  • This is a demonstration of some of the capabilities of the Peak Atlas DCA Pro (model DCA75) made by Peak Electronic Design Ltd in the UK.
    A selection of parts is shown being tested here, there are many more parts that can be tested and there are indeed some parts that can't currently be tested.
    The DCA Pro adds considerable features to the capabilities of the popular DCA55, such as USB connectivity (allowing simple low current, low voltage curve tracing), a graphic screen (showing component symbols) and an enhanced analysis portfolio.
    Some types of parts that we know that it can't currently analyse (as of Feb 2013) include unijunction transistors, triacs and thyristors that need more than 10mA, and voltage regulators that are not stable without their decoupling components. Additionally, Zener support extends to nearly 12V and voltage regulator support extends to around 8V.
    The DCA Pro comes with an alkaline AAA battery, comprehensive printed user guide, USB cable and PC software on a Peak USB flash drive. PC software updates and instrument firmware updates are provided frequently offering continual enhancements, new features, extra component support, new curve types and other improvements. Power is provided by single internal AAA cell and/or USB power.
    We do our best to respond to feedback and we try to implement feature requests when possible. THE best way to contact us is by using the email link on www.peakelec.co.uk/content/contact.html.
    Everything we do is designed and manufactured in the UK and carries a 24 month warranty.
    More detailed information is available at www.peakelec.co.uk.

    Hi Musthafa. Thank you for your question. Yes, the DCA75 can test most types of IGBTs including depletion mode and enhancement mode varieties. You can attach the 3 test leads any way round and the DCA75 will give you lots of information including: IGBT type, pinout, input threshold voltages and transconductance (gain).

    Hi Sivucit, thank you very much for your comments. I hope you enjoy using your new instruments. Generally, if possible, it is best to test out-of-circuit to avoid the effects of the surrounding circuitry. For 2-leaded components you need to remove 1 lead from the circuit. For 3-lead components you need to remove 2 leads from the circuit. The Atlas ESR can be used to test ESR in-circuit as the capacitor's ESR usually dominates the measurements, so that is the exception :-)

    Yes, I've tested many 2N3055 transistors (one of my favorites for building PSUs in fact). There are many indications of a "good" transistor so you can decide if you need to investigate further or not. Gain, Vbe and Leakage are all good indicators of transistor condition. The DCA75 is great for matching devices, you can use the device "stand alone" or use the curve tracing capability to superimpose the curves for different devices on top of each other to check for matching.

  • @PeakAtlas

    Hi Miguel, thanks for your question. Some regulators aren't happy when being tested outside their usual circuit of decoupling caps, minimum load etc. This is discussed a little more on Page 28 of the user guide.
    Some regulators can be "tamed" a little by placing a 0.1uF capacitor between GND and VOUT of the regulator. I tried that on a 79L05 today and it then measured it correctly. So in answer to your question, it's possible that your regulator is ok even if it's not detected.

  • @PeakAtlas
    @PeakAtlas  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Generally, if it displays that it has found a particular component type then it's a working component. You can then decide if the detailed specs that it shows are good enough for your intended application. For example, a transistor may be working but have quite low gain, so you'd reject it on those grounds. If a component is completely dud then the unit may say that a working component has not been found, or a short circuit has been detected, or possibly a PN junction or 2 have been detected.

  • @PeakAtlas
    @PeakAtlas  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We recommend that testing out-of-circuit is the best bet as it's not possible for us to know the influence of the surrounding circuitry (imagine how a transistor would look with a low value resistor across two of it's legs). Sometimes you'll get away with it and you can test in-circuit, but it's not a good idea generally. Also, there is more danger of damaging the instrument if there are charged capacitors or power on the circuit. We know it's not always easy, but out-of-circuit testing is best.

    Great video,
    A follow up video with leaky, shorted or open junctions would be helpful. When I buy devices, I have already looked at the data sheet and see little value in confirming the OEM data.
    However, more info about the troubleshooting capability would add much value and help justify the cost.

    With a little experience you will find that it is not necessary to test every component on a board in order to find a fault. You should be able to "narrow down" the areas that are most likely to be faulty (depending on t he circuit operation) and then test only a few parts to find the faulty one.

    Hi,
    i was wondering if there is a chance of having some batch testing of devices. So if you want to match a big number of, e.g. JFETs for same IDSS, you might want to simply plug those in one after another having enumerated them, and then the measurement might be automatically transfered by the PC program to an excel sheet which then can be used for bundled matched parts. I guess this can be done with a firmware update. Is there a chance to have such a feature or is it already there?
    Thanks for this cool little device,
    Walter

    2) Are you guys planning on developing a more advanced version of the curve tracer? I.e. with an external power supply - for larger power range- so you can test devices at their limits and really use this tool as a design aid?

    Hi, it looks very interesting. Can I match the transistors pairs with this one successfully? How the device react for temperature changes in the matching proces?

    • @PeakAtlas
      @PeakAtlas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DCA75 is great for matching transistors. You can can measure both hFE and the base-emitter voltage (which are often needed for matching). Furthermore, you can overlay whole graphs on top of each other to determine a good match for your own personal requirements. Both gain and Vbe are very temperature sensitive on transistors of course, so you need to ensure minimum handling of the transistors and allow time for the transistor temperatures to settle to ambient before testing. These are fundamental characteristics of semiconductors and not the DCA75.

    If I understand correctly, the DCA Pro DOESN'T explicitly tell you if a semiconductor is Good or Bad. It gives you the operating parameters of the component (and identifies it) and then you have to compare them to the manufacturer's specifications. I guess another way to tell if the component is good or bad is to see if any of the lines on the curve traces breaks down or is distorted.

    • @MadScientistsLair
      @MadScientistsLair 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. But most semiconductors fail fairly catastrophically which means the DCA Pro will tell you if it's bad rather quickly by indicating a short, no component detected or it will think a different class of device is present. (For example, a transistor with one open junction will show up as a diode.)

    can you test components in circuit?

    • @PeakAtlas
      @PeakAtlas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally speaking we would not recommend testing in-circuit. Sometimes you can get away with it. The influence of potentially unknow components in an unknown circuit configuration can of course affect the readings that the DCA75 is trying to take and that is impossible to compensate for. Furthermore, you can't always be sure that the circuit you're testing is completely free of stored charge and that may damage the DCA75. Another thing to remember is that if you have the DCA75 connected by USB to your PC, then a ground loop problem can occur if your equipment under test also has a route to a different ground, big currents (and failures) can then occur. So testing out of circuit is recommended and I acknowledge that is not always convenient.
