- Night Slashers Remake is coming to PC and Consoles later this year, but a demo will be available on the upcoming Steam Next Fest and it will be available for download starting on June 10th.
Forever Entertainment kindly sent me an early copy so I can share my opinion with you and, well... I did!

I complete agree with your comments about the characters / enemies are "too clean". This is the problem of many remake games as well. The art designers are either too lazy or careless and they have not taken into account how "old" or "dirty" the characters / enemies should be. All of them now like wearing fresh new clothes from H&M store.
So your point is that this splatter game is not splatter enough right?
Definitely feels they could have done a bit more for such a cult classic.
yeah.. the art in the og looks much better. yeah this is high rez, but it's extremely generic looking now. The art has no style at all & frankly looks very amateur. the backgrounds are frankly pretty bad.

I'd guess most of it comes down to time and budget, they probably had to work fast and cut corners.
Real bummer as Night Slashers deserves a better treatment.

Not necessarily. Look at what the good french software house company Dotemu, was able to realize with a limited budget with those two masterpieces like: streets of rage 4 and tmnt shredder's revenge, or ska studios with Salt&sanctuary, or even those two devs with Mortal Shell. Which it proves that the budget itself is not an actual limit. Sometimes indie games are even better than AAAA ones, right Ubisoft?
I do agree that the new graphics feel too bright, compares to the old game's style which felt much more washed out and grimmer. But I wonder- looking at a video of the old game I feel like the zombies swayed a lot even when the old characters hit them as well. And it may be something that people who look at animations notice more than me, but I felt like the rock-man boss jumped just as breezily in the old game as he does in this one. I actually do agree that the animations SHOULD sell you on this heavy, hefty creature jumping around should look like it's really straining to lift itself up, kind of like when the Hulk jumps, but I feel like neither version really does this so... it may be a case where the fault is they're being TOO faithful.
I think the biggest issue may just be that the sprites felt more "grounded" in the world. The colors, the shadows, the way they don't seem like cut-out dolls that are kind of "pasted on" (even if technically that's how it is with every videogame)- the pixels have somethibg about them that just sells them more as part of the gameworld, whereas these new drawings feel much more like paper-dolls sliding around on backgrounds. I'd think it'd be really interesting to have a kind of side-by side check, perhaps when it's time for the actual review and you can spend more time in editing than a quick demo overview, really see if the drawings and sprites are actually that different frame-wise / see which one comes off looking or feeling better.
That said I'm still interested in this because I do still think this looks like a fun game - beating up zombies, reanimators and vampires with a buff dude armed with a cross is the kind of experience I'd like to reward and encourage. We shall simply have to wait and see how good yhe actual game turns out to be!
Honestly I forgot this was happening, IDK it looks alright, but MAN did you see this fan-made arcade rom hack version where they added more blood, more enemy types (recycled sprites from other games which fit the theme)? Makes the game so much more chaotic I love it.
That rom version is amazing, with a new advanced combo system, game play really shines and it looks great. There's several clips here on YT if anyone is curious.
Yeah custom roms/mods are always the deal for any game imho.
Looks amazing. I loved the original game, especially Jake with his 'surfboard' move. Hope it gets released on the Switch!

Absolutely love The original. It really stood out in a time when the genre was crowded .
I do prefer pixel art but that won’t stop me from getting this on release date .

I feel like Mayhem Brawler has a similar issue with the frame skips for some of the moves. But both the upcoming GI Joe & Phantom games look real bad. Some of those moves be looking like they have 2 frames.

It definitely will, but not anytime soon. I am a ps player myself though.

I feel like the major problem with the art is the colour style. The gradients are too high-contrast and colours don’t blend together particularly subtly. It looks kind of like a mid-90s comic-book, when colourists were really going to town with a whole bunch of Photoshop tools. It also looks a little over-saturated to my eye. I’d use a softer airbrush and try and keep the values of the background tones a bit closer together, preferably somewhere a bit lower down the saturation scale.
Looks like a promising game to play TFK. Thank you for sharing this with us kind sir. I never seen or heard of this one before until today. Thank you TFK I learned something new . 8^)

I think the graphics look fine, I do want more blood though, the original was gorier, almost like they censored it here. I really hope it has online coop but guaranteed it will be local only
River City and Double Dragon Gaiden, did not have online mode at the release, but they might be adding that post game launch though imho.🤙🏻
I like the art style. This is the demo 😅 so i hope they'll iron out the loose ends before the full release. But it's enough if they can't. There's updates for that kinda stuff. I'm shocked this was made to begin with. The original was made so long ago.
In fact, some people should not judge a book by its paper, because as you rightly said, it is simply a demo after all, as there is nothing that a patch cannot fix though post release. Good point and good vibes coming from you bro.🤙🏻

