Sometimes courses force us to do things differently, then we may adopt it or not, but during the course, I think we should follow the process.
      Yes I'm juliemiette.art on Instagram 😊
      I'll take a look, but I have to say I'm not comfortable giving feedback...

    Your channel is so cool, your videos have such good quality, it is visible the effort and dedication you put on them!
    I'm kind of in the same situation as you as an artist and I'm even the same age as you.
    I'm considering taking a fundations course but I'm in between buying Brent Eviston course, Proko basics of drawing or NMA, but if I decide for NMA, it"ll be the cheapest suscription, otherwise wouldn't be affordable for me. So I would like to ask you something:
    Can get feedback also in the cheapest one?
    And you said in order to get feedback you must do all the assignments and the courses in order, but you also said you are doing 2 or 3 courses at the same time, so I'm a bit confused about that.
    Sorry if it's too much text. 😅

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not too much text! 😊
      I think you still can get feedback with the cheapest subscription, but I would double check with the team, you can just send an email or ask in the Discord and I'm sure they'll reply quickly. Unfortunately I can't check this for you. I used to get feedback with the lowest subscription when I started.
      I don't know Brent Eviston so I don't know what they have to offer, so between Proko and NMA I would recommend NMA because of the feedback and community, that makes a big difference. So definitely check 😉
      Sorry for the confusion about the order of the classes. Actually, the Drawing Foundations module is subdivised in parts (6 parts), each part containing multiple classes. Part 1 contains: Drawing Foundations I, Fundamentals of Drawing and Perspective, and Fundamentals of Observational Drawing or Sight-Size (to complete the module you only need to take one of the last two, but you can take both if you desire). When you start the interactive tracks, you have to start in part 1, and you have to start from the first week of a class, but you can take the classes in part 1 in any order and / or take multiple at the same time.
      I'm not even sure you have to start with Drawing Foundations I, but I would recommend it as it gives you the best overview of techniques and materials before jumping into the other ones.
      It's only when you have completed all the courses in a "part" that you unlock access to the next part.
      I often take more than one class at a time, but for feedback it's always classes in the same part.
      I hope that makes it clearer, please let me know if it didn't! 😊

      I'm sorry for the confusion, when I enrolled at NMA the feedback system was in beta and this is why I was able to submit my assignments at no extra cost. Right now it is 1 token to submit an assignment for written feedback, (which is 9 USD per token if you get the pack of 10).
