  • David Krakauer performs his song "Heyser Bulgar" together with the WDR BIG BAND under the direction of Chris Byars. Solos are played by Heiner Wiberny (saxophone), Raphael Klemm (trombone), and David Krakauer (clarinet). The arrangement is by Chris Byars. Produced at WDR Studio 4 / Cologne (September 2015).
New Yorker David Krakauer is a classical musician by training, - but he is at least as close to klezmer music and jazz. And Krakauer wouldn't be himself if he didn't also incorporate elements of avant-garde, hip hop and electronic music. He has become internationally known as a member of the band "Klezmatics", but he also maintains several (different) band projects of his own. For the first time he meets the WDR BIG BAND with his energetic music, with whom he will play the concert "Klezmer & Beyond" at the "International Jazz Festival Viersen" (2015) under the direction of Chris Byars.

No one compares to David’s incredible talent with the clarinet. He’s a very sweet person as well.

This is my introduction to Heyser Bulgar. Yes, I looked up a more traditional recording, and I think WDR does a terrific job. My opinion does not count, but it seems to me like they honored klezmer music with this performance.

I haven't seen this many TLM-170 & RE-20 mics in the same place I think ever. What studio is this?
Oh and Super 20 altos! Great playing all-around.
Anyone know why the sax section is reversed from normal? Left to right from the rhythm section, it's usually T1 - A2 - A1 - T2 - Bari. My only thought was to get the bari & bass bone near to each other.

I have seen them for many times and I was always wondering how good they are. So please think about your point and go to one of their concerts and you will be convinced:)