EVEN If This "Remake" Is JUST AN OBVIOUS, SHAMELESS REMASTER (Like Nintendo's RECENT "Paper Mario: The Thousand Years Door, A PROPER REMAKE Would Add MORE STUFF To It, Like More Playable Characters OR A Villain/Anti Hero/Neutral Character Story Mode, ETC! It Could EVEN BE A DLC, Just Be Sure To ADD IT), It DOESN'T DESERVE ALL The Doubt it's Getting, Like The NEW, UPCOMING Rushing Beat X Return Of The Brawl Brothers (As Someone Who LOVES Rushing Beat, I'M REALLY THRILLED For This One!), It WILL Be Fun For Me To Beat Up Zombies With The Characters In This "Streets Of Rage 4" Sprite Style (The SAME Of "Mahyem Brawler", SWICH I Also Own), A INTERESTING JOURNEY, No Doubt About it.

Many so-called remakes with added stuff to them are actually expanded remasters.
Thanks a lot Ricardo. I agree with you, Night Slashers is also not in my list, of favourite Beat’Em Ups. Better if we will have a remake of Metamorphic Force, for example, if we’re talking about arcade Beat’Em Ups. Much more cooler and interesting game. But yes, this one is also good, why not. Thanks to devs, for this remake of NS.
I dunno why they didnt add a single hit-pause when hitting a large group of enemies

The problem for me is the animations, i mean, why the hell the only good animations are the idle animations? Looks awesome, but the rest is like "poor garbage low fps animations" or something

I will jump on the graphics bandwagon. Sorry, they are not good. See the characters face and you will undersand. Also, I agree with you about the clothes being too clean for a zombie game.
The grabs are all out of place! The enemies are wrongly placed in almost every grab you show on the video.
See the ice magic attack? Note how the enemies DISAPEAR before the ice appears...
I see there is a long way to go here. There is potential, though.
They went from detailed sprite work with character in the original game to something that just looks basic and cheap like a cell phone game in this "remake". It's like they wanted to copy the SoR4 art style but didn't have the art team.

I think the animators shouldve added more frames in all of the animations. Looks like a desktop game.

I didn't know the original game but I just watched a gameplay video and... I'm sorry man, but people have all the right to be upset. Pixel art has a unique style and charm that simply can't be translated well to this new style.
I love SSB, but, this never gelled with me and I found lt too creepy.

Tengo Project set the golden standard of how to remake old pixel games. This just looks off.
Shame could have been a classic but instead looks like a mobile game shame as original is awesome to play

What are you talking about there? Night Slasher is an old beat'em up series too, definitely not a Sor clone at all, as this is simply a reboot though.

Weird Demo the Sound Effects sound worse than original and the characters seem to talk less and enemys have less voice clips. Why the second level not the whole stage its missing two bosses and the Golem boss no longer has Eyes yet rest of models look indentical to original arcade sprites these could be just demo things though.

I can't handle it anymore. The game is pixelated, bad. It looks modern, also bad 😂 But seriously, when it comes to graphics: SofR 4, goodbye. These elements in the foreground, dynamic lighting, reflections in puddles, blood effects and atmosphere... it does the job. I don't know why people care about appearance. As long as it's tomorrow, I'll play it myself. Very good review 👍 Oh, and the original is not in pixel art. Graphics are blurry. I played arcade machines in 1994, and I still play today. The game looks as it should, it is supervised by the creator of the original
You are wrong. Proper aesthetics matter in games. For example simulators of reality should aim for photorealism as much as possible. In this case surrealism is likely better, but based on chosen art style it can be appealing or unappealing for majority of gamers. The original Night Slashers has pixel art aesthetics dictated by limitations of hardware. This means that assets are designed for low resolutions and CRT displays.

The graphics really are the first thing that stands out. Not sure what the look they were going for was, but it appears more a fluid flash game than classic retro reworked. Maybe they were going for what Streets of Rage 4 did, but didn't get there. the animation is fluid and seems to play fine though somewhat stiff, so the visual part just seems to be the part to get past, though I think many will judge it first on that.

At this stage it's just too sterile compared to the original. The original one was an intense audiovisual feast. Here we have sounds of hit toned down and muffled, gore toned down and not so detailed, music somehow not so catchy, color palette also seems slightly less vivid and sprites somehow seem less detailed despite being of higher resolution. As a result it doesn't have the same charm the old one has because has been watered down to the point of being yet another beat'em up with nothing special going for it, just with cartoon zombies this time. Details matter.
